• Implementing emailing (bulk & event based) features for my website.

  Hello. For my upcoming social networking website, I am looking for suggestions on the best way to implement emailing. Here are some of my requirements and constraints: Requirements: - Should be able to send emails based on events (new registrations, change password, etc.), promotions (advertisements based on user consent), bulk mails (newsletters), reminders (profile updates), etc. I hope I got the point through. - Should be able to process faults (incorrect email address, mail-box full, etc) - User initiated invites (inviting friends to connect) Constraints: - As of now I am looking at Godaddy for hosting. Subsequently I shall move to, may be Amazon Cloud. Godaddy seems to be excruciatingly conservative (not bad always) when it comes to the ability to send email. - My tests on Godaddy so far have been discouraging. There is limit to no. of emails I can send and sometimes if emails carries special characters it throws strange exceptions like there was a virus affected attachment (even though I hadn't attached a thing). The replies from Godaddy support have been equally funny. My intent is not to portray Godaddy as wrong but I am looking for a work-around that frees me from said constraints. I am looking for a mechanism / service that is either free of very cost effective. I wonder how other sites address this. Mine is a .Net / Windows based application.

• Generic/Text Printer on Windows 7 not prompting for file name

  Hope someone can shed some light on this. I am downloading reports from an AIX-based system by directing them to a TT printer which the terminal emulator (MultiView 2000) intercepts and directs to the default printer on the local system. This local printer is configured as a vanilla Generic/Text printer attached to a FILE port. When I print from AIX, the output is spooled down and the local printer prompts for a file name into which to save the file...but not under Windows 7. This has worked fine for many years, on both Win2K and WinXP. However, on Windows 7 the output gets spooled as a file into spool\PRINTERS (and looks as expected) but the print job then hangs with a status of "Error - Printing" and never prompts for a file name. I have to cancel the job. The Generic/Text printer works as expected with other applications. I have tried setting the printer to print directly rather than spooling but this only serves to hang the terminal session too. I've also tried to run the emulator in Windows 2000 Compatibility Mode and as Administrator in case it was something like that but with no luck. As you might expect, it does work fine in XP Mode (as long as I print to a printer defined therein and not the host's printer) but operationally this isn't going to be an option. Obviously this emulation software is a decade old (at least) and I could just cross/upgrade all the users (at a cost) but, before I do so, has anyone seen this sort of behaviour before and found some sort of fix? • Windows VPN always disconnects after < 3 minutes, only from my network

  First, this problem has existed for almost two years. Until serverfault was born, I pretty much gave up on solving it - but now, hope is reborn! I've set up a Windows 2003 server as a domain controller and VPN server at a remote office. I am able to connect to and work over the VPN from every windows client I've tried, including XP, Vista, and Windows 7 without issue, from at least five different networks (corporate and home, domain and non.) It works fine from all of them. However, whenever I connect from clients on my home network, the connection drops (silently) after 3 minutes or less. After a short while, it will eventually tell me the connection has dropped and attempt to redial/reconnect (if I've configured the client that way.) If I reconnect, the connection will re-establish and appear to work correctly, but again will silently drop, this time after a seemingly shorter time period. These are not intermittent drops. It happens every single time, in exactly the same way. The only variable is how long the connection survives. It doesn't matter what type of traffic I send. I can sit idle, send continuous pings, RDP, transfer files, all of that at once - it makes no difference. The result is always the same. Connected for a few minutes, then silent death. Since I doubt anyone has experienced this exact situation, what steps can I take to troubleshoot my evanescing VPN?

