  • Parent Thread exiting before Child Threads [python]

    - by crgwbr
I'm using Python in a webapp (CGI for testing, FastCGI for production) that needs to send an occasional email (when a user registers or something else important happens). Since communicating with an SMTP server takes a long time, I'd like to spawn a thread for the mail function so that the rest of the app can finish up the request without waiting for the email to finish sending. I tried using thread.start_new(func, (args)), but the Parent return's and exits before the sending is complete, thereby killing the sending process before it does anything useful. Is there anyway to keep the process alive long enough for the child process to finish?

  • Using concurrently 2 versions of boost

    - by idimba
I'm using RHEL 5.3, which is shipped with gcc 4.1.2 and boost 1.33. There're some features I want, that are missing in the boost 1.33. Therefore the thought was to upgrade to fresh boost release 1.43. Is it possible to use concurrently some header-only library(s) from boost 1.43 and the rest from 1.33? For example I want to use unorded_map, which is missing in boost 1.33. Is it possible to use concurrently binary boost libraries from different releases?

  • how to represent negative number to array of integers ?

    - by stdnoit
I must convert string of 1324312321 to array of integers in java this is fine. I could use integer parseint and string substring method but how do I repesent -12312312 to my original array of integer.. the fact that - is a char / string and convert to array of integer would alter the value ( even though I convert - to integer-equivalent , it would change the rest of 12312312) it must be an array of integers and how should I convert negative numbers and still keeep the same value somehow reminding me of two complements trick but i dont think i need to go down to binary level in my program.. any other trick for doing this? thanks!

  • Issue with css float -- Hindering IE6 from putting div in next line

    - by Bernhard V
Hi, I've got an issue with floating divs in IE6. There's one navigation div on the left and one content div for the rest of the page. They've got the following css values: #navigation { float: left; width: 185px; padding-left: 5px; overflow: auto; height: 100%; } #content { overflow: auto; height: 100%; } In Firefox, IE8, Chrome and Opera, I get scrollbars for the content div when I resize the page to a size where both divs can't fit in as a whole. The navigation div stays in its place. And that is the desired behaviour. But in IE6, there are no scrollbars for the content div. Instead, when the page is getting too small, IE6 simply puts the content div under the navigation div. Do you know any way to hinder IE6 from this behaviour?

  • Backbone.js "model" query

    - by Novice coder
    I'm a learning coder trying to understand this code from a sample MVC framework. The below code is from a "model" file. I've done research on Backbone.js, but I'm still confused as to exactly how this code pull information from the app's database. For example, how are base_url, Model.prototype, and Collection.prototype being used to retrieve information from the backend? Any help would be greatly appreciated. exports.definition = { config : { "defaults": { "title": "-", "description": "-" }, "adapter": { "type": "rest", "collection_name": "schools", "base_url" : "/schools/", } }, extendModel: function(Model) { _.extend(Model.prototype, { // Extend, override or implement Backbone.Model urlRoot: '/school/', name:'school', parse: function(response, options) { response.id = response._id; return response; }, }); return Model; }, extendCollection: function(Collection) { _.extend(Collection.prototype, { // Extend, override or implement Backbone.Collection urlRoot: '/schools/', name: 'schools', }); return Collection; } }

  • reading partially from sockets

    - by nomad.alien
I'm having a little test program that sends a lot of udp packets between client-server-client (ping/pong test). The packets are fixed size on each run(last run is max allowable size of udp packet) I'm filling the packets with random data except for the beginning of each packet that contains the packet number. So I'm only interested to see if I receive all the packets back at the client. I'm using sendto() and recvfrom() and I only read the sizeof(packet_number) (which in this case is an int). What happens to the rest of the data? Does it end up in fairyland (gets discarded)? or does the new packet that arrives gets appended to this "old" data? (using linux)

  • Assign TableView column binding to a specific core-data object in to-many related entity based on se

    - by snown27
How would I assign a column of a TableView to be a specific entry in a Core Data entity that is linked to the NSArrayController via a to-many relationship? For example Entity: MovieEntity Attributes: title(NSString), releaseDate(NSDate) Relationship: posters<-->> PosterEntity Entity:PosterEntity Attributes: imageLocation(NSURL), default(BOOL) Relationships: movie<<--> MovieEntity So I have a three column table that I want to display the Poster, Title, and Release Date attributes in, but as one movie could potentially have several different style's of posters how do I get the poster column to only show the one that's marked default? Since the rest of the table is defined in Interface Builder I would prefer to keep it that way for the sake of keeping the code as clean as possible, but if this can only be done programmatically then I'm all ears. I just wanted to give preference in case there's more than one way to skin a cat, so to speak.

  • Static initialization of a struct with class members

    - by JS Bangs
I have a struct that's defined with a large number of vanilla char* pointers, but also an object member. When I try to statically initialize such a struct, I get a compiler error. typedef struct { const char* pszA; // ... snip ... const char* pszZ; SomeObject obj; } example_struct; // I only want to assign the first few members, the rest should be default example_struct ex = { "a", "b" }; SomeObject has a public default constructor with no arguments, so I didn't think this would be a problem. But when I try to compile this (using VS), I get the following error: error C2248: 'SomeObject::SomeObject' : cannot access private member declared in class 'SomeObject' Any idea why?

