  • `xcalib -i -a` controls only one of two screens - can it control both?

    I am using 2 screens, and wish to invert the colors on both of them without using compiz (I'm using gnome shell). I can use xcalib -invert -alter as suggested in this question, but it only inverts one of the screens. Is there a way to specify both of them, or even which of them, using xcalib? Is there another way? With xcalib, you can specify which screen to alter with the -d (-display) or -s (-screen) options, but alas, X seems to be aware of just one screen: when I use the w command I only see one (the usual ":0") ps: this question was originally posted by k0pernikus as a comment here.

    I've subclassed DropDownList to add functionality specific to my application: public class MyDropDownList : DropDownList { ... } ... then referenced it in Web.Config, which is where I figure things start to go wrong: <pages theme="Main"> <controls> <add tagPrefix="bob" tagName="MyDropDownList" src="~/Components/MyDropDownList.cs" /> </controls> </pages> my reference to it does not work: <tr><td>Category</td> <td><bob:MyDropDownList runat="server" ID="Category"... /> and my best clue is the complier error message: "The file 'src' is not a valid [sic] here because it doesn't expose a type." I figure I'm misapplying knowledge of how to create a Web User Control here. What I want to be able to do is refer to this control on an ASP.NET page just like I would the parent DropDownList. Refactoring back into a Web User Control that contains a DropDownList is not desirable, because I want to apply a RequiredFieldValidator to it.

  • Should I use mod_wsgi embedded mode if I have full control of Apache?

    I'm managing a bunch of sites and applications in a shared hosting, using Django via mod_wsgi. I had planned to use daemon mode from the beginning (to avoid restart problems), but ended up purchasing a plan that allows me to run a dedicated Apache instance. I kept using daemon mode for convenience, but I'm afraid it's consuming more server resources than it should (I have different projects for each site, each with its own process and process group), so I'm considering switching to embedded mode. Would that be a sensible thing to do? I'd still be able to restart Apache anytime I need to, and I wouldn't need so many child processes and sockets (so I hope the resource usage would decrease). But I'm unsure whether or not doing so would make it more difficult to manage those sites (if I need to update one, I have to restart all) or maybe the applications won't be properly isolated from one another. Are these problems really significant (or only a minor nuisance), are there other drawbacks I coudn't foresee? I'm looking for advice in any aspect of this setup - mainainability, performance, security etc. Tips for improving the current setup are also welcome (I know how to correctly configure a basic mod_wsgi setup, but I'm clueless about sensible values for threads, processes etc).

  • Understanding the 'High Performance' meaning in Extreme Transaction Processing

    Despite my previous blogs entries on SOA/BPM and Identity Management, the domain where I'm the most passionated is definitely the Extreme Transaction Processing, commonly called XTP.I came across XTP back to 2007 while I was still FMW Product Manager in EMEA. At that time Oracle acquired a company called Tangosol, which owned an unique product called Coherence that we renamed to Oracle Coherence. Beside this innovative renaming of the product, to be honest, I didn't know much about it, except being a "distributed in-memory cache for Extreme Transaction Processing"... not very helpful still.In general when people doesn't fully understand a technology or a concept, they tend to find some shortcuts, either correct or not, to justify their lack-of understanding... and of course I was part of this category of individuals. And the shortcut was "Oracle Coherence Cache helps to improve Performance". Excellent marketing slogan... but not very meaningful still. By chance I was able to get away quickly from that group in July 2007* at Thames Valley Park (UK), after I attended one of the most interesting workshops, in my 10 years career in Oracle, delivered by Brian Oliver. The biggest mistake I made was to assume that performance improvement with Coherence was related to the response time. Which can be considered as legitimus at that time, because after-all caches help to reduce latency on cached data access, hence reduce the response-time. But like all caches, you need to define caching and expiration policies, thinking about the cache-missed strategy, and most of the time you have to re-write partially your application in order to work with the cache. At a result, the expected benefit vanishes... so, not very useful then?The key mistake I made was my perception or obsession on how performance improvement should be driven, but I strongly believe this is still a common problem to most of the developers. In fact we all know the that the performance of a system is generally presented by the Capacity (or Throughput), with the 2 important dimensions Speed (response-time) and Volume (load) :Capacity (TPS) = Volume (T) / Speed (S)To increase the Capacity, we can either reduce the Speed(in terms of response-time), or to increase the Volume. However we tend to only focus on reducing the Speed dimension, perhaps it is more concrete and tangible to measure, and nicer to present to our management because there's a direct impact onto the end-users experience. On the other hand, we assume the Volume can be addressed by the underlying hardware or software stack, so if we need more capacity (scale out), we just add more hardware or software. Unfortunately, the reality proves that IT is never as ideal as we assume...The challenge with Speed improvement approach is that it is generally difficult and costly to make things already fast... faster. And by adding Coherence will not necessarily help either. Even though we manage to do so, the Capacity can not increase forever because... the Speed can be influenced by the Volume. For all system, we always have a performance illustration as follow: In all traditional system, the increase of Volume (Transaction) will also increase the Speed (Response-Time) as some point. The reason is simple: most of the time the Application logics were not designed to scale. As an example, if you have a while-loop in your application, it is natural to conceive that parsing 200 entries will require double execution-time compared to 100 entries. If you need to "Speed-up" the execution, you can only upgrade your hardware (scale-up) with faster CPU and/or network to reduce network latency. It is technically limited and economically inefficient. And this is exactly where XTP and Coherence kick in. The primary objective of XTP is about designing applications which can scale-out for increasing the Volume, by applying coding techniques to keep the execution-time as constant as possible, independently of the number of runtime data being manipulated. It is actually not just about having an application running as fast as possible, but about having a much more predictable system, with constant response-time and linearly scale, so we can easily increase throughput by adding more hardwares in parallel. It is in general combined with the Low Latency Programming model, where we tried to optimize the network usage as much as possible, either from the programmatic angle (less network-hoops to complete a task), and/or from a hardware angle (faster network equipments). In this picture, Oracle Coherence can be considered as software-level XTP enabler, via the Distributed-Cache because it can guarantee: - Constant Data Objects access time, independently from the number of Objects and the Coherence Cluster size - Data Objects Distribution by Affinity for in-memory data grouping - In-place Data Processing for parallel executionTo summarize, Oracle Coherence is indeed useful to improve your application performance, just not in the way we commonly think. It's not about the Speed itself, but about the overall Capacity with Extreme Load while keeping consistant Speed. In the future I will keep adding new blog entries around this topic, with some sample codes experiences sharing that I capture in the last few years.   • How can I get my mysqld-swamped CPU under control?

