• How to protect an OS X Server from an anautorized physical connection?

  Hi I have an OS X 10.6 server, which I administer via SSH and VNC (via SSH tunnel). I can't leave it at the login window since then VNC connections are refused. Therefore I currently leave it logged with my user account. Since it doesn't have a monitor attached, it doesn't go into screen saver mode, which means it doesn't require a password to retake control. This means it is very easy for anyone connecting a keyboard/mouse and monitor to take control of the system. The screen saver password protection, which I can't get to activate, unlike the system's login window, is perfectly compatible with VNC connections. How could I prevent such direct access to the server without connecting a monitor and without blocking my ability to connect with VNC? Thanks!

• ATI Radeon 5850 I cant seem to get 3 monitors up at the same time. 2 Monitors and a HDTV but still.

  Ive just bought the top end ATI Radeon card with 2 normal monitor ports and a HDMI. The idea was to continue using my dual screen setup as always and to use the last plug, the HDMI on my TV. I got a new 52 inch HD TV with all the necessary bits. This should work fine. But.. in Display Properties I still get only my 2 monitors up as options. Not the Digital TV. When I unplug 1 monitor and restart the computer, I get the TV and the other monitor. But never all 3 at the same time. Why is this ? Where can I go to tell it that I need all 3 screens at the same time. Also I get a message saying my gfx card also gives sound through the HDMI cable.. But the TV tells me its recieving a sound format that it does not understand. Any ideas on that too while were at it ?

• Only One GPU Detected in the Nvidia Quadra NVS 450

  I just built myself an new workstation and now only 2 of 3 monitors are working. I built the nvidia driver by downloading it and installing with ./Nvidia... Before when I ran nvidia-settings I saw two GPUs listed but now I only see one. • How can I take browser screenshots at a higher resolution than my browser supports?

  I need to take a screenshot of a website as it would appear on a very high resolution monitor... say 4000x3000 pixels. My laptop's screen has a native resolution of 1400x768. Basically, I need to simulate having a monitor resolution much higher than my monitor and video card actually supports. I want the screenshot of the site to look pretty much how it does when you hit CTRL MINUS (zoom out) in Firefox repeatedly, but without any loss of pixels due to scaling. How can I do this? Is there some way to use virtual machine software to simulate a super-high-res display? If not, is there some way to open a browser window bigger than the screen, and then capture its contents as a PNG somehow? Anything else that might work?

• IE won't start session from an iframe?..

  The task was to bypass login form on remote server with a session_id acquired through a call to server's web API. So that user wouldn't have to login twice. Since there's no way to set cookies for different domain. What we came up to was - put a little file on remote server, to which we pass encrypted session_id from hidden iframe and which is supposed to start a proper session for a remote app, which is then loaded in another iframe. This approach works fine in FF/Chrome, but not IE... However if I copy url to self-made remote authorization script from iframe's src attribute to to IE's address bar and load it from there, session get's created as expected. But for some reason it just doesn't want to do the same from an iframe. Does anyone have any clue, why this is happening?

• Radeon 4670 Card Has 2 DVI Outs But Only Works When One is used in Win7 x64

  I have an ATI XFX Radeon 4670 1GB video card in a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 setup. If I only use one monitor, all is well. If I plug in a second DVI cable to the card, both monitors go dark. I can get one or the other to display, but only when it is the only one plugged into the card. I'm really hoping for a dual-monitor setup here as that was the point of the card. I'm using ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series video drivers dated 11/24/09 (8.681.0.0) which are the latest from their site and are supposed to work with Vista or Win7 x64. When the computer boots with both displays connected, both monitors display the inital bios and boot screens. The Win7 splash screen also displays, but by the time it goes to the login screen, one monitor is offline.

• Firefox tabs in titlebar - can't drag maximised windows across monitors

  In Windows 7, you can drag a maximised window from one monitor to the next by dragging the titlebar. However, Firefox 4 now places tabs in the title bar when it's maximised. This means that when I try and drag my Firefox window to the other monitor I end up dragging a tab instead of the whole Firefox window. It's quite annoying, as I'm used to "flicking" Windows from one monitor to the next. Does anyone know a way to stop Firefox from using the title bar for tabs?

