  • File Upload drops with no reason

    - by sufoid
    Hallo I want to make an file upload. The script should take the image, resize it and upload it. But it seems that there is any unknown to me error in the upload. Here the code define ("MAX_SIZE","2000"); // maximum size for uploaded images define ("WIDTH","107"); // width of thumbnail define ("HEIGHT","107"); // alternative height of thumbnail (portrait 107x80) define ("WIDTH2","600"); // width of (compressed) photo define ("HEIGHT2","600"); // alternative height of (compressed) photo (portrait 600x450) if (isset($_POST['Submit'])) { // iterate thorugh all upload fields foreach ($_FILES as $key => $value) { //read name of user-file $image = $_FILES[$key]['name']; // if it is not empty if ($image) { $filename = stripslashes($_FILES[$key]['name']); // get original name of file from clients machine $extension = getExtension($filename); // get extension of file in lower case format $extension = strtolower($extension); // if extension not known, output error // otherwise continue if (($extension != "jpg") && ($extension != "jpeg") && ($extension != "png") && ($extension != "gif")) { echo '<div class="failure">Fehler bei Datei '. $_FILES[$key]['name'] .': Unbekannter Dateityp: Es können nur Dateien vom Typ .gif, .jpg oder .png hochgeladen werden.</div>'; } else { // get size of image in bytes // $_FILES[\'image\'][\'tmp_name\'] >> temporary filename of file in which the uploaded file was stored on server $size = getimagesize($_FILES[$key]['tmp_name']); $sizekb = filesize($_FILES[$key]['tmp_name']); // if image size exceeds defined maximum size, output error // otherwise continue if ($sizekb > MAX_SIZE*1024) { echo '<div class="failure">Fehler bei Datei '. $_FILES[$key]['name'] .': Die Datei konnte nicht hochgeladen werden: die Dateigröße überschreitet das Limit von 2MB.</div>'; } else { $rand = md5(rand() * time()); // create random file name $image_name = $rand.'.'.$extension; // unique name (random number) // new name contains full path of storage location (images folder) $consname = "photos/".$image_name; // path to big image $consname2 = "photos/thumbs/".$image_name; // path to thumbnail $copied = copy($_FILES[$key]['tmp_name'], $consname); $copied = copy($_FILES[$key]['tmp_name'], $consname2); $sql="INSERT INTO photos (galery_id, photo, thumb) VALUES (". $id .", '$consname', '$consname2')" or die(mysql_error()); $query = mysql_query($sql) or die(mysql_error()); // if image hasnt been uploaded successfully, output error // otherwise continue if (!$copied) { echo '<div class="failure">Fehler bei Datei '. $_FILES[$key]['name'] .': Die Datei konnte nicht hochgeladen werden.</div>'; } else { $thumb_name = $consname2; // path for thumbnail for creation & storage // call to function: create thumbnail // parameters: image name, thumbnail name, specified width and height $thumb = make_thumb($consname,$thumb_name,WIDTH,HEIGHT); $thumb = make_thumb($consname,$consname,WIDTH2,HEIGHT2); } } } } } // current image could be uploaded successfully echo '<div class="success">'. $success .' • Gridview delete/edit not working when using select parameter

