• How to structure an application which reads UPC barcodes

  I have no previous experience on creating a project for a seller which will use barcode reader. I am trying to put together a small project but I cannot figure out how the pieces should glue together. I will create a sample with Motorola Scanner SDK to read barcodes and from that point, I have couple of questions: How UPC barcodes work in general? AFAIK, a barcode stores the manufacturer and product info but no price data. Should I store price information inside a database which corresponds to barcode data? I would really appreciate if you can guide me here.

• How to let Linux Python application handle termination on user logout correctly?

  I have written a Linux GUI application in Python that needs to do some cleanup tasks before being terminated when the user logs out. Unfortunately it seems, that on logout, all applications are killed. I tried both to handle POSIX signals and DBUS notifications, but nothing worked. Any idea what I could have made wrong? On application startup I register some termination handlers: # create graceful shutdown mechanisms signal.signal(signal.SIGTERM, self.on_signal_term) self.bus = dbus.SessionBus() self.bus.call_on_disconnection(self.on_session_disconnect) When the user logs out, neither self.on_signal_term nor self.on_session_disconnect are called. • Custom PCI bracket with support, for custom PCB?

  I am considering to put a custom PCB card that I made, into my computer. It won't go on any PCI connector, it plugs in on a USB connector on the motherboard, via a ribbon cable. I need thou to plug a device to it; which means that either I leave the PCB outside the case, hanging by the ribbon (bad idea), or I could put it in a PCI slot, using a bracket. The issue is that the brackets that I have, do not have tabs, so I have no way to screw the PCB on them. I was hoping to find something that would allow me to put the PCB on it, and then just fit it in the PCI bracket opening, like this: http://www.idotpc.com/TheStore/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=1203&idcategory=0 This one won't fit the bill since the holes are too close apart, compared to the one that I have already on the PCB (and can't make more holes). Do you know if there is a place where they make universal PCI bracket mounting systems for custom PCB? I just need one, so can't even order a custom one (they ask me 120 dollars for one). • How can I remove all updates installed after a specific date?

  I have allowed the update manager to install a 200 Mib of updates, and I think that these update run my graphics driver into a problem. So, I need a way to remove the updates that have been installed since 30th of may 12 for example (or any other date). If I have to remove them manually (in the case of uninstalling them one by one), you are kindly requested to give me the instructions of how to do that.

• How to create and maintain patch on Debian package?

  I want to patch on Trac package. I know how to patch and rebuild the package, but there are some things I don't understand very well. My patch is something dangerous and not likely to commit back to the community. So, let me just say, it's a very private patch. But, I want my patch keep working when the Ubuntu packages upgrade. (Should I apt-get source trac and move my patch to the new version of source directory each time the Trac upgrades?) I see there is a patch/ directory (many using quilt I guess) in debian/, but I don't know how to use it? Will debuild automatic apply all patches in the patch/ directory? And what about dpkg-buildpackage? Is there some environ variables to control the selection of patches to apply?

• How can I improve the battery life under 12.04 on my Inspiron 14z? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Tips to extend battery life for laptops and notebooks 24 answers How do I improve the battery life of my Inspiron 14z under Ubuntu 12.04? This laptop gets 4-5 hours of battery life using Windows (e.g. here). I've removed Windows, installed Ubuntu 12.04 and the initial battery life was only 2 hours. With some tweaks (described below) it's still only ~2.5 hours. For reference, the laptop is the latest model of the 14z: i5-3337U processor 32GB MSATA, 500GB HDD (5400rpm) AMD Radeon HD7570M graphics card I have put ext4 partitions on both the SSD and the HDD, and have mounted / to the SSD and /home to the HDD. I also put a 24gb linux swap partition at the start of the HDD, though I figure this won't be used all that much (the laptop has 8gb of RAM). After googling around and reading Ask Ubuntu and other sites extensively, I have done the following steps, and they have improved the battery life ~30 minutes (exact improvement not clear, but battery life is still nowhere near 4-5 hours). Installed Jupiter (and set Performance to "Power Saving") Installed laptop-mode-tools cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode now outputs 5 (previously it output 0) But it's not clear that this will help: AskUbuntu question Turned down the brightness of my screen from full to 1/3 Other things I have heard about but have not tried for fear of frying the laptop or my linux install: Add "pcie_aspm=force" at the end of the line with "quiet splash" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg Enable ALPM, but it may already be enabled in 12.04? Enable i915 framebuffer compression Use a propietary driver for the graphics card? Turn off the graphics card? (what would happen if I relied on the internal Intel bridge?) Use TLP? Spin down the HDD more aggressively (howto, but I think laptop-mode-tools does this already) The only other thing I've noticed is that plastic just above the F5, F6 and F7 keys gets really hot. According to Jupiter my CPU temperature is only 69 celsius and the System Monitor shows CPU load at 7% so I don't think it's the CPU. Maybe it's the graphics card? Also, I've set up MongoDB and LAMP on the machine as well. When I run powertop MongoDB is high in the list, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to battery life because I'm not actually doing anything with MongoDB most of the time.   This answer says: The base of the operating system, Debian, comes in three versions: Stable, Testing and Unstable. Normally, Ubuntu is based on Testing; the LTS releases are based on Stable. That cannot be true then for 12.04 because Debian Stable (Squeeze) is almost going to be old-stable, and it's obvious that the kernel versions in 12.04, packages, etc. cannot have come from Debian Squeeze. So then what other Debian Stable is there for Precise to be based on?