  • Threads in PHP.

    - by Muhammad Sajid
Hello.. I am creating a web application using zend, here i create an interface from where user-A can send email to more than one user(s) & it works excellent but it slow the execution time because of which user-A wait too much for the "acknowledged response" ( which will show after the emails have sent. ) In Java there are "Threads" by which we can perform that task (send emails) & it does not slow the rest application. Is there any technique in PHP/Zend just like in Java by which we can divide our tasks which could take much time eg: sending emails. Thanks..

  • are shrink-to-fit table cells possible?

    - by Nano8Blazex
Let's say I have a menu of a prespecified width... I want each menu item to shrink-to-fit with its contents, with the exception of ONE, which then fills up the remaining space in the menu. so like: Fill | item | item | item So far the closest I've come to achieving this effect is by using display:table-cell; in the css code for each menu item. But the problem is unless I define a width for the "item"s, they all expand to take up the same amount of width in the table. Fill | item | item | item | item Is there any way to have the item spaces shrink to fit the item and have the fill just fill up the rest of the div? I might not have asked this very clearly... I'll clarify if needed.

  • Should my web based app be a consumer of my api?

    - by seanbrant
I will be developing a mobile app (iPhone) and a web based app (Django) soon. For the mobile app I will be creating a REST api (most likely using Django) to send data back and forth from phone to server. When I comes time to create the web based version does it make sense to just create it as any other client of the api. In other words both the mobile app and the web app will get there data from an external API over HTTP. Or should the web based app have direct access to the database that the api is using and just get its data that way?

  • What are the latest options in Java logging frameworks?

    - by sanity
This question gets asked periodically, but I've long felt that existing Java logging frameworks were overcomplicated and over-engineered, and I want to see what's new. I have a more critical issue on my current project as we've standardized on JSON as our human-readable data encoding, and most logging frameworks I've seen require XML. I would really rather avoid using JSON for 95% of my apps configuration, and XML for the rest just because of the logging framework (truth be told, I hate XML used for anything other than text markup, its original intended purpose). Are there any hot new Java logging frameworks that are actively maintained, reasonably powerful, have a maven repo, can be reconfigured without restarting your app, and don't tie you to XML?

  • Has anyone used a rails gem for lightbox functionality? If so which ones?

    - by bgadoci
Trying to figure out what is the best solution for using lightbox in rails. I have a set up an application that has projects and posts belong_to project. A post can have multiple photos and I am successfully only displaying the first photo in the photos table in the projects show view for each post. I am now trying to allow the user to view the rest of the photos associated with a post through a lightbox feature. Any idea if there is a rails ready solution for something like this?

  • Alternative to "assign to a function call" in a python

    - by Pythonista's Apprentice
I'm trying to solve this newbie puzzle: I've created this function: def bucket_loop(htable, key): bucket = hashtable_get_bucket(htable, key) for entry in bucket: if entry[0] == key: return entry[1] else: return None And I have to call it in two other functions (bellow) in the following way: to change the value of the element entry[1] or to append to this list (entry) a new element. But I can't do that calling the function bucket_loop the way I did because "you can't assign to function call" (assigning to a function call is illegal in Python). What is the alternative (most similar to the code I wrote) to do this (bucket_loop(htable, key) = value and hashtable_get_bucket(htable, key).append([key, value]))? def hashtable_update(htable, key, value): if bucket_loop(htable, key) != None: bucket_loop(htable, key) = value else: hashtable_get_bucket(htable, key).append([key, value]) def hashtable_lookup(htable, key): return bucket_loop(htable, key) Thanks, in advance, for any help! This is the rest of the code to make this script works: def make_hashtable(size): table = [] for unused in range(0, size): table.append([]) return table def hash_string(s, size): h = 0 for c in s: h = h + ord(c) return h % size def hashtable_get_bucket(htable, key): return htable[hash_string(key, len(htable))] Similar question (but didn't help me): Python: Cannot Assign Function Call

  • Store data in Ruby on Rails without Database

    - by snowmaninthesun
I have a few data values that I need to store on my rails app and wanted to know if there are any alternatives to creating a database table just to do this simple task. Background: I'm writing some analytics and dashboard tools for my ruby on rails app and i'm hoping to speed up the dashboard by caching results that will never change. Right now I pull all users for the last 30 days, and re arange them so I can see the number of new users per day. It works great but takes quite a long time, in reality I should only need to calculate the most recent day and just store the rest of the array somewhere else. Where is the best way to store this array? Creating a database table seems a bit overkill, and i'm not sure that global variables are the correct answer. Is there a best practice for persisting data like this? If anyone has done anything like this before let me know what you did and how it turned out.

  • Need complete picture of virtual adress space

    - by claws
Hello, This image gives a good picture about Virtual Adress space. But it only says half of the story. It only gives complete picture of User Adress space ie.. lower 50% (or 75% in some cases). What about the rest 50% (or 25%) which is occupied by the kernel. I know kernel also has so many different things like kernel modules , device drivers, core kernel itself. There must be some kind of layout right? What is its layout? If you say its Operating System dependent. I would say, there are two major operating systems Windows & Linux. Please give answer for any one these.