    I was AFK for about 24 hours and came back to find gnome-system-monitor saying all four CPU cores on my laptop were running at full throttle. mysqld is taking up more than one full core; when I tried to end the process, it restarted with a new PID. Then there's ksoftirqd/0-3, which apparently has something to do with interrupts, but I can't tell from Google what I'm supposed to do with those four particular processes. They're taking up a quarter or more of my processor cycles. Then there's Chrome, but I can probably handle that on my own -- how do I cool down the other processes giving me problems?

  • Scheduler with Asp Mvc

    Hi, I want to use a Scheduler like Telerik Scheduler in my Mvc project. The problem is that the Scheduler is a Asp.Net WebForm control. For this reason, I must create a WebForm page in my Mvc project to put the Scheduler control. When I show the page, it work fine to render the layout of the control but if I try to interact with it; click for change date, change to day view to week view, the control don't change. I know that postback doesn't work in mvc project but does it work in a WebForm page in a Mvc project? If it doesn't work, it is the reason why when I try to interact with the control, the control don't respond. I think it's because the postback don't work and the Scheduler use 100 % Databinding where when I change date, the postback don't contain any data that I have changed and for this reason, the control can't change is layout. Have you any ideas about postback with WebForm in mvc project? What type of design can I adopt? (Two differents projets: One for my Scheduler with WebForm and another for all the rest of my website in Mvc project) Any other control easily to use with Scheduler? Tips and tricks when needing both WebForm control and Mvc control in Mvc project? Thank you very much.

I sometimes notice i broke a test or a feature and overlooked it for a few weeks so i may go back a month or two and see if the feature or test is broken and trace down the week i broke it. Then find what change did it. On a long term project over the span of a year. Do you actually go back 6+ months and if so why?

  • What exactly can "Full Control" with SharePoint Designer accomplish?

    I've been brought in as an intern to develop a SharePoint site. My team won't authorize the budget for Visual Studio and I don't have physical or remote access to the SharePoint server (running Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 a.k.a. WSS) on the back-end. So what exactly can I do? I'm a pretty decent programmer when it comes to web technologies like PHP, JS and the obvious HTML and CSS. In an environment like this locked-down SharePoint though, I'm stumped trying to figure out how much control I have with MS's definition of "Full Control". If I figured out a way to write some C#, I'm pretty sure I could handle my own, but as I said no Visual Studio for me. Any good ideas of features that people will use on a site built with the limited functionality of WSS and SharePoint Designer with "Full Control"? Can I somehow manipulate the default Web Parts into something cool or useful? Are there Ajax tricks I can do to accomplish something on the back-end? Thanks in advance, I'm new to StackOverflow and very anxious to get involved here!

  • `DesignMode` in subcontrols is not set correctly?

