• Can't install Windows 7 on Acer Aspire M1100

  When I install Windows 7, everything goes smooth but as soon as it's done and Windows needs to reboot for the last time before getting the desktop, the computer stucks to Verify DMI Pool Data............. and then, nothing. I change the CMOS battery, I tried so many setup in BIOS, even load default settings... Nothing worked. The HDD light is not flickering anymore, no HDD activity. CTRL-ALT-DEL doesn't work. It's just impossible to load Windows 7. I tried Windows XP and this works fine. I also tried the Acer (Futureshop) recovery CD and I get an Hexademical error message stating the install cannot continue. Is there a BIOS flash apps somewhere or a fix I can apply to have Windows 7 Ultimate installed on my computer. Any takers?

• DFS-R (2008 and R2) 2 node server cluster, all file writes end in conflictAndDeleted

  Both servers in a 2 server cluster are reporting event 4412 20,000 times per day. If I sit in the conflictAndDetected folder I can observe files appearing and disappearing. Users report that their files saved by peers at the same location are overriding each other. The configuration began with a single server, then DFS-R was set up using the 2008 R2 wizard that set up the share on the second server. DFSN was set up independently. Windows users have drives mapped using domain based namespace (\domain.com\share). Mac users are pointed directly to the new server share created by DFS-R. It is PC users indicating most of the lost files, but there has been 2 reports by Mac users about files reverting.

  If I use runas /user:DOMAIN\user cmd.exe (using XP), previously mapped persistent network drives are considered unavailable. net use shows: Status Local Remote Network ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unavailable H: \\SERVER\SHARE Microsoft Windows Network dir H: fails with "The system cannot find the path specified.". The connection is easily revived with `NET USE H: \SERVER\SHARE': not asked for a password when I do this. What is going on? Can I make Windows safely revive this drive automatically when it is first accessed.

• Watch videos from a remote computer on the LAN on ubuntu

  I want to watch the videos on a friends computer on the LAN without having to download it. Both of us are running ubuntu. Now one way is to ssh to his computer, cd to the directory where the video is and run the falling command: cat video.avi | ssh me@mycomputer mplayer - This works. However the problem is that I cannot seek inside the video as in can't go forward or backward in it. Is there a method by which I can watch the videos and also seek in them ? I can install any software on his comp and my comp to aid this process. I have root level access on both computers. Any suggestions ?

  Hi I have a working courier-imap server on my Debian Etch private server ; users are virtual, authentificatin goes through mysql. It's been working good for years. I would like to share an imap folder between 2 users. I thought I would just have to do something like this : cd path/to/mailusers/dir ln -s path/to/user1/maildir/.folder_to_be_synched path/to/user2/maildir/ After I entered the command, I found that user2 saw a new folder in its imap client, but the folder appeared empty. It is not a permission problem because all the virtual users have the same permissions on the file system. Any idea what I could do ? thanks

• Mount drive when symbolic link is accessed

  I have a MacBook Pro with two internal drives: an SSD and a slow rotational drive. On the rotational drive I keep heavy, rarely accessed files like movies, photos, etc. These are symlinked from the SSD, so applications like iPhoto and iTunes will still find everything where they expect. I don't usually have the rotational drive mounted because it's loud and mostly unused. Is there a way to mount it when the system tries to access data behind a symlink, then unmount it automatically later? (Intermediate *nix user, here, feel free to tell me I am asking for magic.)   We are thinking about purchasing 4 x EqualLogic PS6510X SANs (the Sumo boxes). Each has 48 x 600GB 10k SAS drives. They will be stacked to form a logical pool of storage (all in the same location). I understand that when you create a RAID group its done on a "per box" basis. So one box could be Raid 50, another Raid 10 etc. My question is, should I make one box a "performance" box ie Raid 10, and the other boxes "standard" ie Raid50? How do people configure their EQL arrays in the real world?

When i tried again, after booting from CD a black screen with a mouse pointer appears. No further progress. The mouse pointer can be moved. I tried with some other disks also. • How do you add more space to a Fedora (LVM) partition?

  In a nutshell, i have a VM that ran out of space. I increased the size of the VM's harddrive to be 4 times bigger but the OS partition is still only using 1x the space. I need to change the LVM partition to take up the extra 4x space but I don't know how to extend the LVM partition. (NOTE: To make the screenshots given below I had to boot from a live-cd for gnome-partition-manager (aka gparted). Very unfortunately gparted is only able to "detect LVM" and can't do any LVM operations.) Here is what "gparted" shows. Please notice that the "resize" option is not available: The Problem: I can't find good directions<1 on how to grow the LVM partition via GUI or command-line! How do you grow a LVM partition that was created by the default Fedora install? If you are giving command line directions. Please explain what each line of commands does.

