  • Equivalent of libwww-perl in .NET or Java

    I have written a crawler in Perl awhile back and it was super simple giving the high-level capability of libwww-perl. It is so straight forward in fact, it can take the raw HTML response of one request, and create the next HTTP request for you from the FORMs on that page (as in it will parse the HTML for you). Does anyone know any library like this on .NET or Java? Selenium is out of question because it requires the browser to be open, which we cannot accommodate in our implementation)

  • Perl equivalent to Java's "throws" clause

    Is there a way in Perl to declare that a method can throw an error (or die)? EDIT: What interests me the most is a way to get the compiler or IDE to tell me I have an unchecked exception somewhere in my code. I always loved how in Java, a method could handle an Exception and/or throw it. The method signature allows to put "throws MyException", so a good IDE/compiler would know that if you use said method somewhere in your code, you'd have to check for the Exception or declare your function to "throws" the Exception further. I'm unable to find something alike in Perl. A collegue of mine wrote a method which "dies" on incorrect input, but I forget to eval-if($@) it... offcourse the error was only discovered while a user was running the application. (offcourse I doubt if there is any existing IDE that could find these kind of things for Perl, but atleast perl -cw should be able to, no?)

  • Is there a Java equivalent to libevent?

    I've written a high-throughput server that handles each request in its own thread. For requests coming in it is occasionally necessary to do RPCs to one or more back-ends. These back-end RPCs are handled by a separate queue and thread-pool, which provides some bounding on the number of threads created and the maximum number of connections to the back-end (it does some caching to reuse clients and save the overhead of constantly creating connections). Having done all this, though, I'm beginning to think an event-based architecture would be more efficient. In searching around I haven't found any equivalents to libevent for Java, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place? Mina-statemachine from Apache was the closest thing I found, but it looks more verbose than I need and there's no real release available. Any suggestions?

  • Rails equivalent of respond_to |format| with a straight render

    I'm working with ActiveResource a lot so my service models are only using XML. Thus, I have no need for a respond_to block, I literally just render :xml => @model I can't however figure out how to render a 404 header using this. I've had to resort to respond_to, which I think adds a few unnecessary method calls. Here's what I'm using: respond_to do |format| if (record_found) render :xml => @some_record else format.xml{ head :not_found } end end but I just want something like render :xml => head :not_found which doesn't work. Can anyone tell me the proper syntax?

    I'm doing a project in Python (3.2) for which I need to compare user defined objects. I'm used to OOP in Java, where one would define a compareTo() method in the class that specifies the natural ordering of that class, as in the example below: public class Foo { int a, b; public Foo(int aa, int bb) { a = aa; b = bb; } public int compareTo(Foo that) { // return a negative number if this < that // return 0 if this == that // return a positive number if this > that if (this.a == that.a) return this.b - that.b; else return this.a - that.a; } } I'm fairly new to classes/objects in Python, so I'd like to know what is the "pythonic" way to define the natural ordering of a class?

  • Netstat -ban (or -oan) equivalent in C#

    I'd like to know if a particular process is using a given port, i.e. netstat -ban. I came across using IPGlobalProperties to get the list of active connections, but this doesn't seem to include process information. It would be nice if there exists some class in C# that lets me do this programmatically. Ideally, I wouldn't have to pipe the cmd shell Process output. Thanks in advance.

  • Why are there so many data centres in Texas?

    I've been searching for online hosting recently and have noticed a high concentration of hosting providers in Texas. Just wondering why this is? It couldn't be possibly be because of temperature (I don't think Texas is a particularly cool place to be) or maybe power is cheaper in Texas vs the rest of the States? Or maybe it's just there are laws in place which give hosting providers tax breaks? Would be very interested to find out.

    Recently, I found an interesting Wiki/CMS/Database hybrid called Wagn, where the most important unit of information is the 'Card'. That terminology immediately made me think of Hypercard. As expected, there is some "Hypercard-ness" in that application. Do you know of other web applications/frameworks with that "Hypercard-ness" thing, or if its successor still must be invented? Note: I insist on web applications because I already know the desktop ones.

    I can't seem to get an animated transition between line graphs when I pass in a new set of data.   • ASP Calendar control returns Date type but I need Datetime to insert into SQL Server 2005

    Hello, I am using a ASP Calendar control to insert a datetime value into a field to be part of an insert to a SQL Server 2005 db table. I get the following error when i submit the form to server and try to insert into table: [ArgumentException: The version of SQL Server in use does not support datatype 'date'.] Seems like Calendar control returns a Date type value. How could i make the Calendar control return a Datetime value instead? I know now that SQL Server 2005 does not support Date type fields.

