• set proxy for vpn server on ubuntu server 12.4

  I have a vpn server with HTTPS, L2TP , OPENVPN , PPTP. i want to set proxy in the server so all connection that comes from vpn clients use the proxy that i set in my server.   I have installed MySql 5.5 server under windows 2008r2 x64 Apparently I can see that MySql service stops even if is configured to start automatically What can I do to find out why this is happening? MySql database is used as backend of ASP.Net web site Is it possible that web site was not active for a while and system stop mysql service? Update: It was mysql-5.5.7-rc-winx64. I could be an issue with this version (release candidate). Now I am trying to install mysql-5.5.8-winx64 And I have an issue with configuring MySql to work using name pipes I did uncheck use of TCP/IP protocol and configuration wizard just hangs Update: I have found workaround. • Word 2007, Adding Page Numbers to Landscape, 5.5 by 8.5 Booklet Style Document

  I am publishing a 5.5 by 8.5 booklet. I created this document in Word 2007 and will be converting it to PDF. It looks good as is, but I can't seem to figure out how to add page numbers automatically to this document. In general, I know how to add page numbers using footers, etc, but this application is a bit different: I have two pages (5.5 by 8.5) on one landscape 8.5 by 11 page. See picture below: I guess I could manually add page numbers, but then getting the formatting perfect will be tough. Any ideas?

• Network printer - Print direct or via shared printer on Server?

  It has occurred to me that a workstation can connect to a printer in two ways: 1). Printing directly to the IP of the printer with the print driver installed locally. 2). Printing to a \Server\Printer1 share with the print queue residing on the server. Question is which way is preferred? I would assume that printing directly to a network printer rather than going through the server would be the most efficient from the point of view of network traffic. On the other hand I guess a server printer share would be easier to manage with the correct driver automatically being downloaded to the workstations. Also what about using GPP (Server2012) to install this printer on the workstations, does that require any specific way?

• Run Python Server at Startup

  Hello, I've got a few Python based servers that I need to run, and would like them to start automatically when I start my Ubuntu Server box. What is the best way to execute them like this? I was hoping I could write a Bash script and use Screen to get them running in the background, where I can check on them every now and then, but where as echo screen -d -m python works just fine, echo screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py` doesn't, with no error messages. Is that something to do with the spaces? Even though I did surround it with backquotes? I also tried: WEB="screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py`" echo $WEB As a way of escaping the spaces, but no luck. What's Bash scripting way to do this? And, once the Bash script works, where can I put it to make it execute on startup?

  I have to make sure that one process in server never goes down. So I'm think of cron vs daemon. Please provide me a good example of unix shell scripts that will run as daemon process. I'm trying to avoid the non sense of permission issue for crontab. Also there is not much good resource on the web for this. Will this daemon process automatically start during a server/system restart. If not how can I achieve this?

  My website has an SSL cert (example url: https://subdomain.example.com). Under Apache it's set up for both port 80 and port 443. So under the following configuration, anyone who goes to http://subdomain.example.com is sent to https://subdomain.example.com . But for visits from Internet Explorer, the redirect doesn't happen. Instead, http visits get a "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page." with a list of client-side solutions to try. Any ideas on how to fix the config so IE visits have the same behavior as the other browsers (that is, send http to https automatically)? • Encrypting a thumb drive

  What I would like to do is create a hidden, TrueCrypt partition on my thumb drive (along with the "fake" partition that it creates) but I also don't want to have the TrueCrypt software installed onto my machine. Is there a way to do this but add TrueCrypt as an auto-start item so I plug in my thumb drive, mount the hidden partition, and go? Beyond that, is there a way to make it work in ANY operating system (i.e. automatically start TrueCrypt on OS X, Linux or Windows on plug-in)? I'm more concerned with my first question but this would be icing on the cake.

• Can I rebuild degraded RAID1 on a SAS 5 i controller with a larger mirror drive size?