• Need Help Scoping a Server to use for study (MCITP Ent Admin + SharePoint 2010)

  i need to study for mcitp, but i also need to study for sharepoint 2010 i have a poweredge 1850 with two single-core CPUs + two 73G drives - it kills me on electricity, so don't want to use it, and it won't do VT, but it could be one of three boxes for a lab that's cheap, but will cost a lot on electricity i was thinking . . . OPTION #1 Opteron 4170 HE (50 watt chip), 6-core, only two-bills ($200), but the board's are $250, so that's an $800 box, then get another box to dual-boot Win7/Hyper-V on the cheap...? OPTION #2 Used Quad - but how many VM's that are really banging away could it run at same time? (Server 2008r2, SQL 2008r2, Search Server) OPTION #3 Study from books and just get one box that can run two VM's at same time, even if slowly. the last time i had and used a home lab was five years ago when i had a DC, SQL, Exchange and business app box, that's where i got my server skills was just banging on it for four years, but didn't read any books, so now i have to get certified and know the material, and just am not sure how much attention i should pay to the box i use versus the studying time and reading. sorry it's a subjective question, and am obviously open to all sorts of abuse here, but hope you can tell me also how many VM's i can run at the same time given what they'll be doing (SQL and SharePoint FAST search server are resource hungry) thanks!

• How can I remedy the always-on-top window problem?

  Sorry for the vague title but this one is hard to explain so bear with me please. I'm using Windows Vista at work for web development and sometimes when I Click or Alt-Tab to background window, the window will get focus but it will not be brought to the front. In order to bring the window to the front, I have to click on the applications border (when the resize cursor appears) and the window will then jump to the front. I've had this problem for about a year now and it happens at least a dozen times a day, but it doesn't do this all the time - seems random. I hope I have explained the issue fully (and you've understood it) and would appreciate any constructive answers or comments to solve this problem. Example: If I Alt-Tab from Google Chrome to Notepad and this problem randomly occurs, Google Chrome will remain in front of Notepad, however, I will be able to type text into Notepad while the window is behind Google Chrome. Clicking on Notepad's content area will not bring it to the front but clicking it's window border will. Video Exampe http://vimeo.com/19388998 In this video, I clicked from Google Chome to UltraEdit and chrome stayed in font, but as you can see, I can still type in UltraEdit. I'm starting to believe that this could be a bug in Google Chrome so I'll continue to watch if this between other applications.

  i have a server with ESX5, have a switch with about 20 vlans, this is how setup the trunk port interface GigabitEthernet0/1/1 description ToOper port link-type trunk undo port trunk allow-pass vlan 1 port trunk allow-pass vlan 2 to 14 stp disable ntdp enable ndp enable bpdu enable then, i created a standar switch(sw1) using the vSphere Client, the VLAN ID is set to All (4095), i also created a VM with Debian 6, with a NIC connected to sw1, now, i want to configure this NIC for a selected group of vlans auto vlan10 iface vlan10 inet static address 11.10.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.224 mtu 1500 vlan_raw_device eth0 auto vlan14 iface vlan14 inet static address 11.10.1.65 netmask 255.255.255.248 mtu 1500 vlan_raw_device eth0 so, when i restart the network using /etc/init.d/networking restart, i got this error Reconfiguring network interfaces...SIOCSIFADDR: No such device vlan14: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device vlan14: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device SIOCSIFMTU: No such device vlan14: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device Failed to bring up vlan14. done. this is just part of the error, so, my questions is: is this possible?, i mean, what i'm trying to achieve using ESX Virtual Machines, VLANS, etc is this a Debian problem? can be solved? i've read about a file named z25_persistent-net.rules in Debian but it doesn't exist in my installation. in the In the vSphere Networking for ESX5 guide, you can read: If you enter 0 or leave the option blank, the port group can see only untagged (non-VLAN) traffic. If you enter 4095, the port group can see traffic on any VLAN while leaving the VLAN tags intact. So, in theory, it should work, right? Hope you can help me up with this one Thanks

