• Converting to a mac-book pro for multi disciplined development.

  Hi all, I am in a bit of a bind. I have been contracted to create a small suite of applications for Android, iOS and WP7. Currently I am also on the market for a new notebook for development. Now the issue I have is I can either buy a consumer grade macbook and a laptop or I could just buy an 8gb Ram, SSD, i7 mackbook and virtualise windows 7. I have never used a mac or macbook before so before I go purchase anything I would like to know what your thoughts are on this. Has anyone any experience with this?

• Use System Restore to rescue lost user profile in Win XP?

  Hi! My win XP account profile has recently been "reset". Many app settings are lost. For example, the "recent project" list in VS 2005 is empty. There should be lots of other stuffs that are painfully lost without me knowing! What can I do? Can I retrieve the app settings from System Restore? I don't have much confidence on this util, even tho I think restoring to a point when the profile still works, and back up away the C:\Documents and Settings (is it where all the app setting files are located?), that should work... Is it reliable to restore to a previous restore pt and then goes back to the latest RP? I've googled on System Restore, looks like what the util does is just back up some physical files, and restore them when doing System Restore. That sounds quite safe, but I am still uncomfortable to this. Thx for u guys' help in advance!

• How to keep TightVNC client on Windows XP alive when connected to OS X?

  I'm using TightVNC on my Windows XP workstations to connect to a remote OS X box (10.5.x) using OS X's VNC support. I've noticed that the TightVNC will become unresponsive after a period of inactivity. Is this a common issue? Restarting TightVNC solves the problem, but can be a bit annoying. Is there a solution to this? I don't suppose copy & paste between the two systems can be made to work?

  Ok, I burnt a cd and a jump drive and I want to install Ububtu on a windows xp computer. But the computer keeps showing the blue screen.... "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" Is there any way I can install Ubuntu still? Do I have to fix windows to be able to install it? And if so, does anyone know how to fix it? I don't have the windows installation pack.

• When XP is asleep for a long time LAN reports code 43, gives up the ghost.

  This one's got me stumped. Whenever the system is asleep for a long time, e.g overnight, the LAN driver reports error code 43 ("a problem") and turns itself off. This has being going on for months, but I never caught the problem until now. The owner merely shuttles back to a restore point I set her when the machine worked. Previously (without knowing exactly what was happening) I have tried everything to resolve this. Manually resetting the TCP/IP, fiddling with the driver Wake From LAN settings, DIFFERENT drivers, etc. etc. The solution is easy, uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Understandably, though, the user is uncomfortable with this operation and the problem persists. What's causing it and how to stop it recurring? Any ideas? Thanks in advance to this great community. • Replace gvimext.dll in Windows 8

  How can I get the "Edit with ... using tabs" functionality in gVim on Windows 8 (64-bit)? I'd like to swap out gVim's stock gvimext.dll for one that adds an "Edit with ... using tabs" option to Explorer's right-click context menu. On Windows 7 (64-bit) I used to be able to download the DLL and swap it in by following these instructions. However, I can't get it to work in Windows 8. The stock installation's context menu (sans "... using tabs") works fine (without a restart) ...but after replacing the DLL the gVim context menu options disappear and the gvimext.dll no longer seems to even load. (Windows 8 was restarted) if I again replace gvimext.dll with a backup of the stock DLL, the context menu options remain missing and the DLL still seems to fail to load (Windows 8 was restarted, again) If I re-install gVim, the context menu items return (even without a restart) What is the difference here between Windows 7 (where swapping DLL's works) and Windows 8 (where swapping DLL's fails)?

  I have a large set of unattended Windows XP machines who are not connected to a domain or even to each other. I am struggling to find any tools out there that I can use to deal with them in one application. I am hoping to find software that I can perhaps install a client on each machine, then have it essentially proxy out configuration information and possibly commands (install, uninstall, stop service, etc) across the whole network. The closest I've come is Nagios and its client, but it cannot be used to push files through and run commands remotely. Any suggestions?

• Get the Windows 7 Start Menu Back in Windows 8 with Classic Shell

  I just thought I’d give readers a heads up that you can use Classic Shell to get the old Windows 7 style of start menu back instead of using the new crappy Windows 8 metro start screen; plus it’s free and open source .  You can still access the metro start screen with Shift+WindowsKey or Shift clicking the start menu button.  This program also defaults to showing the desktop on startup instead of the metro start screen (but that can be disabled), and is super configurable and has tons of options to tweak it just the way you want if you are picky like me   The only thing I would say is when installing the app, only install the Classic Start Menu; you don’t need the other ones.   I am writing a program that will eventually be used on a computer with a physical parallel port and will need to set certain pins high or low in order to signal to an external device. However, the development laptop I am using does not have any physical parallel ports and is too low powered to run a virtual machine. • How to set a low process priority for everything spawned from a command prompt in XP?