  Hi, A drive failed on a Dell SAS 5i controller - see controller bios screengrab: http://imagebin.ca/view/SkZbszA.html The primary is a 160GB 10k sata drive. I added a 250GB 7k rpm drive in the hope that the array would rebuild onto this drive. This did not happen. (assuming that the controller would just operate at the speed of the slowest drive) The controller could see the new drive, but it didn't automatically rebuild the raid1 onto this drive. (my assumption is that it did not do this rebuild as the drive sizes are different). There was an option to add the new drive to the existing raid1 array - but when I tried this a message appeared stating that all data on the array would be lost. (I didn't get a screenshot of this message, I will later) Should the SAS 5i allow me to rebuild the array onto a larger drive? Is the option to add the drive to the array the right way to go? • Customize autoindent settings in VIMRC file

  I have autoindent enabled in my .vimrc file but have run into an annoying bug/feature. For example, when I'm tabbed in 3 times, and I hit return, the new line is also tabbed in 3 times. Then when I hit enter again, that new line is also indented 3 times, as it should. The problem occurs when I go back up to the previous line (the first of the 2 new lines). VIM automatically removes the whitespace because it saw it as an empty line. Is there a way to disable this from happening? I'd like to be able to back to coding like this: function test(){ <return> <return> } <up> <right> Thanks!

• Edit files from Cyberduck in an existing Vim window

  I use Cyberduck as my go to FTP client on Windows. I have but one complaint, and that is whenever I click the edit button to edit the remote file with a local version of gVim, it opens in a new window/instance of Vim. This leads to a cluttered desktop as well as not allowing the AutoComplPop to work at it's full potential. What I would like to be able to do is automatically open every file in a new buffer inside of an existing gVim buffer instead of a new window, kind of like the Windows version of gVim and how it has the option to edit a file in a new buffer. Is there anyway to do this in Cyberduck/gVim setting?

• Sudden restart when Ubuntu almost loaded from disc.

  Hi all, Here are the specs beforehand: ECS K7SEM motherboard AMD Duron 900MHz 2x 256MB PC133 SDRAM The Best Power MT-500P 500W PSU Integrated graphics No hard drive DVD-ROM - will update with brand & model Now, I was starting up this machine after it was left outside for 3 months in winter weather. (I got this from a friend.) I was able to get it started and tried to load Ubuntu from the DVD-ROM. It was fairly successful and got up to the point when the Ubuntu logo is glowing. However, when Ubuntu was about to go to the main screen, the computer crashed and automatically rebooted. Is there any reason why this is happening? Also, I should mention that when I try to hit Delete on the BIOS screen to go to Setup, it only shows a screen with four lines saying something Novell something... I will edit with exact lines. Should I be resetting the BIOS or something? Thanks in advance.

• Tomcat memory usage grows until crash with no GC run

  I'm administrating a server running Tomcat that is getting a lot of traffic lately. If I monitor memory usage in Task Manager I can see the memory usage growing and eventually tomcat crashes around the 1GB mark. Here's the memory relevent bits I've set in Tomcat Properties (this is a Windows Server): Intial memory pool: 1024 MB Maximum memory pool: 1024 MB -XX:MaxPermSize=256M The weird thing is since these problems arose I've deployed Lambda Probe to the Tomcat instance and the memory usage values I see there are much lower, for example Task Manager might show 467MB used while the "Total" used in Probe is 212 MB. Also, the Maximum Total listed in Probe is 1.29GB, when I would have expected 1GB, the maximum memory set above. If I force the garbage collector to run using Probe, I can keep Tomcat from crashing for a while (indefinitely, AFAIK). So why doesn't the GC run automatically and stop Tomcat from crashing? Thanks.

  I am using Windows 7 and I am looking for a list of the different parameters to use in the Target line of a shortcut in Windows Explorer. For example: /n forces it to open a new window, even if it duplicates a window that is already open. /e uses Windows Explorer view (multi-paned) /root,X restricts Explorer to showing only the contents of file folder X (and its sub-folders) /select,Y automatically selects Y (either a file or folder). What other parameters exist? I have been searching online and cannot find anything.

