• Exchange Failover Solution

  I've been given the task to come up with an exchange solution that will support 200 users total throughout 4 states. 1GB per user. It needs to have a failover solution,The failover must reside in another location. There is an mpls that connects the locations. I am hoping to get recomendations on hardware, software setups. I recently worked with some big name reps and they steered me in the wrong direction and now I'm a few days away from my proposal date with bogus quotes and scrambling for a solution. I used to manage a standalone 2003 exchange server for years and am at a loss now with figuring out a clustering/failover...Any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

• Timeout ssh sessions after inactivity?

  PCI requirement 8.5.15 states: "If a session has been idle for more than 15 minutes, require the user to re-enter the password to re-activate the terminal." The first, and most obvious, way to deal with ssh sessions that are idling at the bash prompt is by enforcing a read-only, global $TMOUT of 900. Unfortunately, that only covers sessions sitting at the bash prompt. The spirit of the PCI spec would also require killing sessions running top/vim/etc. I've considered writing a */1 cron job that parses the output of "/usr/bin/w" and kills the associated shell, but that seems like a blunt instrument. Any ideas for something that would actually do what the spec requires and just lock the terminal? I've looked at away and vlock; they both seem great for voluntarily locking your terminal, but I need a cron/daemon task that will enforce locking.

• Managing PHP processes on Windows 7 (with WAMP)

  Is there a way to manage (especially list and kill) long-running PHP processes on a Windows 7 system set up with WAMP? Every once in a while, I'll accidentally throw an infinite loop into a PHP process and want to kill it. Right now, all I can think to do is to restart all my WAMP services but sometimes the PHP processes manage to survive right through the restart, i.e., I still see them outputting to logs even after WAMP's restarted. And if the process isn't logging, then I have no way at all to know when/if it's been killed. Not to mention, this will wipe out everything I'm doing with WAMP, not just a single process. I don't seem to see anything relevant in the Windows Task Manager, but maybe I'm missing something.

• Unkillable process problem

  I closed application, but the process remained in the list. I try to stop in from the task manager, but nothing happens. No error messages, process just stays in the list. I try to debug it, but the debugger says: Unable to attach to the crashing process. The requested operation is not supported. This happens with VS2008 and some other programs, sometimes. What? The? Hell? How to kill it?

• Strange ports on default install of W7

  I have a base new install of windows 7, and when I went to look for something else I saw the attached netstat output. What concerns me is that this is Windows + Truecrypt + drivers, nothing else installed. The sequential high ranged ports belonging to several different seemingly not out of place services seemed odd. So I torched the install, used Active@ to scrub the disk, re-downloaded the ISO from MSDN, and did a fresh reinstall, viola, they are there again. It just seems out of place, I have seen a many netstats over the years, this one just strikes me as odd, so I started thinking rootkit? (JUst FYI, when I reloaded I named the machine "Error" so that is why the task manager reads the computer name as such.) So I would like to know if anyone else could explain it, and therefore is may be normal, or would they be worried as well, and should I start considering I have some very strange thing occuring on my network?

• How to know what dll or services taskhost.exe is hosting?

  I have recently discover a new process in the task manager : taskhost.exe (maybe it was there before but i did not notice it) As the name implies, it seems to be used for running dll in background (like rundll32.exe). Is there a way to know which dll / services this process is hosting ? i would like to know for which purpose it is used and if there is some malware or not. I know it is possible to see which services svchost.exe process is hosting using process explorer utility. I have checked taskhost.exe threads and their stacks using process explorer, here is what i get : So it seems it is used for sound (winmm + playsndsrv). But there is also other things for which very few information is provided (ex : thread 1456, taskhost.exe as start address and nothing relevant can be found in stack (same for 1464, 2272 and so). So maybe it is not the right way to do.

• Applications starts very slowly from a network path

  Hi We have a windows 2008 server which hosts the network share \\srvcompany\lib. This share contains several applications needed for the daily business. Every client/user (all win xp) has shortcuts on the desktop to these apps. We have the problem that at several (but not all) clients the apps starts very slowly. If I copy the application's programm files to a local folder then they'll start fastly. When I watch the memory usage in the task manager on such a "slow" machine while an applications starts I notice that the memory usage grows much slowier than when I start the app from a "fast" machine. But when I copy files with Windows Explorer from this share, the speed is nearly the same. I've also checked the network driver, both tested clients have the same network card with the same driver version. Has anyone an idea where or what I should check next to solve this problem? • How can old DOS utilities be incompatible with x64?