  As a developer, once or twice a week I run a full build on my XP dev machine. This will run at 100% cpu for 30 or 40 minutes, making my machine usless for anything other than basic browsing & email. Is there anyway I can specify that for a given process (i.e. a command prompt) it and any process spawned by it will hae a lower priority, say taking up no more than 60 - 70% of CPU, leaving my machine more usable. I don't mind the build talking 30 or 40% longer, if I still have use of my machine while it's running. Thanks BW P.S. I'd love to be able to throw more hardware at the problem, but that isn't under my control.

• Logitech USB keyboard driver not found on Windows 7 x64

  I have a Logitech Internet 350 Keyboard which has been working fine on my Lenovo T400 laptop for well over three years. Just within the past week or so, Windows 7 can no longer find the driver for it. There is no custom driver from Logitech for this device -- it uses the generic Windows USB HID driver. The keyboard works just fine from the BIOS (and Linux which I dual boot this machine), but Windows 7 cannot find or load the driver for it. Any ideas? I smell a Windows update problem, but have no idea how to fix it, and I really am not interested in rolling back updates. New Info: I just tested a generic Dell USB keyboard and it worked just find, with Windows immediately recognizing the device and installing the HID keyboard class driver. So, it seems that Windows has decided not to recognize my specific Logitech keyboard device. I still suspect a Windows update issue, but I would love to hear other suggestions.

I dont have a external CD drive and REALLY dont want to pay HP 200bux for one. so, I've been TRYING to reinstall WinXP from a flashdrive and I have it to the point where the XP installation gets past the Agreement, but then the netbooks hard drive is not showing up, it's jus giving me the option to install WInXP onto the flash drive, registering as C:. I've tried using nLite to add extra drivers to the WinXP "cd" but I dont think I have the correct HD drivers and I am stuck. ANY help at all be great

The reason for trying to separate the connection is I can't have torrent downloads using all my bandwidth as my web pages cant be access as it times out or too slow. I have two broadband connections, is this even possible or would i need a different OS or program that I can download? please

• Is Clonezilla a good option for a daily batch-file-based backup of a Windows XP PC?

  Having just been through the process of rebuilding a Windows XP desktop machine when the disk died, I'm anxious to make it a lot less painful. I didn't lose any data, but reinstalling everything took ages. Clonezilla seems to be a highly mentioned free backup tool. How easy would it be to implement the following: a nightly unattended backup of the desktop's disk image to another network machine (or a second drive in the machine), hopefully with compression. restore from that image using USB boot media. so that if I come in to work and find the hard drive has tanked, it is just a matter of replacing the dead drive with a new one, booting from the USB stick, choosing the image to restore, and then finding something else to do for an hour or two. When it is finished I would hopefully be back to where I was.

  One of the more annoying bugs in Windows XP is the tendency for the Task Manager icon to not show up in the tray (aka the notification area). Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, and it's not consistent enough to have an obvious cause. Looking on Google turns up a bunch of forums that have the same problem but no working solution. • Windows 7 boot error

  I am running windows 7 professional, everything was working fine until I installed a software driver clearner suggested by nvidia customer service and I cleaned only nvidia graphic driver installation since then my windows does not work at all. I can access everything from startup repair, did lots of time repair but nothing happened. System restore does not work it says c: drive is not available, its 100% there and I can access every file from command prompt. Almost two days passed and I applied every solution discussed on several forums, now only thing left is either install fresh windows (Which i really don't want to do) or update windows (which windows does not let me to do, it says I have to update it from windows) My question is there any way to update (not fresh/custom installation) windows from command prompt? P.s: Safe mode, safe mode command nothing works except startup repair option. I ran sfc /scannow no problem found. I also removed all attached hardwares. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The broadband states connected but does not go out to the interenet. When I click Internet Explorer it says unable to find webpage. I have tried several major sites so I know its not the site but some configuration or something I need to do on my end. When I go to the cmd prompt and renew the ip it refers to my wireless nothing about this broadband connection. What do I type/select to get this to go out to the Internet. The broadband is working for my other laptop so I know the connection is not the issue. Any help would be much appreciated thank you.

• XP Filesharing works with IP's but not computer names.

  I recently ran into a problem where I was setting up a 5 person LAN. I enabled filesharing on the main computer and wanted to allow the other 4 computers to have access. 2 computers were able to access \expample without any issues. 1 computer would only connect if I uses the ip address \x.x.x.x\data. The third computer was able to access \example but required the user to login every time they tried to access the share. Why is there such inconsistency in these connections? All 5 computers are Windows XP Professional.

• Build git on embedded system

  I want to build git on our embedded system and I got git's source code from here. I run ./configure tool with following arguments: ./configure --build=arm-eabi --host=`uname -p`-`uname -s`-`uname -o` Configure tool runs, and returns an error says: checking whether system succeeds to read fopen'ed directory...configure: error: in`/home/git-1.8.0.2`. I set necessary environment variables like CC and CXX to our tool chain already, so ./configure complains nothing about compilers. But I have no idea about that error message. It looks like some permission problem, but I have full permission of /home/git-1.8.0.2 for sure. Any idea ?
