  • Advantages/disadvantages of browser-based interface vs. graphics

    Hello everyone, I'm in the design phase for a desktop-based application. Because of the nature of this particular application, I believe it would benefit greatly from a web-based approach (i.e., allowing a user to interface with the application through a browser running in kiosk mode) in order to leverage the simplicity of HTML/CSS/JS and the availability of many great JS interface plugins. Does taking this approach (rather than coding in a native or cross-platform graphics library) come with any gotchas?

  • How to force disconnect users from a box?

It lists all the users logged in to a box and you can force disconnect of some, because, for example, you want to Remote Desktop to it and there's too many users.

  • SharePoint Designer for Mac?

    I'm looking for some way of editing SharePoint ASPX pages on my Mac, using either a local text editor or some kind of remote-into-the-SP-server solution (like emacs with tramp). I know that Cyberduck has the ability to open WebDAV servers with NTLM authentication, but I've been unable to get that to work. So far, the only solution I've found is to use a remote desktop connection to a Windows Server, and run SharePoint Designer from there. Anyone know of either a better method, or a SharePoint Designer alternative?

    Create custom component which contains Combobox and Datagrid. Application conations two button 1) Same Window and 2) New Window. (Label of two button) When you click on “Same Window” button your custom component should get added dynamically in your application. And when you click on “New Window” button your custom component should get open in different window (it should get shifted from application and should appear in Window component). Issue faced:- Clicking on Combobox, list is not getting open as change event doesn’t get fired in Native Window as it looses reference from main application. Issue with DataGrid in Native window (AIR). • DataGridEvent.COLUMN_STRETCH event get affected if try to open datagrid in Native Window. • DataGridEvent get fired but takes long time or even stuck while column stretch Note: Application is an Desktop Application.   • Are there open source alternatives to Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, and similar DVCS browsing and management tools?

    I am aware of several tools/services that provide DVCS browsing and management such as Bitbucket, Github, Kiln, SCM-Manager and Rhodecode. However, the use case I am considering is one such that: Any source code must reside on an employers internal servers. The solution must be open source. It should provide a Bitbucket or Github like experience, including a project wiki, repository browsing and management, and social coding aspects such as code review. The solution should have mercurial support (if not support for other DVCSs). Of these, only SCM-Manager and RhodeCode come close as they can be installed on your own servers and are open source. However they do not have the Bitbucket or Github experience. There is no issue tracker or wiki and the UI, while functional, is not up to par with Github or Bitbucket. I can get close with Trac or Redmine with their repository browsers but unfortunately they do not have any repository management capabilities. Are there other open source tools out there that would provide a similar experience to Bitbucket, Github or Kiln?

    Hello guys... I have seen 2-3 ERPs in action. I am wondering what is better. Desktop based application or webbased displayed on a browser. My first expirience was with a web based ERP when i was 14 years old.. It was web based and terribly slow... For most simple task you had to do lots of clicks... no keyboard support ..... Pages took ages to load. Last year i worked for migrating to a newer computer some old terminal based cobol application. The computer that worked till today and still has no problem was from 1993. The user interface ofcourse was textbased.. The speed that guys placed orders was amazing! just typing the name of the customer , then 5-10 keys to add a product to order.... Comparing to this ERP the page for placing orders Link (click sales orders) seems terribly slow to add a product... No keyboard shortcut works to save what you added and generally i believe you need 4 times more time to place an order compared to the text interface... Having to use both mouse and keyboard for this task is BAD and sadistic... So how can tek heck these people ever use a system like that ??? So in the long run desktop application seems the only way... Ofcourse browsers support shortcuts but the way to overide the defaults that browsers uses isnt cross compatible... That is a hudge problem. Finnaly, if we MUST/forced use cloud in near future what about keyboard shortcuts?? I feel confused... I have seen converters of desktop applications to browser applications but are SLOW as hell... The question is what about user friendliness?What kind of application would you use?

  • Is it wise for a programmer to move into management?

