  • [Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop] Unable to get Webmin or Vboxdrv to auto start on boot

    Ever since installing Ubuntu 10.04 I've had issues getting things to auto-start. I have installed webmin and VirtualBox but every time I reboot I have to manually run: sudo /etc/init.d/webmin start sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv start I have run: sudo update-rc.d -f webmin remove and then hodge@hodge-fs:~$ sudo update-rc.d webmin defaults update-rc.d: warning: webmin start runlevel arguments (2 3 4 5) do not match LSB Default-Start values (2 3 5) Adding system startup for /etc/init.d/webmin ... /etc/rc0.d/K20webmin -> ../init.d/webmin /etc/rc1.d/K20webmin -> ../init.d/webmin /etc/rc6.d/K20webmin -> ../init.d/webmin /etc/rc2.d/S20webmin -> ../init.d/webmin /etc/rc3.d/S20webmin -> ../init.d/webmin /etc/rc4.d/S20webmin -> ../init.d/webmin /etc/rc5.d/S20webmin -> ../init.d/webmin But it they still refuse to start on boot. Any ideas?

  • VPN - Remote Desktop Connection

    I've set up a VPN connection to my work network on my home PC - running Windows 7 It connects fine. Once connected, I can ping machines that are on my work network using my home pc, however, if I try to RDP to them, it doesn't connect... It seems to initially connect, It asks me for the logon user / password, and when I set them, and click OK, it gets stuck on a screen saying: "Securing Remote Connection" Eventually it pops up saying "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again. If the problem persists, contact the owner of the remote computer or your network administrator" I know this computer is configured to allow remote connections etc... (and I've tried it with several different machines on the remote network) Any ideas what i've set wrong?

    Assuming my server is www.mydomain.com, on Nginx 1.0.6 I'm trying to proxy all request to http://www.mydomain.com/fetch to other hosts, the destination URL is specified as a GET parameter named "url". For instance, when user requests either one: http://www.mydomain.com/fetch?url=http://another-server.mydomain.com/foo/bar http://www.mydomain.com/fetch?url=http://another-server/foo/bar it should be proxyed to http://another-server.mydomain.com/foo/bar I'm using the following nginx config and it works fine only if the url paramter contains domain name, like http://another-server.mydomain.com/...; but fails on http://another-server/... on error: another-server could not be resolved (3: Host not found) nginx.conf is: http { ... # the DNS server resolver 171.10.129.16; server { listen 80; server_name localhost; root /path/to/site/root; location = /fetch { proxy_pass $arg_url; } } Here, I'd like to resolve all URL without domain name as host name in mydomain.com, in /etc/resolv.conf, it's possible to specify default search domain name for the whole Linux system, but it doesn't affect nginx resolver: search mydomain.com Is it possible in Nginx? Or alternatively, how to "rewrite" the url parameter so that I can add the domain name?

  • Ubuntu 9.10 desktop installation via USB (boot)

    I have made a live boot USB using the UnetBootIn tool for Ubuntu 9.10. I have Windows XP SP2 installed as the primary OS, and I want to make a partition for Ubuntu. But when I try to boot it via USB, it just goes to boot menu of Ubuntu, then I enter the default type for installation. After that nothing happens, just the Ubuntu logo shows up and just that nothing happens after that. I can try the simpler task also i.e. install via CD but I want to know what's not working with this USB boot method. Thanks in advance.

  • Tooltips shadow stuck on desktop

    I tends to get this problem from time to time. The tooltips with a shadow appearing on top of everything. It's the shadow of the tooltips not disappearing after the tooltips disappear. The last one I had the tooltips was from the wifi connection list at the systray. This problem also happen to me on another computer. Both running Win7 with ATI gpu. I found this similar post Menu command stuck on screen but none of the solution helped. In fact the "Fade or slide tooltips into view" has been unchecked from the beginning. Ending task of "dwm.exe" also doesn't help. So far the only way to resolve this by restarting window. I can't post picture yet, so can't show any screenshot. Edit: Just tested a few more trick which doesn't work. 1. Turn of aero 2. Hibernate 3. Switch main display to external display and switch back. 4. Change resolution

  • Moving from Ubuntu desktop to Ubuntu Server via SSH

    So a little while ago I installed regular Ubuntu for a home server, but that gave me a lot of extra packages. What I should have done was to install Ubuntu Server, since I don't even own a screen to connect to it. Does anybody know of a way to convert my Ubuntu machine to a Ubuntu Server machine in one big swoop? It has to be done over SSH, since I don't have a screen to connect to it, like I said. It's currently running 9.10, about to be upgraded to 10.4.