    - by Brian Carroll
    new to ASP.NET. I created a sqldatasource and set up basic select query (SELECT * FROM Accounts) using the wizard. I then had the sqldatasource wizard create the INSERT, EDIT and DELETE queries. Connected this datasource to a gridview with EDITING and DELETING enabled. Everything works fine. The SELECT query returns all records and I can edit/delete them. Now I need to send a parameter to the SELECT command to filter the records to those with the user's id (pulled from Membership.GetUser). When I add this parameter, the SELECT command works fine, but the EDIT/DELETE buttons in the gridview no longer work. No error is generated. The page refreshes but the records were not updated in the database. I don't understand what is wrong. CODE: <% Dim u As MembershipUser Dim userid As String u = Membership.GetUser(User.Identity.Name) userid = u.ProviderUserKey.ToString SqlDataSource1.SelectParameters("UserId").DefaultValue = userid %> <asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="False" DataKeyNames="ID" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1"> <Columns> <asp:CommandField ShowDeleteButton="True" ShowEditButton="True" /> <asp:BoundField DataField="ID" HeaderText="ID" InsertVisible="False" ReadOnly="True" SortExpression="ID" /> <asp:BoundField DataField="UserId" HeaderText="UserId" SortExpression="UserId" /> <asp:BoundField DataField="AccountName" HeaderText="AccountName" SortExpression="AccountName" /> <asp:BoundField DataField="DateAdded" HeaderText="DateAdded" SortExpression="DateAdded" /> <asp:BoundField DataField="LastModified" HeaderText="LastModified" SortExpression="LastModified" /> </Columns> </asp:GridView> <asp:SqlDataSource ID="SqlDataSource1" runat="server" ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:CheckingConnectionString %>" DeleteCommand="DELETE FROM [Accounts] WHERE [ID] = @ID" InsertCommand="INSERT INTO [Accounts] ([UserId], [AccountName], [DateAdded], [LastModified]) VALUES (@UserId, @AccountName, @DateAdded, @LastModified)" SelectCommand="SELECT * FROM [Accounts] WHERE [UserId] = @UserId" UpdateCommand="UPDATE [Accounts] SET [UserId] = @UserId, [AccountName] = @AccountName, [DateAdded] = @DateAdded, [LastModified] = @LastModified WHERE [ID] = @ID"> <DeleteParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="ID" Type="Int32" /> </DeleteParameters> <InsertParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="UserId" Type="String" /> <asp:Parameter Name="AccountName" Type="String" /> <asp:Parameter Name="DateAdded" Type="DateTime" /> <asp:Parameter Name="LastModified" Type="DateTime" /> </InsertParameters> <UpdateParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="UserId" Type="String" /> <asp:Parameter Name="AccountName" Type="String" /> <asp:Parameter Name="DateAdded" Type="DateTime" /> <asp:Parameter Name="LastModified" Type="DateTime" /> <asp:Parameter Name="ID" Type="Int32" /> </UpdateParameters> <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter Name="UserId"/> </SelectParameters> </asp:SqlDataSource>

  • Using Spring as a JPA Container

    - by sdoca
    Hi, I found this article which talks about using Spring as a JPA container: http://java.sys-con.com/node/366275 I have never used Spring before this and am trying to make this work and hope someone can help me. In the article it states that you need to annotate a Spring bean with @Transactional and methods/fields with @PersistenceContext in order to provide transaction support and to inject an entity manager. Is there something the defines a bean as a "Spring Bean"? I have a bean class which implements CRUD operations on entities using generics: @Transactional public class GenericCrudServiceBean implements GenericCrudService { @PersistenceContext(unitName="MyData") private EntityManager em; @Override @PersistenceContext public <T> T create(T t) { em.persist(t); return t; } @Override @PersistenceContext public <T> void delete(T t) { t = em.merge(t); em.remove(t); } ... ... ... @Override @PersistenceContext public List<?> findWithNamedQuery(String queryName) { return em.createNamedQuery(queryName).getResultList(); } } Originally I only had this peristence context annotation: @PersistenceContext(unitName="MyData") private EntityManager em; but had a null em when findWithNamedQuery was invoked. Then I annotated the methods as well, but em is still null (no injection?). I was wondering if this had something to do with my bean not being recognized as "Spring". I have done configuration as best I could following the directions in the article including setting the following in my context.xml file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <beans xmlns:tx="http://www.springframework.org/schema/tx" tx:schemaLocation="http://www.springframework.org/schema/tx http://www.springframework.org/schema/tx/spring-tx-2.0.xsd"> <bean id="entityManagerFactory" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.LocalContainerEntityManagerFactoryBean"> <property name="persistenceUnitName" value="MyData" /> <property name="dataSource" ref="dataSource" /> <property name="loadTimeWeaver" class="org.springframework.classloading.ReflectiveLoadTimeWeaver" /> <property name="jpaVendorAdapter" ref="jpaAdapter" /> </bean> <bean id="dataSource" class="org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource" destroy-method="close"> <property name="driverClassName" value="oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver" /> <property name="url" value="jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:MySID" /> <property name="username" value="user" /> <property name="password" value="password" /> <property name="initialSize" value="3" /> <property name="maxActive" value="10" /> </bean> <bean id="jpaAdapter" class="org.springframework.orm.jpa.vendor.EclipseLinkJpaVendorAdapter"> <property name="databasePlatform" value="org.eclipse.persistence.platform.database.OraclePlatform" /> <property name="showSql" value="true" /> </bean> <bean class="org.springframework.ormmjpa.support.PersistenceAnnotationBeanPostProcessor" /> <tx:annotation-driven /> </beans> I guessed that these belonged in the context.xml file because the article never specifically said which file is the "application context" file. If this is wrong, please let me know.

