    I know that this laptop (Asus UL30A) does support playing HD material with the help of the GPU on windows. The question is how can I do this under linux? The CPU load as is implies that this is not activated. I assume that it's limited to a handful of codecs. But which player supports this, if its even supported at all?

  • How do I identify resource hogs on Firefox?

    I have installed a package of Firefox extensions that installed a few extensions to my Firefox. Recently I have noticed, that the resource consumption of the Firefox process rose to unacceptable levels for my rather weak Laptop. How can I identify the add-ons responsible for this? I do not want to uninstall all the add-ons since I think some of them really make my life easier. Is there a way to profile my Firefox plugins, preferably over a period of time?

  • HP ProBook 4540s CD/DVD Drive cannot Read Disks

    I seem to have a problem with the CD/DVD drive on my HP ProBook 4540s laptop. I cannot get it to read any disks. Normally, I would say that this is a hardware issue, but whenever I put a disk that previously could be read in the drive, it starts to make noise like it is trying to to read the disk but cannot and AnyDVD HD seems to be able to retrieve disk information with some struggle. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

  • Disable Charm bar's Touchpad gesture shortcut

    I'm using an Acer AO722 laptop. Everytime I slide my finger from the right edge of the touchpad (where the slider is) toward the center (mostly accidentally), the charmbar pops up and stays on the screen until I manually click on some random spots on the screen. There's no such option in the Synaptics properties: .. nor is there any in the mouse option. Is there a way to turn this shortcut off?

    Whenever I log into my Windows 7 desktop from my Windows 7 laptop using RDC, the Num Lock is enabled on the host computer and it is not disabled after disconnecting. What can I do to stop the Num Lock from being enabled or automatically disable it at the end of the session? (I do not know if this happens only on Windows 7 and have no way of checking, so I went with the generic windows tag)

  • rundll32 gets stuck when running games on windows 7 [closed]

    When I run a game on my windows 7 laptop, Rundll32 completely uses up one of my cores and the game wont start. By searching the web I have been able to fix it by 1 - Disabling game info collection/updation from the games explorer. It solved the problem for some games but not all 2 - Killing the game exe once rundll32 gets stuck and restarting the game This has solved the problem for now, but is there a proper and permanent solution to this?

    I just bought a new SSD for my laptop, which is going to be a server running ArchLinux with grub2, GPT and btrfs. My layout should look like this: (grub-partition?) /boot ext2 75MB / btrfs 15GB /home btrfs remaining What do I need to do to create these partitions in a correctly aligned fashion using parted? Do I need to consider alignment when formatting each partition with the desired file system?

    Hi, A portion of my laptop screen broke. Is there any kind of software that will just ignore that part and resize everything accordingly? It's like 1/6 of the screen on the right that makes anything over there impossible to see. If not, what would be the best programming language to go about making my own program?     I can find plenty of information on how to clear Google Chrome's recent browsing data, in various periods, as well as clearing all browsing data. But I want to clear old browsing data—say for a start, anything over two months old. (I'm trying to save space on a crowded laptop.) Does anyone know any principled way to do this, or shall I just dive into ~/.config/google, start removing likely-looking files, and hope for the best. I run Google Chrome on Debian Linux.

  • Windows 7 system drive says it is raw, but System Recovery starts without issues

    I have been running Windows 7 RC1 since it was available a couple of months ago and had no issues whatsoever until today. When I start my laptop, Windows does not boot but instead Windows System Recovery starts. I've used diskpart to list the partitions on the drive and my system partition (c:) has a RAW filesystem. I really need to save all data on the disk as fast as I cant and I would really like not to have to reinstall my system.

    HI Folks, i have an Inspiron E1505 with Windows 7 and Intel GMA 945 Chipset. I connected a Dell SP2309W 23" monitor via VGA to the laptop but it is not achieving it's original resolution but is stuck at 1024 x 768. Also it is detected as a Generic Non PNP Display Device. I upgraded my display driver to latest version and it fully supports Windows 7. What more can i do? Any help. Thanks a Lot in advance

  • Dragging a window makes it become choppy

    On my old computer when you drag a window around, it seems to be cut up (like what you'd see in remote desktop on a slow connection) and its becoming really annoying. A few weeks when I was transferring data from it to my new laptop and it was working fine then however when I started it a few minutes ago this issue occurred.   • iPhone surfing via USB... without wifi or data plan?

    I bought an iPhone in China, where it is manufactured without Wifi. (I would have to switch carriers to sign up for a data plan as my current Chinese carrier doesn't support surfing either... if possible I want to avoid getting yet another card though.)     I with few of my flat-mates share internet connection by using ASL cable into one laptop and then making Adhoc private network so that we all can enjoy internet connectivity. It all worked wonderful few initial days, but now my MS vista is taking much time to identify that adhoc network and it though I am connected to my friend, it takes 5-10 minutes untill I use internet.