• running a command as root with /bin/su and without gives different results

  Some background: I have a machine with SLES 11 installed. I am running a bash script that one of its lines is /bin/su $USER -c SOME_CMD. Unfortunately, the SOME_CMD that comes after the -c keeps failing, no matter if USER=root or any different user. However, if /bin/su $USER -c part is omitted then everything runs smoothly. Moreover, I have run the script on RHEL5 and it worked fine. Anyway, my question is why does it happen? If it is a permissions problems then why when I run this as root with /bin/su and without I get different results? P.S. apologize if somebody else has asked it before, I have done many googling and got nothing that satisfies. Thanks in advance, n00bInCpp EDIT Okay, I figured it out, I hope so. Instead of running /bin/su I used /user/bin/sudo -u $MY_USER_1 MY_ENV_VAR="/home/user1" SOME_CMD. I don't understand why I have to use sudo, though. I am used to run a command as a different user using su and not worrying about permissions problems, but I guess it doesn't work like that on SLES 11/SuSE.   I have been looking for a solution to virtualize my desktop application as a SaaS. After picking Citrix XenApp as the best solution for my case and trying for ever to get it to work (with some more experienced people) I can't help but to conclude that Citrix has too much problems for my case. Every time I fix one thing some other thing pops up. As I can't imagine Citrix XenApp is the only way to deliver my application to my clients, I'd like to ask you experienced guys if you think there is an other way to deliver it whilst meeting my requirements. I've got no money issues - time on the other hand... My requirements: My application must run on a windows server; The application should be virtualized with the application window only (no desktop); Content Redirection (my application is the only one virtualized, so PDF, DOC(X) etc. is on the users' system); Easy user management; SSO;* Cross platform (Windows, Linux, Mac OSX).* I truly hope I don't annoy you with another of the same question. I've tried to find the same question here and - obviously - didn't found it. *) these I can live without, however very much appreciated

• Recommended programming language for linux server management and web ui integration.

  I am interested in making an in house web ui to ease some of the management tasks I face with administrating many servers; think Canonical's Landscape. This means doing things like, applying package updates simultaneously across servers, perhaps installing a custom .deb (I use ubuntu/debian.) Reviewing server logs, executing custom scripts, viewing status information for all my servers. I hope to be able to reuse existing command line tools instead of rewriting the exact same operations in a different language myself. I really want to develop something that allows me to continue managing on the ssh level but offers the power of a web interface for easily applying the same infrastructure wide changes. They should not be mutually exclusive. What are some recommended programming languages to use for doing this kind of development and tying it into a web ui? Why do you recommend the language(s) you do? I am not an experienced programmer, but view this as an opportunity to scratch some of my own itches as well as become a better programmer. I do not care specifically if one language is harder than another, but am more interested in picking the best tools for the job from the beginning. Feel free to recommend any existing projects except Landscape (not free,) Ebox (not entirely free, and more than I am looking for,) and webmin (I don't like it, feels clunky and does not integrate well with the "debian way" of maintaining a server, imo.) • Strange 400 error with IIS 7.5 and a webservice?

  Ok, this is a longshot. I have been pondering this for hours. I have no clue how to solve this. But maybe someone here can recognize the problem and point me to right direction. I have an IIS 7.5 server and a MSSQL database on a different server. On the IIS server there is a webservice that communicates with the MSSQL server. The problem is that when there is data that the MSSQL server needs to send back to the webservice and the webservice delivers that back to the webbrowser (JSON) i get a 400 error. Looking through the logs for the IIS there is just a 400....nothing more. When i put in a call to the service in my browsers URL field i get this: "The server encountered an error processing the request. Please see the service help page for constructing valid requests to the service." There is NOTHING wrong with how i call the webservice. It has worked before on a different server (a dev server). Do someone have a clue on what this can be about? 400 means malformed URL...it isn´t. And why is that when there are no data to return to the user...everything works. But when there is data fetched from the MSSQL DB...the 400 error shows up. Hope someone have some tips how to solve it. Thanx in advance.

My question at stackoverflow had two small images showing the example rendering of text. As a new user at superuser, I am not being allowed to include them here, nor I am allowed to post more than one hyperlink. And, I don't have enough reputation on SO to migrate that question. Please look at the stackoverflow question for the images. Sorry about the inconvenience.] I sometimes edit text in telugu language. However, when I open the file (UTF-8 encoded) in GNU emacs (version 23.1.50.1 on Ubuntu Jaunty) the text rendering is incorrect. The same text file opened in gedit is rendered correctly. • port forwarding/network settings preventing from game hosting

