• Getting started and learning programming?

  Hello, I am looking to get started in programming. I am young and know some html as I am taking a Web Design class at my school now. I am planning to apply to Full Sail University when I graduate High School, but I would like to get started now so that I am ahead of the game if I get accepted. I want to learn any and all programing language's. I would appreciate it if anyone can help me out by telling me where I can learn. By in a book, web site, articles, blog, or whatever you can help me in I would appreciate it. Thanks.

• Need Help With Partioning

  I bought a new laptop with no OS and decided to try to linux (Ubuntu) for the first time in my life. It was a clean install, my laptop had no other OS present in it, not even DOS. While installing, it asked for partitioning. Out of the 320GB of free space I created a new partition of 20 GB and installed Ubuntu in it. The rest of the 300GB is still available as free space. Soon I realized that I can't use the 300GB of space and that only 20GB is available to me for use. Can anyone tell me how I can take away some free space away from the 300GB and add that to my 20GB partition? I have installed the Gparted Partition editor from the Ubuntu Software Center but have no idea how to go ahead with it. Thanks :)

• SharePoint 2010 PowerShell Script to Find All SPShellAdmins with Database Name

  Problem     Yesterday on Twitter my friend @cacallahan asked for some help on how she could get all SharePoint 2010 SPShellAdmin users and the associated database name.  I spent a few minutes and wrote up a script that gets this information and decided I’d post it here for others to enjoy.     Background     The Get-SPShellAdmin commandlet returns a listing of SPShellAdmins for the given database Id you pass in, or the farm configuration database by default.  For those unfamiliar, SPShellAdmin access is necessary for non-admin users to run PowerShell commands against a SharePoint 2010 farm (content and configuration databases specifically).  Click here to read an excellent guest post article my friend John Ferringer (twitter) wrote on the Hey Scripting Guy! blog regarding granting SPShellAdmin access.  Solution     Below is the script I wrote (formatted for space and to include comments) to provide the information needed. • Where&rsquo;s my start button?

  I have to be honest here for a moment. The one thing people most complain about when they talk about Windows 8 is that they miss the Start Button. You know, that dreaded thing that everybody hated when it was introduced… I usually don’t go into these kinds of discussions unless I am personally involved but this one I cannot let go. Why are people doing this? Windows 8 is a great OS. They have changed, updated and perfected so many things so there is enough to talk or write about. Yet, all articles or discussions come down to “Where’s my start button?” In order to save myself from having to explain this every single time I wrote this post and from now on I will simply refer to this blog when I get asked that question. Here it is. Your start menu is there. It’s right in front of your nose. It’s two dimensional, it’s got huge buttons (although they are more than just buttons, they’re alive and therefore called Live Tiles). Just go through those tiles and click what ever you want to start up. Don’t want to look for an item? Just start typing. Really it is that simple. When you are on the start screen just start typing (part of) the name of the program you want and you’ll find it.  As you see in the attached example I started typing “word” and it found Word, Wordfeud, Wordament etc. If you want to find something else besides a program (say you want to change the region you’re in) just click on Settings (it will already show you how many hits there are in that section). People, my request is: dive into something before you complain about it. Look around. This feature is so much easier to use than the old stuff. But you have to know about it. So. I won’t get into this discussion anymore.

• SQLite with two python processes accessing it: one reading, one writing

  I'm developing a small system with two components: one polls data from an internet resource and translates it into sql data to persist it locally; the second one reads that sql data from the local instance and serves it via json and a restful api. I was originally planning to persist the data with postgresql, but because the application will have a very low-volume of data to store and traffic to serve, I thought that was overkill. Is SQLite up to the job? I love the idea of the small footprint and no need to maintain yet another sql server for this one task, but am concerned about concurrency. It seems that with write ahead logging enabled, concurrently reading and writing a SQLite database can happen without locking either process out of the database. Can a single SQLite instance sustain two concurrent processes accessing it, if only one reads and the other writes? I started writing the code but was wondering if this is a misapplication of SQLite.

  On button click in a winform application I am executing cmd.exe file (Using system("cmd.exe");), which opens perfectly fine and displays the following: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 6.1.7601] (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. C: A\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\WinformTest\WinformTest> What I want is when a user click the button, the cmd.exe open with default command and a message like this: Please change command options and press enter to get started experimenting C: A\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\WinformTest\WinformTest> reduction -x 33554432 -i Notice a new command and a message is already there. Can anybody tell me how to go for this?

• What would you say to a bunch of software engineering students on their first day at college?