  • Trouble with client side validation using Struts 2. Xml based validation rules not recognized.

    - by Kartik
    Hi, This is my first post to ask a question on stack overflow and my issue is that when I don't see a client side validation error message when I don't enter any values for that field even when it is configured as required. The input page is reloaded but no error message is seen. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My scenario is given below: I have a simple form where I have a pull down menu called selection criterion. A value must be selected. If a value is not selected, then the page should reload with configured error message. My input form action_item_search.jsp is given below: <%@ taglib prefix="s" uri="/struts-tags" %> <%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" pageEncoding="ISO-8859-1"%> <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1" /> <title>Action Item Search</title> </head> <body> <s:actionerror/> <s:fielderror /> <s:form action="action_item_search" validate="true"> <s:select label="Search Criterion" name="searchCriterion" list="#{'': 'Select One', 'creatorName':'creator name', assignedTo':'assigned to'}" required="true" /> <s:submit name="search" value="Search"></s:submit> </s:form> </body> I have add validators.xml in my WEB-INF/classes directory of exploded war file as given below: <!DOCTYPE validators PUBLIC "-//OpenSymphony Group//XWork Validator Config 1.0//EN" "http://www.opensymphony.com/xwork/xwork-validator-config-1.0.dtd"> ActionItemTrackingAction-findByCriteria-validation.xml is given below: <!DOCTYPE validators PUBLIC "-//OpenSymphony Group//XWork Validator 1.0.2//EN" "http://www.opensymphony.com/xwork/xwork-validator-1.0.2.dtd"> You must enter a search criterion. • Passing a list of files to javac

    - by Robert Menteer
    How can I get the javac task to use an existing fileset? In my build.xml I have created several filesets to be used in multiple places throughout build file. Here is how they have been defined: <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.all"> <include name = "**/*.java" /> </fileset> <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.examples"> <include name = "**/Examples/**/*.java" /> </fileset> <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.tests"> <include name = "**/Tests/*.java" /> </fileset> <fileset dir = "${src}" id = "java.source.project"> <include name = "**/*.java" /> <exclude name = "**/Examples/**/*.java" /> <exclude name = "**/Tests/**/*.java" /> </fileset> I have also used macrodef to compile the java files so the javac task does not need to be repeated multiple times. The macro looks like this: <macrodef name="compile"> <attribute name="sourceref"/> <sequential> <javac srcdir = "${src}" destdir = "${build}" classpathref = "classpath" includeantruntime = "no" debug = "${debug}"> <filelist dir="." files="@{sourceref}" /> <-- email is about this </javac> </sequential> What I'm trying to do is compile only the classes that are needed for specific targets not all the targets in the source tree. And do so without having to specify the files every time. Here are how the targets are defined: <target name = "compile-examples" depends = "init"> <compile sourceref = "${toString:java.source.examples}" /> </target> <target name = "compile-project" depends = "init"> <compile sourceref = "${toString:java.source.project}" /> </target> <target name = "compile-tests" depends = "init"> <compile sourceref = "${toString:java.source.tests}" /> </target> As you can see each target specifies the java files to be compiled as a simi-colon separated list of absolute file names. The only problem with this is that javac does not support filelist. It also does not support fileset, path or pathset. I've tried using but it treats the list as a single file name. Another thing I tried is sending the reference directly (not using toString) and using but include does not have a ref attribute. SO THE QUESTION IS: How do you get the javac task to use a reference to a fileset that was defined in another part of the build file? I'm not interested in solutions that cause me to have multiple javac tasks. Completely re-writting the macro is acceptable. Changes to the targets are also acceptable provided redundant code between targets is kept to a minimum. p.s. Another problem is that fileset wants a comma separated list. I've only done a brief search for a way to convert semi-colons to commas and haven't found a way to do that. p.p.s. Sorry for the yelling but some people are too quick to post responses that don't address the subject.