• Installing Plone on Centos fails: Unable to find libssl or openssl/ssl.h.

  My dedicated Server has CentOS 5.5. I tried to install Plone, so I basically did: wget launchpad.net/plone/4.0/4.0.2/+download/Plone-4.0.2-UnifiedInstaller.tgz tar xzf Plone-4.0.2-UnifiedInstaller.tgz cd Plone-4.0.2-UnifiedInstaller ./install.sh zeo I ran into the following error: Unable to find libssl or openssl/ssl.h. If you wish to build without SSL support, run install.sh again with --without-ssl flag. Otherwise, install your platform's openssl-dev libraries and headers and try again. After this error I successfully installed openssl: yum install openssl And i tried to install Plone again. But I keep getting the error: "Unable to find libssl or openssl/ssl.h". Anybody an idea what I'missing?

• How can I be sure that the motherboard is dead and it's not another issue?

  So I have and old computer with and Intel D101GGC motherboard and a pentium 4 cpu and award bios, with a long repeating beep and not passing POST. I tried: RAM checking, they are good and working on other computers Replacing the PSU with a tested one, and still having the same issue I assumed that the CPU is dead and tested 2 others they are both Celeron D processors I also tested the CPU of this computer on another one and it's working fine I also tried it without RAM and still have the same long beep I did all this after disconnecting all the other hardware like HDD and DVD drives. The only time I didn't get any beeps is after removing the CPU I don't know if the processor is needed for the beeps to work. So My questions are: is it normal to not get any beeps if we don't have a CPU installed ? am I missing something or is the motherboard dead ? and thanks in advance.

  Hi, I need to create a disk image from a Windows 2000, NTFS formatted, hard drive. This image has to be used to create backup hard drives to replace the original disk in case an emergency situation arises. This is a medical equipment, so I cannot physically disconnect the disk because I would violate the warranty of the equipment. This machine has a DVD R/W, ethernet and USB 2.0 access, and we have the rights to install any application I want in the Windows 2000 system. 1) Is there any way to do this without installing any new software in the Windows 2000 system, so it is the least invasive as possible? 2) If we have to install a software to do the backup, which software do you recommend? • Prevent Windows 7 prompt format USB HDD

  I am running Windows 7. I have a USB HDD 100% formatted with a Trucypt partition. When I insert the drive into my system, Windows asks if I would like to format the drive, each time I insert the drive. So how do I turn this prompt off? If so, I would prefer it be applied globally (e.g. no more prompts for any other drives). Since its an invisible partition unless mounted with Trucypt, Windows is always going to think nothing is there and continue to prompt me. I don't want to hit enter on the keyboard a few times by mistake doing something else and have it to go through the process. I'll lose everything. It is all backed up BTW. Will just be inconvienient.

• PC doesn't boot PC-BSD from USB

  I've got a problem with a friend's PC: I'm installing a FreeBSD server and to make easier the installation for my friend I'm using the PC-BSD DVD. Surprise! The CD reader doesn't read DVDs, so I'm using a USB stick to perform the install. The PC seems supporting USB boot because I can choose it in the boot sequence, but the PC-BSD installation doesn't start, booting the OS installed in the primary HD.   I am currently configuring RAID 10 (first time doing RAID ever) for a server at work. In the Configuration Utility. I am given the option of either span 2 or span 4. Having never done this before, I was curious if someone could tell me the pros and cons of for each span? • Windows scheduled task not running

  I have several SQL server backups on a server. I have created a batch file which then copies these to network drives. These are mapped to the server, and it works properly. Now, I've created a scheduled task to do this. If I select "run the task when logged in", I can test the task. It works fine. However I cannot test it with the other option "run task if logged in or not". I've read that testing this task is not possible manually. However the task runs when we log off the server automatically.

