  • Oracle sysman password reset and enterprise manager

    We are running oracle 10g.yesterday we had to reset sysman(and all other sys acounts)user with alter user command. Password change command worked by oracle enterprise manager does not see the database running. As per oracle docs,we did change the password(and encryption setting) and restarted the dbconsole service. Password does get encrypted after restarted but em still does not see the database online. Are we missing any other important step? Thanks Aboxy

  • What are the licensing issues involved in the Oracle/Apache java dispute?

    I've just started following with interest the soap opera involving Oracle's acquisition of Java and the detriment of goodwill it seems to have generated in the open source community. Specifically, I'm now trying to get my head around the implications of Oracle's decision to refuse Apache an open source license for Harmony. My questions: 1) What is Harmony anyway? Their website states "Apache Harmony software is a modular Java runtime with class libraries and associated tools". How is this different than J2SE or J2EE? Or is Harmony akin to Andriod? 2) The crux of this issue is around the Java Technology Compatibility Kit (or TCK) which certifies that your implementation adheres to the JSR specifications. If I understand correctly, Oracle refuse to offer free or open source license access to the TCK, denying projects like Harmony from being released as open source. Why is this such a big deal for Apache? E.g. why can't (or don't) they release Harmony under a restricted license? 3) From this site is the following quote: It looks like Oracle’s plan is to restrict deployments of Java implementations in certain markets, particularly on mobile platforms, so that it can monetize its own Java offering in those markets without any competition. Presumably anything Oracle produced would be subject to the same restrictions it is imposing on others with respect to end-technology licensing, so how could they get a leg up on the competition? While no doubt distateful, wouldn't other competitors such as Google or Apache be able to release competing platforms under the same license as Oracle?

  • Did Oracle make public any plans to charge for JDK in the near future? [closed]

    I recently read an article: Twelve Disaster Scenarios Which Could Damage the Technology Industry which mentioned among other the possible "disaster scenarios" also: Oracle starts charging for the JDK, giving the following as argument: Oracle could start requiring license fees for the JDK from everyone but desktop users who haven't uninstalled the Java plug-in for some reason. This would burn down half the Java server-side market, but allow Oracle to fully monetize its acquisitions and investments. [...] Oracle tends to destroy markets to create products it can fully monetize. Even if you're not a Java developer, this would have a ripple effect throughout the market. [...] I actually haven't figured out why Larry hasn't decided Java should go this route yet. Some version of this scenario is actually in my company's statement of risks. I know guessing for the future is impossible, and speculating about that would be endless so I will try to frame my question in an objective answarable way: Did Oracle or someone from Oracle under anonymity, make public, or hinted, leaked to the public such a possibility or the above is plain journalistic speculation? I am unable to find the answer myself with Google generating a lot of noise by searching JDK.

    Struggling with locating patches for Sun products? Can't find your Oracle System Drivers? This question has been raised many times by customers and was the source of a short video in the Oracle System Support Newsletter in February 2012. The transition between SunSolve and My Oracle Support is to change how you think about the type of patch your looking for. For example, in SunSolve you might have typed e1000g if looking for an Enternet Driver.. but entering e1000g will not find anything in My Oracle Support - Patches and Update Menu. As you need to use the Product (Advanced) search which is driven of the Product Name, therefore you need to type "Ethernet" and select the ethernet product you are looking for to locate the patches for this product. Just to recap that video: If you are looking for the e1000g Ethernet Driver - You need to use Advance Search and search for Enternet 1. Log into My Oracle Support - Select Patches and Updates - Select Product or Family (Advanced Search). 2. In the product line enter: Ethernet and select the product name from the menu. 3. Check remove supersede patches - that ensure you only get relevant current patches in the results. 4. Select Search and the results are displayed. Now you have more options to include the platform (Solaris,Linux etc.) if want to further narrow the search. Need more information?   • The Growing Importance of Network Virtualization

    The Growing Importance of Network Virtualization We often focus on server virtualization when we discuss cloud computing, but just as often we neglect to consider some of the critical implications of that technology. The ability to create virtual environments (or VEs [1]) means that we can create, destroy, activate and deactivate, and more importantly, MOVE them around within the cloud infrastructure. This elasticity and mobility has profound implications for how network services are defined, managed, and used to provide cloud services. It's not just servers that benefit from virtualization, it's the network as well. Network virtualization is becoming a hot topic, and not just for discussion but for companies like Oracle and others who have recently acquired net virtualization companies [2,3]. But even before this topic became so prominent, Solaris engineers were working on technologies in Solaris 11 to virtualize network services, known as Project Crossbow [4]. And why is network virtualization so important? Because old assumptions about network devices, topology, and management must be re-examined in light of the self-service, elasticity, and resource sharing requirements of cloud computing infrastructures. Static, hierarchical network designs, and inter-system traffic flows, need to be reconsidered and quite likely re-architected to take advantage of new features like virtual NICs and switches, bandwidth control, load balancing, and traffic isolation. For example, traditional multi-tier Web services (Web server, App server, DB server) that share net traffic over Ethernet wires can now be virtualized and hosted on shared-resource systems that communicate within a larger server at system bus speeds, increasing performance and reducing wired network traffic. And virtualized traffic flows can be monitored and adjusted as needed to optimize network performance for dynamically changing cloud workloads. Additionally, as VEs come and go and move around in the cloud, static network configuration methods cannot easily accommodate the routing and addressing flexibility that VE mobility implies; virtualizing the network itself is a requirement. Oracle Solaris 11 [5] includes key network virtualization technologies needed to implement cloud computing infrastructures. It includes features for the creation and management of virtual NICs and switches, and for the allocation and control of the traffic flows among VEs [6]. Additionally it allows for both sharing and dedication of hardware components to network tasks, such as allocating specific CPUs and vNICs to VEs, and even protocol-specific management of traffic. So, have a look at your current network topology and management practices in view of evolving cloud computing technologies. And don't simply duplicate the physical architecture of servers and connections in a virtualized environment…rethink the traffic flows among VEs and how they can be optimized using Oracle Solaris 11 and other Oracle products and services. [1] I use the term "virtual environment" or VE here instead of the more commonly used "virtual machine" or VM, because not all virtualized operating system environments are full OS kernels under the control of a hypervisor…in other words, not all VEs are VMs. In particular, VEs include Oracle Solaris zones, as well as SPARC VMs (previously called LDoms), and x86-based Solaris and Linux VMs running under hypervisors such as OEL, Xen, KVM, or VMware.     I need to create a stored procedure that: Accepts a table name as a parameter Find its dependencies (FKs) Removes them Truncate the table I created the following so far based on http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/1376/disable-enable-drop-and-recreate-sql-server-foreign-keys/ . My problem is that the following script successfully does 1 and 2 and generates queries to alter tables but does not actually execute them. This version number is different from the assembly version in the project properties (which in turn is automatically displayed in a generated WPF about box). Is there a way to sync the ClickOnce version number and the project number in the assembly properties? Goal is to get an automatically increasing and identical version number for both places.