  • Android passing an arraylist back to parent activity

    - by Nicklas O
    Hi there. I've been searching for a simple example of this with no luck. In my android application I have two activities: 1. The main activity which is launched at startup 2. A second activity which is launched by pressing a button on the main activty. When the second activity is finished (by pressing a button) I want it to send back an ArrayList of type MyObject to the main activity and close itself, which the main activity can then do whatever with it. How would I go about achieving this? I have been trying a few things but it is crashing my application when I start the second activity. When the user presses button to launch second activity: Intent i = new Intent(MainActivity.this, secondactivity.class); startActivityForResult(i, 1); The array which is bundled back after pressing a button on the second activity: Intent intent= getIntent(); Bundle b = new Bundle(); b.putParcelableArrayList("myarraylist", mylist); intent.putExtras(b); setResult(RESULT_OK, intent); finish(); And finally a listener on the main activity (although I'm not sure of 100% when this code launches...) protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) { super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data); if(resultCode==RESULT_OK && requestCode==1){ Bundle extras = data.getExtras(); final ArrayList<MyObject> mylist = extras.getParcelableArrayList("myarraylist"); Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, mylist.get(0).getName(), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); } } Any ideas where I am going wrong? The onActivityResult() seems to be crashing my application. EDIT: This is my class MyObject, its called plan and has a name and an id import android.os.Parcel; import android.os.Parcelable; public class Plan implements Parcelable{ private String name; private String id; public Plan(){ } public Plan(String name, String id){ this.name = name; this.id = id; } public String getName(){ return name; } public void setName(String name){ this.name = name; } public String getId(){ return id; } public void setId(String id){ this.id = id; } public String toString(){ return "Plan ID: " + id + " Plan Name: " + name; } @Override public int describeContents() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub return 0; } @Override public void writeToParcel(Parcel dest, int flags) { dest.writeString(id); dest.writeString(name); } public static final Parcelable.Creator<Plan> CREATOR = new Parcelable.Creator<Plan>() { public Plan createFromParcel(Parcel in) { return new Plan(); } @Override public Plan[] newArray(int size) { // TODO Auto-generated method stub return new Plan[size]; } }; } This is my logcat E/AndroidRuntime( 293): java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to instantiate activ ity ComponentInfo{com.daniel.android.groupproject/com.me.android.projec t.secondactivity}: java.lang.NullPointerException E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActiv ity(ActivityThread.java:2417) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at android.app.ActivityThread.handleLaunchActivi ty(ActivityThread.java:2512) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at android.app.ActivityThread.access$2200(Activi tyThread.java:119) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at android.app.ActivityThread$H.handleMessage(Ac tivityThread.java:1863) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.ja va:99) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThrea d.java:4363) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:5 21) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndA rgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:860) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(Zygot eInit.java:618) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at dalvik.system.NativeStart.main(Native Method) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at com.daniel.android.groupproject.login.<init>( login.java:51) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at java.lang.Class.newInstanceImpl(Native Method ) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at java.lang.Class.newInstance(Class.java:1479) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at android.app.Instrumentation.newActivity(Instr umentation.java:1021) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): at android.app.ActivityThread.performLaunchActiv ity(ActivityThread.java:2409) E/AndroidRuntime( 293): ... 11 more