  I found that ARJ.EXE archiver does not run under Windows 7 x64. Bot how can it be? The task of the achiver is to do some very basic file IO. How can it be so? Also I found that apparently no any old command line utility does not run under Windows 7 x64. Also I found that there is no any compatibility option for this case. Is this a very great Microsoft sabotage? Are there any ways to overcome this? Thanks

  Windows 7 (Aero) does not offer an option to easily change the taskbar font size. BACKGROUND: I was using the Medium Text size of 125%. (Set via Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display) The problem I found was that many programs, sad to say, Microsoft's included, don't scale or position properly at other than 100%. I've reset the DPI to 100%, and have been able to customize most of my windows settings for easy reading, except the task bar font size In Summary: There are many ways to change the taskbar font color. • Windows 7 x64. Some 32 bit applications refuse to install.

  I have been having problems lately when trying to install older games onto my PC. It is only with 32 bit applications. A few games that will not install are: Drakan: Order Of The Flame TA Kingdoms (Total Annihilation installed fine) Baldur's Gate. In Baldur's Gate, when I use autorun.exe and choose install, the autorun closes and the computer loads for a second (as it should) then nothing pops up. Ten minutes later still nothing, so I try again, still nothing. So next I use Setup.exe. Still nothing. I run it in every compatibility mode, and as Administrator in every mode, still nothing. Then I open Task Manager, and there are about 80 setup.exe processes running, all of them doing nothing and taking up next to no resources.

  Possible Duplicate: Windows Server 2003 Router with PortForwarding Situation We have Verizon Fios 25/25 Internet Connection, Server acting as a router, and around 12 office computers. Task Portforward port 29000 from office computer. Problem Once I connected wan and lan cables I just had to set static lan ip (on server) and plug in switch with office computers into second nic. Then just right click on wan nic and select share internet connection. All office computers were assigned with an IP address 192.168.0.XXX and Gateway 192.168.0.1 (server). Now I have to open port and portfoward it from computer 192.168.0.190 (static ip, manual). Before enabling "RRA" I had to unshare internet connection (wan interface) and was able to setup network. Now how do I setup a network within "RRA" and share internet with private network?   There are answers out there to this question, but all of them have been under explianed so hence to difficult to coprehend and use them to my advantage. I want to do the seemingly simple (but not) task of Draging a Formula (Filling a series) across Column's while increasing the formula row number relativley. For Example to drag this formula: | =A1 | =A2 | =A3 Some other notes, Transposing by copy paste has proven too difficult for the amount of data. Offset and Indirect has been used by other people to do this but I don't get how they work at all so when I attempt to use them I don't know how to format it to my range. Here's a example photo Idealy we want the dragged section to continue on to fill the formula.

• Win XP shut down window very slow to appear

  Hi all, I click Start-Shut Down and the Shut Down window takes 5 minutes to appear. This problem doesn't happen after a fresh boot, it only happens after I have been logged on for awhile. I am using a MacBookPro with Bootcamp. The machine actually shuts down quickly, its just really slow to bring up the shut down window. Basically I would like to know if: 1) Anyone has any ideas why this would happen 2) Who owns the "Shut Down" window (i.e. what happens on the OS after I click the Shut Down icon in the start menu) I've tried perusing the task manager to try and see if any processes look suspicious, but to no avail. thanks, H

• Two domains accessing same folder

  I've just taken a new role in a school and am still familiarizing myself with their network, how ever I have recently been given a task and I'm having a little trouble finding out the fundementals of it. I have an admin network/domain 10.49.x.x and a classroom network/domian 192.168.1.x both connect to a Proxy server 10.49.202.231/192.168.1.51. Each domain has it's own shared folders as you'd expect, files and software installs etc, how ever there is a folder "staff" on the classroom network that all the teachers on the classroom network can access. The users on the admin network would like to access this same folder. How do I go about making this happen?

• scp using a password on the command line

  I am trying to write a script that will deploy a build created on my desktop machine (windows/cygwin) to a machine in my test environment (linux). I would like to use scp to copy the build to the target machine. The only account on the target machine is root, and I cannot create a special user for this task. The root user is unable to log in using an ssh key (I suspect that this is configured on the ssh server, but I do not know which configuration options control this). At any rate, I cannot change the configuration of the ssh server. My desktop machine uses Cygwin, and I have ssh installed. What I need is the command-line-fu that will allow me to put the password on the command line. I am aware of the dangers of having a plaintext password in a shell script, but that is not a concern here.

• Limit a process's relative (not absolute) processor consumption in Linux

  What is the standard way in Linux to enforce a system policy to limit the relative CPU use of a single process? That is, on a quad-core machine, I never want a process to use more than 2 CPUs at once, even if the process creates more threads. I do not want an absolute time limit, just a relative limit so that one task cannot dominate the machine. This is also different than renice, which allows a process to use all the resources but just politely step aside if others need them too. ulimit is the usual resource limiting tool, but it does not allow such CPU restrictions.. it can limit the number of processes per user, or absolute CPU time, not restrict the maximum number of active threads of a single process. I've found a couple of user-level tools, like CPUlimit, but not a system level tool or setting. Does such a standard resource controller exist in Linux (Red Hat Enterprise, if it matters.) If there is such a limit imposed, how would a user identify it?

