• Using Visual Studio 2010 Express to create a surface I can draw to

- by Joel
I'm coming from a Java background and trying to port a simple version of Conway's Game of Life that I wrote to C# in order to learn the language. In Java, I drew my output by inheriting from JComponent and overriding paint(). My new canvas class then had an instance of the simulation's backend which it could read/manipulate. I was then able to get the WYSIWYG GUI editor (Matisse, from NetBeans) to allow me to visually place the canvas. In C#, I've gathered that I need to override OnPaint() to draw things, which (as far as I know) requires me to inherit from something (I chose Panel). I can't figure out how to get the Windows forms editor to let me place my custom class. I'm also uncertain about where in the generated code I need to place my class. How can I do this, and is putting all my drawing code into a subclass really how I should be going about this? The lack of easy answers on Google suggests I'm missing something important here. If anyone wants to suggest a method for doing this in WPF as well, I'm curious to hear it. Thanks

• Running Services.msc as a different User C#

- by Simon Mark Smith
Hi, I have a requirement to create a simple windows forms application that allows an admin user to manage the Services on remote servers. We don't want to give the admins the usernames and passwords to the servers so these will be encrypted and stored in a database. My question is whether or not it is possible to spawn a Services.msc window when impersonating one of the users stored within the database? I have looked at the ProcessStartInfo class but because Services.msc is not an executable it does not seem to like executing this. Any ideas on a simple way of doing the actual impersonation and loading of Services.msc - say off a button click? Thanks

• Why is only the first shown window focusable

- by Miha Markic
Imagine the code below. Only the first window appears on the top, all of subsequent windows won't nor can they be programatically focused for some reason (they appear in the background). Any idea how to workaround this? BTW, static methods/properties are not allowed nor is any global property. [STAThread] static void Main() { Application.EnableVisualStyles(); Application.SetCompatibleTextRenderingDefault(false); Thread t1 = new Thread(CreateForm); t1.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA); t1.Start(); t1.Join(); t1 = new Thread(CreateForm); t1.SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA); t1.Start(); t1.Join(); } private static void CreateForm() { using (Form f = new Form()) { System.Windows.Forms.Timer t = new System.Windows.Forms.Timer { Enabled = true, Interval = 2000 }; t.Tick += (s, e) => { f.Close(); t.Enabled = false; }; f.TopMost = true; Application.Run(f); } }

• LINQ EF not saving to database...

- by Keith Barrows
I guess this is a continuation of the last question I asked: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2587542/bulk-insert-and-update-with-ado-net-entity-framework. I am not getting any errors while doing inserts yet no data is actually going into my DB. My DB is a SDF file (SQL CE). Any ideas what to check? My app.config looks like: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <configuration> <configSections> </configSections> <connectionStrings> <add name="Lab_Use_Billing.Properties.Settings.LabUseConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=|DataDirectory|\Models\LabUse.sdf" providerName="Microsoft.SqlServerCe.Client.3.5" /> <add name="LabUseEntities" connectionString="metadata=res://*/Models.LabUseEntities.csdl|res://*/Models.LabUseEntities.ssdl|res://*/Models.LabUseEntities.msl; provider=System.Data.SqlServerCe.3.5; provider connection string="Data Source=|DataDirectory|\Models\LabUse.sdf"" providerName="System.Data.EntityClient" /> </connectionStrings> </configuration> TIA

• Insert a default row into a combobox that is bound to a datatable?

- by John M
On a winform there is a combobox that derives its information from a datatable. The datatable draws from a database list. this.cboList.DataSource = pullData(); this.cboList.DisplayMember = "fieldA"; Once the DataSource is set I am not able to insert a default row (ie *) as the first item in the combobox. I tried this: this.cboList.Items.Insert(0,"*"); Is there a way to insert in the combobox after the datasource is set or should this be done in the datatable?

• Validating event usurps button click on Windows Form

- by triskelion
I have a ComboBox and a Save button on my Windows Form. When I change the selected value in the ComboBox then click the Save button, the ComboBox validating event fires but the button click is lost. When the selected value is valid this results in the user thinking they have saved the change when in fact they have not. Why is the button click lost if the ComboBox is valid? Is there a work around?

• How to make c# don't call destructor of a instance

- by Bình Nguyên

• Smooth Text On Glass

- by j-t-s
Hi All I have seen many other samples out there that draw smooth text on glass. But I can't use them. I need every single label that gets added at runtime to be smooth. I can't just "draw" text onto the screen. Is this at all possible, and are there and sources around? Thank you

• What pattern to use in this scenario?

- by jess
Hi, We have got many forms(windows app C#) in our application.We have similar steps in most of them - user adds a new object(in a grid),fills values and save.On,save,we validate,and save if everything ok,else show message.Now,adding of object usually means we add a new row with some default values.

