• How do I get started on a bigger project?

  Hey guys, Most of the time I have been programming little apps either for myself or for the benifit of learning. Now that my programming skills are considered somewhat intermediate, I was wondering how I would tackle a large programming project. Lets suppose I wanted to make an application that has a lot of features and is intended for the use of others and not just myself; how do I go about planning for such projects? Do I just jump in and start coding the thing or is there some sort of recommended process? Thanks in advance :D

• Eclipse+Subversive- Multiple src paths in a single project each from a separate parts of a single re

  In a nutshell, I would like to have a single eclipse project with multiple src directories each managed by subversive (or subclipse). If the code base were small, I would use several projects. However, the code base is not small (50+ src paths). Does anyone know how to do this with the Subversion plugins for eclipse? All of the src paths derive from modules that in turn have a common point node in the repository. However, the modules are versioned, so I can’t checkout all of them. It looks as though Subclipse and Subversive do not support multiple src paths. Can anyone confirm this? Solutions?

• Accessing an RSS feed in Flex, works when run from Flash Builder 4, but not when the project is onli

  Hey guys, In my Flex 4 app, I access an RSS feed (I'm using http://news.ycombinator.com/rss as a dummy). It works okay when I run it from Flash Builder 4, but if I export the project and upload it, I get the following error when it tries to load the RSS feed: Error #2044: Unhandled securityError:. text=Error #2048: Security sandbox violation: my_website_url cannot load data from http://news.ycombinator.com/rss. What could be causing this error? Shouldn't RSS be able to be accessed from anywhere? Thanks for reading.

  In Visual Studio 2008 when you go to properties of a project (an ASP.NET MVC one at least) you have the option to run an external program. There are three parts for it: the path to the program, the command line options, the working directory. I need to pass the root of my web application as a command line argument. I don't want to hardcode the path in my machine in that directory. Is there some sort of (environment) variable I could use? Background: I'm trying to run UltiDev Cassini because VS' Cassini is 32bit only. I think this is the right way to run it, is it?

• Maven 2: How to package current project version in a WAR file?

  I am using Maven 2 to build my Java project and I am looking for a way to present the current version number of the pom.xml to the user (using a Servlet or JSP for example). As far as I can see, the best way would be that Maven packages the version number as a text file into the WAR. This allows me to read the version from that file and present it the way I want. Does anyone know of a plugin that can do something like that for me? Maybe the WAR plugin can be configured to do so? Or maybe using some other approach all together?

• Is a new thread in a Visual Studio test project aborted when the test ends?

  Hi, i have to do some message exchange with a 3rd party (in a website). When the client posts a page, i start the message exchange. When that doesn't succeed for some reason, i report this to the client by rendering the page with a message. On the background, in a separate thread, i start a process to send abort messages to the 3rd party. I can't do this while the user is waiting for the page to come back, because it might take a few minutes. But in a test project, the test ends when the message to the 3rd party is sent, and after the new thread is started. But it seems that the new thread also ends, when the test is done. Is that normal behaviour? I do start the thread in a new class with a reference to 2 objects from the class which tries to send the message in the first place, may that be a problem?

  Hi all, I am working on an Java assignment for a software design course in my university. It's not really complicated and it includes some classes, interfaces and jUnit test cases. We we're now told we should supply a build.xml file as an input for an ant builder. I have never heard of or used ant before. I also saw Eclipse supports it. My question is - What does build.xml does? How does Eclipse builds my project and why not do the same instead of using ant? And most important - how to create this file with Eclipse? Thanks.

• Is there a convention for organizing the include/exports in a large C++ project ?

  Hello, In a large C++ solution, is there a best/standard way to separate the include files necessary to build an intermediary DLL and the include files which will be used by the DLL clients ? We have grouped all the include files in a folder called Interface (for DLL interface), but there the customers have to either include the Interface folder as a default include folder or type the full name as: #include "ProjectName/Interface/myinterface.h" Wouldn't it be better to create a separate folder called exports where I would create a folder called ProjectName and put the include files there ? So that the customers would be typing: #include "ProjectName/myinterface.h" If I do the thing right above, then should I keep the files within the solution and produce a post build event (I use Visual Studio 2k5) to copy the files into the "export" folder (/ProjectName/) ? Or is it better to just include directly the files from this folder within my project (this is more direct and has less chances to cause maintenance issues ?   Whenever I start a new game, I make a whole bunch of classes that extend my base classes, so: com.blah.Game extends com.iainlobb.Game and has some setup code com.blah.Player extends com.iainlobb.Player, and has some setup code etc Now all I need is a way to generate these classes at the start of the project so I don't have to create each one manually. It will save me at least an hour of faffing around per game. So how do I do it? I normally use FlashDevelop but I also have FlexBuilder 3, or I'm happy to download whatever other software I need (PC). Thanks.

• Know if a Visual Studio Website project is recompiling itself in the background?

