  I realize my question is generic, but hopefully someone may have some guidance for me. My network consists of Cisco switches. I am seeing a significant amount (upwards of millions of packets per day) transmit drops between two switches. One being a 3750 and the other a 3560. The peak throughput of this link is only upper 400Mbps, so it shouldn't be a bandwidth issue. At this point, I am sort of clueless where to look or what tools I can use to determine what packets are dropping and why. I can setup a SPAN port on that link and wireshark it, but I don't know if that could tell me anything. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  Given a plain old directory of files in Windows Vista, say "C:\OldFolder\", is it possible to move the contents of that directory to a new location, perhaps "F:\NewFolder\" and keep a shortcut-like 'virtual' folder at C:\OldFolder that will always redirect access to the updated location. Shortcuts work for users accessing through the GUI to some extent, but all application links to the old location won't work anymore even with a shortcut. For example, If MS Word tried to access C:\OldFolder\document.doc I would want Windows to simply rewrite it's request to F:\NewFolder\document.doc... I guess I'm basically looking for Apache's Mod_Rewrite for Windows Vista... any suggestions?

• Slow LAN transfer from 3rd party computer

  Hi Everyone, I've got an odd problem that I'm not really sure where to start the troubleshooting process. I have a 'server' with Windows Server 2008R2 (64-bit) installed and it has a couple of hard drives. If I Remote Desktop into the server and transfer files from one HD to the other, all it fine. If however, I use my workstation (Windows 7 64bit) and open up a shared resource on the server and transfer a file from one hard drive on the server to another HD on the server (not using Remote Desktop, just Windows explorer/Network places), the transfer crawls... It takes about 5mins to discover files/calculate the transfer and then starts transferring at speeds like 56KB/s - 200KB/s. Both machines have Marvel GigE network ports with a TrendNet 8-port green GigE switch. I've set Jumbo packets to 9K on both machines...

  I just bought a Belkin F5U701-BLK 7-port USB Hub and when I plug it into my iMac it does not seem to recognize it. Do I need to reboot my machine or install a driver? If I have to install a driver where do I get it from? I tried going to Belkin's website to search for drivers and and support info for the hub but I could not find anything. Edit: The USB hub is powering the other devices but my iMac does not recognize both hard drives.

  Hi Guys, I have installed the above update through Windows Update. The update went through, reported a successful installation, and then straight after that it came back as an available update. I have done it a few times and my update log now contains multiple successful installations of KB995706. I have tried to uncheck it in the list of updates but it keeps coming back as well. The machine is a Server 2008 RC2 Standard. It's got SQL Server 2005 Express as well as SQL Server 2008 Standard. In the Event Log: Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Service Pack 3 (KB955706) followed by Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation.   We have problems with Win 7 PC's when the user only log on locally on (a domain joined) PC, but still use the Windows printserver. Installed printers suddently stop working and seem to appear offline. In Windows XP the (logged on locally) user would be prompted to autheticate to the domain when printing, but in Windows 7 this feature seem to be faulty or not implemented. I assume the problem is a timeout on the Kerberos ticket. Of course the user has to authenticate to install the printer from the printserver, and that works fine, but in time the authenticaton stops, and no prompt appear. Any suggestions how we can "force" a prompt to authenticate like it happened in XP?

• Why am I seeing excessive disk activity when installing applications?

  I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit on a Dell Vostro 1720 with 8GB of RAM, 7200RPM Disk, 2.53 GHz Core2Duo (Windows 7 64 bit is a supported option and the laptop came with the OS pre-installed). I'm noticing some fairly excessive disk activity when running installers. For example the Visual Studio 2010 RC installer constantly accessed the disk for ~10 minutes. It was so excessive that I was unable to use the machine until this ceased. Today I installed Trillian Astra 4.1 for Windows (latest build from the website). Again when I ran the installer I was pretty much locked out of the machine until the disk activity calmed down. In both cases when I eventually managed to launch task manager I could see that the CPU was sitting at around 5% to 7% utilisation whilst this was going on. All other disk related activity is fine, the machine is snappy and applications launch without delay. It's just when I run an installer I see this odd behaviour. Why would this be?

• Can't boot into XP after setting up dual boot with Win 7 vhd.

  I set up a dual boot for win 7 from vhd on 2 xp machines. One of them everything went fine, and I get the option to choose the os when I turn the machine on. The other was slightly different in that rather than seeing the current OS disk (the one with XP on) as the c:\ when I was setting up windows 7 vhd during install it saw the disk as d:. I didn't think anything of it and went ahead and created a vhd on the d: drive. Now when I turn this machine on, it boots straight to win7 and I never get the option to choose xp. When I look at the boot option in msconfig, I only see Windows 7. How can I go about adding the old XP drive as a boot option at startup again? Edit: Strangely when I rebooted this time (perhaps the first time since I removed the install DVD) it boots to XP. I suppose I'll just have to reinstall windows 7 again in a new vhd...

  I have a bluetooth USB, every time I enter the bluetooth, bluetooth is active only a few seconds, after which it can not be used again In 'devices and printer' there is still a bluetooth but if you want to save the settings it can not, there are error message or bluetooth is revoked. I am using windows 7, whereas if use Windows XP smoothly no problems. This not only happens on my computer alone, my friend who has a build-in bluetooth also experienced the same thing with the same OS. Is there a patch / fix / update for its Windows?   Background: I'm trying to stop and start IIS on a windows 7 build box, in order to run acceptance tests. But from what I have read, most of the remote web management features have been disabled by Microsoft in a retarted attempt to sell more Windows Server 2008 licenses. Still for some reason they didn't disable the least user-friendly ways of controlling IIS remotely, but they are all a total pain. What I can do easily is remotely stop and start the WWW service from a msbuild task. But I want to be sure that this also restarts the app pool, so that when I copy in new web files the web server there will be serving the most recent version of the website. Question: If I restart the W3SVC windows service, will that also restart the app pool?