  • @OneToMany association joining on the wrong field

    - by april26
    I have 2 tables, devices which contains a list of devices and dev_tags, which contains a list of asset tags for these devices. The tables join on dev_serial_num, which is the primary key of neither table. The devices are unique on their ip_address field and they have a primary key identified by dev_id. The devices "age out" after 2 weeks. Therefore, the same piece of hardware can show up more than once in devices. I mention that to explain why there is a OneToMany relationship between dev_tags and devices where it seems that this should be a OneToOne relationship. So I have my 2 entities @Entity @Table(name = "dev_tags") public class DevTags implements Serializable { private Integer tagId; private String devTagId; private String devSerialNum; private List<Devices> devices; @Id @GeneratedValue @Column(name = "tag_id") public Integer getTagId() { return tagId; } public void setTagId(Integer tagId) { this.tagId = tagId; } @Column(name="dev_tag_id") public String getDevTagId() { return devTagId; } public void setDevTagId(String devTagId) { this.devTagId = devTagId; } @Column(name="dev_serial_num") public String getDevSerialNum() { return devSerialNum; } public void setDevSerialNum(String devSerialNum) { this.devSerialNum = devSerialNum; } @OneToMany(mappedBy="devSerialNum") public List<Devices> getDevices() { return devices; } public void setDevices(List<Devices> devices) { this.devices = devices; } } and this one public class Devices implements java.io.Serializable { private Integer devId; private Integer officeId; private String devSerialNum; private String devPlatform; private String devName; private OfficeView officeView; private DevTags devTag; public Devices() { } @Id @GeneratedValue(strategy = IDENTITY) @Column(name = "dev_id", unique = true, nullable = false) public Integer getDevId() { return this.devId; } public void setDevId(Integer devId) { this.devId = devId; } @Column(name = "office_id", nullable = false, insertable=false, updatable=false) public Integer getOfficeId() { return this.officeId; } public void setOfficeId(Integer officeId) { this.officeId = officeId; } @Column(name = "dev_serial_num", nullable = false, length = 64, insertable=false, updatable=false) @NotNull @Length(max = 64) public String getDevSerialNum() { return this.devSerialNum; } public void setDevSerialNum(String devSerialNum) { this.devSerialNum = devSerialNum; } @Column(name = "dev_platform", nullable = false, length = 64) @NotNull @Length(max = 64) public String getDevPlatform() { return this.devPlatform; } public void setDevPlatform(String devPlatform) { this.devPlatform = devPlatform; } @Column(name = "dev_name") public String getDevName() { return devName; } public void setDevName(String devName) { this.devName = devName; } @ManyToOne(fetch = FetchType.LAZY) @JoinColumn(name = "office_id") public OfficeView getOfficeView() { return officeView; } public void setOfficeView(OfficeView officeView) { this.officeView = officeView; } @ManyToOne() @JoinColumn(name="dev_serial_num") public DevTags getDevTag() { return devTag; } public void setDevTag(DevTags devTag) { this.devTag = devTag; } } I messed around a lot with @JoinColumn(name=) and the mappedBy attribute of @OneToMany and I just cannot get this right. I finally got the darn thing to compile, but the query is still trying to join devices.dev_serial_num to dev_tags.tag_id, the @Id for this entity. Here is the transcript from the console: 13:12:16,970 INFO [STDOUT] Hibernate: select devices0_.office_id as office5_2_, devices0_.dev_id as dev1_2_, devices0_.dev_id as dev1_156_1_, devices0_.dev_name as dev2_156_1_, devices0_.dev_platform as dev3_156_1_, devices0_.dev_serial_num as dev4_156_1_, devices0_.office_id as office5_156_1_, devtags1_.tag_id as tag1_157_0_, devtags1_.comment as comment157_0_, devtags1_.dev_serial_num as dev3_157_0_, devtags1_.dev_tag_id as dev4_157_0_ from ond.devices devices0_ left outer join ond.dev_tags devtags1_ on devices0_.dev_serial_num=devtags1_.tag_id where devices0_.office_id=? 13:12:16,970 INFO [IntegerType] could not read column value from result set: dev4_156_1_; Invalid value for getInt() - 'FDO1129Y2U4' 13:12:16,970 WARN [JDBCExceptionReporter] SQL Error: 0, SQLState: S1009 13:12:16,970 ERROR [JDBCExceptionReporter] Invalid value for getInt() - 'FDO1129Y2U4' That value for getInt() 'FD01129Y2U4' is a serial number, definitely not an Int! What am I missing/misunderstanding here? Can I join 2 tables on any fields I want or does at least one have to be a primary key?