• Tie stock quote value to cell in Excel 2011 Mac

  I've been working on a mock stock portfolio in Excel, and I've been looking for ways to automatically update the data, eg. stock price and P/E ratio. I have tried using a web query to MSN Money, but that just brings up the whole stock quote across multiple cells, I want data to be updated in individual cells only. The only web query solution I can think of is if someone hosted a website where each value in the stock quote was saved on a different HTML file. I could then WebQuery to that file for each cell requiring that value. However, no website offers this. So in essence, is there any tool on Excel 2011 Mac that will let me pull individual values from a stock quote and assign them to a single cell?

  Whenever I reboot a CentOS Hyper-V VM, eth0 does not start automatically. All I need to do is perform ifup eth0 and all is fixed, but that isn't feasible from ssh! I am starting in runlevel 3.   I'm setting up a new Ubuntu 14.04 server and followed these instructions to install kippo (the SSH Honeypot). To run kippo, I do: su kippo ~/kippo/start.sh The contents of start.sh is simply: #!/bin/sh echo -n "Starting kippo in background..." authbind --deep twistd -y kippo.tac -l log/kippo.log --pidfile kippo.pid Which starts up a background process for kippo. What can I do to make this automatically run on startup? Do I need to add a script that calls this in /etc/init.d?

• can I get ConEmu to "mark to copy"?

  I installed ConEmu last week, thought I'd give it a try vs. Console2. After staring at various config options for 10 minutes I didn't see any way to get ConEmu to automatically copy text that I've selected to the clipboard. Console2 will do it.   If I use runas /user:DOMAIN\user cmd.exe (using XP), previously mapped persistent network drives are considered unavailable. net use shows: Status Local Remote Network ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unavailable H: \\SERVER\SHARE Microsoft Windows Network dir H: fails with "The system cannot find the path specified.". The connection is easily revived with `NET USE H: \SERVER\SHARE': not asked for a password when I do this. What is going on? Can I make Windows safely revive this drive automatically when it is first accessed.

• Two Routers, Two Internet (1 Open, 1 PPTP) - Routing?

  Hi there, I'm trying to setup two routers - one to route specific sites to a always-on PPTP VPN connection, the other for open internet access w/ firewall. First router is connected to Internet w/ built-in firewall. Second router is connected to a PPTP VPN connection. I was going to connect a wire between the routers and would like some insight on how to get both groups of systems (connected to each router) to talk between automatically. Even better would be to setup one gateway for certain sites and another for general Internet. The other option is to default all sites to the net and shoot others to the gateway or vice versa... Any insight so I can get a better grasp of this? Thanks!

  /media/MYDISK is where my hard drive is mounted automatically. I created a symlink using: ln -s /media/MYDISK /home/camilo/MYDISK chmod 777 /home/camilo/MYDISK I'm setting up smb.conf like this: [myshare1] comment = external disk browsable = yes path = /home/camilo/MYDISK guest ok = yes read only = no create mask = 0775 Also, in the [global] section I tried adding the following lines: follow symlinks = yes wide links = yes unix extensions = no The problem is that when browsing the shared folder in Windows 7, I get a "\\etc\myshare1 is not accessible" error. When pointing the path to a regular folder it works fine. Also, when I point it directly to /media/MYDISK, it shows the same error. EDIT: to make it more interesting, I have no graphical interface, so I need to touch the config files directly..

• Starting Redmine at boot using upstart on Ubuntu

  So after installing redmine from the repositories on Ubuntu 12.04, i've tried to create an upstart script (see below) so it would start up at boot time. While service redmine start does start redmine, it does not start automatically when booting. Also when i run service redmine stop it does stop redmine but simply hangs until i press ctrl+c Also, after stopping starting it again does not work (Also just hangs). From all the upstart examples and tutorials i have seen this should work, so i guess i'm overlooking something. • Mount drive when symbolic link is accessed

  I have a MacBook Pro with two internal drives: an SSD and a slow rotational drive. On the rotational drive I keep heavy, rarely accessed files like movies, photos, etc. These are symlinked from the SSD, so applications like iPhoto and iTunes will still find everything where they expect. I don't usually have the rotational drive mounted because it's loud and mostly unused. Is there a way to mount it when the system tries to access data behind a symlink, then unmount it automatically later? (Intermediate *nix user, here, feel free to tell me I am asking for magic.)