  • How to make Solution Explorer behave after clearing search?

    I currently have a VS installation with no extensions to see how that works out. For navigation that means making heavy use of Ctrl+; aka Search Solution Explorer. While the search itself is ok, it has one major drawback for me that makes it a pain to use for me (both with keyboard and mouse): Solution with two projects, one collapsed, one opened: Use Ctrl+; and start typing until match found from collapsed project What I want now is to simply clear the search and return to the previous view. Seems like a pretty standard requirement, no? But there seems to be no such functionality built in. Problem with the current commands that come close (pressing Esc, clicking Back or Home buttons in Solution Explorer Toolbar) is all the same: they have the extremely annoying behaviour that they insist on suddenly uncollapsing the previously collapsed project and track the match found! (Btw the Track Active Item in Solution Explorer option is turned of in the options). This makes no sense from a UX point of view? You select some kind of 'undo' command, the search box clears which is expected, but then suddenly there's an item visible from a previous search: So if the collapsed project has like 50 items in it, solution explorer is now useless visually since it litters the screen with stuff you don't want to see, and worse you have to manually collapse the project again to return to the previous view. Is there a way around this? I thought maybe keyboard shortcuts for Back/Home would be different, but the commands do not seem to be registered. I looked into EnvDTE80.DTE2.ToolWindows.SolutionExplorer but it has no properties/methods that have anything to do with this issue. And somewhere in the tree there is a Microsoft.VisualStudio.PlatformUI.SolutionPivotNavigator which is probably the class responsible for this behaviour, but I have no idea how to access it?

I am a bit confused here. because the function ac_search is declared as a global (not inside any container). Why can't I call it at this place? Am I missing something?   • Developing a 2D Game for Windows Phone 8

    I would like to develop a 2D game for Windows Phone 8. I am a professional Application Developer by day and this seems like a fun hobby. But I have been disapointed trying to get going. It seems that 2D games (far and away the majority of games) do not have any real support. It seems the Windows Phone makers did not include support for Direct2D. So unless you are planning to make a fully 3D app, you are out of luck. So, if you just wanted to make a nice 2D app, these are your choices: Write your game using Xaml and C# (Performance Issues?) Write your game using Direct3D and but only draw on one plane. Use the DirectX Took Kit found on codeplex. It allows you to use the dying XNA framework's API for development. Number 3 seems the best for my game. But I hate to waste my time learning the XNA api when Microsoft has clearly stated that it is not going to be supported going forward. Number 2 would work, but 3D development is really hard. I would rather not have to do all that to get the 2D effect. (Assuming Direct2D is easier. I have yet to look into that.) Number 1 seems the easiest, but I worry that my app will not run well if it is based off of xaml rendering rather than DirectX. What is the suggested method from Microsoft? And who decided that 2D games were going to get shortchanged?

    At the moment, I've got a JSON file with content looking like this: { "username": "test", "someNumber":100 } I'm using JSON.Net to fetch the .JSON file from a webserver - C#: var http = new HttpClient(); http.MaxResponseContentBufferSize = Int32.MaxValue; var response = await http.GetStringAsync(URI); var result = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<DatClass.Result>(response); This works great together with the class getting/setting the properties. However, what I would like to know is whether there's a good way for a user to update the .JSON file through a textbox UI? As in: [textbox - update username] [update button] - username sent to server - .JSON file updated - [textblock - showing updated username in UI]. I'm not looking for exact code solutions, I'm rather looking for good solutions on this, and/or if this is a terrible idea of an easy database(?).

    I have written the following lines of code to open a file under InstalledFolder directory: Platform::String^ locationPath = Platform::String::Concat(Package::Current->InstalledLocation->Path, "\\Assets\\Logo.png"); CREATEFILE2_EXTENDED_PARAMETERS extendedParams = {0}; extendedParams.dwSize = sizeof(CREATEFILE2_EXTENDED_PARAMETERS); extendedParams.dwFileAttributes = FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL; extendedParams.dwFileFlags = FILE_FLAG_SEQUENTIAL_SCAN; extendedParams.dwSecurityQosFlags = SECURITY_ANONYMOUS; extendedParams.lpSecurityAttributes = nullptr; extendedParams.hTemplateFile = nullptr; Wrappers::FileHandle file( CreateFile2( locationPath->Data(), GENERIC_READ, 0, OPEN_EXISTING, &extendedParams ) ); DWORD e = GetLastError(); if (file.Get() == INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE) { throw ref new Platform::FailureException(); } The CreateFile2 returns access denied error.
