  • Thoughts on streamlining multiple .Net apps

    We have a series of ASP.Net applications that have been written over the course of 8 years. Mostly in the first 3-4 years. They have been running quite well with little maintenance, but new functionality is being requested and we are running into IDE and platform issues. The apps were written in .Net 1.x and 2.x and run in separate spaces but are presented as a single suite of applications which use a common navigation toolbar (implemented as a user control). Every time we want to add something to a menu in the nav we have to modify it in all the apps which is a pain. Also, the various versions of Crystal reports and that we used tables to organize the visual elements and we end up with a mess, especially with all the multi-platform .Net versions running. We need to streamline the suite of apps and make it easier to add on new apps without a hassle. We also need to bring all these apps under one .Net platform and IDE. In addition, there is a WordPress blog styled to match the style of the application suite "integrated" into the UI and a link to a MediaWiki Wiki application as well. My current thinking is to use an open source content management system (CMS) like Joomla (PHP based unfortunately, but it works well) as the user interface framework for style templating and menu management. Joomla's article management would allow us to migrate the Wiki content into articles which could be published without interfering with the .Net apps. Then essentially use an IFrame within an "article" to "host" the .Net application, then... Upgrade the .Net apps to VS2010, strip out all the common header/footer controls and migrate the styles to use the style sheets used in the CMS. As I write this, I certainly realize this is a lot of work and there are optimization issues which this may cause as well as using IFrames seems a bit like cheating and I've read about issues with IFrames. I know that we could use .Net application styling, but it seems like a lot more work (not sure really). Also, the use of a CMS to handle the blog and wiki also seems appealing, unless there is a .Net CMS out there that can handle all of these requirements. Given this information, I am looking to know if I am totally going in the wrong direction? We tried to use open source and integrate it over time, but not this has become hard to maintain. Am I not aware of some technology out there that will meet our requirements? Did we do this right and should we just focus on getting the .Net streamlined? I understand that no matter what we do, it's going to be a lot of work. The communities considerable experience would be helpful. Thanks!! PS - A complete rewrite is not an option.

  • XCode CoreData files not found/opening

    Hello, I am using the Xcode 3.1.4 that means SDK 3.1.2 The problem is that I cannot open .xcdatamodel (Core Data) file and I don't even get the Data Model option in Design Menu bar. When ever I double click and try to open the file, XCode gives me an error saying that it cannot find the file at (my project's path).Perhaps it was moved or deleted? , but the file exists at the same path. Please help me out as I haven't upgraded my system to Snow Leopard so cant use SDK 3.2 Regards jAmi

  • find command in Linux

    My goal is to find all pdf files on a remote machine, so I resort to the useless command find. So I type find . *.pdf or find ~ .pdf or find ~ ".pdf" and I get nothing. I do the same on my machine and I get nothing. I do a regular search from the menu on my machine and I find quite a few pdf files. Would somebody please tell me what am I doing wrong?

  • How to stop debugging (or detach process) without stopping the process?

    I often use VS 2008 to debug a .NET C# component of an application. Sometimes, I want to quit debugging and continue running the application. Stop Debugging kills the process I was debugging. How can I achieve my aim? This is not a web app, it's a local process that runs managed and unmanaged code. I don't see any "Detach" or "Detach All" option in the Debug menu (is it enabled in some option?).

  • Java IDE - find all INDIRECT usages/references of a function or class?

    In Netbeans or in Eclipse, you can use "Find Usages" or "References" from the right click context menu. If a() calls b(), using the functionality from b() will show you a(). However, what I want is to be able to see some kind of tree or have an option to see all usages of a given/class or method, such that if z() calls a() that using the functionality will show both z() and a(). Any IDE plugins or external tools that can do this?

    I lack understanding of some basic MVC concepts, despite all my searching. I created an MVC project in Visual Studio, which contains the partial view _LogOnPartial.shtml. I just want to access information within the view pertaining to the user, to put in a user dropdown menu. When I try to put this at the top of the partial view cshtml page I get the above error: @model MyProject_MVC.Models.UserRepository When I try this I also get an error: @Html.Partial("_LogOnPartial", MyProject_MVC.Models.UserRepository) 'MyProject_MVC.Models.UserRepository' is a 'type', which is not valid in the given context

  • easy, straightforward way to package a python program for debian?

    i'm having trouble navigating the maze of distribution tools for python and debian; cdbs, debhelper, python-support, python-central, blah blah blah .. my application is a fairly straightforward one - a single python package (directory containing modules and a __init__.py), a script for running the program (script.py) and some icons and menu items (.desktop files). is there a simple straightforward way to make a .deb file out of these, or should i brave the nonsensical tools listed above?

  • Why would my Silverlight 4 Out-of-Browser application just display white?

    My Silverlight application works fine when running in a browser. But when I install it as an out-of-browser application, the Window frame comes up with an appropriate icon and title, but the content of the window is just white. It is in the start menu but when I close it and open again, it is still blank. I reproduced this on Windows 7 and Windows XP. By default it seems to use the operating system default browser, but I would prefer to use IE when debugging ASP.net apps. (I am testing this with ASP.net MVC 2)

    How can I toggle the subnav for each item, and if one is open, hide the open one to show the current one? If there are none shown, just toggle. If you click one and show subnav then and click another hide previous and show current.   • how do I make my submenu position dynamic based on the distance to the edge of the window?

    I'm trying to write a jQuery script that will find the distance to the right edge of the browser window from my css class element and then position the child submenu dropdowns to the right or left depending on the available space to the right. Also it needs to revert to the default settings on hoverout. I also know that it needs to revert back to default after hover out so it can recalculate the distance from other positions within the menu structure and still have those second level submenus with enough room to still display on the right of the first level. here is css for the elements in question. #dnnMenu .subLevel{ display: none; position: absolute; margin: 0; z-index: 1210; background: #639ec8; text-transform: none;} #dnnMenu .subLevelRight{ position: absolute; display: none; left: 270px; top: 0px;} The site's not live yet and I tried to create a jsfiddle but it doesn't look right. You select a variable on variable called myVar, and it highlights all with the same name but with a grayer color and gray background. I just can't read it and can't set it.
