  • Organisation GitHub account. Secure to use for personal projects?

    - by Mackey18
So a large client of mine gave me access to their Organisation GitHub account. With it came a login for myself (on github.companyname.com) and of course access to certain repos on their company account (by switching the user to the company via the button in the top left). Now I was wondering, since I can create private repos for myself, is it safe for me to use these for non-related projects or can the company administrators access my user's repos despite being private? My understanding of Github is limited as it is, so this extra layer of complexity from the organisation account isn't helping too much. Thanks,Mike

  • Making video from 3D gaphics in OpenGL

    - by MVTC
What are some of the preferred methods or libraries for creating video from an OpenGL graphics simulation? For example, I want to create a visualization(video) of an N-Body gravity simulation by rendering non-real-time OpenGL frames. The simulation is already coded, I just don't know how to convert it to video. EDIT: I am also interested in providing the described functionality: The user can adjust parameters including the time step between captured frames and then initiate the simulation. The user waits for the simulation to complete, and then can watch the results. The user is able to increase or decrease the playback speed of the simulation whereas in slow motion, more frames are used i.e., you see higher resolution time steps, and when the speed is increased, you see lower resolution time steps at a higher rate, but the frames per second flashing on the screen is constant.

  • Replace Android on HP Slate 21?

    - by user288626
I want to replace Android with Ubuntu for Androids on my new HP Slate 21. As far as I known none has ever tried it yet and I would appreciate if Ask Ubuntu would help out here. Would I need to unlock & root first my machine? (In which case I will need a second machine plugged to my Slate...) Or can I just insert the bootable usb with the distribution I need and go from there as in a normal non-optical drive situation? Also where can I find the downloadable file/image of Ubuntu for Android as describe here? I see no link with the name on it.. Should I just download the normal dis and choose from options when installing it?

  • How could your company's learning/development department best serve you?

    - by MTR
I'll preface my question with a disclaimer - I am not an engineer, I'm just someone who works with them full-time, in a learning and development capacity. Given that, one of the comments I get regularly from the engineers I'm tasked with developing is that they feel that they're having solutions (both technical and non-technical) for development "pushed" at them vs. anyone from my field consulting with them to determine what they really need. So my question is - if you could give your company a list of the top 3-5 things they could do - in a classroom, or elsewhere - to develop meaningful skills that would help you be a better engineer, a better employee, and one more likely to STAY with the company for the long haul, what would make the cut and why? Thanks in advance for your responses.

  • Is there a COMPLETE tutorial for upgrading for dummies?

    - by Windwood Trader
I have tried upgrading in the past with zero success doing a backup of stuff and futilely attempting to enter my stuff into the new version. My email accounts and folders, my bookmarks and web browser info and of course my photos. In the past I have received messages that the back up files were done using version XXX and cannot be read by the new system, as an example. I need a hand-holding tutorial to go from 11.04 to 12.10. What are the actual step by step mechanics? Frustrated Non-Geek

    - by user288987
I have a dual boot system with 12.04 and windows 7. Ubuntu worked fine yesterday but this morning upon boot I get subject. Searched the forums and unsuccessful with recovery. I tried sudo gedit /var/log/apt/history.log to see the log of removed packages, but get the following... ** (gedit:976): WARNING **: Command line 'dbus-launch --autolaunch=2d7d18532e9953bc8a2b852e00000007 --binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n Cannot open display: Run 'gedit --help' to see a full list of available command line options. Anyone have any suggestions for a fix? Please let me know if you require any additional information. Thanks! Mark

  • Free serif font with clearly distinguishable 0 (zero) character

    - by l0b0
I'm using gLabels to create some small pieces of paper to give away to people - Just two lines of about 15-20 characters each. One of the important parts of the design is that there are no "o" ("oh") characters, but there are "0" ("zero") characters in an all-lowercase URL. Therefore I need a non-monospaced (and very legible in print) font where "0" cannot be confused with "o" even without reference. The closest thing I've found so far is Andale Mono and Inconsolata , but they are both monospace, and as such not very easy to read in print. Alternatively, to find a font myself, is there some way to preview all fonts in the Ubuntu repositories without installing them?

  • Wifi worked after reinstalling the driver, but why did it stopped working in the first place?

    - by Ankit
I was having an issue with connecting to my wifi router since yesterday; could see the router in the wireless networks available but the router was not authenticating my password. I tried unblocking the hardware switches though non was blocked. Finally on discussing with the ISP i gave a re-installation of the wireless driver a try; and to my surprise that worked.(I was assuming faulty wifi router). So as per the subject of the question; I am very curious to know what actually happened that prevented me to connect to my wifi. Any logs that I could see to confirm the cause of this suspicious activity.

