• Ubuntu 12.04 upgrade (from 11.10) removed all packages installed

  I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04 using bootable USB. After upgrade, all non-default packages from 11.10 are gone. For ex, I did not have Chromium, Eclipse etc. Although, I could see these in the History in the "Ubuntu Software Center". Is there any way I can retrieve all these packages (even reverting back to 11.10 is also fine with me)? What could be a possible reason for this (We plan to upgrade a few more machines)? During the upgrade process, I had unchecked the box which asked permission to look online for upgrade/packages. Co

• Need to setup and access web disk for a hosting account

  I am on linux(ubuntu 12.04) and have purchased a hosting space. In the cpanel, I selected nautilus for accessing web-disk and I was given a note: Note: In order for the Web Disk to work, you will need to allow port 2078 (SSL) or 2077 (non-SSL) on your computer's firewall. As, I am unable to connect to this, i.e. on entering the given url in Nautilus address bar, it says 'Connection closed'. So, I believe the above this quoted is not correctly configured. Please let me know, how to configure this? How to allow the given port access?

• Can't access my partitions after installing Ubuntu

  I've been implementing Bukkit plugin for creating toggleable in-game warping areas that will teleport any catched entity to other similar area. I was going to implement concept of non-Euclidean maze using this plugin, but, unfortunately, I've discovered that doing Entity.teleport() causes client to interpolate movement while teleporting, so player slides towards target like Enderman and receives screen updates, so for a split second all underground stuff is visible. While for "just teleport me where I want" usage this is just fine, it ruins whole idea of seamless teleporting, as player can clearly see when transfer happened even without need to look at debug screen. Is there possibility to somehow disable interpolating while teleporting without modifying client, or maybe prevent client from updating screen while it's being teleported?

• Forked a project, where do my version numbers start?

  I have forked a project and have changed lots of it. This fork isn't just a small feature change here and a buried bug fix there, its a pretty substantial change. Only most of the core code is shared. I forked this project at v2.5.0. For a while I've started versioning my fork at v3.0 . However I'm not sure if this is the right way, mainly because when that project hits v3.0, things get confusing. But I don't want to start over at v1.0 or v0.1 because that implies infancy, instability, and non-refindness of a project. This isn't true, as most of the core code is very refined and stable. I'm really lost on what to do, so I ask here: Whats the standard way to deal with this kind of situation? Do most forks start over again, bump up version numbers, or do something else that I'm not aware of.

• How to change keyboard sleep button to hibernate?

  I have a keyboard with a "sleep" button that does indeed make my computer go to sleep. The problem is that Ubuntu can't really handle sleep on my computer, causing it go into a non-responsive mode, having the CPU fan spinning at full speed and it stops receiving any input. Hibernation instead works mainly as it should. I would like to set the sleep key to hibernate, but the keyboard settings' hotkeys tab doesn't have this "sleep" keybinding and though I could make new one with hibernate --force as the command, it would require root rights to run. How can I change the keyboard sleep button action to hibernate?

• Shifting from XNA/C# to C++?

  For a while now, I've been working with XNA for game design and development (although only for personal use ATM.) Overall, I'm a major fan of XNA itself, and it's overall "feel." However, due to the fact that: XNA seems to have a lack of support (no Metro support, no updates since 2010, etc.) I plan to try and get a job in the game development industry, and due to C++'s dominance, being more familiar with it would be very useful XNA only supports Windows (non-Metro) and Xbox 360, while I am interested in Mac and (to a lesser extent) Linux support. I've been trying to shift over to C++ as my main language. However, I do not want to focus on learning raw DirectX/C++ at this time, so I've been looking for a higher level C++ API (something about the same level as XNA, although something a bit more low-level would be fine) with a feel similar to XNA. So, for someone switching from C#/XNA to C++, what would my best choice(s) be for API's similar to XNA, although unmanaged and running on C++?

• reasonably priced registrar for obscure tlds like .tt

  I'm looking to buy a .tt domain name, however the only registrars I can find want from between $500 to $3000 for one domain. Considering I can buy a .com for around $10 a year, I consider that not very reasonable! It's going to be for a personal blog site (non monetised), hence why I'm not willing to spend over $500 a year on it. Does anyone know of any registrars that sell obscure tld's such as .tt for reasonable price? As for my definition of "reasonable", I understand it's not a .com and I'm going to have to pay more, but $3000 is just silly! In my opinion I'd say anything under $100 is reasonable.

