  • How can a Perfmon "% Processor Time" counter be over 100%?

    The counter, Process: % Processor Time (sqlservr), is hovering around 300% on one of my database servers. This counter reflects the percent of total time SQL Server spent running on CPU (user mode + privilege mode). The book, Sql Server 2008 Internals and Troubleshooting, says that anything greater than 80% is a problem. How is it possible for that counter to be over 100%?

  • Can a SQL Server have a CPU bottleneck when Processor Time is under 30%

    Is it in principle possible for the CPU to be the bottleneck on a SQL Server if the Performance Counter Processor:Processor Time is constantly under 30% on all cores? Or does low Processor Time automatically allow me to rule out the CPU as a potential trouble source? I am asking this because SQL Nexus lists CPU as the top bottleneck on a server with low Processor Time values.

  • Client-Server Networking Between PHP Client and Java Server

    Hi there, I have a university project which is already 99% completed. It consists of two parts-website (PHP) and desktop (Java). People have their accounts on the website and they wish to query different information regarding their accounts. They send an SMS which is received by desktop application which queries database of website (MySQL) and sends the reply accordingly. This part is working superbly. The problem is that some times website wishes to instruct the desktop application to send a specific SMS to a particular number. Apparently there seems no way other than putting all the load to the DB server... This is how I made it work. Website puts SMS jobs in a specific table. Java application polls this table again and again and if it finds a job, it executes it. Even this part is working correctly but unfortunately it is not acceptable by my university to poll the DB like this. :( The other approach I could think of is to use client-server one. I tried making Java server and its PHP client. So that whenever an SMS is to be sent, the website opens a socket connection to desktop application and sends two strings (cell # and SMS message). Unfortunately I am unable to do this. I was successfully to make a Java server which works fine when connected by a Java client, similarly my PHP client connects correctly to a PHP server, but when I try to cross them, they start hating each other... PHP shows no error but Java gives StreamCorruptedException when it tries to read header of input stream. Could someone please tell what I can try to make PHP client and Java server work together? Or if the said purpose can be achieved by another means, how? Regards, Yasir

    I have a server side program that creates a listening server side socket. The problem occurring is that it seems as if the client side sends a connect request it gets rejected if the server side socket is listening but connects if the server side program is not running. I can see the server side program getting the client request when debugging. It seems as if the client cannot connect to a listening socket. Any suggestions on a resolution?   • Visual C# 2008 Express connection to SQL Server 2008 Express problem

    Hi guys, I have a problem with Visual C# 2008 express (SP1) connecting to SQL Server 2008 express. The "Add Connection" window (wherever initiated) doesn't list existing sql server and no option for sql server except a compact edition. Note that, I've got the VWD 2008 express (SP1) on the same machine which shows the window regularly (with SQL server listed) and SQL Server Management studio works fine with the server as well. I've seen other similar posts, did take some advices: reinstalled the VC#, services run ok, etc... but with no success with VC# so far. Again, on the same machine the VWD shows the dialog with sql server option regularly, but VC# shows only 3 options in "Change data source" dialog (1. Microsoft Access Database File (OLE DB) 2. Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5, 3. Microsoft SQL Server Database File) Any idea? Thanks in advice, Phil

  • SQL Server Issue: Could not allocate space for object ... primary filegroup is full

