• Bandwidth preserving browsing mode

  I'm looking at some methods to browse the web, in situations where bandwidth is scarce (such as, flaky wifi connection, or mobile phone internet provider who overcharges the bandwidth). One thing that would save alot of bandwidth is not downloading images while browsing. This approach has two main drawbacks Sometimes a site's layout depends of images. There are some images you wish to see (thus disabling images downloading through firefox settings is not quite convenient). I'm looking therefor for a method that would allow me to Use some heuristic to find out which images are related to the website layout and allow them to be downloaded. Select a particular image from a website, download and display it. Maybe there's a firefox extension for that?

• How to prevent a URL in an email I send from being auto-linked by the recipient's email client?

  When I type a URL into an email in Outlook, it automatically converts it to a hyperlink. I can, of course, remove the hyperlink from the context menu: But, then when the email is received and when I view it in my Sent Items folder, the urls are again converted to hyperlinks. How can I prevent this? Embedded images are no good because the URL must be copy and pasteable (among numerous other reasons that this approach is not great). And it must retain the formatting applied when I send it. This answer on stackoverflow shows a good trick for preventing auto linked urls when sending an email programmatically, but I'm looking for a way to do this from the UI. Perhaps there a way to edit the HTML of the message before it is sent? If not, I guess I'm off to write an Outlook Add-in.

  You know, you see pictures like below and sort of chuckle until you actually have to deal with it. I have just inherited something that looks like the picture below. The culture of the organization does not tolerate down time very well, yet I have been tasked to 'clean it up'. The network functions as it is, and there doesn't seem to be rush to get it done, but I will have to tackle the bear at some point. I get the ugly eye when I mention anything about weekends. So my question goes, is there sort of a structured approach to this problem? My Ideas thus far: Label, Label, Label Make up my patch cables of desired length ahead of time Do each subnet at a time (appears that each subnet are for different physical locations) Replace one cable at a time for each subnet It's easier to get forgiveness than permision?

• How to replace emacs keybindings with vim keybindings in OS X GUI-level text fields

  I'm fairly fluent with VIM, but find myself having to use GUI programs (in OS X) and their awkward editing modes more and more frequently for my work. I know that OS X lets you use basic emacs keybindings in most textfields (browser window/bar, etc.). I'm wondering if it's possible to switch the emacs keybindings to vim keybindings for those GUI-level input areas. I understand that it might be possible to do that key-by-key in the keyboard layout preference pane. But that approach seems limited, cumbersome, and not very elegant. I'm thinking--and I may well be wrong here--that since OS X already ships with VIM installed, there should be a way to change a preference file deep in the system that maps VIM instead of emacs keybindings to the GUI text/input areas. Does anyone know if this is a) theoretically possible, or if there's something about how OS X maps emacs keybindings to its GUI interface that would make this impossible; and b) how/where that could be done?

• How to debug xsane "no devices available" error on 64 bit Ubuntu 10.04

  I have a Brother MFC-J615W printer/scanner and I wish to use the scanning feature across a network with a computer running 64-bit Ubuntu 10.04. I have installed the drivers from the Brother website and followed all of the instructions, and printing works fine, but xsane (installed from repositories) produces a popup with the message "no devices available" on startup. I recently had success with a similar approach when installing drivers for a Brother MFC-495CW on 32-bit Unbuntu 9.10, so I am aware of issues such as requiring root access if the driver permissions are not set correctly, but running xsane as root does not solve this problem. Are there any tools available to debug this problem further or does anyone have advice on how to proceed?

• Migrating data from Oracle database to Pervasive .DAT files

  The requirement is to migrate some tables with data from a Oracle database server to Pervasive database's .DAT file. Then those .DAT files will be used by a Pervasive database server. The restriction is that Oracle DB can not directly migrate to the Pervasive DB. It has to generate the .DAT files and then the new .DAT files will replace the old one for the Pervasive DB which will then use them for the new data. I was trying this task with SSIS. Exporting the Oracle table to a delimited .txt file and then creating a .DAT file from that text file. I can export the data from Oracle to .txt but I am not finding any way to migrate .txt to Pervasive .DAT? Is this the right approach? If not then please help with my problem.

• Running Multiple Instances of Firefox

  I am running SysInternal's Desktops 1.02 and FireFox 3.6.2. I have noticed that while I can have IE8 open in multiple Virtual Desktops, you can not Firefox. If you try you get the error message: Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must close the existing FireFox process, or restart your system. I did a little digging around to work around this and came up with creating a second profile via the Firefox profile manager (accessed by starting FF with the "-p" switch). This unfortunately created a new problem which is my add-ons (of which I use many) do not stay synchronized between profiles. Is there a better approach here?