• jQuery bind efficiency

  I'm having issue with load speed using multiple jQuery binds on a couple thousands elements and inputs, is there a more efficient way of doing this? The site has the ability to switch between product lists via ajax calls, the page cannot refresh. Some lists have 10 items, some 100, some over 2000. The issue of speed arises when I start flipping between the lists; each time the 2000+ item list is loaded the system drags for about 10 seconds. Before I rebuild the list I am setting the target element's html to '', and unbinding the two bindings below. I'm sure it has something to do with all the parent, next, and child calls I am doing in the callbacks. • Git repository gets corrupted when I do a large commit: "Possible repository corruption on the remot

  Hi All, A friend of mine and I have been trying to use git for a project. It is hosted on his server, and I git clone it as: git clone [email protected]:/path/to/git/repos.git Pretty standard stuff, and it works great for a while. But every time one of us has added a large commit (which git supposedly handles very well), of the order of 100MB or so, the git repository gets kind of broken. Basically, at this point I will be able to push new changes and pull other changes (I think), but when I try to clone the repository in a fresh location using that command above, I get an error message that says: $git clone [email protected]:/path/to/git/repos.git Initialized empty Git repository in /local/path/to/repos/.git/ remote: Counting objects: 1455, done. remote: Compressing objects: 100% (1235/1235), done. error: git upload-pack: git-pack-objects died with error.s fatal: git upload-pack: aborting due to possible repository corruption on the remote side. remote: aborting due to possible repository corruption on the remote side. fatal: early EOF fatal: index-pack failed This has happened 3 or 4 times now, and it's always when I add a large commit. • VGA cable casuing resolution issue

  Hello, I recently bought a new VGA cable . When connected Windows 7 detects my monitor as a generic plug and play monitor. The resolution goes bad with the screen blurred. This problem disappears when i connect my original VGA cable. Also Windows 7 detects my LG monitor correctly in this case. I am pretty sure it is something to do with the VGA cable but have no idea what could be the possible issue. Any pointers would be very much appreciated.

• Moving LiveMeeting admin functions to a different window

  I run a user group, and often host LiveMeeting sessions. I use a projector, with a crowd watching. How do I do the admin stuff (respond to Q&A, etc) on one window, and just have the video on the 'extended monitor'? I dont' want the people in the audience to see anything except the video feed, but I want to be able to watch questions come in, etc... Note: I don't have a problem extending the screen across the two monitors - I already have different stuff showing on my screen compared to the projector. I just want a way to put the LM video on Monitor 2 (projector), and the LM controls on Monitor 1.

• How do I set up different configurations on an Ubuntu laptop based on different physical locations?

  I'm looking for a way to have a couple (or three) multiple configurations set up on my laptop, and easily switch between them. To be more specific, when my laptop is at work, it's plugged into a second monitor, and has a specific set of networks configurations. At home, the second monitor is gone, the network configurations are different. At a public wireless point there are other configurations to set, etc. I know I can go into my preferences and turn on/turn off the monitor, and mess with the networking preferences, and so on, but I'm looking for a way to change a bunch of preferences all at once, and if it's possible to do that automatically, maybe based on the wireless APs in the vicinity, that would be even better.

  hello! i have to create a videowall, from 3 to 9 monitor. every monitor as a pc. actually, i stream from a server 9 movies with different istances of VLC, but i could also play on every machine the relative video with a single player. there's no problem. the real problem is that i really dont know how to sync the videos on a LAN...unfortunately there is a NETSYNC module inside VLC wich is NOT working. here are some info about my setup: videowall from 3 to 9 monitor || from 3 to 9 pc, all with the same configuration || a gigabit router+switch for the "dedicated" LAN im really stuck in this situation, if anyone has an idea or just a completely different solution, please, share it with me! thanks a lot in advance! :)