• My ubuntu server is losing connectivity, require assistance troubleshooting

  I have two server monitoring tools that check the uptime of my Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS server. Over the last month both of these tools have reported the following outages: Jan - 15mins: self recovery Jan - 5 mins: self recovery Feb - 15mins: I managed to be online when this happened and logged into my control panel to find that my server was shutdown. I manually restarted it only because I was online. I wonder if it would have restarted? I have contacted my VPS provider (webbynode) who could not see any any problems with their VPS infrastructure for the February outage. I have also checked the following log files to see if there are any anomalies that could be the cause of the outages; I am unable to see anything related to the server shutdown (Feb) in these logs: /var/log/auth.log /var/log/apache2/error.log /var/log/syslog /var/log/kern.log /var/log/boot /var/log/messages Could anyone suggest any other things I should look out for, such as additional system logs? I just added bootlogging through /etc/default/bootlogd

• Troubleshooting "connection reset" error on my linux server

  I fervently hope someone here can help me with the problem I am experiencing. I am a programmer, and I have very little understanding of linux sysadmin terminology/concepts. I am attempting to troubleshoot a problem with my website. It is a Facebook app, and whenever I try to connect using Chrome, I get an error stating that the "connection was reset". I have been Googling for four days straight trying to find a solution to this problem, but no joy. A big part of the problem is that I do not understand the terminology being employed, and the output from many of the tools referenced is likewise indecipherable to me. I am running a VPS with CentOS 5, apache, PHP, and MySQL. I could spam this post with a ton of information from my iptables, apache, etc but if anyone needs information from my server, please let me know how to get it, and I will post it here. • Troubleshooting a slow database server with no load

  I'm getting ready to soft launch my website and I've run into some problems with what I think is being caused by my MySQL database running on Fedora. All websites run fine, just as I'd expect, but any pages that establish a database connection hang until the connection is established, and then bang, the site loads as it should. Ex. My landing page (http://www.thrusong.com) doesn't make a database connection and loads quickly. User profile pages (http://www.thrusong.com/john) make a database connection and load slowly, even though most of the data comes from memcached and the database currently has no load on it. This problem just came up yesterday when my router died and I began using my Pace 2Wire modem with built-in router. Before, my old router was set to handle everything. My ISP says the settings in the modem are correct. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  I often have both a VNC client window and several X windows open (via Xming) at the same time on my Windows XP desktop. When this happens, the X windows, especially emacs and firefox, often lock up or behave erratically. I am pretty sure I have narrowed this down to contention over the clipboard. I wasn't really able to find any options controlling this behavior in either Xming or VNC. Is there a solution to this problem? Right now, I have to close VNC when I am actively using emacs...

  Internet Explorer 9 in Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit has the items Send Page by email and Send link by email grayed out. The default email client is Windows Live Mail 2011. I have used the "Set Default" dialogs to do that. Everything else recognizes Windows Live Mail 2011 as the default, including Firefox 4. I have duplicated this problem on two computers here. I have changed the default email program to Mozilla Thunderbird on one of the computers, and IE9 won't let me Send Page by email or Send link by email there, either. Has anyone gotten this to work? Firefox is my default browser, but sometimes I have to use IE9.

• Why does my CPU Usage reach 100% too often?

  I'm using a dual-core processor and often see my CPU usage reaches 100%. I realize this may happen if I'm running too much applications, so when I know the computer starts to run slowly, I start to close my applications. I usually run 4-5 applications simultaneously. Usually those are: web browser (Google Chrome), Adobe Photoshop, Notepad++, XAMPP, and Windows Task Manager. Usually I close tabs in my Chrome first, because I often browse the net with about 20 tabs/4 windows open, so I presume that would take much memory (bad habit, I know). But even after closing Chrome's tabs or closing other applications, my CPU Usage often stays at high percentage - 72% at best, 100% at worst. I check the Processes tab on Windows Task Manager and usually found the System, System Idle Process, or services.exe taking the highest CPU process (could reach 60). Why is this happening? And is there any solution? EDIT I have T2250 @ 1,73 Ghz and 2.5 GB RAM

• Troubleshooting my internet connection

  While I was out of the house, my father rearranged the network cables a bit. I don't know what he has done exactly - He says nothing more then pulling and untangling. When I came back home, my internet connection changed its IP from 192.168.0.205 to 169.254.197.233. The speed changed from 1Gbps to 10Mbps. It has also been at 100Mbps for a while. My subnetmask changed from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.0.0. The standard gateway changed from 192.168.0.1 to no standard gateway. My DNS servers remain the same. I have checked the lights of the UTP ports, and it looks like it's only sending a heartbeat every few seconds. A sketch of the (relevant part of) the network: My PC ----- extender ----- modem ^ ^ ^ Wired | Wired | This thing connects two cables to each other All the cabling is gigabit, my network card is a Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20). THe modem is a CBN SVG6540E I have no idea what is going on here and I don't know how to find out either. Any help is welcome! If you need any more info, please ask.