  I'm looking to use Amazon's CloudFront to host some content in the near future. Currently, I'm keeping it very simple and I'm just uploading my content to S3 and then making a distribution available via Cloudfront. However, because I have a limited budget, I'd like to be able to limit the number of downloads or the money spent on bandwidth. As far as I can see, I can't set any quotas or budgets like you can in Google's App Engine, so I'm looking for another way of doing this. Has anyone had any experience doing this? One approach I'm thinking of is having to place a webserver with redirects in between, but that kind of defeats the simplicity of CF for me.

• Creating an office network and monitoring all activity without a proxy

  We are setting up our office network and would like to track all the websites visited by our employees. However, we would not like to use any proxy based solutions. Our work is highly dependent on applications in which you cannot configure a proxy. Hence, the approach we would like to follow is setting up a router inside a computer (something like this : http://www.techrepublic.com/article/configure-windows-server-2003-to-act-as-a-router/5844624) This will also allow us to attach multiple ethernet cards and have redundancy in internet connectivity with complete abstraction from the user about which connection is being used. But most importantly, since all the traffic will be going through the computer (configured as a router) I assume there will be a way to run packet analysis on all the request / responses being made. For example, list all the FTP servers connected to (port 21), give a graph of all the URLs visited per day by frequency. Is there already a software which does this ? Or is it possible to build something like this ?

  I have just installed a fresh MinGW installation on Windows 7 64bit using the Graphical User Interface Installer (the recommended approach) following the instructions given here and keeping the default options (i.e. installation in C:\MinGW) - hopefully without missing any steps or messing things up in any way. However, when running the ssh command, I get the following error: C:\Users\Diablossh username@host Could not create directory '/home/username/.ssh'. The authenticity of host 'username@host (host ip here)' can't be established. RSA key fingerprint is (fingerprint here). Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes Failed to add the host to the list of known hosts (/home/username/.ssh/known_hosts). So, I basically have to confirm the connection every time. Why does this happen and how do I fix it?

  How can I disallow everything in a directory except any subdirectories that have a certain name using htaccess or even vhost.conf for the site? I have a protected main directory which contains subdirectories. Each of the subdirectories have another child dir named 'thumbs', that I want to allow people access to. In the thumbs folder I have files which all start with 'thumb_' prefix for the filename. So which approach to use, .htaccess FilesMatch or vhost DirectoryMatch? and what would be the code to use?   I'm trying to administer the SMS trafic of my businesss centrally through a web portal. In Europe (except UK) we don't have a numbers/SMS trafic provider like Twilio or Clickatell, nor any build in way to administer the SMS traffic for a number via http, so I will have to buy the long numbers and administer the SMS traffic myself. For this I was looking into a hardware solution for hosting all my SIM cards - I have like 400 sims cards (= numbers). I saw that GSM modems might fit in but they don't seem to scale up very well. Could you recommend me a GSM modem? If this is not the best way to approach this, what would my alternatives be? Thanks in advance

• How do I use long names to refer to Group Managed Service Accounts (gMSA)?

  Commonly domain user accounts are used as service accounts. With domain user accounts, the username can easily be as long as 64 characters as long as the User Principal Name (UPN) is used to refer to the account, eg [email protected]. If you still use the legacy pre-Windows 2000 names (SAM) you have to truncate it to ~20 characters, eg mydomain\truncname. When using the New-ADServiceAccount PowerShell cmdlet to create a new Group Managed Service Account (gMSA) and a name longer than 15 characters is specified, an error is returned. To specify a longer name, the SAM name must be specified separately, eg: New-ADServiceAccount -Name longname -SamAccountName truncname ... To configure a service to run as the new gMSA, I can use the legacy username format mydomain\truncname$ but using usernames with a maximum of 15 characters in 2013 is a smell. How do I refer to a gMSA using the UPN-style format instead? I tried the longname$@domainfqdn approach but that didn't work. It also seems that the gMSA object in AD doesn't have a userPrincipalName attribute value specified.

• Best RAID setup for multimedia fileserver?

