• How to test for secure SMTP mail service on a mail server

  I'm working on a project to auto-configure a user's email server settings in Java. I am extracting the mail server from his email address and looking up the MX records of that mail server using the DirContext class with com.sun.jndi.dns.DnsContextFactory. Then I'm opening a Socket to each server and testing them using a HELO command and checking the responses. My problem is that this works only when I test it with the unsecure SMTP port 25. How can I use it with the secure port 465? I tried using Secure Sockets by using SSLSocketFactory sslsocketfactory = (SSLSocketFactory)SSLSocketFactory.getDefault(); SSLSocket socket = (SSLSocket)sslsocketfactory.createSocket(mailserver, STANDARD_SMTP_PORT); But all connections get a timeout exception as follows alt1.gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com. java.net.ConnectException: Operation timed out Please help.

• Strange CSS Positioning issue with a fader on a responsive site

  I'm developing a prototype responsive wordpress theme version of my homepage. I'm running into issues with the fader on the homepage. http://dev.epicwebdesign.ca/epicblog/ When the image switches, it uses position:absolute to overlay the pictures, then goes back to position:relative. I need to make the absolute be relative to the bottom left corner of the menu instead of the top left corner of #wrap so it doesn't overlap. I tried putting it in a container div like this: http://wiki.orbeon.com/forms/doc/contributor-guide/browser#TOC-Absolutely-positioned-box-inside-a-box-with-overflow:-auto-or-hidden but that doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? There are major CSS compatibility issues in IE, try it in chrome. It should look similar to http://epicwebdesign.ca. When the browser window is shrunk horizontially, the whole theme compensates.

• Django 1.2 crash course needed

  I know Python but I've never used Django. What do I need to know about Django 1.2 to port my typical PHP CRUD web application in one weekend? (Yes I've read Joel Spolsky's Netscape article :-)) I'm reading this tutorial right now and it's excellent. I'm already playing around with inspectdb to generate my models from the existing schema. I'm planning to use the following features of Django this weekend: Fragment caching Static asset versioning (for far future expires) Schema migrations (or whatever they're called in Django) Auto-admin (and customize it later) The test framework ...other stuff I probably don't know about yet I'm familiar with all these concepts in other languages/frameworks, except for the ORM which I've never used. I know SQL pretty well though. Any links, sage bits of advice, gotchas, stuff not mentioned in the (excellent) tutorial/docs, or stuff that is mentioned but warrants repeating == very welcome.   Im trying to make a table row work as a link to another view in my mvc website. Instead of using the standard "Details" link provided by the auto generated table list, I would like to use the table row as a link to the "Details" view instead. So somehow I need to make the row work as a link. Each rom has a unique id that I need to pass on to the controller method. I have tried different solutions but noting happens when I press on the table row...   In order to create a “destination” auto filter input field on our website, I need a data source that provides a hierarchical data set of Region, Country, County/State, City and Town (plus an area like the Peak District National Park if at all possible) I know sites like Trip Advisor and Facebook seem to have very robust datasets for this. When you type, it brings up a match list with the hierarchy displayed (e.g. if you type Boston you get 6 results as there are multiply places called Boston – the hierarchy allows you to pick the correct option) There are many data sources out there but they either lack hierarchy or do not seem to be easily updatable or complete. I had expected this to be an easy task given the amount of site that have a destination or location autofill field.   If I have a strongly typed data table with a column for values of type Int32, and this column allows nulls, then I'll get an exception if I do this for a row where the value is null: int value = row.CustomValue; Instead I need to do this: if (!row.IsCustomValueNull()) { int value = row.CustomValue; // do something with this value } Ideally I would like to be able to do this: int? value = row.CustomValue; Of course I could always write my own method, something like GetCustomValueOrNull; but it'd be preferable if the property auto-generated for the column itself simply returned a nullable.   Is it possible to create a discoverable network resource in .NET? What I would like to acheive is a means of auto discovery for applications that run on a private network. The architecture will be similar to a client / server application, however the server could be any computer on the network. While the client would not be aware of the specific IP address that would be the server. I assume I would need some form of multicast, however not having used multicasting before I don't even know where to start.   All: I want to use kdiff to merge all files with a certain suffix (say *.c, *.h) and I want to do two things (turn off premerge and use internal:other) for all files with another suffix (say *.mdl). The purpose of this is to allow me to employ a type of 'clobber merge' for a specific file type (ie: un-mergable files like configurations, auto-generated C, models, etc..) In my .hgrc I've tried: [merge-tools] kdiff3= clobbermerge=internal:other clobbermerge.premerge = False [merge-patterns] **.c = kdiff3 **.h = kdiff3 **.mdl = clobbermerge but it still triggers kdiff3 for all files. Thoughts? An extension of this would be to perform a 'clobber merge' on a directory - but once the syntax is clear for a file suffix, the dir should be easy.

