• Screen with no usable configuration - Ubuntu 12.04

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on my Dell XPS13 L322X (installed onto a flash drive). However, at boot time, the screen just turns off. I was able to access the Terminal through recovery mode though. I have tried several of the most common solutions that I've seen on forums/AskUbuntu, in vain. Please help me figure this out. Thanks! • What is the sudo password after I deleted the password for the user?

  To have an easier access to the computer I deleted the user's password so it is blank. But now I'm still asked to type in a password for sudo actions such as installing programms, etc. I know that this belongs to Ubuntu's outrageous security policy (which is why I use Ubuntu in the first place..) but I don't have any password to enter any more!! The old user password is not accepted and anything else (like just hitting enter) doesn't work either. I already tried the recovery mode (root shell) way passwd USER< but it replied that it can't access the password or it has no authority. Thanks in advance for your help!

• Videos stutter in full screen

  Using Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3.4.2. When I load video files (avi, mkv, mp4), they play smoothly in windowed mode, but when in full screen, they mildly (but noticeably) stutter. I've tried various players (from VLC to SMplayer2), with many different output drivers and it's always the same. Also, my video card is AMD Radeon HD 6450, and I've had no luck with the proprietary FGLRX drivers. Every time I install them, my system becomes very sluggish (window dragging animations become choppy etc.). Thanks in advance, guys.

  my friend loaned me his Acer c720 in order to load ubuntu on it. I have previously liberated my netbook and UMPC with Ubuntu but those where normal windows PCs. I have followed all the steps so far in order to enter developer mode yet at the login screen, when I type ctrl+alt+= (F2) nothing happens. the terminal should open up but it does not. Please help me, my friend bought this craptop but does not have wi-fi thus rendering it useless. P.S. how do you right click without an external mouse?

• gnome-panel has multiple rows -- how to undo that?

  On Ubuntu 12.04 I use openbox with a single "gnome-panel" started. But after trying to configure my two screen in Xinerama mode I got additional rows of panels each time X restarted. And despite I completely reverted to my one-screen-X-config the gnome-panel displayed has 4 rows (4 at top sreen, 4 at bottom) only the outermost row has content, the other 3 are empty there is only one gnome-panel process running some widgets appear 4 times, too, although they run only once when I switch away from openbox using unity I am back to 1 row temporarily What went wrong here? How do I undo that? Things that did not help: rm -Rf .gnome2 .gconf/ .compiz-1/ pkill panel, and restarting it

• Gnome 3.10 doesn't show login, Ubuntu 13.10

  I use gnome as default desktop. And I recently upgrade Ubuntu to 13.10 then upgraded gnome to 3.10. Upon restarting, it brings me to the gnome log in screen (GDM) and all I see is the top banner part so like your date, music volume, option to restart, suspend or shutdown. Hitting control+alt+delete tells me gnome display manager will log out - it does but still nothing. I am on the log in screen, but there is no user to select, like there normally is or was. I can boot into safe mode and drop down to shell but I am not sure what commands I would enter to get the login screen back. I am using the gnome PPA's and the "unstable" PPA, so I expected issues, but not this - ideas?

• Monitor resolution can't be saved

  Today I installed Lubuntu 13.10 on Vmware Player (inside Windows). I change the Monitor setting (resolution) from default 800x600 to 1680x1050. It works. Beside Apply, I also press Save button. "Changes are saved" appears. But - after restart, the resolution is again in 800x600. I also opened /etc/xdg/lxsession/Lubuntu/autostart and add (it was empty before) one line: @xrandr --mode 1680x1050 After restart the default resolution is back again. Any idea?

• Syanptics Touchpad Won't Re-enable

  I disabled my Synaptics touchpad while a key on my keyboard and now I can't get it to work again. When I press that key again it says the touchpad turns back on but will not work at all. Rebooting doesn't help, and I tried installing touchpad-indicator but when I try to enable from there it says that it enables, but the icon remains like it's disabled. The odd thing is that it works on the lock screen so I know the drivers aren't messed up, it's just a setting. Also, the touchpad works on guest mode but still nothing on my account. I tried using gconf to set the touchpad_enable to true and it worked, it sure set it. Doesn't make a difference though, my touchpad is still useless. Terminal commands I've used: gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad/touchpad_enabled true synclient Touchpadoff=0 modprobe psmouse

  I've installed ubuntu 12.04, but after rebooting I get the message: GRUB loading: Welcome to GRUB! error: file '/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found Entering rescue mode... grub rescue> I have the following partitons setup: /dev/sda6: /boot ext2 /dev/sda9: / ext4 /dev/sda8: swap /dev/sda7: /home ext4 I guess that some of the prefixes for GRUB are wrong due to the /boot partition? Or there might be a problem with EFI? The hardware is a 1015bx asus netbook with c-60 amd fusion chipset. How can I fix this GRUB problem from the rescue prompt?