• Many user stories share the same technical tasks: what to do?

  A little introduction to my case: As part of a bigger product, my team is asked to realize a small IDE for a DSL. The user of this product will be able to make function calls in the code and we are also asked to provide some useful function libraries. The team, together with the PO, put on the wall a certain number of user stories regarding the various libraries for the IDE user. When estimating the first of those stories, the team decided that the function call mechanism would have been an engaging but not completely obvious task, so the estimate for that user story raised up from a simple 3 to a more dangerous 5. Coming to the problem: The team then moved to the user stories regarding the other libraries, actually 10 stories, and added those 2 points of "function call mechanism" thing to each of those user story. This immediately raised up the total points for the product of 20 points! Everyone in the team knows that each user story could be picked up by the PO for the next iteration at any time, so we shouldn't isolate that part in one user story, but those 20 points feel so awfully unrealistic! I've proposed a solution, but I'm absolutely not satisfied: We created a "Design story" and put those annoying 2 points over it. However when we came to realize and demonstrate it to our customers, we were unable to show something really valuable for them about that story! Here the problem is whether we should ignore the principle of having isolated user stories (without any dependency between them). What would you do, or even better what have you done, in situations like this? (a small foot-note: following a suggestion I've moved this question from stackoverflow)

• Fan working non-stop on a Dell Inspiron 5110

  First of all i'm new at ubuntu. I've only tried 11.10 before 12.04. Since then my notebook's(Dell Insprion 5110) fan was working non-stop. And also battery lasts in 2 hours. So i made a research. Some said it's about graphics card driver. I've tried so many things, so many codes but i get no result. • Do you charge a client for email and chat communication as a freelancer? [closed]

  For a project that is billed by hours, should a freelancer charge the client for the amount of time he/she spends on email/chat correspondence? For example, the client sends an email to the the freelancer, outlining the requirements. Should the freelancer charge the client for the time during which he/she reads the email and writes a reply. The same goes for chat conversations for clarifying the requirements. In particular, if the freelancer's English is not very good, so that he/she spends extra time on understanding what the client wants and explaining him/herself (e.g. copying and pasting into Google Translate), should such time be charged to the client too?

• Uninstall broken package

  Times ago I have installed Linux mint stuff on my Ubuntu 11.10 (now 12.04). I accidentally removed some files manually ( they were under /usr/share.). Now it is impossible to remove the related deb packages, and synaptic report various errors. How can remove them bypassing errors? It is possible view the installed files in synaptic and remove them manually, but is tedious...also remain the problem to remove the files entry from the apt database. Any suggestion?

• Seeing double-cursor in 'recursive RDP'

  I'm using a Virtual PC VM on my PC to connect to a remote PC using RDP over a VPN. It works just fine except that in the RDP session, I often see a double mouse cursor... I get a standard mouse-arrow and the context-specific cursor such as a caret or hourglass. It's not a big problem but rather annoying and I wondered if there's any way to fix it, or at least understand where it comes from? Is it because I'm effectively running one RDP session from inside another? My host PC runs W7, my local VM runs XP, and the remote PC access using RDP is W7. Thankyou for any help.

• Programming vs Planning

  Recently I have been tasked with more High level planning assignments due to the lead developer of my team leaving. I hate long term planning. My brain just doesn't naturally seem wired for it and I am not interested enough in it to spend the time to learn it (it is hard enough to keep up with the programming side of the picture). Can I still be a good programmer without being a high level planer too? Are you expected to be good at planning out the entire product and picking a date, as part of being a senior programmer. Is it possible to be a good programmer and not a high level planner?

• Moving windows on Windows like on Gnome (Alt+DnD)?

  Is there a hidden setting or an external utility that would enable moving windows on Windows like on GNOME? I'm particularly thinking of moving windows using Alt + Drag and drop (which can be changed to Win + drag and drop). I have machine with Windows (7) and two big monitors at work, and I tend to use multiple smaller windows. Moving them quickly around is essential, so I'm always missing this GNOME feature.

  I am trying to download kcachegrind after a reinstallation of my OS. But I keep getting "dependency" failures. I have tried going through the Ubuntu software manager (which worked perfectly before...) and Synaptic. With synaptic, I got specific package failures and when I searched for the packages I got more package dependencies. After the 5th time of this I gave up because there must be something else going on. Please help?