    Trying to figure out a problem at an office that has SQL Server 2005 installed on Windows SBS Server 2008. Here's the setup: It's an office, and the person who set this all up is nowhere to be found. I'm the best hope they have... One of the programs they use on a workstation gives them an error of "Could not allocate space for object 'Billing' in database "MyDatabase" because primary filegroup is full" when trying to save an entry in their software. I searched around for hours, looking for possible solutions. One was to check for available disk space, and another was to defrag. I checked the hard drives on the server, and there is plenty of space free. I also defragged, which may have helped the problem somewhat. It's hard to say, because it seems like with the nature of the error, if you try over and over you might get it to actually save. My next step was to try to see if autogrowth was enabled on the database. This would seem to be a likely / possible solution, but I can't access the database! If I run the SQL Management Studio, I can log in as my Windows user and view the list of databases. However, if I try to do anything (actually view the database, view the properties, add or edit users), I get errors that I don't have permission. For what it's worth, I also tried runing Management Studio as Administrator, in case that would help. No difference, though. Now, what I'm guessing is going on -- from my limited knowledge of SQL and from reading online -- is that though I'm logged in as a Windows administrator, that account does NOT have SQL access. I do see a list of SQL users, including SA, but I again don't have permission to add one or to change the password on an existing one. And nobody at the office has any idea what the SQL passwords could be. So... here's my thinking thus far: 1 - The "Could not allocate" error likely points to a database that needs to be allowed to autogrow. Especially since I verified there is plenty of free space and the HD has been defragmented. 2 - Enabling autogrow would be very easy to do if I had the proper access within SQL Management Stuido. That leads me to this link: http://blogs.technet.com/b/sqlman/archive/2011/06/14/tips-amp-tricks-you-have-lost-access-to-sql-server-now-what.aspx It sounds like it's a step-by-step guide for giving me the access I need to SQL. I'm guessing that if I followed this guide, I would be able to then log in to the SQL server via Management Studio with the proper permissions, and would be able to enable autogrow (or simply view the status of the existing database), and hopefully solve the "Could not allocate space" problem! So I guess I have a few questions: 1 - Would you guys agree with my "diagnosis"? Think I'm barking up the right tree? 2 - Is there any risk at all in hurting / disabling / wrecking the current SQL database or setup with me going through the guide to regain SQL access? I understand that per the guide, I would have to temporarily shut down SQL, so obviously it wouldn't be accessible during that time. But it wouldn't be worth the risk if there's a chance I could mess anything up... Like I said, the workstations ARE currently accessing the database somehow, but nobody knows with what login info or anything. Basically, it's set up, it works (usually), but if they had to reload the software, nobody would know how. Any feedback would be appreciated!! The problem is such that it's not an emergency for them, but an annoyance. If I could fix it, it would be wonderful.   • Sql Server Backup and move backup file: How to cope with file permissions?

    With our product we have a simple backup tool for the sql server database. This tool should just make a full backup and restore to and from any folder. Of course, the user (usually an administrator) needs permission to write to the target folder. To avoid the problem of not being able to perform a backup to a network drive, I write the backup to a temp file in the Sql Server backup directory. Then I move it to the target folder. This requires permission to delete the temporary file from the sql servers backup folder. Restore is the same in the other direction. This seemed to work fine until someone tested it on vista, where the user does not have write access to the backup folder by default. So there are many solutions to solve this, but none of them seemed to be really nice. One solution would be to find another folder for the temporary file. Both the sql server user as well as the administrator performing the backup need read and write permissions. Is there such a directory? Any other ideas? Thanks a lot.

Assume the number of records in the table and number of users are large. So any performance gains matter. Hence the importance of the question.   • Migrate TFS 2010 Application Tier to another server on the same domain

    I'm in the process of looking into the possibility of moving our TFS 2010 Application Tier to another server from the one it is on at the moment so that we can repurpose the hardware. I've been looking through the Microsoft Documentation over at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms404869.aspx, but this assumes that everything is stored on one box (Application and Data tiers). In my setup however, our Data tier is separate to the Application tier and will be staying where it is. I think I should be able to do this but for my own peace of mind, would there be any issues or implications if I merely installed the Application Tier on the new hardware and then connected it to the existing data tier?

  • How is timezone handled in the lifecycle of an ADO.NET + SQL Server DateTime column?

    Using SQL Server 2008. This is a really junior question and I could really use some elaborate information, but the information on Google seems to dance around the topic quite a bit and it would be nice if there was some detailed elaboration on how this works... Let's say I have a datetime column and in ADO.NET I set it to DateTime.UtcNow. 1) Does SQL Server store DateTime.UtcNow accordingly, or does it offset it again based on the timezone of where the server is installed, and then return it offset-reversed when queried? I think I know that the answer is "of course it stores it without offsetting it again" but want to be certain. So then I query for it and cast it from, say, an IDataReader column to a DateTime. As far as I know, System.DateTime has metadata that internally tracks whether it is a UTC DateTime or it is an offsetted DateTime, which may or may not cause .ToLocalTime() and .ToUniversalTime() to have different behavior depending on this state. So, 2) Does this casted System.DateTime object already know that it is a UTC DateTime instance, or does it assume that it has been offset? Now let's say I don't use UtcNow, I use DateTime.Now, when performing an ADO.NET INSERT or UPDATE. 3) Does ADO.NET pass the offset to SQL Server and does SQL Server store DateTime.Now with the offset metadata? So then I query for it and cast it from, say, an IDataReader column to a DateTime. 4) Does this casted System.DateTime object already know that it is an offset time, or does it assume that it is UTC?

  • How to use AD/GPO/Print Services to "push out" a new printer driver to replace a broken one? How did my server get a broken driver?

