  • Install over multiple UpgradeCodes with Visual Setup?

    We have a product that has been installed with multiple UpgradeCodes in the past. There's a big red box in the documentation saying not to do that, but the developer somehow overlooked it.     When you are designing a JMS application, which use cases make you pick temporary queues over persistent queues? We use temporary queues for response messages. We're having some issues maintaining connections to the temp queues, though, so I am testing persistent response queues, instead. One clear disadvantage of persistent queues is that your application has to "know" about them beforehand. If that's not a big deal, though, are there use cases where temp queues are the obvious choice?

  • Windows based development environment: HyperV, VMWare, or VirtualBox on development machine?

    I am a software engineer with a little bit of an informal "support" functionality... I am trying to figure out what is the best possible approach to employing virtualization technologies into our development process. Since the code we develop is server-centric, testing it often requires a VM with specific software requirements. I used to use VM Ware player (free version) to run my VM's until both of my laptops started exhibiting issues with corrupted windows 7 services and dying hard drives. All leads pointed to VMWare, which by the way seems to be a solid product if you pay for the Workstation edition ($300). On a side note, I have always been a fan of the Windows Server product line. I think it makes for one of the best development environments out there - it is highly scalable, highly reliable, and very efficient. So to be fair I replaced the drives of the laptops and installed Windows Server 2008R2, VS2010 Ultimate SP1, SQL Server 2008R2, TFS Server 2010 and all other tools and API's needed do do my work properly. So now I am stuck with a bunch of VMWare VMs. I don't want to repeat of what happened before, and I certainly don't want to bog down my machine with an inefficient hypervisor or services that are not needed. Futhermore the VMDK hard-disk format used by VMWare is not compatible with the VHD format of Hyper V. It is my understanding that converting from one format to the other can only happen by Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine which I have downloaded from MSDN and ready to install. I guess the question at this point is: Does SCVM run as another service in Windows? Is it a memory hog? What is a better virtualization technology - Hyper-V or Virtual Box in terms of efficiency ease of use and most importantly - memory footprint? (Keep in mind the development environment already has a ton of services running such as TFS Server, SQL Server, IIS, etc...) How would you advise to proceed at this point so that the VMs are still used in the test process? Thanks Martin

  • CPU operating temperature ranges

    I have an AMD Phenom II 960T with 2 cores unlocked for a total of 6 cores. I don't overclock at all. I have a Arctic Cooling ACALP64 Heatsink/Fan installed. I'm currently running ESXi 5.0 so I have to go into the BIOS to read the CPU temperatures, which at idle seem to be in the 71-74C range. To me, this is pretty high, but I cannot find any official temperature ranges that AMD says the CPU can work well within. There seems to be a lot of questions on superuser and numerous forums around CPU temperatures but no one seems to have a clear consensus as to what the manufacturer temperature ranges are for specific CPUs. I've tried searching through AMDs site to no avail. At this point, I'd be willing to shut off the 2 extra cores if it keeps the heat down but until I get some sort of tolerance or range for temperature, I have no idea if the CPU is being damaged or not. Can anyone point to a direct source, article, FAQ from AMD that specifically states their CPUs temperature range? Or are CPU temperature ranges so varying that there's no possible baseline? Am I being too paranoid about this? To me, anything over 65C is a bit much and if I'm in the low-mid 70s range with NO VMs running, what can I expect if I have several VMs running?

I have an opportunity to design an API however I see fit, but I would like it to be easy to use for those accessing it.   • Slow, choppy video playback with nVidia 8600GT

    I have an nVidia 8600GT card (made by EVGA) on a machine with Windows Vista (AMD Athlon X2 processors) and four gigs of ram. It runs pretty good, but I have had some slow/choppy/stuterring video playback issues whenever watching flash videos on Youtube or other sites. The problem is there with both Firefox and IE flash videos, but is maybe worse with Firefox. I also tried Linux with nVidia's binary drivers and it was about the same. I downloaded EVGA precision which allows me to control stuff like the fan and clock speed. The card's temp (in both Vista and Linux) is usually at 66C when idle (not playing a game or watching anything). It goes up a little when watching a video (maybe 68-72C). Any ideas on how to fix this? UPDATE: The issues are both with full screen and embedded flash videos. I have Flash 10.0.32.18 (always make sure I use most recent for security), and the CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+ at 2.11 GHZ. The current GPU driver installed is the most recent GeForce one from last July.

  • Proper approach to debug PC startup problems (POST)

    My CPU was heating up to around 65 deg C and last time this had happened (about a year ago), I got thermal paste put between the CPU and heat sink and this managed to get it down to about 45 - 50 degrees. This time, I got some thermal paste and put it myself. However, my PC is not showing the POST display and not starting up. This is what happens LEDs light up HDDs spin Mouse is getting power All fans including the processor fan starts No display on monitor No diagnostic beep sounds (no sounds at all) What I have tried Removing everything including RAM, HDD, PCI cards, AGP card Boot up machine No changes from first state. What steps can I take to figure out where the problem lies? Note (might be important) When I removed the heat sink, the processor came out with it (it was stuck to it inspite of the processor latch on) Had to pry it separate with a screw-driver. Configuration Pentium 4, 2.8 Ghz with HT (very old, I know) Original Intel Mobo with onboard sound and graphics (GB series) 2x512 Mb DDR-RAM 2 SATA disks (320 Gigs / 250 gigs) DVD Writer Creative Sound Card Network card Any help would be appreciated.   • How to control the font size of html select boxes on iPhone

    Regular HTML select boxes (such as, e.g. found here), while being "chosen" are presented by the iPhone on a native widget that seems to totally ignore regular html font sizes and whatnot. It does some ellipsing when it goes too long, but the font is way too big for a list I want to present -- even on landscape, only about 35 characters can fit. Is there any way to tell the iPhone to use a smaller font there?

  • Computer won't start up. Stuck on Lenovo splash screen. Help Diagnose

    I have some (I'm not sure exactly what model) Lenovo 21" IdeaCentre. Honestly, the computer works off and on. I have had problems with it not being able to shutdown, which I fixed. The fan seems to be constantly running, a few other problems as well. Anyway, nobody was using it when all of a sudden it switched to a blue screen. I was in the kitchen, but when I got over to the computer I read the message. It said something about bad drivers, but that is all I saw and then it restarted. However, when it got to the Lenovo Splash screen, nothing happened. I waited there for over 10 minutes, but still nothing. I tried to turn of the computer, but the only way to do it was to pull out the power cable. I then removed all USB devices and tried again. Still nothing. It also won't respond to keyboard input when I try to use enter to interrupt normal startup. My guess is some piece of hardware is damaged inside the machine. However, I have no idea what piece it is. Does anybody have any idea what could be wrong with it? Thanks.

    I have a custom Dialog that contains only a TextView to display some text in my application. The documentation lists that only the b, i, u, tt, big, small, sup, sub, and strike tags are supported. I really need to add some newlines for readability. Do I need to change to a more complicated layout, or is there some way to encode newlines in the resource? I tried adding br tags, but that did not help.