• How do I know if a particular build has a particular version control change in it?

  Let's say I have a build. I need to know if a particular changelist/commit is present in that build. How would I solve this problem? I can think of a couple of possible approaches: 1) Add the changelist number into the binary so that I can look somewhere in the GUI and know what the changelist number is. I can then use this information to determine if the change I'm interested in is within that build. 2) Tag version control using some string that uniquely identifies that build. What unique string would I use? Is either of these two better? Are there any other better approaches? The solution would have to work for both Mac and Windows builds.

  Bigger companies usually have the problem, that it is not possible to write all programs employees want (to save time and to optimize processes) due to a lack of staff and money. Then hidden programs will be created by some people having (at least some) coding experience (or by cheap students/interns...). Under some circumstances these applications will raise in importance and spread from one user to a whole department. Then there is the critical point: Who will maintain the application, add new features, ...? And this app is critical. It IS needed. But the intern has left the company. No one knows how it works. You only have a bunch of sources and some sort of documentation. How do you cope with these applications? Can you "forbid" them? Can you control them? Do you have to write all apps (not Excel macros or some minor stuff) in the IT department?

• Can not connect remotely to MySQL Server on Ubuntu 10.10

  Ok I have searched google for two days trying to get this to work. Here are the steps I have taken so far: Clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 Install mysql 5.1 as well as admin Comment out the bind address in the config file Create a new database Create a new user that is username@% to allow remote connections Grant all access to this user to the new database EXCEPT the grant option Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the localhost Login on the server is ok using this new user and database on the server internal network ip Login from a remote computer is ok using this new user and database using the internal network ip Login is not working when logging in with this username and database using the external ip address from the server or the remote computer. I have port forwarding enabled for this port and it is viewable from outside as confirmed by canyouseeme.org I have nmap'd using the following command on the internal ip and get the below result: nmap -PN -p 3306 192.168.1.73 Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-02-19 13:41 PST Nmap scan report for computername-System-Name (192.168.1.73) Host is up (0.00064s latency). PORT STATE SERVICE 3306/tcp open mysql Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.23 seconds I have nmap'd using the following command on the internal ip and get the below result(I have hidden ip for obvious reasons): nmap -PN -p 3306 xxx.xxx.xx.xxx Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2011-02-19 13:42 PST Nmap scan report for HOSTNAME (xxx.xxx.xx.xxx) Host is up (0.00056s latency). I have tried everything under the moon and still can not connect from a remote external ip address. • How to remove package in bad state, software center freezes, no synaptic

  When 'Update Manager' starts running, it tells me that I need to do a 'Partial Upgrade', when I start doing the upgrade, it tells me "Remove package in bad state The package 'linux-headers-3.0.0-19' is in an inconsistent state and needs to be reinstalled, but no archive can be found for it. Do you want to remove this package now to continue?" When I click 'Yes' the program just closes. I have tried to go into the software center and reinstall the 'linux-headers-3.0.0-19' ubuntu software center just freezes. Right now I cannot run 'Synaptic', or remove any software. Please help!

• How can I convince a project manager that there is no way to solve all the compatibility issues?

  I have been working on this project for more than a year now, and we are close to release, the project manager wants the product to be perfect and working in every single aspect. I like that and I love working under the perfection idea, but it seems he is delaying the launch too much because of compatibility issues, he wants the product to work in every single installation, every single configuration possible, and in most cases, the product just works without issues when it's on the hands of the client. UPDATE : yes the product doesn't work properly when there are conflicts, for example, other products that don't use guidelines nor standards to load libraries (causes double library load which leads to failure), cache is another example and so on..... but we warn the clients about the conflict before purchasing and help them fixing it after purchasing I've tried to explain it by giving some examples on major products, he understands the situation, but can not believe that it is near impossible (if it is not impossible) to do what he wants. Hope it is clarified enough for the community to answer.

  Is there a equivalent of this command; yum list kernel-headers --showduplicates on Ubuntu with apt-get, apt-cache etc. The above command lists various versions of the kernel-headers rpm available on F20/RHEL or installations. • What makes a theme "Premium"

  I have a lot of time invested in creating Wordpress templates. I want to release combinations of these templates along with different styles and Fancy Front pages as "Premium Wordpress Themes". What I need to know is what does "Premium" mean? What do people expect of a GPL theme vs. a Premium theme? Are there features that are considered required to be premium? Are there features that are in demand but considered "exceptional" i.e. not part of every premium theme? How can I tell the difference? I have heard tounge-in-cheek answers that say that any theme that makes money is premium, but I mean to ask about what gives an outstanding theme it's quality. Why is it worth more? I am technically able to do many things, but as a lone developer with a family to feed, I can't afford to spend time on features that no one cares about. I have to try to isolate the things that people want. This is serious food and rent to me. How can I get this kind of info so I can make my project successful?