  • Automatically registering "commands" for a command line program in python

    - by seandavi
I would like to develop a command-line program that can process and give "help" for subcommands. To be concrete, say I have a single script called "cgent" and I would like to have subcommands "abc", "def", and "xyz" execute and accept the rest of the sys.args for processing by optparse. cgent abc [options] cgent help abc .... All of this is straightforward if I hard-code the subcommand names. However, I would like to be able to continue to add subcommands by adding a class or module (?). This is similar to the idea that is used by web frameworks for adding controllers, for example. I have tried digging through pylons to see if I can recreate what is done there, but I have not unravelled the logic. Any suggestions on how to do this? Thanks, Sean

  • [R] how do I quickly group the time column in a dataframe into intervals?

    - by Derek
Hi, Assuming in R, I have a data.frame with the first column representing the time (as POSIXct). The rest of the columns (e.g., columns 2) are numeric data. I would like to group time into 3-minute intervals. Each interval will the the average of values that falls into that particular interval. Right now, I have a for-loop that iterates through the time column and generate the interval on the fly. I am wondering if there's a more elegant way to accomplish the same thing? Thanks in advance. Derek

  • requireJS : How to structure Javascript for an entire site?

    - by pagewil
I have 3000+ lines of javascript that I need to get into a sensible/maintainable structure. I have chosen to use requireJS as it has been recommend to me by a few people. I have a bunch of variables that are used throughout the application and need to be available everywhere. I also have a bunch of functions that need to be available everywhere. Apart from these two dependencies most of the code can be divided off into their own modules. I am having trouble understanding how to manage my main variables so that if one module of code makes changes to the variables the rest of the JS modules will see that change. I think I need to see a few examples that demonstrate how requireJS is intended to work on a larger scale that the examples in the documentation. If anyone is an experienced requireJS user I would love the hear your tips!

  • c++ - QListWidget

    - by user1889459
I created a working QListWidget with multiple items, but I can't figure out how to make it user-friendly. It looks like this: 1000 1001 1002 ... But I want it to look like this, where firt 4 numbers have a meaning, while all the rest info is just for user. 1000 Name LastName and some other helpful info 1001 tom jeff smallville 1002 ming vase, 1992 ... For example, this line fotoId = ui->devices->currentItem()->text().toInt(); should give me same result in both cases.

  • python - selenium script syntax error

    - by William Hawkes
Okay, I used selenium to test some automation, which I got to work. I did an export of the script for python. When I tried to run the python script it generated, it gave me a "SyntaxError: invalid syntax" error message. Here's the python script in question: from selenium import selenium import unittest, time, re class WakeupCall(unittest.TestCase): def setUp(self): self.verificationErrors = [] self.selenium = selenium("localhost", 4444, "*chrome", "http://the.web.site") self.selenium.start() def test_wakeup_call(self): sel = self.selenium sel.open("/index.php#deposit") sel.wait_for_page_to_load("30000") sel.click("link=History") sel.wait_for_page_to_load("30000") try: self.failUnless(sel.is_text_present("key phrase number 1.")) except AssertionError, e: self.verificationErrors.append(str(e)) The last line is what generated the "SyntaxError: invalid syntax" error message. A "^" was under the comma. The rest of the script goes as follows: def tearDown(self): self.selenium.stop() self.assertEqual([], self.verificationErrors) if name == "main": unittest.main()

  • related categories - database design

    - by mike
Hello! I'm looking for a little database design advice... I have a spreadsheet with a few columns in it. Column 1 being a list of categories and the rest being related categories(to the category in column 1). I'm trying to figure out what the best way to setup the tables would be... My thought so far is to have a table that just lists the categories then have a table with 2 columns that holds the id of the category and the id of a related category.... Would this be the best way to do this? Any better ideas?

  • CS Education, where was it? Where is it now? Where is it going?

    - by CheesePls
I'm planning on doing research into Computer Science education for my senior project and I could think of no better group of people to consult than the SO community. So, what do you think about the state of CS education in the United States (and the rest of the world, though I had planned on focusing on the US)? What do you feel are necessary topics? What topics are superfluous? Objects first vs. Objects early vs. Objects later? ALSO, if anyone has or knows of any blogs, studies, etc., those would be very helpful as well.

  • .NET Regular Expressions - Shorter match

    - by Xavier
Hi Guys, I have a question regarding .NET regular expressions and how it defines matches. I am writing: var regex = new Regex("<tr><td>1</td><td>(.+)</td><td>(.+)</td>"); if (regex.IsMatch(str)) { var groups = regex.Match(str).Groups; var matches = new List<string>(); for (int i = 1; i < groups.Count; i++) matches.Add(groups[i].Value); return matches; } What I want is get the content of the two following tags. Instead it returns: [0]: Cell 1</td><td>Cell 2</td>... [1]: Last row of the table Why is the first match taking </td> and the rest of the string instead of stopping at </td>?