  • ANT: ways to include libraries and license issues

    - by Eric Tobias
    I have been trying to use Ant to compile and ready a project for distribution. I have encountered several problems along the way that I have been finally able to solve but the solution leaves me very unsatisfied. First, let me explain the set-up of the project and its dependencies. I have a project, lets call it Primary which depends on a couple of libraries such as the fantastic Guava. It also depends on another project of mine, lets call it Secondary. The Secondary project also features some dependencies, for example, JDOM2. I have referenced the Jar I build with Ant in Primary. Let me give you the interesting bits of the build.xml so you can get a picture of what I am doing: <project name="Primary" default="all" basedir="."> <property name='build' location='dist' /> <property name='application.version' value='1.0'/> <property name='application.name' value='Primary'/> <property name='distribution' value='${application.name}-${application.version}'/> <path id='compile.classpath'> <fileset dir='libs'> <include name='*.jar'/> </fileset> </path> <target name='compile' description='Compile source files.'> <javac includeantruntime="false" srcdir="src" destdir="bin"> <classpath refid='compile.classpath'/> </javac> <target> <target name='jar' description='Create a jar file for distribution.' depends="compile"> <jar destfile='${build}/${distribution}.jar'> <fileset dir="bin"/> <zipgroupfileset dir="libs" includes="*.jar"/> </jar> </target> The Secodnary project's build.xml is nearly identical except that it features a manifest as it needs to run: <target name='jar' description='Create a jar file for distribution.' depends="compile"> <jar destfile='${dist}/${distribution}.jar' basedir="${build}" > <fileset dir="${build}"/> <zipgroupfileset dir="libs" includes="*.jar"/> <manifest> <attribute name="Main-Class" value="lu.tudor.ssi.kiss.climate.ClimateChange"/> </manifest> </jar> </target> After I got it working, trying for many hours to not include that dependencies as class files but as Jars, I don't have the time or insight to go back and try to figure out what I did wrong. Furthermore, I believe that including these libraries as class files is bad practice as it could give rise to licensing issues while not packaging them and merely including them in a directory along the build Jar would most probably not (And if it would you could choose not to distribute them yourself). I think my inability to correctly assemble the class path, I always received NoClassDefFoundError for classes or libraries in the Primary project when launching Second's Jar, is that I am not very experienced with Ant. Would I require to specify a class path for both projects? Specifying the class path as . should have allowed me to simply add all dependencies to the same folder as Secondary's Jar, should it not?