    I have a compound control contains nested controls. The problem i am facing is that control read properties from a global setting class which is static and intern read from setting file. To stop individual control from accessing configuration in design mode i added check in each control. If(!DesignMode){ ... //Initialize properties e.g. prop = AppConfig.GetProperty("prop1"); } The problem is that individual control work fine when open in VS. But when i open top control containing nested control i get error by VS designer. The error is that in a nested control DesignMode=false for some reason. I also created a test app and created a simple control within another control to test if there is a problem with VS but it seem to work correctly for any depth of controls. I dont even know how to debug this. For now i comment out the property initializing code and build it and then open designer and there uncomment it and build it again to run it. Did anyone came across this problem or is there any way to fix it.

The code below adds the controls: TextBox tb = new TextBox(); tb.Text = quest.Value; tb.ID = quest.ShortName.Replace(" ", ""); ((PlaceHolder)e.Item.FindControl("ph_QuestionInput")).Controls.Add(tb); I am using the following code to retrieve the values that have been entered into the TextBox: foreach (ListViewDataItem di in lv_Questions.Items) { int QuestionId = Convert.ToInt32(((HiddenField)di.FindControl("hf_QuestionId")).Value); Question quest = dc.Questions.Single(q => q.QuestionId == QuestionId); TextBox tb = ((TextBox)di.FindControl(quest.ShortName.Replace(" ",""))); //tb is always null! } But it never finds the control. I've looked at the source code for the page and the control i want has the id: ctl00_cphContentMiddle_lv_Questions_ctrl0_Numberofacres For some reason when I look at the controls in the ListViewDataItem it has the ClientID: ctl00_cphContentMiddle_lv_Questions_ctrl0_ctl00 Why would it be changing Numberofacres to ctl00? Is there any way to work around this? UPDATE: Just to clarify, I am databinding my ListView in the Page_Init event. I then create the controls in the ItemBound event for my ListView. But based on what @Womp and MSDN are saying the controls won't actually be created until after the Load event (which is after the Page_Init event) and therefore are not in ViewState? Does this sound correct? If so am I just SOL when it comes to retrieving the values in my dynamic controls from my OnClick event?

    In SQL Server Reporting Services I have a report which has a list control which groups on currency. Within the list control I display the detailed rows of all records filtered to those with a value = £500. i.e. the top earners. However for each row I need to calculate the percentage of its amount over the total of the entire dataset. Because I am filtering it I can't use Sum(Fields!Amount.Value) as that only sums the data after filtering, so I am trying a conditional sum over the entire dataset, but am struggling with the correct condition e.g =100.00*Fields!Amount.Value/Sum((IIf(Fields!Currency.Value = "£", Fields!Amount.Value, CDec(0))),"DataSet") So where the hardcoded currency symbol is I need to access the current value of currency for the list control, but because my sum is scoped at dataset level any field access is dataset level. Ideally I'd like something like the following, otherwise any other ideas on how to solve this problem. =100.00*Fields!Amount.Value/Sum((IIf(Fields!Currency.Value = myListControl.Value, Fields!Amount.Value, CDec(0))),"DataSet") In fact, thinking about it, it would work if I just could access the row level data at that point, but how to do that when its at dataset scope within the sum statement? Hope that makes sense, any help appreciated.

    One of the things that I've just come to accept is that the designers of Windows 8 and I think very differently.It'll take a long time to convince me that shutting down the computer is a "setting". Even after using Windows 8 for quite a while now, I still find that I struggle nearly every day, just trying to do things that I previously knew how to do. That's just not a good thing.Today I decided to create a system image as I hadn't made one lately. I started in Control Panel looking for Backup options. That yielded nothing except programs that wanted to "Save backup copies of my files with file history". I thought "oh well, let's just try the new search options". I hit the Windows key and typed "Backup". No, nothing came up there either.I searched again all over the Control Panel options to no avail.So it was time to hit Google again. Once again, clearly lots of people used to know how to do this and have been trying to work out where this option went.The first trick is that there are a bunch of Control Panel options that don't appear in the Control Panel. In the address bar at the top, if you click on Control Panel, you'll find there is an option that says "All Control Panel Options". That is curious given that's where I thought I was when I opened Control Panel. No hint is given on that screen that there are a bunch of hidden options. None the less, I then checked out "all" the options.The option that you need to create a system image in Windows 8 turns out to be the "Windows 7 File Recovery" option that appears in this extended list. Why does it say "Windows 7" when it's for "Windows 8" as well and I'm running "Windows 8"? Why do I have to choose an option that says "File Recovery" to create a system image backup?<sigh>But at least I've recorded it here for the next time I forget where to find it.