    Context: We have an AD/GPO-managed corporate network with a little over a hundred PCs running Windows 7 x64, and a few managed printers. Our Server2008R2 primary domain controller is configured as a print server for them all. Problem: After a recent windows update and restart (no printer driver updates were included) on the DC, a particular shared printer (Lexmark T650) has begin exhibiting some strange behavior. First, it prints a preceding and following blank page for almost every document, on jobs submitted by about half of client machines (no separator page is configured on the server or any of the clients I've seen). Second, whenever someone tries to access "Printing Preferences" on any client, they recieve the following error message (this happens everywhere, 100% of the time, and didn't happen before the update on the DC): Once they click "OK", the prefs screen appears (with no separator page selected) and everything seems fine. I'm not even sure if these two issues are related, but everyone seems affected by one or both of those issues. What I've Tried: I've been hesitant to un-deploy the problem printer, or remove it via GPO, as it's pretty heavily used. I've tried updating (via MS update and our internal WSUS server) client machines and the DC. No printer driver updates have appeared, and no number of updates or restarts on the server or the client seems to have achieved anything other than my boss getting grumpy that I'm bouncing the domain controller so often. I've tried deleting the drivers on the server, and re-installing them from the original source that has worked for the past year...no change. I've tried selecting "New Driver" for one of the shared printers on a client machine, running as domain admin, and pushed the latest driver found by MSupdate back up to the DC. This changed the version number of the driver recorded in the print server manager, but caused no change--on the client I pushed from, or on any other. The error still appears. Question: Why the heck is this happening? Obviously, I got a bad driver from somewhere, but how do I get rid of it? I don't know of any "roll back drivers" functionality for centrally managed print drivers like Windows offers for other devices. How would I a) get this issue resolved on a client, and b) push the fix to the other members of the domain?

    My web service app on my Windows XP box is trying to log in to my sql server 2005 database on the same box. The machine is part of a domain. I am logged in in the domain and I am an admin on my machine. I am using Windows Authentication in my connection string as in "Server=myServerAddress;Database=myDataBase;Trusted_Connection=True". SQLServer is configured for both types of authentication (mixed mode) and accepts remote connections and accepts tcp and named pipes protocols. Integrated authentication is enabled in IIS and with and without anonymous access. 'Everyone' has access to computer from network setting in local security settings. ASPNET is a user in the sql server and has access to the daatabase. user is mapped to the login. The app works fine for other developers which means the app shouldn't be changed (It's not new code). So it seems it's my machine which has an issue. I am getting the error "Login failed for user ''. The user is not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection" Note the blank user name. Why am I getting this error when both the app and database are on my machine? I can use SQL Server authentication but don't want to. I can connect to the database using SSMS and my Windows credentials. It might be related to setspn, kerberos, delegation, AD. I am not sure what further checks to make?

    I'm trying to design a system similar to the traditional server monitoring systems like MOM, Tivoli, Open View, where an agent will record data and then upload it to a central database once a day, but them also be able to send immediate alerts back to the server. I'm not sure what the best methodology might be for this. I've started looking at Microsoft sync services but I'm not sure if it will fit my needs. I'm using VS2008 and C#. Does anyone have any experience or ideas about how I should go about this task?

Edit: All but asked question, so to be technical: How can I search the index and have it not return files from the vti folders? Switching to use an ixsso query object is possible, but i'd rather avoid it for this particular instance.

  • Blank desktop when logging into a Virtualized Windows 2008 Terminal Server?

    We have a Virtualized Terminal Server running Windows Server 2008. When the admin user logs in, everything is fine. When anyone else logs in, their desktop and start menu is blank (they have the taskbar, start button, and quick launch links though). If I go into Windows Explorer, I can see icons in their desktop folder (although the icon image is missing and it is just displaying the generic icon), but can't run any of them. If I login with a user that is part of the Administrator group in Active directory, I get the same behavior except I can launch the programs found in the Desktop Folder of Windows Explorer. I cannot drag these items out onto the desktop though - The cursor doesn't allow me to drop them. From Task Manager I can see that explorer.exe and dwm.exe are both running. The Authenticated Users and Interactive groups are both under the Users group, along with our network's Domain Users group. Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it? Also, not sure if it's related but about 1 in every 3 logins just hangs at a completely blank blue screen (no start button, taskbar, or quick launch buttons) and needs to be disconnected / reset by an admin. Edit I just noticed that the desktop itself doesn't even respond to click events. It's almost like the entire desktop is missing. At first I thought it didn't respond to right-click events because of an AD policy, but then I noticed if you open the Start Menu and click the desktop, the start menu doesn't shut like it should

    The SQL Server team has released CU #10 for SQL Server 2012 RTM. KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2891666 Build # is 11.0.2420 This build has 4 fixes For most customers, this cumulative update hardly justifies the download, never mind patching and regression testing, at least IMHO. Of the four fixes, two involve SSAS, one involves SSRS, and one involves the database engine tuning advisor. Relevant for builds 11.0.2100 -> 11.0.2419.
