• Website hosting and deployment

  I'm relatively new to Web Development especially when it comes to infrastructure. I have AngularJS application build and served by brunch.io locally. It uses rails-api JSON data. I'd like to deploy my angular application separately from rails server. For now, JS app is placde inside public directory of backend server and deployed together. It isn't elegant nor effective so I want to use some other hosting service. I was thinking about VPS where I could place both Angular and Ruby applications. I read about NodeJS or Nginx that can serve static files, but I don't have any knowledge or experience with these technologies. How is the best way to provide separate frontend and backend applications communicating with each other?

• Is type safety worth the trade-offs?

  I began coding in in Python primarily where there is no type safety, then moved to C# and Java where there is. I found that I could work a bit more quickly and with less headaches in Python, but then again, my C# and Java apps are at much higher level of complexity so I have never given Python a true stress test I suppose. The Java and C# camps make it sound like without the type safety in place, most people would be running into all sorts of horrible bugs left an right and it would be more trouble than its worth. This is not a language comparison, so please do not address issues like compiled vs interpreted. Is type safety worth the hit to speed of development and flexibilty? WHY? to the people who wanted an example of the opinion that dynamic typing is faster: "Use a dynamically typed language during development. • I want to learn how to help or contribute to Unity

  I am a college student studying computer science and would one day like to work on operating systems. The part of ubuntu that really interests me is Unity and I would like to study it and possibly contribute to it. I was reading the wiki pages about it and it was saying to get a copy of all the required components and then start hacking. Would it be wise to do this in a virtual machine with ubuntu on it? Do you have any advice on a good place to start? Do you know of any common pitfalls? Should I also post in the irc for this? Thanks

• Multitouch screen needs two touch points

  So, I got a netbook (Some weird China brand) and it has a multitouch screen. I got to installing Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 and I used the mouse and keyboard for that. When I wanted to try the touchscreen, at first it didn't seem to work, then I tried to multitouch, and this is what happens: I put my finger on point A I put my finger on point B, while still holding point A. The cursor now jumps to the location on the screen where point A is touched. I can now use point A to drag the cursor ONLY when holding point B. I can use point B for clicking by tapping, but ONLY when holding point A at the place I want to click. What is going on?

  I never know where it's acceptable to post something like this, so please forgive if it's in the wrong place. I'm very interested in going further in to web development; I know a bit of javascript, a bit of php, and so forth, but I'm now seeing these services that will go from psd to wordpress for 200 bucks and I'm wondering how the hell is anyone able to compete with this? So I'm wondering if those more knowledgeable than me could tell me what areas are the least likely to be able to be outsourced, for 5 bucks to some kid in Uzbekistan( no offense to that kid).. do you think it's on the database management side, or maybe app development? ideas appreciated.

• How to properly URL/domain forward

  No clue on a title for this, someone feel free to suggest an edit. I have a client that has a website. He owns around 200 domains, and wants each domain to contain content from the main website. The header, footer, and navigation bars will remain the same for each domain, but the actual page content will vary (obviously duplicate content issues, open to suggestions) He wants each individual page to be its own separate domain, rather than a url within the main domain. (page1.com page2.com etc - NOT site.com/page1.html, however the file is actually hosted at site.com/page1.html - all links will direct to site.com/whatever accordingly) What would be the best place to start reading / learning on how to do this, and what concerns/considerations should be taken into mind?

My team currently uses ad hoc methods of handing off documentations, such as diagrams, API references, etc. Is there a open source solution (or even proprietary one) that enables us to manage: Infrastructure/architecture/software diagrams API documentation Directory structures/file structures Overall documentation summaries in one place? E.g., instead of using multiple systems like Swagger, Wikis, etc. - is there a solution that can seamlessly combine all of these? And enable us to generate a package including all 4 key items with one click to hand off to other teams.

• Script / App to unRAR files, and only delete the archives which were sucessfully expanded.

  I have a cron job which runs a script to unrar all files in a certain directory (/rared for argument's sake) and place the expanded files in /unrared. I would like to change this script so that it deletes the original rar archives from /rared only if they successfully extracted. This does not mean that unrar has reported that they have been fully extracted, because I have had data corruption during decompression before. Ideally (pie-in-the-sky, just to give you an idea of what I'm shooting for,) the unrar program would include this functionality, comparing an expected md5sum value with the actual md5sum value and only deleting the archive if they match. I don't mind scripting this entire process if I have to, but there must be a better way than unraring twice and comparing md5sums.

• Anti aliasing problem

  I am auditioning fonts on google web fonts and one that I was discounting was Ubuntu because it looked a bit jagged ( screenshot below taken straight from google); however afterward I read an article where it was mentioned as a good choice, and there was a screenshot where it looked really good ( to me anyway ). I am using windows 7 and have tried looking at it in chrome and firefox. I notice the same thing with some other fonts but this one is a good example because it looks perfect in the screenshot but not so good when I look at it on their site. I know this essentially is a question about setting my computer, but I thought that this would be the best place to pose the question: Is there something wrong with the settings on my machine seeing as it's obviously not showing the font the same on my computer as it did when the article writer downloaded it and used it in an image. • Does heavy JavaScript use adversely impact Googleability?

  I've been developing the client-side for my web-app in JavaScript. The JavaScript can communicate with my server over REST (HTTP)[JSON, XML, CSV] or RPC (XML, JSON). I'm writing writing this decoupled client in order to use the same code for both my main website and my PhoneGap mobile apps. However recently I've been worrying that writing the website with almost no static content would prevent search-engines (like Google) from indexing my web-page. I was taught about this restriction about 4 years ago, which is why I'm asking here, to see if this restriction is still in-place. Does heavy JavaScript use adversely impact Googleability?