  • Very simple shopping cart, remove button

    - by Kynian
    Im writing sales software that will be walking through a set of pages and on certain pages there are items listed to sell and when you click buy it basically just passes a hidden variable to the next page to be set as a session variable, and then when you get to the end it call gets reported to a database. However my employer wanted me to include a shopping cart, and this shopping cart should display the item name, sku, and price of whatever you're buying, as well as a remove button so the person doing the script doesnt need to go back through the entire thing to remove one item. At the moment I have the cart set to display everything, which was fairly simple. but I cant figure out how to get the remove button to work. Here is the code for the shopping cart: $total = 0; //TEST CODE: $_SESSION['itemname-addon'] = "Test addon"; $_SESSION ['price-addon'] = 10.00; $_SESSION ['sku-addon'] = "1234h"; $_SESSION['itemname-addon1'] = "Test addon1"; $_SESSION ['price-addon1'] = 99.90; $_SESSION ['sku-addon1'] = "1111"; $_SESSION['itemname-addon2'] = "Test addon2"; $_SESSION ['price-addon2'] = 19.10; $_SESSION ['sku-addon2'] = "123"; //end test code $items = Array ( "0"=> Array ( "name" => $_SESSION['itemname-mo'], "price" => $_SESSION ['price-mo'], "sku" => $_SESSION ['sku-mo'] ), "1" => Array ( "name" => $_SESSION['itemname-addon'], "price" => $_SESSION ['price-addon'], "sku" => $_SESSION ['sku-addon'] ), "2" => Array ( "name" => $_SESSION['itemname-addon1'], "price" => $_SESSION ['price-addon1'], "sku" => $_SESSION ['sku-addon1'] ), "3" => Array ( "name" => $_SESSION['itemname-addon2'], "price" => $_SESSION ['price-addon2'], "sku" => $_SESSION ['sku-addon2'] ) ); $a_length = count($items); for($x = 0; $x<$a_length; $x++){ $total +=$items[$x]['price']; } $formattedtotal = number_format($total,2,'.',''); for($i = 0; $i < $a_length; $i++){ $name = $items[$i]['name']; $price = $items[$i]['price']; $sku = $items[$i]['sku']; displaycart($name,$price,$sku); } echo "<br /> <b>Sub Total:</b> $$formattedtotal"; function displaycart($name,$price,$sku){ if($name != null || $price != null || $sku != null){ if ($name == "no sale" || $price == "no sale" || $sku == "no sale"){ echo ""; } else{ $formattedprice = number_format($price,2,'.',''); echo "$name: $$formattedprice ($sku)"; echo "<form action=\"\" method=\"post\">"; echo "<button type=\"submit\" />Remove</button><br />"; echo "</form>"; } } } So at this point Im not sure where to go from here for the remove button. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Tablesorter - filter inside input fields and values