Google's guidelines suggested to me that this would be enough for Google to recognise our page as the canonical one and that one as the duplicate, and thus to show our page in SERPs. However, the opposite has happened - if you search for the page's title you'll see the duplicate page shows up but ours doesn't. How can we prevent this? Since the author 'owns' the duplicate page on zcommunications.org she can edit the HTML body, but not the <head>.

    Is there any way I can embed the images within my exe (as resource?) and use it in generated HTML ? Here are the requirements: A. I want to show dynamic HTML content (e.g. using webBrowser control, VS 2008, VB .Net, winForm desktop application) B. I want to generate the HTML on-the-fly using XML and XSL (file1.xml or file2.xml transformed by my.xsl) C. The HTML may contain IMG tags (file1.gif and or file2.gif according to the xml+xsl transformation) and here comes the complicated one: D. All these files (file1.xml, file2.xml, my.xsl, file1.gif, file2.gif) should be embedded in one exe file. I guess the XML and XSL can be embedded resources, and I can read them as stream, but what ways do I have to reference the image within the HTML ? <IMG src="???" /> I do not want to use absolute path and external files. If the image files are resources, can I use relative path? Relative to what? (I can use BASE tag, and then what?) Can I use stream as in email messages? If so, where can I find the format I need to use? http://www.websiteoptimization.com/speed/tweak/inline-images/ are browser dependent. What is the browser used by webBrowser control? IE? what version? Does it matter if I use GIF or JPG or BMP (or any other image format) for the images? Does it matter if I use mshtml library and not the regular webBrowser control? The problem is everyone can access that. I have a web interface, e.g. http://localhost/adminm that is protected with htaccess and password. Now I don't want separate .htaccess and .htpasswd for /backups, and I don't want a second password prompt when a user clicks on /backups in the web interface. Is there any way to use same .htaccess and .htpasswd for the backups directory?

  • Why wouldn't an embedded silverlight control work in a page?

    Hi, I have a silverlight application project in my solution. The other project is a web application project that has a .xap file in ClientBin. When I created the silverlight project, it asked if I wanted the asp.net application to host it (and I said yes). In the root directory, there is a test page for the silverlight control. That loads the control. In another directory, I insert the SAME asp markup to get the silverlight control to launch again. Nothing happens. Why would the silverlight launch on one page and not on the other? Can people help point me to documentation about dependencies that I might not know about? I've put a reference to Silverlight.js on the page as well.   • How are developers using source control, I am trying to find the most efficient way to do source con

    I work in a group of 4 .Net developers. We rarely work on the same project at the same time but it does happen from time to time.We use TFS for source control. My most recent example is a project I just placed into production last night that included 2 WCF services and a web application front end. I worked out of a branch called "prod" because the application is brand new and has never seen the light of day. Now that the project is live, I need to branch off the prod branch for features, bugs, etc... So what is the best way to do this? Do I simple create a new branch and sort of archive the old branch and never use it again? Do I branch off and then merge my branch changes back into the prod branch when I want to deploy to production? And what about the file and assembly version. They are currently at 1.0.0.0. When do they change and why? If I fix a small bug, which number changes if any? If I add a feature, which number changes if any? What I am looking for is what you have found to be the best way to efficiently manage source control. Most places I have worked always seem to bang heads with the source control system in on way or another and I would just like to find out what you have found that works the best.

  • How to control messages to the same port from different emitters?

    Scene: A company has many factories X, each emits a message to the same receive port in a Biztalk server Y; if all messages are processed without much delay, each will trigger an outgoing message to another system Z. Problem: Sometimes a factory loses its connection for a half-day or more and, when the connection is reestablished, thousands of messages get emitted. Now, the messages still get processed well by Y (Biztalk can easily handle the load) but system Z can't handle the flood and may lock up and severely delay the processing of all other messages from the other X. What is the solution? Creating multiple receive locations that permits us to pause one X or another would lose us information if the factory isn't smart enough to know whether the message was received or not. What is the basic pattern to apply in Biztalk for this problem? Would some throttling parameters help to limit the flow from any one X? I would prefer this last one since I can be confident that the message box will remember any failures, which could then be resumed.

  • Can turning off drm_kms_helper polling affect screen brightness control?

    I have a Samsung R430 notebook that has been running Ubuntu for close to a year, now. Since I've upgrated to Maverick, I've been dealing with little, but increasingly annoying issues, that put my faith to question. The first one, a CPU-intensive set of drm_kms_helper, made me compile my own kernel and set polling to off just so I could move my mouse without frequent stuttering. That led me to dealing with a screen that gets dimmer and dimmer after each sleep/wake-up cycle, which eventually leads me to reboot. Since I have seen some KMS and brightness related bugs around, I was wondering if it is a definite cause for my problem. If so, has there been any advance on the excessive polling issue for those of us plagued by it?
