  • Best Work Queue service for distributed clusters

    Hi there. I require a simple work queue type system for asynchronous task management. I have looked at both beanstalkd and gearman. However, both these seem to assume that the client and the queue server are on the same network, and therefore that there will always be a reliable network between them. I need one that can support the client and server being in different places in the world, and be able to manage temporary loss of network connection between clusters. Ideally, this would work in such a way where I post a job to a local proxy that attempts to send it to the main queue server. If there is no network connection, it would try again later, however it would not lose the job or delay the client. Any recommendations?

  • Rails best practice on conditional parameters in a controller action

    I have a controller create action looks for one or more parameters in the following ruleset. Let's say we have two parameters, foo and bar. The rules are the following: 1) if foo doesn't exist in the parameter list, bar must. 2) if bar doesn't exist in the parameter list, foo must. 3) they can both co-exist. they can't both be omitted (that's redundant with my rules above :) ) Can anyone show an example in Rails on how this is handled in the controller? Should I use a before_filter? Would appreciate some guidance as this isn't something that ActiveRecord validates.. so I'd need to build an error message to the user directly from controller logic, not model logic. For bonus points, I output the error in XML, so if you can show how that's done, that'd be great. Hypothetically let's call the resource "Lorem", so it is created via http://foo/lorem.xml and we have lorem_controller.rb.

  • What is the best way to get support from microsoft developers [closed]

    I have a problem at my production web, that I am not able to solve. I am not able to reproduce the problem in stage or development. It only appears when the website is under heavy load. I think it is solvable if somebody who has a very good understanding of the internals of FormsAuthentication would have a look at it by logging into our system. It should be at least Scottgu! Somebody told me that Microsoft Premier Support is a good choice for this kind of problems. We have no MSDN subscription or other connection to microsoft that enables us to use MPS. Is there a way to get support on a incident base? Are there other ways to get this kind of support?   • How do I do multipled level routes best in MVC

    I have a site where I would like an URL like: /Some maincategory name/{id}/Some subcategory name/{id}/Some item name/{id} I include the IDs of each level since the name is not unique. This is doable but I have to create a new routing for each level. My Html.ActionLink also looks nasty. Each level has it's own controller since the levels are completely different. The URLs could be something like this: _/Birds/2/Waders/4/Flamingos/23_ _/Mammals/5/Dogs/23/Longeared/25/Somedog/76_ _/Insects/7/Spiders_ This is just an example and not what I'm going to use. My applications has nothing to do with animals. Is there a good way of doing this or should I use the standard routing instead?

There is a class called CollectionHelper that defines the following constant varibale: public final class CollectionHelper { public static final List EMPTY_LIST = Collections.unmodifiableList( new ArrayList(0 ) ; public static final Collection EMPTY_COLLECTION = Collections.unmodifiableCollection(new ArrayList(0) ); public static final Map EMPTY_MAP = Collections.unmodifiableMap( new HashMap(0) ); They have used these constants to initialize collections with immutable instances. Why they didn't simply use the Collections.EMPTY_LIST for initializing lists? Is there a benefit in using the following method?

  • Buffer management for socket application best practice

    Having a Windows IOCP app............ I understand that for async i/o operation (on network) the buffer must remain valid for the duration of the send/read operation. So for each connection I have one buffer for the reading. For sending I use buffers to which I copy the data to be sent. When the sending operation completes I release the buffer so it can be reused. So far it's nice and not of a big issue. What remains unclear is how do you guys do this? Another thing is that even when having things this way, I mean multi-buffers, the receiver side might be flooded (talking from experience) with data. Even setting SO_RCVBUF to 25MB didn't help in my testings. So what should I do? Have a to-be-sent queue?

    We have an application which needs to detect duplicates in certain fields on create. We are using Hibernate as our persistence layer and using Spring's HibernateTemplate. My question is whether it is better to do so an upfront lookup for the item before creating, or to attempt to catch the DataIntegrityViolation exception and then check if this is caused by a duplicate entry.

  • Best way to make a WYSIWYG in Flex?