• System checks for disk drive error every time it boots

  When my disk space for the ubuntu installation partition was getting low, from a live cd, I used gparted to increase its volume capacity, but deleting another partition and merging it to the ubuntu partition. Since then onwards, I am receiving disk checking for errors at boot screen for my partitions, always. What seem to be causing this and how to fix it? • Where can I find statistics / figures on how long testing should / could take?

  I'm trying to convince management that testing/QA takes considerably longer than non-developers think. Some smaller shops don't have budgets for testers and phbs automatically assume the developer will spend a few minutes after every build "testing" and deliver a perfectly functional system. Can someone point me to some numbers? e.g. Testing should be XX% of your total man hour count , etc etc? Or perhaps some real world experience? My goal is to have some numbers that are grounded in real life so I can make time/effort allocation justifications for "proper" testing when preparing estimates and timelines for applications. Maybe not full blown 100% TDD, but pragmatically close to it. I apologize if I seem vague.

  I am hosting collection of videos, for which I retain the copyright, on a file server that I'd like to share with family and friends. When a user visits the my fileserver via a web browser they are asked to authenticate using HTTP auth and then they are presented with a basic list of the files. I'd like to build web application that provides a clean interface with simply library functionality. However, this app will be hosted on a different server. I'm trying to figure out a security model for my file server that doesn't require the user to login to both the file-server and the hosting-server. I want to make this as easy as possible for my non-tech savy family while still maintaining security for my files.

  If you were looking into a job applicant's background and discovered that he or she has 1200 followers on Twitter and averages 50 tweets per day (more than half of which are during business hours), would it affect your hiring decision? How and why? Personally, I'd be a little worried about the candidate's ability to focus on the job at hand if they're constantly checking in with their 'tweeps' thoughout the day. In non-tech jobs, a lot of companies simply block Twitter as an irrelevant distraction. But it can be a useful resource---to programmers in particular. I just wonder how much is too much. At what point does it become a red flag?

• Could not write bytes: broken pipe - looking for log of removed packages

  I have a dual boot system with 12.04 and windows 7. Ubuntu worked fine yesterday but this morning upon boot I get subject. Searched the forums and unsuccessful with recovery. I tried sudo gedit /var/log/apt/history.log to see the log of removed packages, but get the following... ** (gedit:976): WARNING **: Command line 'dbus-launch --autolaunch=2d7d18532e9953bc8a2b852e00000007 --binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n Cannot open display: Run 'gedit --help' to see a full list of available command line options. • Where does ntpdate get its settings from and what is the "no servers can be used" error about?

  When I run ntpdate on its own, I get the following output: 8 Jun 15:47:46 ntpdate[31251]: no servers can be used, exiting If I run it with the -q ntp.ubuntu.com switch, it seems to query just fine. I have been hunting through many files and the most relevant one I have found is /etc/default/ntpdate, however, even with NTPDATE_USE_CONF set to no, I just can't understand/see how this error is occurring Any ideas? Update-- been looking non stop... It appears that ntupdate-debianworks fine and is the actual command that makes use of /etc/default/ntupdate, but, this doesn't answer the main question and I still can't find it...

In order to keep this question non-subjective, again, I'm talking about the top repeated offender(s) of Unity are. This is something that, as a Unity user, you really wish someone had told you about before you started using it. I have heard from someone that Unity does not deal well with version control, since it generates a lot of binary files (which are un-diffable). This, to me, is not really crippling as I work alone.   I find ubuntu extremely unstable with mouse freezes (that can be corrected with control key), constant Compiz crashes ( with ATI non proprietary drivers also), problems installing drivers ( why would I want a video driver that fails to play most games, with loss of function of so many games (BZ flag?? has been around for years with no problems). I get the feeling that there is so one in your dept who is intentionally making poor and unstable choices for less than altruistic reasons. Whatever happened has been worsening ever since Unity became a choice. I have tried Kubuntu, Mint, Lubuntu and several other variants with similar poor results. Be aware I have used Ubuntu for many years.
