• Alternative to Firefox's Tab Groups feature for Chromium/Chrome

  Firefox keeps crashing the whole time on my Lubuntu 12.04 since version 12, I don't know why, I am running it on a Pentium IV desktop so might be CPU shortage, however I use the same set of extensions and configurations that I have on Windows' Firefox and it rarely crashes, runs smoothly and besides on Windows it can handle much more tabs opened before some freeze actually happens. Chromium is working better so far on Lubuntu, but I really do miss the Tab Groups Firefox feature, which is great to group tabs and organize them, it really is a boost on my productivity. Are you aware of any add-on which is similar for Chrome/Chromium? I've searched around on Chrome's Web Store but no luck at the moment.

• Trouble with 12.10 lag

  Well basicly lately I have been having lag problems with 12.10. I will post my specs, but before the update to 12.10, it said that I had intel graphics. Now it says I have Gallium. My specs: *Memory: 3.9 GiB *Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5500 @ 2.80GHz × 2 *Graphics: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.2, 128 bits) (used to say intel graphics) *OS Type: 32-bit *Disk: 486.1 GB The output of the command sudo apt-cache check is this: E: Invalid operation check The output of the command sudo lspci -nnk | grep -A5 VGA is this: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2e32] (rev 03) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. • problems with graphic performance in Ubuntu 12.04

  in advance: my English is not perfect ;) processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU E8500 @ 3.16GHz × 2 memory: 3,9 GiB graphics: GeForce GTX 460 Ubuntu 12.04 32-Bit fresh installed (previously 11.10 32-Bit) driver: NVIDIAs accelerated Driver (Version current-updates) probelm: In Ubuntu 12.04 I have problems with the performance of the graphics (games for example: Volley Brwawl, Neverball, Beep and Minecraft), and effects of windows (always at minimize, maximize...) There are laggs at animations, and the laggs in games are extremely annoying. Problems occur only in Ubuntu 12.04, everything was good in 11.10. No Problems with YouTube videos, HD videos. Is there a solution? BBecause I have found nothing here in the Forum and on Google. Or is an update coming soonfor driver or whatever? (This Bug is already registered in Launchpad.) Thank you!

• Override Built-In Maverick Keyboard Shortcuts

  Having used the Command+M keyboard shortcut to minimize windows in OS X, I'd like to use the same functionality in Ubuntu 10.10. When I try, though, it only brings up the "communications" section of the indicator applet; like so: In the Keyboard Shortcuts preferences, I have set as the minimize shortcut "Mod4+M", which I got by capturing the Apple "Command" key and the "M" key. I find no other shortcut using this key combination in Keyboard Shortcuts, and yet I cannot get the window to minimize when using it. Does anyone know how to override Ubuntu's default usage of this key combination? Thanks!

• What is a good method for coloring textures based on a palette in XNA?

  I've been trying to work on a game with the look of an 8-bit game using XNA, specifically using the NES as a guide. The NES has a very specific palette and each sprite can use up to 4 colors from that palette. How could I emulate this? The current way I accomplish this is I have a texture with defined values which act as indexes to an array of colors I pass to the GPU. I imagine there must be a better way than this, but maybe this is the best way? I don't want to simply make sure I draw every sprite with the right colors because I want to be able to dynamically alter the palette. I'd also prefer not to alter the texture directly using the CPU.

  This question already has an answer here: Is the usage of internal scope blocks within a function bad style? 3 answers In many languages (e.g. both Perl and Java - which are the two languages I work most with) it is possible to narrow the scope of local variables by declaring them within a block. Although it adds extra code length (the opening and closing block braces), and possibly reduces readability, should I create blocks purely to narrow the scope of variables to the statements that use the variables and to uphold the principle of narrowest scope or does this sacrifice succinctness and readability just to unnecessarily uphold an agreed 'best practice' principle? I usually declare local variables to functions/methods at the start of the function to aid readability, but I could not do this, and just create blocks throughout the function and declare the variables throughout the code - within those blocks - to narrow their scope.

However, I need some examples of discussions on designing a distributed system given a scenario. For example, if I were to design a distributed system to calculate if a number N is primary or not, what will the be design of the system, what will be the impact of network latency, CPU performance, node failure, addition of nodes, time synchronization etc. If you guys could present your in-depth thoughts on this example, or point me to some similar discussion, that would be really helpful.

• Are there any adverse side effects to loading html5shiv in every browser?

  On the html5shiv Google Code page the example usage includes an IE conditional: <!--[if lt IE 9]> <script src="dist/html5shiv.js"></script> <![endif]--> However on the html5shiv github page, the description explains: This script is the defacto way to enable use of HTML5 sectioning elements in legacy Internet Explorer, as well as default HTML5 styling in Internet Explorer 6 - 9, Safari 4.x (and iPhone 3.x), and Firefox 3.x. An obvious contradiction. So to satisfy my curiosity, for anyone who has studied the code, are there any adverse side affects to loading html5shiv in every browser (without the IE conditional)? EDIT: My goal, obviously, is to use the shiv without the IE conditional.