  • Is yield break equivalent to returning Enumerable<T>.Empty from a method returning IEnumerable<T>

    These two methods appear to behave the same to me public IEnumerable<string> GetNothing() { return Enumerable.Empty<string>(); } public IEnumerable<string> GetLessThanNothing() { yield break; } I've profiled each in test scenarios and I don't see a meaningful difference in speed, but the yield break version is slightly faster. Are there any reasons to use one over the other? Is one easier to read than the other? Is there a behavior difference that would matter to a caller?

    Hi, I'm surprised this question hasn't come up. Couldn't find much on the web. Using Entry.objects.latest('created_at') I can recover the latest entry for all Entry objects, but say if I want the latest entry for each user? This is something similar to an SQL latest record query. But how do I achieve this using the ORM? Here is my approach I'm wondering if it is the most efficient way to do what I want. First I perform a sub query: Objects are grouped by user and the Max (latest) created_by field is returned for each user (created_at__max) I then filter Entry objects based on the results in the subquery and get the required objects. Entry.objects.filter(created_at__in=Entry.objects.values('user').annotate(Max('created_at')).values_list('created_at__max')) or using a manager: class UsersLatest(models.Manager): def get_query_set(self): return Super(UsersLatest,self).get_query_set().filter(created_at__in=self.model.objects.values('user').annotate(Max('created_at')).values_list('created_at__max')) Is there a more efficient way? possibly without sub query?     I am on my way to Europe for 20 days with the wife and teenage kids. Among us, we have 3 iPhones, 1 Blackberry, 2 iPad 3G and 2 Macbook Pro laptops. Each has Skype. I am very concerned about AT&T data charges, and I am looking for a sensible alternative. For example, the AT&T data plans for the phones and iPads are $200 EACH for 200 MB per device. That is $1,200 and does not even cover the laptops. Ouch!!! I am thinking about a prepaid data plan from a European cell system of some sort combined with a GSM data modem and a Cradlepoint router, such as the CTR500. So, questions: 1) Anyone know of a GSM data source in Europe where I can buy a GSM Modem compatible with the CTR500 at a reasonable prepaid rate? 2) Experience with the CTR500?

    So if your converting from Void* to Type* or from Type* to Void* should you use: void func(void *p) { Params *params = static_cast<Params*>(p); } or void func(void *p) { Params *params = reinterpret_cast<Params*>(p); } To me static_cast seems the more correct but I've seen both used for the same purpose. Also, does the direction of the conversion matter. i.e. should I still use static_cast for: _beginthread(func,0,static_cast<void*>(params) I have read the other questions on C++ style casting but I'm still not sure what the correct way is for this scenario (I think it is static_cast)

    I'm working on an application that needs to display a context menu on screen in various scenarios. In the function I'm writing, I don't have access to any NSWindows or NSViews. I'd like to use popUpMenuPositioningItem:atLocation:inView as this function works perfectly for me in 10.6. However, we have a requirement to support 10.5, so this function isn't available to me. The feature I'm most interested in, as stated in the documentation is: If view is nil, the location is interpreted in the screen coordinate system. This allows you to pop up a menu disconnected from any window. Basically, I need to display the context menu given a location on screen, but without any associated view. Is there any way to achieve this on 10.5?

  • C# equivalent of the C++ custom project Wizard

    Hi., I have an existing wizard template created for VC++ from year back, ported to VS2008. It uses the custom wizard jscript/html templating system and DTE object. I've used this successfully for years, but now I want to create an entry for a standard C# project, I see there's no way to customise the C# project settings - the methods are for VC++ only. Is there something closely related to this for C# projects (or do I have to learn yet another way of creating a wizard for .net apps?)

    I know the practical difference between a PySVN property status of "normal" (has properties, not changed locally) and "none" (has no properties). My question is this: is it ever possible for there to be local modifications to an items properites, and have PySVN report the property status as "none"? I would say no, but maybe there's some corner case I'm missing.

    Hello there! After whittling down of the options we've encountered a problem with PNG's and ActionScript 3 (AS3). When loading a PNG 8 or PNG 32 with alpha transparancy we're getting the following error reported in Flash:- "Error #2124: Loaded file is an unknown type" Now, we're dealing with some legacy images, and it appears as though this problem isn't universal - some images believed to be 32bit alpha PNG are loading. BUT, some conclusions:- converting one image that was 32 bit alpha (NOT WORKING IN AS3) to PNG 8 index transparency DID work. And converting that same image to PNG 8 alpha DID NOT work.   • Getting XML data from a external page and parsing it with PHP

    I'm trying to create a database of World of Warcraft gems. If I go to this page: http://www.wowarmory.com/search.xml?fl[source]=all&fl[type]=gems&fl[subTp]=purple&searchType=items And go to View Source in Firefox, I see a tonne of XML data which is exactly what I want. I think file_get_contents() is bringing back data that isn't XML, maybe some Javascript files judging by the iPhone parts in the errors. Is there any way to just get back the XML from that page? I want to then report back TRUE or NULL/FALSE, so I'm just testing the presence of to be specific.