    Many times, a developer has suggested that I become a team leader because I'm motivated, but during my career in the IT industry, I've seen so many people who are great at programming, move into management and they are miserable. I've also seen many managers return to programming stating "I'm a technical person, I like technical problems". If this is such a common thing, why do developers feel compelled to leave the technical domain and move into management? Sure you'll have more money and more control, but if you don't enjoy your work and take your problems out on your tream. Secondly, I've been asked in developer interviews, "Would you consider leading a team?" and I'm always tempted to cite the Peter Principle based on what I've seen. I am interested in furthering myself, but not in the way the company may want i.e "Vice President of department blah". To be honest, I've seen this more often in the corporate world than in small development houses and it's always put me off ever going back to a corporate environment. I just feel that this is becoming more and more the norm and it's impacting team morale and degrading the quality of the work. Question: Based on what I've said, Is it a smart move for a technical person to move into management?

  • How can I remove unmounted SD Card icons from my desktop?

    I have been using some audio utilities in Ubuntu 11.10 to tweak .mp3 files on my phone (Motorola Photon 4G). I connect via USB... both my phone and the internal SD card are mounted as two separate drives. The SD card has an unusual drive name with some odd characters. When I'm finished, I unmount my phone (or "safely remove drive"), but the SD card can't be unmounted. I've mounted and unmounted my phone on 4 occasions now, and there are now 4 SD card drive icons that I can't remove from the desktop. I tried using the gconf-editor/apps/nautilus/desktop trick to make drives invisible and it's not working. Right-clicking on the icons and selecting "unmount" produced the following error message; (I can't type the unusual drive name characters... replaced with xxx) Unable to unmount xxx umount: /media/xxx is not mounted (according to mtab) How can I remove the unwanted icons from the desktop and is there a method for avoiding this problem in the future?   • In C++ Good reasons for NOT using symmetrical memory management (i.e. new and delete)

    I try to learn C++ and programming in general. Currently I am studying open source with help of UML. Learning is my hobby and great one too. My understanding of memory allocation in C++ is that it should be symmetrical. A class is responsible for its resources. If memory is allocated using new it should be returned using delete in the same class. It is like in a library you, the class, are responsibility for the books you have borrowed and you return them then you are done. This, in my mind, makes sense. It makes memory management more manageable so to speak. So far so good. The problem is that this is not how it works in the real world. In Qt for instance, you create QtObjects with new and then hand over the ownership of the object to Qt. In other words you create QtObjects and Qt destroys them for you. Thus unsymmetrical memory management. Obviously the people behind Qt must have a good reason for doing this. It must be beneficial in some kind of way, My questions is: What is the problem with Bjarne Stroustrups idea about a symmetrical memory management contained within a class? What do you gain by splitting new and delete so you create an object and destroy it in different classes like you do in Qt. Is it common to split new and delete and why in such case, in other projects not involving Qt? Thanks for any help shedding light on this mystery!

    Hi!. ISSUE:- I am using CFbuilder and my coldfusion server is on a Remote Desktop Services (RDS). Everything is working fine except that I do not see the folder that I am currently working on under CFbuilder /Navigator or CFbuilder /Prject/Build Working Set/. Even if I try to add "Prject/Build Working Set/Select working set/New" its not working. I want to add a "Working Set" so that it can show on my CFbuilder/Navigator on the right side.   • Designing a frontend/backend architecture

    What are some good information sources on designing programs with a client/server architecture? This is for development of a desktop application, not a Web service. The only books I have found on client/server apps deal with the case of a thin client connecting to a remote database. Two good examples of what I mean are Mathematica and SuperCollider. I'm looking for platform- and language-agnostic discussion of the issues in developing a frontend/backend system. Especially useful topics would be allocation of responsibilities and options for message passing.

  • What is the best way to manage application screens in SWT?

    I'm creating a standalone SWT desktop application that has around 10 different screens (few wizards, help, forms, etc). Some elements on screen don't change at all (like header, background, etc) and there is a working area that changes depending on what is clicked, etc. What is the best way to manage application screens? Do I need to create all screen at startup and then show/hide them depending on what is clicked? Or do I need to create those screens dynamically? Also, I couldn't find any way to show/hide a Composite, do I need to dispose it and then create again? What is the best practice? I'm new to SWT developing outside of Eclipse so any help would be beneficial.