• Why does a proportional controller have a steady state error?

  I've read about feedback loops, how much this steady state error is for a given gain and what to do to remove this steady state error (add integral and/or derivative gains to the controller), but I don't understand at all why this steady state error occurs in the first place. If I understand how a proportional control works correctly, the output is equal to the current output plus the error, multiplied by the proportional gain (Kp). However, wouldn't the error slowly diminish over time as it is added (reaching 0 at infinite time), not have a steady state error? From my confusion, it seems I'm completely misunderstanding how it works - a proper explanation of how this steady state error eventuates would be fantastic.

• System Slow After Uprading Ubuntu

  i have an ubuntu network machine which has release of 10.04.1 LTS Lucid. on this system i have apache, postgresql and django. for some app. development i have to install php and php-curl... due to being on network, i have exported wmvare machine to internet and firstly i have upgraded system and then install php5 packages on it. After all replacing it with its old place, i have considered that the new system query is some slow according to another. Old system query time : 140 ms New system query time : 9.11 s i have checked /etc/network interface and it seems there is no problem. i have checked /etc/resolv.conf and it seems ok i have checked /etc/nsswitch.conf and only host section is different from old one which old system has hosts: files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns mdns4 and then i have checked time host -t A services.myapp.com and i got real 0m0.355s user 0m0.010s sys 0m0.020s and now what can i have to check for boosting my system as before?

• application custom stock icons not working in ubuntu unity top panel menu (aka appmenu) ("Menus Have Icons" ON)

  I recently noticed that in ubuntu unity the top menu of my apps does not show the (custom) icons I added to the gtk stock, but only the basic gtk stock icons. This happens only since the top menu is displayed in the unity top panel (appmenu) and not in the application window. In place of the correct custom icons I see "gtk-missing-image". On my apps toolbars and other menus those icons are displayed properly, the problem is only with the top menu. This happens either with pygtk2 (e.g. http://www.giuspen.com/cherrytree/) and gobject introspection (e.g. http://www.giuspen.com/nautilus-pyextensions/). I use gtk ui manager after integrating the stock icons this way: factory = gtk.IconFactory() pixbuf = gtk.gdk.pixbuf_new_from_file(filepath) iconset = gtk.IconSet(pixbuf) factory.add(stock_name, iconset) factory.add_default() If anybody solved this problem please help.   Today I can finally say that I finished both of my Bill Gates books that had been lying on the shelf for several years. The books were… The Road Ahead (1995) Business @ the Speed of Thought (1999) I enjoyed “The Road Ahead”, purely because it was fun to read about someone looking into the future at technology, while I could read it looking at the past. In fact I was quite impressed with how much he got right and it was also nice to remember “The good old days”. Business @ the Speed of Thought was a harder read for me. The book still had some good insights, but was tough going at times (possibly because it was several hundred more pages than the first). All that being said, I can now finally place them back on the shelf knowing that they have been read.

  This question already has an answer here: How to diagnose a search engine ranking drop? 5 answers I modified a site recently : - I added many google analytics events, to better understand user behaviour. - I added also two buttons on almost all the pages of the site. Those buttons show modal-views (I am using bootstrap) with questions about user opinion. This modals views are on almost all pages of the site. After this modification the ranking of the site decreased on google search from the second place to the seconde page :( Is it the events-collected or the model-views added ? If the model-views are the reason, then how to better do similar surveys ? Did you have please similar experience, or explanation to this ? Perhaps it is the effect of panda4 update. In this cas, what can I look for to improve the site. How to debug the problem/reasons ?

  When you interrupt the work on some code (be it because you have to work on something else or go on vacation or simply because it is the end of the day), once you close that Visual Studio project, what is your preferred way to remember what you want to do next when you start working on that code again. Do you set a Visual Studio bookmark or do write down something like // TODO: continue here next time? Maybe you have a special tag like // NEXT:? Do you put a sticky note on your monitor? Do you use a cool tool or Visual Studio plugin I should know? Do you have any personal trick that helps you find the place in your code where you left off the last time you worked on your code?

• Why is Claws Mail starting in offline mode?

  I am sorry if this is not the best place to ask this, but hopefully someone might be able to help. After I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 from 11.04, Claws Mail 3.7.10 began starting in offline mode. It continues to do so upon every startup. I have searched and searched but cannot find any option that might affect this. Am I overlooking the option? Is this a bug with the current versions of Claws Mail and Ubuntu? Or is there some other way to fix this? Thank you.

• Debugging Windows

  After installing VS 2008 on a new PC I noticed that the Autos and Locals windows did not show up when debugging. So I went to the logical place to find them View/Other Windows. No luck they were not there. I use VS every day but like a lot of folks I only need to install it every few years, usually with a new PC. So I forgot where they were. Finding them is easy, just start debugging a project and go to Debug/Windows. The Autos and Locals windows along with the others will be there. • Tips and Tools for creating Spritesheet animations

  I am looking for a tool that I can use to create sprite sheet easily. Right now I am using Illustrator, but I can never get the center of the character in the exact position, so it looks like it is moving around(even though its always in one place), while being loop through the sprite sheet. Is there any better tools that I can be using? Also what kind of tips would you give for working with a sprite sheet? Should I create each part of the character in individual layers (left arm, right arm, body, etc.) or everything at once? any other tips would also be helpful! thank you
