• Lot of Multicast traffic on LAN

  Recently the whole network at work is being hit by multicast traffic originating on the LAN itself. I did some investigating and the service which seems to be responsible is ws-discovery. I have attached a screenshot of wireshark capturing the traffic. I have tried shutting down the source machine from which it was originating, but the multicast traffic still seems to be present in the network. My network topology 2 subnets - 10.10.10.0/24 and 10.20.10.0/24. Gateway is a debian system. We have 3 switches for 3 floors. They are all unmanaged Dlink 24-port switches. Multicast blocking at switch level is out of the question. Any solutions? :(

• Installing software after .wim image

  I have been looking all day into how to install software to a .wim image. I have a .wim image of a laptop that will be deplyed to 20 more. The image is pretty much good to go except I need to add a couple more drivers and a couple more applications. Is there a way to do this in the answer file? Do I have to deploy the image, install the drivers/application, sysprep, and recapture the image? Any information relating to this will be greatly appreciated. Leon ps I have only been using answer files and imagex. Would like to stick with this for the time being. I plan on using WDT and WDS when I have some time to learn about it.

• Quick Books accounting software

  Using a square 17" lcd monitor, and setting the Monitor to display text in larger font than default, some of the pages in QB have the bottom 2 or 3 lines chopped off. QB support has no ideas for a different/larger monitor that would solve the problem for those of us with 50 something eyes. Seems like everyone is going to the widescreen format, but when we tried one on the QB stuff, it spreads out the page to the point that it is deformed...too wide. Does anybody make a new square screen monitor in 19, 20, or bigger that would solve this issue. we can't be the only ones experiencing this.

• Microsoft Word 2010 Header and Footer assistance

  I am using Microsoft Word 2010 to format a book. I need different headers for different parts of the book. I have put them in different sections but my problem is when I click on Header to change or delete certain headers it changes the pages around in my document. For instance when I am looking at the page regularly the writing and section for page 20 is different then the writing and section when I am looking at it with the header and footer open. This is very frustrating because I can not properly change the headers. I hope this makes sense and somebody can explain what is going on and how to resolve this!

  I need to provide the recommended amount of RAM and disc space (divided in two partitions) so the customer can create an appropriate virtual machine to run Oracle. All I could find in the documentation was a brief listing with minimum RAM and typical/advanced install types. The virtual machine will run latest Oracle Standard Edition One (11g release 2 so far) under Windows Server 2008 x64 and will host a reasonably low traffic web application. How much RAM and disc must I ask for in order to be safe? (Feel free to ask for further details if I've omitted something relevant.) Update: Rough estimations: Database size: 10 MB after installation Growth rate: +3MB per day on average Size of database 'active' data: (not sure of what this means, there's not actual archive so I guess all data is current) Amount of data written per second in peak hours: a few KB Number of client sessions: 3 or 4 at most Frequency and response size of most heavy requests: some reports make heavy table JOINS that need up to 20 seconds to complete but they won't return more than a few thousand rows with plain text. The app also handles BLOBs (typical size from 50KB to 200KB)

• Jenkins shows same information for all projects

  I've been using Jenkins for the last month or so and what started out as a small issue has gotten worse and worse. I have 10 projects in Jenkins, all polling from different Git repos and building to different environments but they all show the same details on the dashboard. I have exchange server 2010 configured and working without any errors the problem is in cisco router configuration when exchange server sends emails out the receives WAN IP not the public ip. I have configured RDNS lookups with our MX record IP addesses that match the FQDN but all our emails are rejected because it does not match with the public ip. Receiving mails problem is not an problem all mails are coming through. i am sure i am missing something on the router configuration that does not sends the public ip, can any one help me to solve this issue. • collectd:Monitoring server not showing clients

  I have setup a monitoring server with the following setup. <Plugin network> Listen "0.0.0.0" "25826" </Plugin> Now my clients are sending data to the monitoring server(verified through tcpdump). Even the collection folder shows that the data is being dumped /var/lib/collectd/rrd [ec2-user at x rrd]$ ll total 4 drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 4096 Nov 20 17:53 x-web-1.y.com [ec2-user at x rrd]$ I have also verified with find . -mmin 1 to see if its being constantly updated. • CodeIgniter's Scaffolding not working

  Hi, I keep getting a 404 Page Not Found whenever I try to access CodeIgniter's Scaffolding page in my browser, like so: localhost/codeignitor/index.php/blog/scaffolding/mysecretword I can access localhost/codeignitor/index.php/blog just fine. I followed CodeIgnitor's instructions in their "Create a blog in 20 minutes" by storing my database settings in the database.php file; and automatically connecting to the database by inserting "database" in the core array of the autoload.php; and I've added both parent::Controller(); and $this-load-scaffolding('myTableName') to blog's constructor. It still gives me this 404. Any suggestions?

• How to allow program updates without prompting UAC?

  We have about 15-20 users who have this software installed. We have UAC enabled through GPO as you should, which means the software prompts for admin approval if a standard user trys to install it. Thats fine, they can call the help desk to have the software installed. My problem is, our help desk is being bombarded every day because users can't update the software and there are updates almost every day which is prompting UAC. Using procmon.exe to find out where it was trying to write to, I then created a GPO to allow file permission access to the program files folder for this particular software, including the program data folder, but it still prompts for admin approval. It seems as though that the software is using msiexec.exe to run a .msp patch file. The only "ACCESS DENIED"s I can still see in procmon is things like this: What can I possibly do to stop this software from prompting UAC with admin password credentials aside from disabling UAC?