  I asked where to post this question on stackoverflow meta and they directed me here. Im on wireless connection and I want to host games in StarCraft: Brood War and i've been looking everywhere on how to accomplish that. My internet is amazingly fast so its not an internet problem (and when i play other peoples games dont experience lag) I found out that i need to have a static IP but I have already checked that i do (i downloaded a program to make my id static and it already was; The program asked for which router I used So i think it checked the router settings already) I found out that i need to allow Sc access through the firewall which i already did (i have zone-alarm but I allowed it everything possible except receiving emails lol) I have recently noticed that few people actually can join my games but most of them cannot. I dont know whats going on here. I really want to be able to host games overall how do I go about checking what is wrong with the network. Update: Alright I figured out what i did wrong in the first part I did not actually set up forwarding on the router -.- I have tried to fix my mistake. I went to forwarding options in my router (as this guide for my specific router suggests) but when i click ok I get a message incorrect ip address. 192.168.1.1 is my routers address. The default address that appears there is 192.168.1 (blank) I have set it to my computers current Ip4 adress which 192.168.1.23 I hope this works If so i will post it as an answer and mark it.

  Hello! After reviewing some thread about server monitoring software I end up with a simple question: Which of the server monitoring tools should I use for automatic detection of "abnormal" situations with recommendations on how to fix them? I look for software that checks the system performance after installation and calculate some average load values (memory, CPU, etc). And when something happens (CPU load is increased to 20%) then it tries to detect a reason for this. If it is apache, it should check for access logs. If mysql, it should check mysql logs and tell me what happens. It this is because some user decodes a lot of images, I'd like to know which command is executed, when and user name. The same for disk usage, memory, number of processes, threads and so on. Ideally, this software should periodically checks the system and report problems: errors in PHP error log, outdated packages, security vulnerabilities. In other word I'm looking a software that will keep my simple Debian/Apache/PHP/MySQL server without forcing me to monitor the charts every day. I hope that such program exists. Thanks, Alex

  I have two openvpn clients on the 10.0.1.0 (client1) and 192.168.0.0 (client2) subnets with the server's openvpn connection having the ip 192.168.150.1 The server has ip forwarding enabled. I learned to need an active minidisplay port to vga or minidisplay port to dvi cable. Here's my problem. I want to buy minidisplay port to dvi but my country doesn't have it but I can find display port to active dvi cable. I have a minidisplay port to display port cable. If I buy Sapphire ACTIVE DP TO SL-DVI CABLE will my third monitor work? I mean I will plug mini display port to display port cable first and after I will plug active dp to dvi cable. Will it work? • which vista services can be disabled with impunity?

  I use Vista on a HP pavilion DV2 laptop. When I look through all the services my laptop starts, it really seems there's way too much of it. I multi boot with XP and 7. Both startup in 40 seconds. Vista takes four minutes. Is there some software that can determine which services I don't need? On 7, there's no propietary HP stuff at all, yet it seems to run fine. Because all these service, there's a LOT of them and some just sit there doing nothing, monitoring for updates I don't really need or want or need to know about the second they're available. my laptop is the only computer i use at home, there's no home network, aside from the modem-router, which is cabled, not wifi. Take for instance Parental controls, and stuff for people with bad eyesight, Tablet PC. I really never use any of that stuff. Hope this question is specific enough. • Regarding partitions for dual-booting Ubuntu with pre-existing Windows 7

  I have zero actual experience with configuring disk partitions and the stuff I have read for the past few hours have been confusing me a bit, so please bear with me. First of all, I'd like to explain what I'm setting to achieve: Windows 7 with: C:\ Windows 7 (pre-existing installation) D:\ Data (Already exists and has files already) Ubuntu 11 - Does not exist yet, but I already have a LiveCD in hand. \root directory for Ubuntu \home on its own partition I plan \swap on its own partition with around 8GB Here is the current situation: I have a single 500 GB hard-disk with Windows 7 x64 installed, and the current partition schemes is as follows: System Reserved: 100 MB (Primary, Active) C: 100 GB - Where Windows 7 is installed (Primary) D: 365 GB - Where my files are located, LOTS of free space (Primary) Now, I would like to shrink my D: drive and create around 40 GB of unallocated disk space for the Ubuntu installation, but here what's confusing me a bit: I'm thinking I would create an extended partition and subdivide it into 3 logical partitions for the Ubuntu setup I had in mind. (If you think my setup is a bad idea, please let me know & why. I also hope you can suggest a better one...) I am aware that I can only have up to 4 primary partitions, or 3 primary partitions with 1 extended parition max. Now, does the System Recovery portion count as one primary partition? I'm really new to these things and it is totally unclear to me. In shrinking my D: drive using Windows 7's Disk Management tool, I would get an unallocated free space which I don't know how to make an extended partition from. It seems like I can only create a primary partition from it, not an extended one. How do I go about it? (I'd also like to note, if it is of any importance, that I am trying to avoid using the option to install Ubuntu alongside Windows, and much rather prefer using the custom install where I can specify which drives I wish to use and stuff. Somehow I feel its safer that way.)