  • How to tackle archived who-is personal data with opt-out?

    - by defaye
As far as I understand it, it is possible to opt-out (in the UK at least) of having your address details displayed on who-is information of a domain for non-trading individuals. What I want to know is, after opt-out, how do individuals combat archived data? Is there any enforcement of this? How many who-is websites are there which archive data and what rights do we have to force them to remove that data without paying absurd fees? In the case of capitulating to these scoundrels, what point is it in paying for the removal of archived data if that data can presumably resurface on another who-is repository? In other words, what strategy is one supposed to take, besides being wiser after the fact?

  • ACL tool for audit of Ubuntu production servers

    - by migrator
In my production environment, I have close to 10 Ubuntu 12.04 Servers and I want to get the list of users from them. I am looking for some kind of script or tool (non-gui) to get the same. Yes, I can get the list from /etc/passwd and /etc/groups files but it would be good to have a tool or script to do this due to the following reasons. I have right now 10 systems in Ubuntu and 30 systems in Windows 2003. I am recommending my organization and IT to move all the systems to Ubuntu except the one running MS SQL server We do not have good Ubuntu admins with us and they should not mess up with the system if I give some manual commands I also need to find out date of creation of user, group, password standards like strength, expiry etc Please help me as I want to automate the process and get the list on weekly basis from IT team. Thanks in advance.

  • My laptop doesn't always boot to login

    - by GUI Junkie
I have an recurring problem. Every once in a while, no pattern, the laptop freezes during boot. Sometimes at a black screen, sometimes a black screen with a not blinking cursor... The solution is to power down the laptop, cross my fingers and boot again. Sometimes it takes four or five reboots, but in the end I always get the system up and running. What bugs me is the fact that the boot is not 'stable' in a sense that apparently it doesn't always do exactly the same thing. I'm still using 10.10. The question is whether there is anything that can be done to make the system stable. (Does 11.04 have the same issue?) Edit: Today the same thing happened. First a black screen with a non blinking cursor. Second a black screen. Third login screen.

  • How to hide process arguments from other users?

    - by poolie
A while ago, I used to use the grsecurity kernel patches, which had an option to hide process arguments from other non-root users. Basically this just made /proc/*/cmdline be mode 0600, and ps handles that properly by showing that the process exists but not its arguments. This is kind of nice if someone on a multiuser machine is running say vi christmas-presents.txt, to use the canonical example. Is there any supported way to do this in Ubuntu, other than by installing a new kernel? (I'm familiar with the technique that lets individual programs alter their argv, but most programs don't do that and anyhow it is racy. This stackoverflow user seems to be asking the same question, but actually just seems very confused.)

  • How can you remove Unity?

    - by Brad
In previous versions of Netbook Remix I was able to disable the netbook-launcher and just have a blank desktop. I liked the speed of the Netbook version but not the interface, this worked well for me. However, now with 10.10 and Unity I'm having trouble doing a similar thing. I tried removing netbook-launcher from the startup and tried uninstalling unity. The best result I got was a black desktop with a panel and a non configurable blank white background. Is Unity soo integrated into this version that I will have to just go with the default ubuntu installation?? In the past the default version has been slower then the Netbook version without the interface. Thanks.

  • Ubuntu 12.10 Network Connection menu GUI doesnt work properly

    - by wax
Many a times I have seen When I click on network connection(besides volume icon), I am unable to select any options. When I hover over VPN connections, the list shows nothing. I have added many VPNs. Network menu becomes non responsive to any clicks. This is annoying because I am not able to connect to any of the VPN connections. "Enable Wireless", "Edit Connections" or any other option doesnt work at all. Restarting ubuntu fixes this issue. But problem starts randomly again and restarting my laptop is the only way to fix it. Is this a known bug? Any ways to fix this prob?

  • How selective do we need to be for an index to be used?