• CPU spikes on small site- possibly apache or php config related

  Hello, I hope you can help me. I have a site that I'm moving to a new datacenter. The server is pretty much vanilla, no control panel, and also no optimizations. When I hit a page, the site takes an extremely long time to load, despite it being relatively light weight. I ran top to see what was happening, and the cpu jumps to 75%, and drops back down to about 20% while the rest of the page is loading. Someone suggested that I ran lsof -p on the offending processes, but I'm not sure what I'm looking at. I ran through my httpd.conf file and commented out a bunch of loaded modules that didn't seem necessary, but that didn't help either. Anyone have any ideas? • Is there a way to modify the default size of a new side note in OneNote 2010?

  I am a fan of OneNote, but there is one aspect of it that makes it less useful than it could be. When I make a new side note (i.e. by clicking the OneNote icon in the system tray or pressing WindowsKey + N), the size of the window of the resulting note that opens is far too large. It probably takes up 20% of my reasonably high-res screen by default. I have to click and drag to resize it, and that's a waste of my time. So, I have a two part question: Is there a way of modifying some settings somewhere (perhaps in the registry?) so that the default window size of a new side note is smaller than the default? I would prefer something more in line with the size of a new "sticky" note in OS X. If not, does anyone know of a fast way to shrink the size of a window using the keyboard? I'd appreciate any advice that anyone can give. Thanks.

  In general, and understanding the answer may vary by manufacturer and model (and driver, and...), in consumer-grade workstations with integrated NICs, does the NIC rely on the CPU for a lot of help (as is typically the case with a USB controller, for instance), or is it fairly intelligent and capable on its own (like, say, the typical Firewire controller)? Or is the question too general to answer? (If it matters, you can assume Linux.) Background: I'm looking at connecting a device (digital television capture) that will be delivering ~20-50 Mbit/sec of data to a somewhat under-powered workstation. I can get a USB 2 High-speed device, or a network-attached device, and am interested in avoiding impacting the CPU where possible. Obviously, if it's a 100Mbit NIC, that's roughly half its theoretical inbound bandwidth, whereas it's only roughly a tenth of the 480 Mbit/second the USB 2 "High Speed" interface. But if the latter requires a lot of CPU support and the former doesn't...

• Bring OS X Error Message window to the front

  In OS X, when an application crashes, a window with an error report will appear. That window is by default unreachable by Command+Tab nor does it appear in the Dock. Of course, if by error or on purpose one clicks another window, the error report will go to the background and hide behind the other windows. This is really annoying, because in order to see it, I will have to use Exposé and scan through 20+ Windows in order to find it. (Not to say, that I don’t like Exposé anymore since Snow Leopard made the window sizes all confusingly equal.) Any ideas on how to make the error reports Command+Tabbable?

• Puppet, Nagios, Munin on cPanel based hosts

  I've been managing 20-30~ cPanel based hosts over the past year with Puppet, Nagios and Munin for general monitoring / trending however a lot of the methods I've had to use to deploy / manage things such as configurations a pain. For those of you who aren't familiar with cPanel - it adds a few things to yum exclude such as perl*, ruby* and so forth. This causes issues with me being able to bootstrap monitoring on a new server via Puppet (well via the Package type) due to a bunch of conflicts with installing via Yum. Now I could create a custom RPM for everything and remove certain dependencies from the spec file however I would like to avoid this if possible. Does anyone have any proposed functional ways to manage this sort of environment? Currently I install Puppet, Facter and Munin via RPM's and force install using --nodeps and such (since they're installed, just no the ones Yum wants). Nagios I installed manually from source at this time (likely will create RPM's however I want to tackle this general issue first).

• Router's ssid changes from infrastructure to ad-hoc

  For a period of time the router's ssid is shown (on various computers) as a normal infrastructure network - computers connect fine and everything works however after a few minutes / hours all computers see the same ssid as an ad-hoc network (not infrastructure). At this point a computer that was already connected continues to work - a computer that isn't cannot connect. Rebooting the router temporarily restores the visibility of the correct infrastructure ssid. Is something interfering? • Using optimization to assign by preference

  I have 100 objects ("candies") that I need to distribute between five people so that each has an equal number of candies (in this case, 20 candies per person). However, each person has also expressed their preferences of candy to me in a chart, similar to below. Top-favored candies receive 10 points, least-favored candies receive -10 points, and neutral-favored candies receive 0.5 points. I need to sort the items out so that: Each person receives the same number of candies Each person's total "satisfaction" (points) is maximized My output is a list of each person's assigned items I'm familiar with Excel's in-house Monte Carlo simulation tools (Solver, F9 diceroll, etc) and would like to stick to those tools. While I know how to set up the chart, and how to use the column summation to input into Solver, I don't know how to get it to give me the desired output. Furthermore, how do I adjust the solver so it takes into account individual preferences rather than empirical ones? To wit: how do I begin setting up this model?

Application Pool timeout configuration was set to 20 minutes. A new worker process will be started when needed." This makes sense and jibes with out timeout settings, but 30 seconds later we see: "A process serving application pool 'xxxx' terminated unexpectedly. The process id was '6896'. The process exit code was '0xc0000005'." I found an older KB article that explains a condition where this might happend on IIS6 due to permission issues, but am curious what might cause this on IIS7.5, especially since we are not seeing it regularly.