• CIFS Mounting Permissions

  I have an issue that I;m going round in circles with, I hope you can help. The Set up: Server 1 (CIFS Client) - CentOS 6.3 AD integrated uing Samba/Winbind & idmap_ad Server 2 (CIFS Server) - CentOS 6.3 AD integrated uing Samba/Winbind & idmap_ad All users (apart from root) are AD authenticated and this, including groups, etc works happily. What's working: I have created a share on Server 2: [share2] path = /srv/samba/share2 writeable = yes Permissions on the share: drwxrwx---. 2 root domain users 4096 Oct 12 09:21 share2 I can log into a Windows machine as user5 (member of domain users) and everything works as it should, for example: If I create a file it shows the correct permissions and attributes on both the MS and the Linux sides. Where I Fall Down: I mount the share on Server 1 using: # mount //server2/share2 /mnt/share2/ -o username=cifsmount,password=blah,domain=blah Or using fstab: //server2/share2 /mnt/share2 cifs credentials=/blah/.creds 0 0 This mounts fine, but.... If I log su, or log onto server 1 as a normal user (say user5) and try to create a file I get: #touch test touch test touch: cannot touch `test': Permission denied Then if I check the folder the file was created but as the cifsmount user: -rw-r--r--. 1 cifsmount domain users 0 Oct 12 09:21 test I can rename, delete, move or copy stuff around as user5, I just can't create anything, what am I doing wrong? I'm guessing it's something to do with the mount action as when I log onto server2 as user5 and access the folder locally it all works as it should. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

• configure a Macbook Pro to use external monitor at boot (Debian Linux)

  In the spirit of reuse, I've installed Debian (version 6.0.5 "squeeze") on my wife’s old Macbook Pro (circa 2009 or so), to repurpose it for various tasks. The catch is the display is flaky. It will last a random amount of time, between 2 minutes and 2 hours, before freezing and graying out. This is a known issue with that generation of MBP. Fortunately it’s no problem for me, as I plan to use it with an external monitor anyway. Which brings us to the problem: How do I configure this thing to output to the external display by default, and hopefully disable the built-in LCD? The ideal solution would be to modify a setting in the EFI (BIOS), but I’m not holding out much hope for that. Next best thing would be a kernel option I can pass to the NVIDIA driver. What won’t work is a solution that doesn’t give me a display until X starts. I need to have console access, especially given that the built-in LCD is dying, and any day now might give out completely. So far I haven’t been able to find anything online. lspci says I’ve got an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M Help is much appreciated! • Does using a hexacore CPU make sense?

  I'm currently planning to upgrade my computer system and I want to exchange CPU, board and RAM. I already had a look at some hexacore-CPUs from AMD and would like to know if it makes any sense to use such a CPU with six cores. Is there any software which really uses six cores? Especially in gaming? I'm using this PC mostly for gaming and from time to time for developing. I know that on the dual-core system (2 x 3GHz) I currently use, Visual Studio creates two instances of the compiler, one for each core. Would there be six instances of the compiler on a hexacore system for super fast compiling? Is there any software that uses six cores? Would running two applications cause the usage of more CPUs? (For example two CPUs for a game you're playing while two other CPUs are used for compiling at the same time) I hope someone can point out the benefits of a hexacore system. The OS would be Windows 7 64 Bit and I use the PC for gaming most of the time. (Crysis 2, CoD, stuff like that)