    - by TiborKaraszi
You know the answer already: It depends. But I often see some percentage value quoted and the point of this post is to show that there is no such percentage value. To get the most out of this blog post, you should understand the basic structure for an index, i.e. how the b+ tree look like. You should also understand the difference between a clustered and a non-clustered index. In essence, you should be able to visualize these structures and searches through them as you read the text. If you find...(read more)

  • How to configure Google sitemap links in Wordpress? (without editing its HTML or PHP source code) [duplicate]

    - by Alexander Farber
This question already has an answer here: What are the most important things I need to do to encourage Google Sitelinks? 5 answers I run a Wordpress 3.7.1–de_DE site, but don't have much experience with it yet. When my site comes up in a Google search, there are 2 links displayed underneath: I believe these links are called "Google sitemap" and my question is how to configure them in Wordpress. Because while the right link is pointing to the /ueber-mich URL at the website, the left link was pointing to an non-existing /imprint and I had to add that webpage as a workaround for now. And I'd like to change the /imprint to German /impressum anyway (currently I use mod_rewrite to redirect). UPDATE: Dear downvoters and movers, would you mind to READ my question please? My question has been about how to configure Google sitemap links in Wordpress. So it is NOT A DUPLICATE (I do not want to edit the HTML code, I want to find the correct configuration in Wordexpress) and my question SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN MOVED AWAY from wordexpress.stackexchange.com.

  • Ubuntu 14.04 compiz thumbnails preview flicker

    - by HockeyBum
Ubuntu 14.04.1 x64 (upgraded from 12.04) with Unity desktop Dell Latitude with NVIDIA GF119M (NVS 4200M) - Optimus is DISABLED Using NVIDIA legacy binary driver 304.117 When I set the CCSM option to allow thumbnail previews, the thumbnail 'flickers' for about 1 second before the actual thumbnail image is displayed. I don't think I had this enabled under 12.04 so not sure if it's version-specific. Should I be using a different driver (there are newer ones - Ubu shows NVIDIA binary driver 331.38 and the non-proprietary nouveau, plus NVIDIA has newer ones at the site)? TIA!

  • Writing Resumes for Internships?

    - by ProdigySim
I'm an undergraduate student starting to look for internships. I understand a lot about how to embellish a real-world resume--emphasizing tasks done at previous jobs and whatnot--but I'm not sure if it will translate well to low-experience internship resumes. Internship Resumes are marked by: Few to no past Software-related full-time jobs or internships Few to no non-school-involved Software-related activities Obviously if you have no experience or activities to list, you're pretty well stuck. So let's assume we have one of each. I'm basically wondering: What is a company looking for most from Intern candidates? Past work, GPA/coursework, Outside projects (Open Source, etc), certain skill sets (languages) Should I be emphasizing tasks, or jobs/positions when listing my experiences? Are skills important to list? If so, which ones in particular?

  • Process of getting DEJUS rating (Brazil)?

    - by feklee
I would like to get DEJUS rating for my HTML5 game on the Firefox Marketplace, so that I can tell Mozilla to make the game available to users in Brazil. I want the game to be rated as: Livre (general) Can non-Brazilian citizens request ratings from DEJUS? If so, what documents need to be provided, and in which language? What I have found so far: Submission form in English (note that there is no country field in the address form, and it's necessary to specify CPF/CNPJ) Description of procedure in Portuguese. Process flow chart in Portuguese. Practical guide to rating system in English.

  • Why does apt-get keep waiting for headers on Oracle repository?

    - by hughdbrown
I have this at the end of my /etc/apt/sources.list to retrieve Oracle code: deb http://oss.oracle.com/debian unstable main non-free When I run sudo apt-get update, the app gets stuck displaying this message: 100% [Waiting for headers] If I remove this, apt-get update runs without error. Is there a new, recommended URL for Oracle products and, generally, how do you fix this problem? I am pretty sure this did not happen on 11.10 and has only started with the move to 12.04. I have seen these answers and they do not help: apt-get update stuck on "Waiting for Headers" http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1689579 http://muffinresearch.co.uk/archives/2010/03/30/linux-fix-for-apt-get-update-waiting-for-headers/ http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?57567-Ubuntu-problems-on-update

  • Vertex data split into separate buffers or one one structure?

    - by kiba2
Is it better to have all vertex data in one structure like this: class MyVertex { int x,y,z; int u,v; int normalx, normaly, normalz; } Or to have each component (location, normal, texture coordinates) in separate arrays/buffers? To me it always seemed logical to keep the data grouped together in one structure because they'd always be the same for each instance of a shared vertex and that seems to be true for things like character models (ex: the normal should be an average of adjacent normals for smooth lighting). One instance where this doesn't seem to work is other kinds of meshes like say a cube where the texture coordinates for each may be the same but that causes them to be different where the vertices are shared. Does everybody normally keep them separate? Won't this make them less space efficient if there needs to be an instance of texture coordinates and normals for each triangle vertex (They won't be indexed)? Can OpenGL even handle this mixing of indexed (for location) vs non-indexed buffers in the same VBO?
