    I am trying to configure a reverse proxy with apache, but I am getting a No protocol handler was valid for the URL error, which I do not understand.   • Windows DVD Maker on Windows 8?

    Something I really miss in Windows 8 is the Windows DVD Maker. I tried to get it running on Windows 8 by copying the DVD Maker directory from Windows 7 over to Windows 8. When I run it, I get the following error: I had hoped that this could be resolved by installing the Media Center add-on for Windows 8, but that did not have any effect. Several forum posts have suggested installing a codec pack such as the K-Lite codec pack, but I have always had bad experiences with those. I did, however, try to install the Shark007 codec pack, but that didn't work either. I also tried running the following commands (which did complete successfully, mind you) in an elevated command prompt, but they didn't change the outcome. regsvr32 msmpeg2vdec.dll regsvr32 msmpeg2adec.dll regsvr32 msmpeg2enc.dll I know there are other DVD making programs out there, some are even free, but the few I have tried do not compare to Windows DVD Maker's simplicity and beauty. Is there any way to make it work on Windows 8?

  • iPhone 3.1 Black Screen

    Since I've updated my 3G iPhone to 3.1, it will become unresponsive after ~4-5 hours. It looks like it's off, but it's not. None of the buttons do anything that I can see. The only way I can get a screen back is to do a hard reset (Power + Home). Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do to fix it? I've had it 3 happen 3 times already. Very annoying. Apparently, the Discussions forum on Apple.com also shows lots of people are having the same problem. One guy said he did a restore and that fixed it for him, which I haven't tried yet because many others also tried that and it didn't help. A few others have said turning off WIFI fixes it for them, so I'm going to try that today. Another thing I've noticed is that now, when I plug in my iPhone to my Macbook Pro, iTunes 9 does not launch. It used to before the update. ** Further update and possible solution ** I left my iPhone plugged into my Macbook Pro yesterday while at work, and didn't use it much throughout the day. I noticed it didn't lock up once. I suspect this was because it was connected to a power source. I continued to use my iPhone with no problem yesterday and today. Still no lockups as of now. I personally think this was Spotlight and/or Genius "doing it's thing" from a new install. Kinda like an OS upgrade on your Mac... Spotlight has to rebuild itself and those first couple of hours can be kinda sluggish. This would be even more so on the iPhone where processing power is limited, and I'm sure the processor is clocked down a bit while on battery power, which would further amplify the problem. Again, just my guess. My iPhone is working fine now. ** Final Solution ** Update to 3.1.2. Problem solved.

  • Why suddenly DOS-type hexadecimal file names?

    One of the fairly recent folders on my XP SATA data drive suddenly shows DOS-type hexadecimal file names (i.e., eight characters with three-character extensions) I deleted them and now my Recycle bin shows them with a tilde (i.e., 194ABE~1.JPG). The images are all valid but the file names I assigned are gone. (The 2-terabyte SATA data drive has no OS, if that matters.) The last time this happened on an IDE drive, I was able to back up all the remaining files just before the drive died. Am I facing the same scenario now with my 2-terabyte SATA data drive? It is only a couple of years old. Should I quickly buy another one and back up 20 years of files to it before my current drive dies?

    I am running debian Squeeze in console mode on a plug computer. I control it opening an SSH session from a Windows machine, on the same local network. I started downloading a large file using wget. What I get is a console progress bar showing the percentage of data downloaded, file size, and download rate.     Is it possible to do something like find -perm g=u? I say "like" because -perm mode requires mode to specify all the bits, not just g, and because I can't put u on the right side of the =, like I can with the chmod command: you can specify exactly one of the letters ugo: the permissions granted to the user who owns the file (u), the permissions granted to other users who are members of the file's group (g), and the permissions granted to users that are in neither of the two preceding categories (o). At the moment, I'm doing find | xargs -d \\n ls -lartd | egrep '^.(...)\1 which is just ugly. Thanks.

  • How could Google Latitude find my exact PC location with no GPS or public wifi?

    I found a similar question here but I still don't get it. You see, I live in a small town and every time I check my IP location via online services or speed test websites, my location appears to be my ISP server location (which in my case is 250 miles away). But when I tried Google latitude, it pinpointed my exact location within less than 100 meters! I use Windows Vista, Google Chrome, and when I got the message that "Google is trying to locate you", I agreed just to check what the result will be. It was scary, very scary! What I've come up after reading the above link is that Google have a kind of extensive WiFi database locations. That could be understandable with the case of public and open WiFis that are used with a lot of people. Some of them might be using applications that could gather location data and somehow this information ends up in giant Google databases. From those, Google could pinpoint a WiFi location based on its MAC address along with these bits of info that have been gathered via various sources. The issue here is that my WiFi is private, I don't even broadcast my WiFi name. So how on earth did Google find my exact PC location? Please break down the answer in layman's terms as possible.

  • Recover OffScreen Window in Windows 8

    Someone asked a very similar question in regards to window recovery for windows xp: Similar Recovery I'm using windows 8 (or 8.1 now). I run Dual Monitors. On Monitor 2 I sometimes have the input switched to something else other than the windows display (Mac or PS3). If there was a program that was displaying on Window #2 that does not have 'move' where I could potentially alt-space-m arrow keys. Is there another way to get that program to display on Window #1? I tried right click on the program and doesn't seem to be anything there. I tried Windows Key and Arrows. I Tried right click toolbar and cascade. I'm hoping this is a DUP or Softball question because this annoys the crap out of me. Thanks!!

I've noticed that music played over my BT setup sometimes pitch bends in ways I don't remember the original doing, and I'm wondering if SBC has something to do with it. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 on a Mac Pro, connecting to a pair of Sony DR-BT50's. Is there a way to inspect which Bluetooth codec pulseaudio is using, what codecs both ends of the bluetooth link support?

  • Why does my computer crash randomly?

    The other day I went out to my van to get my Tower and when I opened the trunk it fell out. I brought it into the house and opened it, and everything looked ok. When I started it up, about 1-3 minutes afterwards it would crash. It did this over and over until I reseated the cooler. Everything seemed normal again, until after about 10 minutes of gameplay (any game), it would crash. I reseated my GPU + reinstalled the drivers, however I still get the same error. A while back, I'd check my 'Windows Rating' periodically, and all of them were in the '6.0-6.9' range except for my hard disk usage (always been like that [not relative]). Today I went in and looked, and my Processor and Memory was rated 5.4. I reseated my cpu and my memory, refreshed the windows rating, and then my processor and memory went from 5.4, to 5.1. A few minutes ago I reseated them once again, and now it's back to 5.4. Note: Not sure if this is relevant to the issue, but I updated my bios earlier today I honestly have no idea what the issue is, but I'm getting aggravated at the problem.   • CPU Test Similar to Memtest?

    I need an easy way to do system stability tests. I have come to rely on Prime95 which does a fantastic job of proving stability (or instability) very quickly; but it requires an OS installed. I would like something like Prime95 that stresses both CPU and RAM (maybe PCI-Ex bus also?) but runs in a nice bootable binary like Memtest86+ does, so I can boot it from a thumbdrive. Does such a thing exist?

  • Windows 7 port Forwarding Issue

    I can't get port forwarding to work now that I am using windows 7 (64-bit). I am using a wireless connection (no wired connection available). I have the ports forwarded (IP has been double checked, router settings are confirmed), there is an exception for all of the programs in question in windows firewall, and in the resource monitor windows lists the ports as available, not restricted, and yet when I either use a specific program (ie utorrent, DC++, Command & Conquer 3) or check using firefox, the port reads as closed. How do I get the port forwarding to work?