    Hello, I have a client that wants a WYSIWYG form that behaves like MS word. It will have some section labels in it, with users expected to enter notes for each section, and it needs a place holder for a chart. The trick is that the user needs to know where page breaks are going to fall when printed. The customer agrees to fixed size paper with fixed sized margins. How should I approach this challenge? Thank you very much for your suggestions. Here is an example: Section 1: Explain Idea Here { As user types in this section, the space between this section and the next section expands, but I as the user can't delete the lines that say Section 1 or 2, or the place holder for the chart. However if I type a lot of text, I need to display where the page breaks are with a dashed line or something, so the user can make sure the content enters appears on the desired page.     Hello, I'm developing a MVC .Net site and would like to implement a CMS system. So far I have looked at Umbraco, which looks good but the help is poor and the getting started video section is empty, and dotnetnuke, which again looks good but I get the impression its aimed at non developers, plus to has much more than I need and want. In my last job I created a basic custom CMS system that worked by simply adding values into the database, the application called the text from there. it worked fine but I don’t have the source code. what I'm after is a simple CMS system that really just controls text and images, I dont need all the fancy stuff thats in umbraco and dotnetnuke, all the design and CSS i can do myself. also as im working with MVC (which is awesome, and such a breath of fresh air compared to the web forms/telerik crap I have to put up with at work) it needs to be compatible. A simple CMS, can anyone provide any suggestion ? Truegilly

  • Best way to model map values in Grails?

    Hi guys, I have to implement map values in my Grails app. I have a class that can contain 0..N OsmTags, and the key is unique. In Java I would model this with a Map in each object, but I don't know how to map classes in Grails. So I defined this class: class OsmTag { /** OSM tag name, e.g. natural */ String key /** OSM tag value, e.g. park */ String value static constraints = { key blank:false, size:2..80,matches:/[\S]+/, unique:false value blank:false, size:1..250,matches:/[\S]+/, unique:false } } That works ok, but it's actually quite ugly because the tag key is not unique. Is there a better way to model this issue? Cheers

  • Best way to remove CSS rounded-corner halo?

    I'm getting a tiny rounded corner halo effect that I'd like to get rid of. In this example, look for the effect in the red circle. I seem to recall a while back reading an article on just this problem. Anyone have a link to that article? Otherwise, any good ways to get rid of the halo? It is being caused because the dl has all four corners rounded. This allows the bottom of the dl to be rounded. The dt sits over the dl and has its top left and top right corners rounded. But there is a slight overflow of the dl curve behind the dt curve, causing the halo. My solution is to increase the border-radius of the dl so that it is hidden behind the dt corner. But it seems like a hack and adds a fair amount more CSS. I'm wondering if there is a better solution.

I discovered the following resource on maxmind: http://geolite.maxmind.com/download/geoip/api/php/timezone/ I suspect that I could use this with another api that provides the state that an area code belongs to.     Hi all Yes, I know GZipStream or DeflateStream is the common ones in .NET Framework which handle compression/decompression. I wish to have compress/decompress functions in my program, but I wish a .NET Framework C# one, not a 3rd party open source. I can't use because of those copyright restrictions in my program. GZipStream and DeflateStream are not so good. for e.g., GZipStream compress a file to 480KB while 7Zip compress the same file to the size of 57KB. Does Microsoft have other good compression methods??? Thanks

I'm now trying to accomplish this and is asking for a bit of advise: I'm basically trying to build a filter with 4 input elements, and 1 output. I have 4 select (drop down) elements in my page. As soon as one of them is changed, I need to build a href and get the partial view with the return values. My questionis now if I should try to build the href in the select element or if I can do it once in jquery, and don't have to have duplicated code. How would I accomplish this?

I'm not sure what's possible outside of the debugger. Is all lost with an EXC_BAD_ACCESS or can I still catch it and get something useful into a log? Is the program main() the spot to put a @try/@catch?

  • Best way to structure AJAX for a Zend Framework application

    Sorry, but there's a lot of outdated and just plain bad information for Zend Framework, since it has changed so much over the years and is so flexible. I thought of having an AJAX module service layer, with controllers and actions that interact with my model. Easy, but not very extensible and would violate DRY. If I change the logistics of some process I'll have to edit the AJAX controllers and the normal controllers. So ideally I would load the exact same actions for both javascript and non-javascript users. I have thought about maybe checking for $_POST['ajax'], if it is set I would load a different (json'y) view for the data. Was wondering how/a good way to do this (front controller plugin I imagine?) or if someone can point me to an UP TO DATE tutorial that describes a really good way for building a larger ajax application. thx

  • Best Tomcat6 JNDI + Hibernate configuration for session/transaction support

    I use tomcat6 as a servlet container, and need to integrate Hibernate 3.2 into the project. I found a document how to configure SessionFactory lookup through JNDI, though it does not work as expected. Quote: Hibernate works in any environment that uses JTA, in fact, we recommend to use JTA whenever possible as it is the standard Java transaction interface. End of quote. In hibernate config I indicate current_session_context_class = jta and now I get an error "No TransactionManagerLookup specified". The problem is that Tomcat does not support JTA, and to get it worked, if I understand it correctly, you need to add JOTM or other library to Tomcat. But according to quote it is recommended to use JTA. What can you recommend in this situation?