  I'm building a fileserver for my small office. We do film and multimedia design. Only 3 clients connected. The server is primarily for local access to graphic assets and video files. I'm looking for advice on hardware and software required. Particularly for the RAID. I have the following objectives: A) merged capacity I'd like all other systems to access the data as a single mapped network drive that has an initial capacity of 10 TB. So perhaps 5x 2TB drives (plus mirror drives for redundancy). B) easy way to increase capacity Thinking long term, I'd like to 'easily' add more drives to the array for a potential two or three fold increase in capacity. So theoretically it could get upto a 30 TB raid array consisting of maybe 15x 2 TB drives of capacity (plus mirror drives for redundancy). C) maximum fault tolerance I want at least 1 mirror drive per capacity drive (in laymen's terms). So if I start with 10 TB / 5x 2TB of capacity, I suppose I would need another another 5x 2TB drives to be mirrors. So 10 drives total. But I'd also like potential for even more redundancy; with upto 2 additional mirrors per 'capacity drive' (and to be able to add them to the array anytime with ease). D) easy way to monitor drive health I'd like an intuitive interface for managing the raid and monitoring drive health The other systems accessing this network drive will be running Windows, but also the odd Ubuntu and MacOS system as well. Are these objectives attainable? What type of RAID setup do you recommend? What hardware will be required? Also what OS do you think this system should be running? Does it really matter? I'm no network admin - just a long time Windoze user, without much Linux experience. That said, I'm not opposed to a Linux solution if it's easy enough and more practical than a Windows OS for this server. Or maybe something such as Openfiler. Budget should hit the sweet spot for value and performance (hence my preference to use 2TB drives). The biggest focus is storage; aside from that the system just needs to keep the drives running optimally with perhaps 2 or 3 clients accessing / writing files at any given time.   The Archive Storage Engine is not enabled by the default build of MySQL in CentOS/RHEL. I would like to enable it on our CentOS 5.4 server. My initial reaction was to modify the SPEC file for the SRPMS file, but this indicates that this might not be that easy. There's always the option to build from MySQL source, but I would prefer if possible to stay within the RPMS/Yum world. Does anybody have a successful approach to this by using RPMS/SRPMS/Yum? Some patches which makes this work flawless with SRPMS?

• Firefox: non-Vimperator way to do mouseless browsing?

  Is it possible to do efficient browsing with Firefox using only the keyboard (like in Opera)? By efficient I mean something faster than using TAB - this takes far too long. The arrow keys should be for navigation (in Opera it is Shift + arrow key). It can done with the Vimperator add-on, but isn't there a simpler way? Update 2: the closest to Opera's way is to enable caret navigation (F7 toggles this mode). It doesn't jump between links so it is a little bit slower, but the normal navigation (arrow keys, page up, page down, etc.) works and the focus/caret/cursor follows (in contrast to a text editor for page up/down). And text can be selected and copied like in a text editor. The biggest drawback is that in practice it is necessary to switch in and out of caret mode. And there is no indication of which mode is currently active. Update 1: a work-around (proposed by several but is not really what I am looking for) can be used if 3 settings are changed (to make it practical). After these changes the first few letters of a link text can be typed and that link will selected so pressing Enter will open it. Using the work-around the screen will jump around if it is a long page as it does not restrict itself to the current visible page, but it is usable. First settings change: menu Tools/Options/Advanced/tab General/Accessibility/Search for text when I start typing Turn this option on. Second settings change: set option to only go to links; in address bar enter: about:config followed by Enter. Then: press "I'll be careful, I promise", find the line accessibility.typeaheadfind.linksonly, select it and change the value to True by either hitting Enter or Shift+F10/Toggle (accessibility.typeaheadfind.linksonly is on line 11 when I tried). Third settings change: turn off case-sensitivity. Set accessibility.typeaheadfind.casesensitive to 0 (same procedure as for accessibility.typeaheadfind.linksonly, see above. When Enter is pressed a dialog box will appear with the current value. Type 0 and press Enter). To use: type some part of the link. If there are several possibilities use Ctrl+G (or F3) to jump between them. Use Ctrl+Enter to open in a new tab. Platform: Firefox 3.0.6, Windows XP 64 bit SP2.

  I have a PPT presentation of about 400 slides that I periodically update and publish as PDF. The view I publish is the Notes Pages. This worked fine for several years, during which time I was using PPT 2002. I recently upgraded to PPT 2010, and now I find that the PDFs I create are about 25 times bigger than they used to be, and the text in the slides part of the Notes Pages is no longer selectable in Acrobat. According to Why does Powerpoint 2010 print notes pages to PDF as raster images? , the problem is that PPT 2010 is rendering the slides' content as images, which is not what earlier versions of PPT did. The solution offered in that discussion involves Office Automation and VBA, neither of which I know anything about, and it's not clear whether that approach solves the problem of the text in the slides not being selectable in the PDF. Isn't there a simple way to get PPT 2010 to print Notes Pages to PDF the way it did in PPT 2002?