  Next Friday I'm giving a short (30 min.) talk to a bunch of software engineering students who will be attending the same university I did. Some context: The place is Montevideo, Uruguay The university is Universidad de la República (public, free university) The Software Engineering programme takes 5 years (if you're very good and don't start working early). Around 800 new students per year, around 80 graduates per year. Conditions are harsh, particularly the first two years. Most of them probably have no idea what software engineering or programming is. My goal would be to somehow give them an idea of the field and hopefully motivate them to endure the hardships ahead to eventually become successful developers. So the question is: what would you tell these people?

• Windows Explorer Jumplist delay

  I've begun to have an issue with the Jump list for Windows Explorer (Windows 7). What happens is that when i gesture click, or right click on the explorer icon the first time after rebooting the initial menu (Windows Explorer, Unpin) and the Jump List with my pinned folders and frequent folders works fine. Any subsequent attempt will open the initial menu, but the jump list will experience a long delay (10-20 seconds) before the pinned and frequent folders will pop up. Initially my frequent folders would grab a networked drive which I thought might be the cause. I have removed that from the list and there is still no change. I really enjoy being able to quickly hit directories i use often and this is quite frustrating. Any help would be extremely appreciated.

• Program to customize mouse buttons?

  I have a Logitech M510 wireless mouse and am on a Mac. Right now I can assign different actions to the 2 thumb buttons through the Logitech control panel. What I want to do is have mouse button combos to perform actions. So if I am holding thumb button 1 and click the left button, a tab will close in Chrome. As well as any other "hold one button, click another" combination. Is there any program out there that gives this type of customization?

  in MVC3 razor we found that their is no way to watch the design in Visual studio as well we can see aspx file by going to design mode. their is a little trick to solve this issue first is that if you have Expression web or Vs 2008 then open the file on them how see here in expression web 4 you need to add the extension .cshtml and open them as html as we open other. in Visual studio 2008 you need to add the extension .cshtml and set them open as html. well their is no big trouble if design not worked. but in some case when you need to get this issue solved this need to be work for configuration do this: Expression Web 4 > tools > application options > configure editor > click on new extension icon show in exact left put the cshtml in the window they show you and choose expression web [open as html] after that you can see the design in expression web. by default Expression web not have cshtml as known extension so you need to do that to add them because without it they never handle cshtml file and refer them to Visual studio. after setting this you  EW4 open the cshtml file as html and show you design in design mode. in Visual studio 2008 you can use same trick to solve this issue just follow this step > options > text editors > file extension put cshtml in textbox and set the option html editor from dropdown and click on add and ok this will open your cshtml file as html.

• What does the arxiv.org anti-bot "search and destroy" actually do?

  The lanl.arxiv.org math and scientific preprint service (formerly known as xxx.lanl.gov) has a strict policy against bots that ignore its robots.txt, Robots Beware. On that page, the have a link labelled with "Click here to initiate automated 'seek-and-destroy' against your site", which is forbidden by their robots.txt but presumably badly behaved robots will follow it, and reap the consequences. The question, what are the actual consequences? I have never had the guts to actually click on that link to see what it does. What can they be doing that is both effective and legal?

• Are there Know issues with Ubuntu 11 and socket 1155? acpi=off

  Since building my new system I cant get Ubuntu (or any other flavor of Linux) to "run" properly. To boot the live cd I have to "F6" and turn off acpi or the screen halts at a black screen with "boot stuff" written above the blinking curser. When installed I can only boot if I enter repair mode from Grub menu then once in repair mode I choose Boot Normally and it boots to the desktop. Once on the desktop I can "click" (with the mouse) only on one thing...like firefox or "desktop appearance" and the mouse no longer "clicks" on anything else ...its like the computer freezes but the mouse still moves. I end up using the reset button to restart the computer. I was able to update when prompted to do so....but at the end of the update I could not "click" the "finish" and had to use the manual reset button. I have run Ubuntu since v 8... My system specs are: intel i7 2600k ...Graphics disabled in bios... Asus p8z68-v pro.... 16G Kingston HyperX.... 2 EVGA GTX 570 in SLI.... Mouse is a simple Logitech usb Wireless. Ubuntu installed on secondary sata drive.