• Notebook display problem (multiplication)

  Hi, I'm having some troubles with the display of a LG E500 notebook. The thing is that without any known reason the display starts to show the screen divided in eigth parts and each part show the display image as if I had a matrix of eigth displays :) I thought it could be some kind of refresh rate problem or driver related, but it is happening at boot-up as well and the BIOS. I got the computer completely unassambled yesterday and I check all the wires and connectors looking for something broken or unconected, but without luck... You can see a picture here of the problem (sorry for the low quality, but I think it illustrate the problem. EDIT 1: I uploaded a new pictrue, here you cans ee the problem better :) There are three horizontal lines that you can see just between the windows. You can see the grey line at the first moment you turn on the computer and the after the duplicated screens show up just like if they where arranged over a grid (over the horizontal lines...) I hope it makes any sense. Do you know what could be happening? or can you tell me what would you do? Thank you very much for your help.

• Is It Possible To Self-Teach PHP, Wordpress, CentOS (Linux), Apache, Nginx etc?

  consider me a total noob, who uses a Windows PC and has never touched Linux. But I want to administer, manage and take responsibility of my server, at least at some point, if not now. But since I am a full-time blogger I am unable to find time to study at an institute. So, here is my question — - Is It Possible To Self-Teach HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, Wordpress, CentOS (or for that matter any Linux distro), Apache, Nginx, and Varnish? Yes, beginning with HTML, absolutely all of them. I might seem overly ambitious and foolish, but I just want to do it. Aren't there any self-taught server admins? (1) Please help me out with the names of good books, links and whatever you can. (2) How long would it take me to get there (approximately)? 3 years? 5 years? (I have good touch with HTML & Wordpress.) This is a great community, I hope at least some of you will shoot some suggestions at me.

• Understanding Authorized Access to your Google Account

  I'm having trouble understanding what I'm am granting to sites when they have "Authorized Access to my Google Account." This is how I see what has authorized access: Log into gmail. Click on the link that is my name in the upper-right corner, and from the drop-down select Account. From the list of links to the left, select Security. Click on Edit next to Authorized applications and sites. Authenticate again. At the top of the page, I see a set of sites that have authorized access to my account in various ways. I'm having trouble finding out information about what is being told to me here. There's no "help" link anywhere on the page and my Google searches are coming up unproductive. From the looks of what I see there, Google has access to my Google calendar. I feel comfortable about that, I think. But other sites have authorization to "Sign in using your Google account". My question is, what exactly does that authorization mean? What do the sites that have authorization to "Sign in using my Google account" have the power to do? I hope that this simply means that they authorize using the same criterion that gmail does. I assume that this doesn't grant them the ability to access my email. Can someone please calm my paranoia by describing (or simply pointing me to a site that describes) what these terms mean exactly? Also, if you have any thoughts about the safety of this feature, please share. Thanks!

• I think my laptop just died

  I have a Dell 1330M that as of about 15 minutes ago will no longer POST. What happened was I was working, stepped away for a moment, and when I came back it was turned off. I thought that was odd, but turned it on and things seemed fine. About 1/2 hour later it crashed and restarted, but came up fine again. It did this once more. At this point I was starting to get worried, but I hadn't had any problems with the laptop before and every crash was after doing some work in a virtual machine that I don't often use, so I at put the blame there. It didn't feel like it was overheating anywhere and there's no ozone smell of overheated electronics. Then it crashed a final time and now when I turn it on all I see is a bright screen with a bunch of vertical lines (noise). I've tried removing the memory sticks one at a time, but I get the same result with either memory stick in either slot. With no memory at all it stops earlier in the POST process and the screen is completely blank (black, no backlight). As I type this, I hear a double beep from the system about once every 10 minutes. I'm pretty sure the hard drive is fine because it fails during post, before anything off the drive is needed. The power supply seems good because the screen is nice and bright. It's not the RAM because swapping that around made no difference. The leaves motherboard (which I doubt and can replace) and CPU (which just might be changable). Any ideas? Is there any hope for this laptop? I'm rather fond of it and I'd have a hard time replacing it with anything near as nice.