After a number of unsuccessful attempts to compare fields, my current approach is to do comparisons between serial dates instead of calendar dates. I am trying to summarize the data--by DAY--with formulae. CONSIDER: 41021 some data 41021.625 some data 41021.63542 some data 41022 some data 41022.26042 some data 41022.91667 some data 41023 some data 41023.375 some data DESIRED RESULT: 41021 sum of 41021, 41021.625 and 41021.63542 data 41022 sum of 41022, 41022.26042 and 41022.91667 data 41023 sum of 41023 and 41023.375 data In essence, for all instances of SerialDate.SerialTime, SUM data values associated with SerialDate.* regardless of the *.SerialTime for that date. While I can see how to do this by creating additional dates column formatted as =TEXT(<DateField>,"mm/dd/yyyy") I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to handle this 'conversion' in the formula, e.g.SUMIF((TEXT(<dateRange>,"yy/mm/dd"),=(TEXT(<dateField,"yy/mm/dd")),<dataRange> Make sense?   I suspect I'm a bit offtopic with the site mission, but it seems me more fitting for the question than stackoverflow i'm in preparing to create a vm with sensible data (personal use, it will be a web+mail+... appliance of sorts), i'd like to protect the data even with cryptography; the final choice have to be cross-platform for the host basically, I have to choose between guest system-level cryptography (say, dm-crypt or similar) or host level cryptography with truecrypt. do you think that the "truecrypt-volume contained virtualized disks" approach will hit the i/o performance of the vm badly (and therefore dm-crypt like approaches into the vm would be better), or is it doable? I'd like to protect all the guest data, not only my personal data, to be able to suspend the vm freely without worrying for the swap partition, etc

  Can ECC registered RAM 512 MB DDR-400 be used on thin clients - specifically Neoware CA10/CA22? Neoware thin clients (now HP Thin clients e100/e140) have 2 slots for a max of 1 Gb of DDR-400 RAM (184 Pin PC3200). I notice that the price of ECC reg RAM is considerably less than that of non-reg RAM ($10 for ECC reg 512 MB vs $24 for non-ECC reg 512 MB) so this approach is worth it for me to upgrade my memory on numerous thin clients (approx 40). The BIOS is Phoenix E686 and the chipset is VIA 800MHz - 1 Ghz.

• XKB - remap arrow keys and preserve shift behaviour to select text

  I realize arrow key remapping is an old problem, however I cannot seem to find a good solution that lets me select text with SHIFT + remapped keys as I would do with the vanilla arrow keys. For instance, if I remap Caps Lock to ISO_Level3_Shift and set xkb_symbols to read either key <AC08> { [ k, K , Down, Down] }; or key <AC08> { type="THREE_LEVEL", [ k, K , Down ] }; Pressing Shift+CapsLock+K will behave exactly as CapsLock+K (while Shift+Down behaves differently from Down alone). I had somewhat more success using higher level macro utilities and generating keyboard events (i.e. generate both the shift and the arrow keypresses); hoever that approach has a whole set of different problems - often the UI response to a simulated keypress is different from the "real" keypress, and there are performance problems as well - I can type faster than the thing can handle. Tl;dr; how can you shift-select using remapped arrow keys under X?

• Suppress log messages about 3ware disk temperature changes on CentOS?

  I have a number of CentOS 5 servers which use 3ware RAID controllers. These servers are bugging my team with messages about minor temperature changes, like this: Jun 8 12:32:39 HOST smartd[1231]: Device: /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_01], SMART Usage Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 119 to 118 Jun 8 12:32:39 HOST smartd[1231]: Device: /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_03], SMART Usage Attribute: 194 Temperature_Celsius changed from 122 to 121 How can I suppress these messages? According to man smartd.conf : To disable any of the 3 reports, set the corresponding limit to 0. Trailing zero arguments may be omitted. By default, all temperature reports are disabled (´-W 0´). On my systems, smartd is reporting about temperature changes by default. I tried a manual approach. In /etc/smartd.conf, I have the following: /dev/twa0 -d 3ware,1 -a -W 0 /dev/twa0 -d 3ware,3 -a -W 0 But this still does not suppress the messages. Since these messages show up in /var/log/messages, LogWatch is sending unnecessary emails every night.