• Ubuntu 11.10 boot: xhost: unable to open display

  I've had this papercut for a while now, it's time it was fixed. When I boot up Ubuntu, choosing "Ubuntu...generic" from the grub screen, Ubuntu fails to load. It just sits at the driver/module loading screen. What seems to be the most significant line in this output is "xhost: unable to open display" If I choose "Ubuntu...(recovery mode)" from grub then it loads OK. I don't get why this is. Out of interest I tried enabling boot error logging with #/etc/default/bootlogd BOOTLOGD_ENABLE=Yes but I'm not seeing anything in that file. ETA: I've had this problem since fresh install of 11.10.   I know that 25 lines of lock free code is harder to do than 1000 lines of On_Click()... code but I wonder does anybody know in general what is the productivity of the average programmer in top tech companies. Motivation: I often go ??? mode when I see how low LoC/ day i produce(Im new to the my current language and Im part of the big project, but still..) and I would like to know how bad I am. :) If you are gonna warn me that LoC is a terrible measure I agree, but it is most exact one in a sense that I cant go and write 0.01% of Chrome or IE and say it took me this long so....

• Display settings problems with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

  For whatever reason (this was working correctly on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) when I try to set my displays on top of each other in the settings, it won't allow to place them on top of each other. When I click "apply" I get the error message "Could Not Set Configuration Mode for CRTC 63." Can anybody help me with this? It wont let me set the two displays on top of each other, but it will allow me to place them side to side. Also, I get a random "Unknown display" as well. This was not existent in 12.04 LTS and I have no idea what it is, seeing as how the only screens that are in use, or plugged up for that matter, is my laptop's display (1366x768) and my Samsung TV display (1360x768) thru HDMI.

  I upgraded from ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 but when i open my laptop it freezes before i can login ant the gnome 3 splash screen. alt ctrl + f(any) not working. the only thing i can do is manualy power off. I tryied everything on recovery mode screen and some stuff about grub (nomodeset quiet splash stuff i found at this forum) but nothing is working.   Lately, I've been having Ubuntu crashing randomly.. it goes into read only mode, but once I restart it's working again. Today it happened again and I had to manually shut the computer down. Now I'm not able to boot anymore. I get the following when turning the computer on: error: unknown filesystem And I'm left at "grub rescue". I booted from the Live CD and installed "boot-repair". When I run it it says "no os has been found on this computer", it gives me no option to carry out any fixes. • Stuck in logon loop

  Here's the deal. I set up a computer with Ubuntu 10.04 for my grandmother. Everything worked fine. I connected it to the internet at her house today. After rebooting the computer I found that the computer would kick you back to the logon screen if you attempted to logon to her account. It worked fine logging on to my admin account, and also in Gnome's safe mode. I thought it had resolved itself, but turns out it hadn't, and now I don't have physical access to the computer, plus the remote connection I'd hoped to use only works intermittently. I need some suggestions for troubleshooting for when I'm at her house at some point next week. Ask for any more details, but I'm afraid I won't be able to provide many more until I've checked it out in person, since she is basically unable to use a computer beyond web browsing.   Currently, my webpage images use the alt attribute only. Users complain that their IE8 cannot show the "tooltip" bubble when they mouse over the image. On Microsoft's What's New in Internet Explorer 8 page, it says The alt attribute is no longer displayed as the image tooltip when the browser is running in IE8 Standards mode. Instead, the target of the longDesc attribute is used as the tooltip if present; otherwise, the title is displayed. The alt attribute is still used as the Microsoft Active Accessibility name, and the title attribute is used as the fallback name only if alt is not present. I also found that many say title should be used. Which should I use to meet the industrial standard: alt, longdesc or title?

• permanently disable bluetooth

  I simply don't use bluetooth. Since it can be a security risk and also drains the battery I would like to keep it deactivated. I quickly found the option to turn it off in the settings menu, but the problem is: it doesn't stay dead! Everytime I pull my Nexus 4 out of standby mode bluetooth reappears in the top bar as if I never deactivated it. How can I deactivate it so it stays deactivated or better yet how can I remove it from my phone entirely? I tried sudo apt-get remove bluez bluetooth, but I am not allowed to edit this package.

• Laptop Hibernates after adapter is unplugged

  Hello i am experiencing a strange problem under Ubuntu 12.04. If I unplug the charger while my laptop is on,i don't see any messages but my laptop goes straight into a suspend or hibernate mode and it's a real pain to get it stable again afterwards. It always suspends (or hibernates) It always takes 2 attempts to restart it (press power button, it starts and it hibernates again, press power button and it starts and stays on) It sometimes has an effect on the wireless which doesn't come back clean and i either have to switch the wireless on and off a couple of times. I sometimes have to restart the laptop totally Is anyone else experiencing the same issues and if yes,is there any solution? Thank you in advance.