• Strange performance from RAID5 using WD RE4 disks

  I've noticed a bit of a performance issue with some WD RE4 drives I'm using under AMD's hardware RAID solution. First a bit of background: Environment: Windows 7 home premium x64 HDD's: 3x 1TB WD Raid Edition 4 in a RAID 5 setup with 128 kbyte stripe (2TB usable space) Testing Tool: HD Tune, process set to "High Priority" Processor: AMD Phenom II x6 1100T Ram: 16GB DDR3/1600mhz Motherboard: MSI 970A-G45 The image below pretty much depicts the issue I'm having. Every test has the same thing, a period of similar length where the performance drops to a few megabytes a second. This can't be a TLER issue as the purpose of RE4's is to work around that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In our environment the end user Remote Desktop Client settings take precedence. If printing is disabled on the client but enabled in the user's AD profile then printing is not available. Is this working by design or can I change something to allow the user environment settings in AD to override the end user settings RDC settings?

  What lasts longer: Data stored on non-volatile flash RAM (USB stick or SD cards?), optical media (CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray?), or magnetic disk (floppies, hard drives?) My gut tells me optical media, but I'm not sure. Furthermore, which of those digital media would be most suitable for long-term data storage where environmental issues are unknown, such as low/high temperature or humidity? For example, what digital media could be stored in a basement, attic, or time capsule, and be expected to survive a reasonably long time? e.g. a lifetime, and then some. Update: Looks like optical media and magnetic tape each have one vote below. Does anybody else have an opinion or know of a study comparing the two?

  I was enjoying a Movie when my Ubuntu suddenly hung. At the next reboot, here is the message: One or more of the mounts listed in /etc/fstab cannot yet be mounted: /home: waiting for /dev/disk/by-uuid/.... Press ESC to enter a recovery shell. Problems: When I enter recovery shell, I don't know that to do. If I press Ctrl+D, then the message above will reappear. What should I do? I checked with Ubuntu Live CD and my partition looks OK. I have 2 separate partitions for / and /home

• USB-Sticks and multiple Partitions

  Hello. I've got an USB-Stick with multiple Partitions on it (FAT32 (active), FAT32, Ext2 <-- that's another story) and it seems like that my Windows XP can only mount the first partition of the stick. If I try to mount the second one using the volume manager it tells me that I need to make it active and reboot...is it really that limited or am I just missing something here? Partitions: FAT32, System Rescue CD, bootable and active FAT32, some tools ext2, some data (I know that I need extra drivers etc., but that's not asked here. Edit (Solution): Thanks to the answer with the RMB (ReMoveable Bit) I was able to dig up a solution described at this site (Section: On flash drive only the first partition works). Basically, there's an Hitachi Driver available which filters the RMB on Driver-Level, which just needs to be a little modified to function with basically every USB-Stick. All you need to do is adding the "Device Instance ID" to the driver and then use this driver.

  I have an Acer Aspire 3500WLMi laptop. It currently has a 40gb hard drive which I would like to upgrade. Could someone talk me through the process? I've listed my concerns/queries... Can I buy and install any 2.5" SATA or IDE hard drive into this machine? Should I buy somesort of USB caddy and clone my existing drive onto the new one via USB then physically swap the drives over? My current disk is partitioned to include a small amount of space for a Ubuntu install. Will a clone keep the current partition sizes or is it best for me to repartition once I've cloned? • Booting Linux from External HDD, with persistence

  I am trying to install Linux, specifically Lubuntu or BackTrack 5 on an external HDD (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex) but I have had no luck using YUMI, or Untebootin to get it working. I want the hard drive to be able to save the data within Linux (As in, If I install a program, it will stay there). I also tried doing this with a flash drive, which does boot, but it does not save data (I tried following Pendrive's tutorial on creating a casper-rw file and adding "persistent" to various files, but I cannot get it to save files. Basically, I just want a form of linux on a portable device that will save files and settings between boots Note: I do not have a CD to install from. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

• Compiling Ruby on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

  Hi, I am trying to follow this tutorial, on the subject of compiling ruby and rubygems on Snow Leopard: http://hivelogic.com/articles/compiling-ruby-rubygems-and-rails-on-snow-leopard I have added this to my ~/.profile: export PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:$PATH" But if I write: echo $PATH I get: /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin:/usr/X11/bin But in tutorial it says: You should see /usr/local/bin at the beginning of the line returned by the system. I have installed macports sometime ago and plenty of other software, perhaps it has changed the path. Anyway, I have tried to proceed with the installation, so I have built ruby, I did: ./configure --enable-shared --enable-pthread CFLAGS=-D_XOPEN_SOURCE=1 make sudo make install cd .. But when I do which ruby I get: /usr/bin/ruby And according to the tutorial that's wrong. Also if I do ruby -v I get the older version of ruby that was preinstalled on Snow Leopard and not the one I've compiled. Thanks.