While I was talking to dell tech., he told me that Dell would charge me for the replacement monitor if I fail to return my defective monitor within 15 days. I don't know why he told me that when I didn't ask it. so here is my question. How are they going to charge me?? Dell does not have my credit card or bank account info. • Using video ports 'backwards'

  If I want to connect my laptop, which has a VGA output, to a monitor, I plug a VGA cable into both ends. The output being my laptop, and the input the monitor VGA output sockets are the same as VGA input sockets however, so what if I want to use my laptop as the monitor, with the video being outputted from somewhere else? As I said, VGA's output is the same as input, so in theory, I have the hardware in my laptop to do this. But presumably I need some software. So can I use the VGA port on a laptop as a video input? (And also, can this be done with HDMI?)

• Windows 8 Metro UI with Multiple Monitors -- Keep in always maximized?

  Before installing Win 8 today, my plan was to keep the Metro UI up on my smaller, laptop monitor and have the classic UI running on my two larger monitors. However, in reality, as soon as I click on something in one of the classic UI monitors, the Metro UI minimizes (thus exposing the classic UI in its place). Is there any way to keep the Metro UI from minimizing when I do something in another monitor? Oddly enough, if there is an app running/suspended in the Metro Window, then the Metro UI is not minimized. If the Start screen is currently viewed, clicking in a classic window/monitor switches the Metro UI from the start screen to the last run app. Very peculiar .. Thanks

  Hi, I have a stateless session bean and a standalone-java-program acting as a client. The bean method executes just fine when the interface is marked @Remote. However,when I mark that interface with @Local instead of @Remote, I get the following Exception. [java] javax.naming.NamingException: Could not dereference object [Root exception is java.lang.RuntimeException: Could not find InvokerLocator URL at JNDIaddress "chapter1/HelloUserBean/local"; looking up local Proxy from Remote JVM?] But I expected even the latter to work, since it is the same computer that the code executes in. Seeing this behavior, I am assuming that, the Application-Server and the Standalone-Java-Program use different JVM instances and not a single JVM instance and so this client can access only through a remote interface. • Session variables not getting set but only in Internet Explorer and not on all machines

  Logging into a site I'm working on functions as expected on my local machine but fails on the remote server but ONLY in Internet Explorer. The kicker is that it works in IE locally, just not on the remote machine. What in the world could cause this? I have stepped through the code on the remote machine and can see the entered login values being checked in the database, they are found and then a login function is called. This sets two $_SESSION variables and redirects to the main admin page. However, in IE only (and not when run on local machine... this is key) the $_SESSION variables are not present by the time you get to the main admin page. var_dump($_SESSION) gives me what I expect on every browser when I am running this in my local environment and in every browser except IE 6, 7 and 8 when run on the remote server (where I get a null value as if nothing has been set for $_SESSION). This really has me stumped so any advice is appreciated. For an example... in IE, run locally, var_dump gives me: array 'Username' => string 'theusername' length=11 'UserID' => string 'somevalue' length=9 Run on the remote server (IE only... works fine in other browsers) var_dump gives me: array(0){} Code: $User = GetUser($Username, $Password); if ($User->UserID <> "") { // this works so we call Login()... • Colors less saturated in Snow Leopard Finder, Preview & Safari than in Chrome -- why?

  If I look at the picture here in Safari, Preview or the finder, the shades of blue are significantly different than if I look at the picture in Google Chrome (they are less saturated than in Chrome). Since I am a photographer and need to prepare pictures for publication online, I need to know what a jpeg should really look like, in order to color-correct it. I have an excellent Eizo monitor that is correctly calibrated. If I open the same image in Photoshop CS3, I get the Chrome colors if I use Monitor RGB under view proof setup, and I get the Safari colors if I use Macintosh RGB. Can anyone explain the difference between these two settings, and the difference between Safari and Chrome? Which colors are correct? Photos that I prepared under Windows (during the past five years) now seem washed out in the Apple Finder and Preview, even though I had correctly prepared them. Is there a setting on the Macintosh for color calibration, besides the monitor calibration control panel?