  • Safari's location bar (auto-suggest and web search)

    Auto-suggest don't seem to work for queries with spaces. Am I missing something? If you select an item from the suggestion list that was matched by its title, the title is filled in before the address. Can you change it to work like in other browsers? SMRT disables searching by title completely. Can you combine Top Hit, History and Bookmarks into a single section? The preferences starting with DebugSafari4 don't work anymore. (Like DebugSafari4IncludeFancyURLCompletionList.) Can you direct unresolved addresses to something like google.com/search?q=?&btnI instead of ?.com? Like by changing keyword.URL in Firefox. Can you remove or hide the web search field? In Camino, Cruz and Fluid it can be resized to zero width. You can't circumvent the normal maximum ratio with InputFieldWidthRatio. AddressBarIncludesGoogle doesn't appear do anything in the current version. Are there fixes or workarounds to any of these? I'm lumping these issues together, because they are closely related — a lot of them were introduced when the location bar was redesigned in Safari 5. I'm also hoping to find something like an extension or a plugin that would replace the standard location bar.

  • Remote desktop to particular server tries to send print job

    We have a domain network with about 30 computers and an active directory on Windows Server SBS 2003 32bit. Whenever I connect to this server from my Windows 7 Pro 32bit client, it automatically attempts to send some sort of print job. It fails to print however and the printer never seems to receive the job. I have been seeing this happen on every computer which connects to this particular server. It seems to send these print jobs repeatedly, and to different printers, if more than one are installed. As soon as I cancel one print job, it starts another, repeats a few times and finally stops. What could be going on here? PS - I originally thought this was related to MS OneNote but this turns out to happen on computers which do not have OneNote.

  • How do I connect to a remote desktop connection to access files but not graphically

    Is there any way to connect to a remote Windows server via RDP but not graphically? What options do I have simply to connect to a remote Windows machine and access my files, but not have to do it via a graphic interface. i.e. is there an equivalent of SSH or SCP (file access is really what I'm looking to do) for Windows? I will add the caveat that I do not manage the machine, so installing any services would probably not be kosher, although I do have administrator access to the machine.

I've seen federation facilities for web resources; is ther something similar for domain logins? Our Active directory domains are not connected so we would have to use email addresses for the username to insure uniqueness. Is there any openid like mechanism that works for AD logins?

  • My Linux desktop sees my HDMI-connected monitor, but my monitor says "No signal"

    I have a Gigabyte H55M-UD2H motherboard and an Acer S271HL monitor. When I connect the monitor to the motherboard via VGA, signal works perfectly. When I connect the monitor via HDMI, the system "sees" the connection, but the monitor receives no signal (the monitor shows a blue box which reads "No Signal" and then the monitor goes into power-saving state).   • Corrupted .WAR file after transfer from 32-64 bit Windows Server to Desktop or vice versa

    Hi All, Does anyone experience this problem of corrupted .WAR file after it has been copied over the network share ? this is .WAR file (Web Archive) the J2EE application file (.WAR file is compressed with the same zip algorithm i think ?) Scenario 1: Windows Server 2008 x64 transfer into Windows XP using RDP client (Local Devices and Resources) Scenario 2: Windows XP 32 bit transfer into Windows Server 2003 x64 using shared network drive (port 445 SMB ?) for both of the scenario it always failed / corrupted (the source code seems to be duplicated at the end of line when you open up in the Eclipse / Java IDE). but when in both scenario i compressed the file into .ZIP file everything is OK. can anyone explains why this problem happens ?     The company I work for has a fairly big domain of Windows Desktops and Servers. We also have standalone servers that are remote to our site but we have direct access to. We need to audit our license usage across all Windows machines (including some VMs). I have tried a few products downloaded, but the key returned is not the one used during installation. I have one product that gives the last 5 characters correctly but needs to be installed so its not really suitable. I also have tried some PowerShell scripts one of which is here Ideally I am looking for one that can be used over a network and if possible can audit Office keys too. I've just tried Jelly Bean and some other product key tools that all return BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBB-BBBBB as the product key.

  • How do I troubleshoot root cause of a hung windows (2003) server?

    I have a pair of Windows (2003 Server) servers both running MS SQL Server (2008 EE) that each hang every few months. This has been occurring intermittently :( for the past 15 months pretty much since we started using the servers. The symptoms are as-follows: I cannot remote desktop in to troubleshoot; when I attempt to, I get stuck on a blank black screen and am never offered a login prompt I can still ping the servers I can still open a SQL connection to the server, and, CURIOUSLY/BIZARRELY, when I do a "select getdate()", the time it returns appears to be stuck on the exact fraction of a second when (I presume) the server hung. Repeated attempts to do "select getdate()" keep getting that same date, suggesting that the clock is frozen. Filesharing attempts to connect to the hung server fail with the error message: "\ServerName is not accessible. You might not have permissions to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The server's clock is not synchronized with the primary domain controller's clock." This is consistent with a frozen clock. Post-reboot, if I investigate the Windows Event Viewer logs, I can see many security accesses (coming from me and others) that I recognize were login attempts during the "down" period, but all of them in the security log are associated with that same timestamp of when the server hung. This also suggests the clock is frozen. There is not a clear cause in the Application or System event logs. I have a local Admin account on the server and am in the process of getting a domain-credentialed Admin account for better remote admin access. HP is supposed to be supporting these machines and has some low-level ILO2 access but they seem incapable of finding the root cause. A reboot will "fix" the problem but I would like to get to the root cause and solve the issue. Has anyone ever seen something like this odd clock behavior?! (If it were just one server I'd perhaps say a bad hardware clock, but two?) Can anyone advise me on what I should try to troubleshoot this sort of situation to find the root cause (or what I should tell HP to try?)