• Printing Images C# Overlapping Wrong

- by Alen
I have created a program much like Photoshop in the sense that you can place images (picture box) on a control, move them around, delete them, and so on... I have also managed to put together a method to print all the images on the control with no problems. But here is the weird part: When I click print, the program prints the image which was placed first, on top of the image which came second. On the screen the user can see the image which was placed second, on top of the first placed image (the way it should be) but when I print its opposite? I have no idea why it does this... I hope I've made my self as clear as possible, any help is appreciated! public void printToGraphics(Graphics graphics, Rectangle bounds) { graphics.TextRenderingHint = System.Drawing.Text.TextRenderingHint.ClearTypeGridFit; graphics.CompositingQuality = System.Drawing.Drawing2D.CompositingQuality.HighQuality; graphics.SmoothingMode = System.Drawing.Drawing2D.SmoothingMode.HighQuality; Bitmap bitmap = new Bitmap(newLabel.Width, newLabel.Height); newLabel.DrawToBitmap(bitmap, newLabel.DisplayRectangle); Rectangle target = new Rectangle(0, 0, bounds.Width, bounds.Height); target.Height = bitmap.Height; target.Width = bitmap.Width; graphics.PageUnit = GraphicsUnit.Display; graphics.DrawImage(bitmap,target); } void printDoc_PrintPage(object sender, PrintPageEventArgs e) { printToGraphics(e.Graphics, e.MarginBounds); }

• C# Closing a form during a constructor

- by pm_2
Is it possible to close a form while the constructor is executing (or simply to stop it showing at this stage)? I have the following code: public partial class MyForm : Form { public MyForm() { if (MyFunc()) { this.Close(); } } } Which errors in Main(), here: static void Main() { ... // Following line errors Application.Run(new MyForm()); } I’ve tried checking the result of MyForm like this: static void Main() { ... MyForm frm = new MyForm(); if (frm != null) { // Following line errors Application.Run(frm); } } But that doesn’t seem to help. Can anyone tell me a way around this, please? Maybe a way to check the form to see if it still exists?

• passing something from child form to parent

- by Alan Bennett
so i have this form and on it is a combo box populated from a database via a SQL method. and i have another form which allows us to maintain the database table etc. so i make a new instance of the second form doing: Form1 frm = new Form2; frm.show(); once i have done what ever i wanted to do on the second form and i close it, i need to somehow trigger an event or something which will refresh the combo box and the code behind it. i was thinking of some onchange or focus event for the whole form, the problem is i have 5 of these combo boxes and running all the SQL again. i also thought of passing somesort of variable thro but then i would still need an event for that. any ideals would be awesome

• How to load mht from stream/string into a WebBrowser control?

- by Sameh Serag
The WebBrowser control loads properly any mht file if I use the Navigate method, but when I use the DocumentText or DocumentStream properties, the source of the mht file is displayed as if I opened the file in notepad. If I write the stream to a temp file then Navigate to it, it works properly, but I don't want to do it this way. This issue seems common, but I didn't find a working solution for it. Some people suggest I should fool IE by implementing IPersistMoniker com interface, ...etc. I have tried with this a little bit, but unfortunately I got the same result. May be I have done something wrong. I still feel their should be a more straightforward solution (other than saving in a temp file first), any idea?

• open a text file only if not opened alread (open in NotePad)

- by Mr_Green
In my project, I am trying to open a text file. Well the below code works but when the user click the button again and again, many files are being opened. (which I dont want) System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(filePath); I also tried Link , File.Open and File.OpenText which are not opening the text file and also not showing any error (tried with try catch block) File.Open(filePath); (or) File.OpenText(filePath); (or) FileStream fileStream = new FileStream(filePath, FileMode.Open); I also tried this: (ERROR : Cannot be accessed with instance reference qualify with a type name instead) System.Diagnostics.Process proc = new System.Diagnostics.Process(); proc.Start(filePath); /*red scribbles here*/ proc.WaitForExit(); How to show only one instance of the Text file(.txt). am I doing something wrong in my attempts? please suggest. EDIT: I want to open other text files afterwards but not the same and also the application should be accessible after opening a text file(or many). I have only one form.

• How would I initialize these two lists so that modifying one doesn't modify the other?

- by Brandon
I'm aware of why this is happening, but is there any way to do this without having to implement ICloneable or a Copy() method? Preferably .net 2.0, but 3.5 is fine if it is necessary. Essentially I'm trying to implement an undo method. In most cases I can just perform the reverse action in the Undo(), but for others that is not possible. So I want to keep two lists. One for the list of items that I will be modifying, and one for the original, unmodified list of items. This way if I need to do an undo, I just delete the modified items and replace them with the originals. Most of the ways I've tried to assign the _originalItems variable doesn't work, so what would I need to do? public MyClass(List<SelectedItems> selectedItems) { _selectedItems = new List<SelectedItems>(selectedItems); _originalItems = ?? }

• Wrap a list to add an empty row for UI binding.

- by TheSean
I am binding a List to a UI Control. My list does not contain a blank row, but I need to add one to allow the user to select blank. However, I'm using the same list in other parts of the application (users can edit/add/delete items) where it doesn't make sense to show a blank row. My idea is to create a wrapper around the list which adds a blank row just for the UI. The wrapper would hold a reference so that updates to the list (from other parts of the app) would be reflected in UI without any extra work. I have tried a few different ways, but nothing has worked out for me yet. Can anyone solve this problem?

• IIS Web Farm Framework servers are automatically set to "unavailable" even when they are healthy... And they never return to the available state!

- by JohannesH
I have 2 web farm configurations, one with 2 member servers and one with 3 member servers. I have health monitoring set up on both farms and the monitoring tool reports all servers as being healthy. However after a while all the servers are marked as being "Unavailable" and "Healthy" in the "Monitoring and Management" screen (in the "Servers" screen they are all listed with "Yes" in the "Ready for Load Balancing" column). Viewing the event log on both the web farm controller or any of farm servers doesn't reveal anything interesting. there are no warnings or errors in the period where the servers became unavailable. There are a couple of informational events about the worker process getting shut down due to inactivity but I don't hope this is the cause since that would mean that the farms will die during the night when the load is low. Am I missing something? EDIT: Btw, I think its very odd that the application pool shuts down on the servers since the health monitoring system is polling an aspx page on each server. Shouldn't that keep them going? EDIT2: Now I've also experienced this problem with the RTW version of Web Farm Framework 2.