• How to trigger chef-client on all nodes from my workstation

  I have 5 nodes and all of them have one setup cook-book in common. Now I would like to add another task in this common cookbook that would configure SQL server for me on all the nodes. Is there a way/command to manually trigger this change across all clients right away? I use azure VM's. All the nodes are Windows Server 2012 machines. I could do a knife winrm machine-name chef-client -m -x username -P password on all the machines, but i'm sure there should be a better way of doing this. I'm new to using chef, so I might be missing a very basic command here.

• Why is the resulting file unplayable when I use FFMPEG to convert a MP4 video to ASF?

  I want to convert an .mp4 file to an .asf file, but I need to keep the size of the file below 150 mb (the server I need to upload the file to can only take files under 150 mb). Basically I want to recontain the .mp4 in an .asf file. The code I'm using currently is ffmpeg input.mp4 -c copy output.asf The command runs, however when I try to play the file on windows media player (I'm on windows xp) I get an error message saying "Windows media player has encountered a problem while playing the file." Anyone have any idea why this is happening? And what other ways I can accomplish this task?

• Certain running applications cause middle-click in firefox to function differently under windows 7

  If I have photoshop, vlc player, or even just the windows task list open, when I middle click in firefox to get it to open in new tab (by depressing both buttons on my Lenovo g550 with alps touchpad), the mouse icon changes to some variety of scroll type feature, middle click doesn't work, and if I persist then the other programs take focus, and some crash. I assume the scroll like feature must be intended as added functionality in either windows 7 or the alps touchpad driver, but no settings adjustments seem to be able to remove this, and I could see nothing regarding this in firefox. I would really like to fix this! Thanks.

• Converting Visio (.vsd) files to pdf automatically

  I am trying to create a scheduled task to convert all my .vsd files to pdf so all of our devices can read them (linux, mac, smartphones, etc..) and I would prefer not paying for something that can be done with Visio + PDFcreator. The approach of using openoffice doesn't work with .vsd files since it's not a supported format ( Method/tools for batch-converting Microsoft Word files into PDF?) What I've currently is this: 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Visio11\VISIO.EXE' /pt "Z:\Archive\Files.vsd",-PPDFCREATORPRINTER /nologo That is able to open automatically the document I want and to prepare it to be printed, the only missing part is that it requires me to confirm on the printing dialog.   Having read the answers in this discussion, I still would like to come up with the same question: What should I buy to run Flash Media Interactive Server 3.5? I just have slightly different boundary conditions. We plan to serve video to ca. 1,000 users simultaneously. It will be live stream, so the server will receive the stream in HD (1280x720), cache it, reformat to various other resolutions and send it to users. OS of choice is Linux, but if you say it should MS-DOS, so it will be... What would be a decent server for this task?

  I have a very specific task, but can't handle it. I am not a programmer and totally n00b on bash scritps. So the question is, how to create a cron job like this: Script A.sh could be called at any time by hands, and it should create cron job to run script B.sh once at the nearest time point. For example I will have 4 time points: 10.00pm, 10.15pm, 10.30pm, 10.45pm. So if trigger a script A.sh at 10.07pm it should creat cron job to run ONCE script B.sh at 10.15h, because 10.15h is the nearest time point in future. Is it possible? How can I write such script A.sh? I use Centos 6 It is very important and urgent for me. Thank you very much.

• Looking for Unix tool/script that, given an input path, will compress every batch of uncompressed 100MB text files into a single gzip file

  I have a dump of thousands of small text files (1-5MB) large, each containing lines of text. I need to "batch" them up, so that each batch is of a fixed size - say 100MB, and compress that batch. Now that batch could be: A single file that is just a 'cat' of the contents of the individual text files, or Just the individual text files themselves Caveats: unix split -b will not work here as I need to keep lines of text intact. Using the lines option is a bit complicated as there is a large variance in the number of bytes in each line. The files need not be a fixed size strictly, as long as it's within 5% of the requested size The lines are critical, and should not be lost: I need to confirm that the input made its way to output without loss - what rolling checksum (something like CRC32, BUT better/"stronger" in face of collisions) A script should do nicely, but this seems like a task someone has done before, and it would be nice to see some code (preferably python or ruby) that does atleast something similar.

  I have a front SOAP web-server under Linux. It will have to communicate with Windows Servers VM listening each on a HTTP port, for a HTTP POST request. The chosen VM should return a report of the task to the SOAP client. In the SOAP requests, there's a special variable : the priority of the request (kind of SLA), and my question is coming right now : I think of using a ha software (nginx, HAProxy, HeartBeat...) that can manage priority in this point of view. Is it relevant or do you think I need to implement a queue by myself with some specific developments? Ex: I have a SOAP requests with low priority in the pipe : the weight priority for these VM should be decreased if I have high priority SOAP requests at the same time. Any clue will be really appreciated.