  i have a 1st person camera that collides with walls, i also have a small sphere in front of my camera denoted by the camera position plus the distance ahead.   I get this two Exchange 2010 Global Address book related event IDs: Event ID 9331 MSExchangeSA OABGen encountered error 80004005 (internal ID 50101f1) accessing the public folder database while generating the offline address list for address list '/'. -\Default Offline Address List and Event ID 9335 MSExchangeSA OABGen encountered error 80004005 while cleaning the offline address list public folders under /o=xxxxx xxxx/cn=addrlists/cn=oabs/cn=Default Offline Address List. Please make sure the public folder database is mounted and replicas exist of the offline address list folders. No offline address lists have been generated. Please check the event log for more information. -\Default Offline Address List It is Exchange 2010 SP2 sitting on Windows 2008 enterprise edition. Essentially the issue is that the global address book is not being updated on Outlook clients. We are using Outlook 2007 and 2010. So far I have tried running the following command: Update-FileDistributionService -Identity ExchangeServer -Type "OAB" And I tried this solution as well: 1) Make sure the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant is running. It will be set to start automatically by default, but it doesn't. This is a known issue. Start this service manually. When running, you will not get an error when trying to update the GAL. 2) "Apply" any changes made to any address lists before the GAL will update Outlook properly. In Organization Configuration - Mailbox in EMC, view the properties of the Default Global Address Book in the Offline Address Book tab. In the properties window, select the Address Lists tab. This shows which address lists makes up the GAL. 3) Close the properties window and select the Address Lists tab in the Organization Configuration - Mailbox. Right-click each address list used by the Def GAL and click "Apply" (make sure the "Immediately" radio button is checked). 4) Last, go back to the Offline Address Book tab, right-click the GAL and select "Update". After a few send/receives in the Outlook clients, their Glogal Address List should update to show the latest changes. Neither one of those solutions helped. So I am not really sure what to do here. Also, I am aware of changing registry on each local computers, but it would be close to impossible as we have 8 offices in 3 different countries. Any suggestions? EDIT 7.XII.2012 @ 10.35 I forgot to mention that we did rebuild the address book and that didn't help.

• How to recover from terminal custom setup

  I installed ubuntu 12.04 and I added "Terminal" to the launcher bar, the default size of the terminal is a bit small, after some googling here is how I made the disaster change: At HUD menu, type "preference" and I see the option of Edit > preference, this is as I expected After I clicked the option, I forget the exact steps, but somehow I came to some configuration panel and there is a checkbox for terminal "custom" and I checked it now an input box is enabled and I type gnome-terminal --geometry 160x50 Now the problem comes, whenever I click the terminal button at the launcher bar, new terminal windows pops up endlessly from everywhere, I cannot do anything any more except logout or shutdown. The weird thing is, after I come back, I cannot get that Edit > preference any more when I type "preference" in HUD, I tried "Edit", "preference". To be clear, I still can use the computer as long as I do not click that terminal button, but I really want to use terminal to run commands. Help is appreciated greatly! Update - OK, figured out. Go to /home/jibin/.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default and open that xml file, I can see the options I changed at the GUI, remove them and terminal runs good. The preference HUD is back also, it is actually Profile Preference and it is only available when terminal is open. Continue my ubuntu-ing...

• Is it convenient to use a XML/JSON generated based system? [closed]

  One of my clients insists that we missed a requisite for the project(a little social network, using PHP + MySql), is that all queries are made from XML / JSON static files (using AJAX) and not directly from the database. Edit: The main reason, stated by client, is a way to economize bandwith. Even the file loading, has to be using AJAX, to avoid server side processing. We will still use a database to store and insert data. These XML / JSON files will be (re) generated whenever any data is changed by CMS or users. As the project was developed without this "technique", we'll have a lot of work ahead, so I would like to avoid that. I'm asking if it's convenient to use a XML generated based system, because I think a database is already "optimized" and secure to deal with a lot of data traffic. Other issue I'm afraid of, is a chance of conflict when a user is trying to read a XML/JSON which is being just generated.

• Exchange 2010 Deployment Notes - ISA 2004 Server Issue

  An interesting ISA 2004 tidbit … While we were setting up our Exchange 2010 ActiveSync environment, we encountered a problem where we could not successfully telnet over port 443 from one of our ISA 2004 Servers to our Exchange 2010 Client Access Server Array. When we tried to telnet over port 443 from the ISA Server to the Client Access Server Array name, we would get a “Could not open connection to the host on port 443: Connect failed” error message. Also, when we used portqry over port 443 from the ISA Server to the Client Access Server Array name, we would get a “Error opening socket: 10065” and “No route to host” error messages. It was odd because we did not have any problems with using ping or tracert from the ISA Server to the Client Access Server Array and our firewall firewall policy was allowing 443 traffic to pass through. After some troubleshooting, we were able to telnet and use portqry over port 443 successfully if we stopped the Microsoft Firewall service on the ISA 2004 Server.  So, it was strictly a problem with ISA.  Eventually, we were able to isolate the problem to a ISA 2004 Server System Policy setting as shown below (to modify the System Policy, right-click Firewall Policy and click Edit System Policy). Under the Diagnostics Services – HTTP Connectivity verifiers Configuration Group, you need to enable the configuration group under the General tab to resolve the problem.  After we enabled the setting, we no longer had a problem.