  Hey, What SQL query would I have to use if I want to get the results from a table 'messages' but exclude rows that have the value in 'messages_view' where field messages.message=messages_view.id AND messages.deleted=1 AND messages_view.user=$somephpvariable In more laymen terms, I have a messages table with each message denoted by an 'id' as well as a messages_view table connected with a 'message' field. I want to get the rows in message that are not deleted (comes from messages_view) for a specific 'user'. 'deleted'=1 when the message is deleted. • Can you create a "superset" target in Xcode ?

  For the purposes of unit testing I'd like to create an iPhone project target in Xcode that includes all of the release application files, plus some additional files containing code useful for UI unit testing. I can do this by duplicating the original application target; however, the problem with this is that every time I add a new source file to the app target, I need to also add it to the UnitTestUI target. It's not a big deal, just inconvenient to always remember to add files to both targets. Is there some way to set up a dependency so that every file added to the original app target is also auto added the unit test target?

• Can GraphViz be used for a graph editing GUI?

  I am creating an application which will allow a developer to create a program flow-chart by selecting pre-defined functions from a ToolBox (which will show up as small graphical elements). In other words, developer will select one or more pre-defined functions (graphical elements) from ToolBox and drag-drop on the main work area. The application will then, based on the flow of functions selected, will auto-generate ready-to-compile-code. I looked a GraphViz, but am not sure whether it can be used to create a GUI IDE for editing graphical elements. I am looking for a functionality similart to Microsoft Visio, where users can add/remove/drag-drop/ various shapes to create a diagram. Does GraphViz fit in here? If yes, can you direct me to some examples showing how to do it? If GraphViz cannot be used, what are the other open source/free components available? I am intending to build the final application in .Net.

  I want to write web app with client Javascript and back-end server (Python). Client needs data from server frequently in AJAX way. Data in DB, and expensive to load for each request. However, in desktop app I would just load data from DB once to memory and then access it. In web app - the server code runs each time for request so I can't do it (each run has to load from DB to memory again). How can this work? Can a single process run on server or do I have to use something different here? An example is like auto-complete here on stackoverflow for tags - how is it implemented in the server for fast caching/loading?

  [Since asking this question, I've found: http://www.cs.unc.edu/~gb/blog/2007/02/11/ctypes-tricks/ which gives a good answer.] I just wrote a __str__ method for a ctype-generated Structure class 'foo' thus: def foo_to_str(self): s = [] for i in foo._fields_: s.append('{}: {}'.format(i[0], foo.\_\_getattribute__(self, i[0]))) return '\n'.join(s) foo.\_\_str__ = foo_to_str But this is a fairly natural way to produce a __str__ method for any Structure class. How can I add this method directly to the Structure class, so that all Structure classes generated by ctypes get it? (I am using the h2xml and xml2py scripts to auto-generate ctypes code, and this offers no obvious way to change the names of the classes output, so simply subclassing Structure, Union &c. and adding my __str__ method there would involve post-processing the output of xml2py.)

  As you'll no-doubt be able to tell momentarily, I have little knowledge of the programming world. That being said, here goes.... In this scenario, there's a Java-based game that has a map of the game world oriented in an X, Y coordinate tile system. Some of the grid tiles are player cities, some are non-player locations. The game runs inside a frame in the browser, the X, Y coordinate map feature is one optional view, and the entire map is not available to view at any one time. Each grid tile has an "Onclick" event and an "Onmouseover" event. The mouseover event is a tooltip, the click event is something called a "modal" that has information specific to that tile. What I'd like to find out is: How can I poll all the grid tiles' "modal" information using some kind of script or other auto-running polling feature?

• Getting Started with Fluent NHibernate

  I'm trying to get into using Fluent NHibernate, and I have a couple questions. I'm finding the documentation to be lacking. I understand that Fluent NHibernate / NHibernate allows you to auto-generate a database schema. Do people usually only do this for Test/Dev databases? Or is that OK to do for a production database? If it's ok for production, how do you make sure that you're not blowing away production data every time you run your app? Once the database schema is already created, and you have production data, when new tables/columns/etc. need to be added to the Test and/or Production database, do people allow NHibernate to do this, or should this be done manually? Is there any REALLY GOOD documentation on Fluent NHibernate? (Please don't point me to the wiki because in following along with the "Your first project" code building it myself, I was getting run-time errors because they forget to tell you to add a reference.