  A number of team members update a central ASP.NET dev site (Website project, not a Web application type). Some kinds of changes cause a recompile/rebuild in it. The large website takes a while to recompile and we've noticed it will still seemingly serve out dynamic pages before everything is internally updated. During the site's "gestation" period, our mileage varies while hitting it. Sometimes we get a correct page, sometimes an compilation error page that will eventually be served up without a compilation error, and at other times an unexpected hybrid. Is it possible to query an ASP.NET website application to see if it's currently compiling or rebuilding itself? If so I would write a status page that the team could reference when they're getting weird behaviour, so they would know to wait. Update: Our team often edit files manually on the dev server. For production we'd make pre-compiled pushes. The dev environment is a little more malleable and ever-changing so I'm looking for a solution to reducing the "confusion" there.

  Today I upgraded to Android SDK 2.3 and I also upgraded the Eclipse Plugin Androi Developer Tools 8.0 (from 0.9.9). I also upgraded my Java Development Kit to 1.6_22. Now in Eclipse I get many errors in all my Android projects. The error messages are like: The type java.lang.Object cannot be resolved. It is indirectly referenced from required .class files.   Okay I just started with Django and it's totally different from PHP. I installed Python 2.6 and Django. Both are located in my C drive. C: Django build django docs Python26 I am doing the django site tutorial and when they say to write django-admin.py startproject mysite from my Python command line, I keep getting: Syntax error: invalid syntax >>>django-admin.py startproject mysite FILE "<stdin>", line 1 django-admin.py startproject mysite ^ My django-admin.py is in the django/bin folder. I installed Python via python setup.py. Am I suppose to use my window's CP? When I do that, I get window's can't open a .py file. I thought I was just creating a folder?   I'm considering using the VB6 Common Controls Replacement Project controls and would like to see what other's experiences with them are. Specifically: What do you need to distribute with them? (I assume just the .OCX file) Do I need to register the .ocx file or just include in the app directory? Do these controls depend on any other ocx's? (There is mention, for example in the Progress Bar replacement that it is using COMCTL32.DLL but the .DEP file does not list that DLL. Are they at least as robust as the controls they replace?

  I have a number of interdependent projects in an Eclipse workspace. Eclipse manages dependencies between them within the IDE but I'm starting work on a master build script that will sit in the folder about all the projects (the workspace folder). I haven't decided on if I will use Maven, Gradle or Ant/Ivy tet, but my question is, is there a way so that I can see a build script in the workspace folder in the Project/Package explorer? Currently it only shows me projects, but assuming I decide on an Ant build, I want to be able to see the main build.xml file in this window. I've played around with settings to no avail. Is it possible? If not, should I just set up an external run configuration instead?

• How can I retrieve cookies for webserver A when my project is deployed on webserver B?

  The project is multiple modules, each of them is deployed to a separate webserver. All of them on the same mainframe. (same IP address) I have a main menu where I login and then list all the available modules on all servers. From here I can click and go to any of them modules. I send cookies in the response (when logging in, say Server A), then on Server B (one of the modules) when I want to go back to the main menu, I check the cookies to see if the user is logged in. The problem is, Server B isn't seeing cookies generated by Server A. So each time I return to main menu, the user will be logged out. Is there anyway to store cookies to be used by multiple virtual webservers (on same IP) or any other idea?

• What do you name the "other" kind of view-model in an MVVM project?

  With MVVM, I think of a view-model as a class that provides all the data and commands that a view needs to bind to. But what happens when I have a database entity object, say a Customer, and I want to build a class that shapes or flattens the Customer class for use in a data grid. For example, maybe this special Customer object would have a property TotalOrders, which is actually calculated using a join with a collection of Order entities. My question is, what do I call this special Customer class? In other situations, I'd be tempted to call it a CustomerViewModel, but I feel like "overloading" the notion of a view-model like this would be confusing in an MVVM project. What would you suggest?

• How do I add jars needed to compile a maven project if they were never built with a pom?

  I'm just starting with maven, coming from years of working with Ant. I'm trying a basic task now, building a simple project that requires some libraries from a vendor. I have the jars in src\main\resources\VENDORNAME. When I run mvn compile it fails on compilation saying the libraries don't exist. I can't seem to add these as dependencies because I don't know their version number and as they are proprietary I can't find them in ibiblio or elsewhere. Without these Jars I can't compile my classes. Is there a way to use jars that didn't follow Maven's convention? I might not understand maven correctly, so any guidance is welcome. Much appreciated for any responses.

  Hi, I've adopted a Visual Studio solution that contains a number WiX projects. We build the solution from an MsBuild script to generate the product's installer msi. The problem I'm experiencing is that if I build (and don't rebuild), even if exe's and dll's get updated that need to be put in the installer, the WiX build system doesn't seem to detect this and skips building the installer as it thinks it's already up to date. How do I work out what the dependencies are that are needed to build a WiX project, and how do I tell the Wix build system to watch out for them changing so it knows to build instead of skip?

  hi all I just got finished making my first project in visual studio 2008. what I want to do is put it on a CD and let another person run it. I went to the clean and build and publish and all went well. When I took it to my friends house to put it on her computer..i never got a "download" and "install" screen. We were able to see it and use it on her computer (which is good cuz she doesnt have Visual on her machine) but I wanted her to be able to use it without keeping the CD in the drive. Is there some setup or something I have to do to make my program download and install? The whole shibang was all done with starting a new windows application..and then just adding windows forms to the original. Thanks :)