• Upgrade to 12.04, nothing in dash, no date&time

  I've upgraded from ubuntu netbook remix something to 12.04 lts, and I've got two issues. (Got an Asus eeePc 32bits, Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 and Intel Atom CPU N270 @ 1.6Ghz x2) Nothing in the dash. Only the "home" tab, other tabs are missing. No search result whatsoever. Missing elements in the system panel, privacy and date&time. No date&time on the right corner either. I've tried to reset unity with the terminal but the process was a whole mess full of errors. It did show date&time in the system panel (not on the top-right corner) while the process was going on in the terminal. But then it was such a mess (no more icons on the right corner amongst other things), and the process wouldn't complete: so I had to reboot the computer and get unity as before, still no date&time and privacy.   I'm trying to create a dual-boot laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 and some flavor of Windows (TBD). To do that, I need to do some work on partitions & install 12.04. To do that, I need to create a bootable USB that will work with my non-PAE-capable CPU. Someone pointed me to a mini.iso that was allegedly non-PAE-friendly, but it gave me the same error as the straightup 12.04 desktop ISO. What version do I actually need? (This isn't going to be a virtual machine--I don't think the laptop has the RAM to handle that happily--so enabling PAE in the virtual machineware doesn't help me.)

• how to install/compile CORSIKA/FLUKA for Ubuntu x32 12.04?

  I want to use some programs (CORSIKA/FLUKA) which are essentially designed for 32 bit systems. so I installed Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit on my system (Intel® Core™ i7-2700K CPU @ 3.50GHz × 8). Before this I had installed Ubuntu 9.10 (32-bit) on an older system and installed g77 from hardy repositories, compiled those programs without any problem. But this time when changing the repositories, g77 could not be installed even i removed all the things that i thought make this installation impossible, for example I need gcc-3.4 and removed all newer versions and tried to install them from hardy repositories. but the problem is that, whenever I have g77, corsika does not compile, and whenever I remove it, fluka does not compile, and also i received a error messages like this: crt1.o not found in /usr/bin/lb. In fact these .o files does not exist on my system user/bin/lb I have no directory lb there? I do not know how to link it? Or do i need to reinstall everything?

  When is it best to use Iterators in PHP, and how can they be implemented to best avoid loading all objects into memory simultaneously? Do any constructs exist in PHP so that we can queue up results of an operation for use with an Iterator, while again avoiding loading all objects into memory simultaneously? An example would be a curl HTTP request against a REST server In the case of an HTTP request that returns all results at once (a la curl), would we be better off to go with streaming results, and if so, are there any limitations or pitfalls to be aware of? If using streaming, is it better to replace curl with a PHP native stream/socket? My intention is to implement Iterators for a REST client, and separately a document ORM that I'm maintaining, but only if I can do so while gaining benefits from reduced memory usage, increased performance, etc. Thanks in advance for any responses :-)

• Grid based collision - How many cells?

  The game I'm creating is a bullet hell game, so there can be quite a few objects on the screen at any given time. It probably maxes out at about 40 enemies and 200 or so bullets. That being said, I'm splitting up the playing field into a grid for my collision checking. Right now, it's only 8 cells. How many would be optimal? I'm worried that if I use too many, I'll be wasting CPU power. My main concern is processing power, to make the game run smoothly. RAM is not a big concern for me.

• Looking for a non-cryptographic hash function that returns a single character

  Suppose I have a dictionary of ASCII words stored in uppercase. I also want to save those words into separate files so that the total word count of each file is approximately the same. By simply looking at the word I need to know which file it should be in (if it's there at all). Duplicate words should go into the same file and overwrite the last one. My first attempt at solving this problem is to use .NET's object.GetHashCode() function and .Trim() to get one of the "random" characters that pop up. I asked a similar question here If I only use one character of object.GetHashCode() I would get a hash code character of A..Z or 0..9. However saving the result of GetHashCode to disk is a no-no so I need a substitute. Question: What algorithm (or subset of an algorithm) is appropriate for pigeonholing strings into a single character or range of characters (Like hex 0..F offers 16 chars)? Real world usage: I'll use this answer to modify the Partition key used in Azure Table storage as described here

  I got a question about creating LDOM domains: "I have a Server Pool set up, and I need to create a secondary LDom domain on a machine in the pool. When I click on the machine, though, the 'create logical domain' command is grayed out. The machine still has available CPU threads and free RAM. What's going on?" This one has an easy answer. In a Server Pool, the Create Logical Domain action is under the pool's actions, rather than the individual machine's actions. This is because the Server Pool decides where to put the new domain based on the Server Pool's placement policy. • Slow Resume After suspend having chrome running with many tabs

  I usually use chrome and Firefox for browsing. I also open many tabs (around 40 in both some times). The problem I have occurs when I resume the PC after having suspended it: It takes from 2 to 5 minutes sometimes to just get back normally. Does this have to do with memory usage not properly resuming? Is it a bug in Chrome/Firefox or Ubuntu itself? Note that I just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.10 and I was having the problem on both releases, which makes me guess that it has to do with Ubuntu not resuming well if some memory-heavy apps were running before the suspend occured.