  • Identifying Hard Drive as performance bottleneck for desktop machines

    I'm working in a development team where we all use laptops so we can work in multiple locations. These laptops are proving notoriously slow for development work, but at a glance they all look to have the specification for a much faster experience: CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 Memory - 2GB of RAM We all experience the biggest delays when the hard-drives are being accessed, particularly when swap-files are being thrashed. After doing a little bit of profile, a colleague discovered that our HDDs are seeing Read/Write speeds of about 10MB/sec. This seems abnormally low and we believe it the cause of the problem. Sensibly (though somewhat annoyingly) our business wont blow money on faster drives just to see if it fixes the problem; we need to illustrate this is definitely the problem and that buying some solid-state drives will make it go away. I need some way of showing how 90% of the system resources aren't being used over the course of a day, and that whenever there is utilization, it's all in HDD reads or writes. Are there any tools I could use to provide this information? Does it seem likely the problem is going to be fixed by a faster drive? Should I be looking for alternatives?

  • WSS Search fills 10 GB limit on SBS server 2011

    I've got a SBS Server 2011 Standard SP1 that isn't very busy. 2 Users local and 2 remote. We have sharepoint that has maybe a dozen small documents at most. I've just started getting the following two error occur Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.MSSBatchHistory'.'IX_MSSBatchHistory' in database 'WSS_Search_SERVER' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. And CREATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 10240 MB per database. Digging around in SQL manager I see that WSS Search DB file size is 10241MB, the log file is only 147 MB Firstly, why is WSS Search taking up so much space? How can I stop it from doing so, and what can I do now to get things running ok. I know about log file truncating and this isn't the case here since the log is tiny. Any help is appreciated.   • Apache2.2 not responding on Windows 7 desktop

    Afternoon! I'm having some trouble with Apache2.2 on Windows 7. For over a year it's been running no problem, but all of a sudden requests have just stopped responding. They don't ever time out, the browser just keeps on waiting for a response, which makes me think it's something blocking communication with Apache. Interestingly though, if I stop Apache the requests fail immediately. The Apache service is running, and using netstat I can see it listening on port 80 as configured: TCP 127.0.0.1:80 0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING If I stop the Apache service, that line disappears. I have an entry within my hosts file for each VHost I'm trying, all pointing to 127.0.0.1. Each VHost is configured to *:80. Nothing however is getting recorded in the access or error (at debug level) log files. I've verified the file paths are correct, even though they were never changed. Neither is anything getting recorded within Windows' Event Log. The problem showed up when I added a new VHost and restarted, however I hadn't been using it for a couple of days prior so I don't believe it's the config change. I have performed a syntax check to be sure, and when starting from the command prompt no errors are reported there. I do have Windows Firewall running, however I've verified the Apache rule is correct and tried turning it off to ensure that wasn't the problem. I've reinstalled Apache, in the hope it might magically fix something using the default config, but still no joy. I've also tried using a different port. I'm completely lost for ideas now.   • Change desktop background at school

    On school computers, I can log in with a user account stored on the school network (something like that, I have no experience in networking and this sort of stuff). Everything is fine and dandy and totally works as it should, but there is one thing that I find annoying. Apparently for some reason I can't change my background to anything more than a couple of different solid colors with our school's logo still stuck in the middle. (the original background is a white logo on black background. If I change it to a different color, the central 6x6 inch black/white logo still remains, only the surrounding color is changed.) It may have been set by school administrators or something, I don't really know. I find this really ugly. Is there any way to change a setting so that I can set the background to any picture I wish? (like on a home pc...) Thanks.

    Ever since we switched over our cluster to communicate via private interfaces and created a DNS server with correct forward and reverse lookup zones, we get this message before the M/R job runs: ERROR org.apache.hadoop.hbase.mapreduce.TableInputFormatBase - Cannot resolve the host name for /192.168.3.9 because of javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: DNS name not found [response code 3]; remaining name '9.3.168.192.in-addr.arpa' A dig and nslookup both show that the reverse and forward look-ups both get good responses with no errors from within the cluster.   • windows 2003 remote desktop configuration - "Active session limit" greyed out

    I have a terminal server which works fine except for one thing: users are logged off after 2 hours, regardless of activity. I have Override user settings checked in the appropriate control window, and "End a disconnected session: Never" is set. But, I found the "Active session limit" is greyed out so I can't change it, and is set to 2 hours. The user (only 1 actually needs a session on this server for more than 2 hours at a time) is able to reconnect to his session immediately. http://the-wes.com/images/active-session-disabled.jpg Any ideas? thanks, -wes
