  • UTF-8 character encoding in Java

    Hello, I am having some problems getting some French text to convert to UTF8 so that it can be displayed properly, either in a console, text file or in a GUI element. The original string is HANDICAP+ES which is supposed to be HANDICAPÉES No matter how I tried converting it, it appears the same way. Any ideas on how I can do this conversion? Thanks, Cam

  • Using boost::iterator

    I wrote a sparse vector class (see #1, #2.) I would like to provide two kinds of iterators: The first set, the regular iterators, can point any element, whether set or unset. If they are read from, they return either the set value or value_type(), if they are written to, they create the element and return the lvalue reference. Thus, they are: Random Access Traversal Iterator and Readable and Writable Iterator The second set, the sparse iterators, iterate over only the set elements. Since they don't need to lazily create elements that are written to, they are: Random Access Traversal Iterator and Readable and Writable and Lvalue Iterator I also need const versions of both, which are not writable. I can fill in the blanks, but not sure how to use boost::iterator_adaptor to start out.   • jquery ui autocomplete does't close options menu if there is no focus when ajax returns

    I'm using jquery ui autocomplete widget with ajax, and on noticed the following problem. Background: In order for the user to be able to focus on the autocomplete and get the options without typing anything, I use the focus event: autoComp.focus(function() { $(this).autocomplete("search", "");} However this produces the following effect: when the user clicks, an ajax request is being sent. While waiting for the response, the user then clicks elsewhere and the autocomplete is blurred. But as soon as the response returns, the options menu pops out, even though the autocomplete has no focus. In order to make it go away the user has to click once inside, and again outside the autocomplete, which is a bit annoying. any ideas how I prevent this? EDIT: I solved this in a very ugly way by building another mediator function that knows the element's ID, and this function calls the ajax function with the ID, which on success check the focus of the element, and returns null if it's not focused. It's pretty ugly and I'm still looking for alternatives. EDIT#2: Tried to do as Wlliam suggested, still doesn't work.. the xhr is undefined when blurring.   • Understanding Haskell's filter

    I understand that Haskell's filter is a high order function (meaning a function that takes another function as a parameter) that goes through a list checking which element fulfills certain boolean condition. I don't quite understand its definition: filter:: (a->Bool)->[a]->[a] filter p [] = [] filter p (x:y) | p x = x:filter p y | otherwise = filter p y I understand that if I pass an empty list to the function, it would just return an empty list, but how do I read the last two lines?

    Hi I have this code that fetches some text from a page using BeautifulSoup soup= BeautifulSoup(html) body = soup.find('div' , {'id':'body'}) print body I would like to make this as a reusable function that takes in some htmltext and the tags to match it like the following def parse(html, atrs): soup= BeautifulSoup(html) body = soup.find(atrs) return body But if i make a call like this parse(htmlpage, ('div' , {'id':'body'}")) or like parse(htmlpage, ['div' , {'id':'body'}"]) I get only the div element, the body attribute seems to get ignored. Is there a way to fix this?

  • Web pages show empty band across the top

    In Chrome, site http://www.helpinghandspeople.com has a 16px empty band (background colour shows) across the top of the page. It's not supposed to be there, but I can't figure out how to make it go away. In Firefox, the home page shows fine, but login and a few other pages show a 24px band. Viewing source and running inspect element are not helpful. Does anyone have a suggestion where to look? Thanks Gerry

  • iPhone RSS thumbnail

    I have a simple RSS reader. Stories are downloaded, put into a UITableView, and when you click it, each story loads in a UIWebView. It works great. Now though, I'd like to incorporate an image on the left side (like you'd see in the YouTube app). However, since my app pulls from an RSS feed, I can't simply specify image X to appear in row X because row X will be row Y tomorrow, and things will get out of order, you know? I am currently pulling from a YouTube RSS feed, and can get the video title, description, publication date, but I'm stuck as to how to pull the little thumbnail besides each entry in the feed. As you can probably tell, I'm a coding newbie (this being my first application other than a Hello World app) and I'm getting so frustrated by my own lack of knowledge. Thanks!