    - by Zeracoke
    I have a small quest to accomplish, and I reached a point when nothing works... So the problem is. I have a paged table with a lot of input fields inside the rows with values, and I would like to search inside these values. Let me Show this, I hope that somebody will got the idea what I should do... <script type="text/javascript"> // add parser through the tablesorter addParser method $.tablesorter.addParser({ id: 'inputs', is: function(s) { return false; }, format: function(s, table, cell, cellIndex) { var $c = $(cell); // return 1 for true, 2 for false, so true sorts before false if (!$c.hasClass('updateInput')) { $c .addClass('updateInput') .bind('keyup', function() { $(table).trigger('updateCell', [cell, false]); // false to prevent resort }); } return $c.find('input').val(); }, type: 'text' }); $(function() { $('table').tablesorter({ widgets: ['zebra', 'stickyHeaders', 'resizable', 'filter'], widgetOptions: { stickyHeaders : '', // number or jquery selector targeting the position:fixed element stickyHeaders_offset : 110, // added to table ID, if it exists stickyHeaders_cloneId : '-sticky', // trigger "resize" event on headers stickyHeaders_addResizeEvent : true, // if false and a caption exist, it won't be included in the sticky header stickyHeaders_includeCaption : true, // The zIndex of the stickyHeaders, allows the user to adjust this to their needs stickyHeaders_zIndex : 2, // jQuery selector or object to attach sticky header to stickyHeaders_attachTo : null, // scroll table top into view after filtering stickyHeaders_filteredToTop: true, resizable: true, filter_onlyAvail : 'filter-onlyAvail', filter_childRows : true, filter_startsWith : true, filter_useParsedData : true, filter_defaultAttrib : 'data-value' }, headers: { 1: {sorter: 'inputs', width: '50px'}, 2: {sorter: 'inputs'}, 3: {sorter: 'inputs'}, 4: {sorter: 'inputs'}, 5: {sorter: 'inputs'}, 6: {sorter: 'inputs'}, 7: {sorter: 'inputs', width: '100px'}, 8: {sorter: 'inputs', width: '140px'}, 9: {sorter: 'inputs'}, 10: {sorter: 'inputs'}, 11: {sorter: 'inputs'}, } }); $('table').tablesorterPager({container: $(".pager"), positionFixed: false, size: 50, pageDisplay : $(".pagedisplay"), pageSize : $(".pagesize"), }); $("#table1").tablesorter(options); /* make second table scroll within its wrapper */ options.widgetOptions.stickyHeaders_attachTo = '.wrapper'; // or $('.wrapper') $("#table2").tablesorter(options); }); </script> The structure of the tables: <tr class="odd" style="display: table-row;"> <form action="/self.php" method="POST"> </form><input type="hidden" name="f" value="data"> <td><input type="hidden" name="mod_id" value="741">741</td> <td class="updateInput"><input type="text" name="name" value="Test User Name"></td> <td class="updateInput"><input type="text" name="address" value="2548451 Random address"></td> <td class="updateInput"><input type="email" name="email" value=""></td> <td class="updateInput"><input type="text" name="entitlement" value="none"></td> <td class="updateInput"><input type="text" name="card_number" value="6846416548644352"></td> <td class="updateInput"><input type="checkbox" name="verify" value="1" checked=""></td> <td class="updateInput"><input type="checkbox" name="card_sended" value="1" checked=""></td> <td class="updateInput"><input type="text" name="create_date" value="2014-02-12 21:09:16"></td> <td class="updateInput"><a href="self.php?f=data&amp;del=741">X</a></td> <td class="updateInput"><input type="submit" value="SAVE"></td><td class="updateInput"></td></tr> So the thing is I don't know how to configure the filter to search these values... I already added some options, but none of them are working... Any help would be great!

  • Can I create an xml that specifies element from 2 nested xsd's without using a prefixes?

    - by TweeZz
    I have 2 xsd's which are nested: DefaultSchema.xsd: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <xs:schema id="DefaultSchema" targetNamespace="http://myNamespace.com/DefaultSchema.xsd" elementFormDefault="qualified" xmlns="http://myNamespace.com/DefaultSchema.xsd" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" > <xs:complexType name="ZForm"> <xs:sequence minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded"> <xs:element name="Part" minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded" type="Part"/> </xs:sequence> <xs:attribute name="Title" use="required" type="xs:string"/> <xs:attribute name="Version" type="xs:int"/> </xs:complexType> <xs:complexType name="Part"> <xs:sequence minOccurs="0" maxOccurs="unbounded"> <xs:element name="Label" type="Label" minOccurs="0"></xs:element> </xs:sequence> <xs:attribute name="Title" use="required" type="xs:string"/> </xs:complexType> <xs:complexType name="Label"> <xs:simpleContent> <xs:extension base="xs:string"> <xs:attribute name="Title" type="xs:string"/> </xs:extension> </xs:simpleContent> </xs:complexType> </xs:schema> ExportSchema.xsd: (this one kinda wraps 1 more element (ZForms) around the main element (ZForm) of the DefaultSchema) <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <xs:schema id="ExportSchema" targetNamespace="http://myNamespace.com/ExportSchema.xsd" elementFormDefault="qualified" xmlns="http://myNamespace.com/DefaultSchema.xsd" xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:es="http://myNamespace.com/ExportSchema.xsd" > <xs:import namespace="http://myNamespace.com/DefaultSchema.xsd" schemaLocation="DefaultSchema.xsd"/> <xs:element name="ZForms" type="es:ZFormType"></xs:element> <xs:complexType name="ZFormType"> <xs:sequence> <xs:element name="ZForm" type="ZForm" maxOccurs="unbounded" /> </xs:sequence> </xs:complexType> </xs:schema> And then finally I have a generated xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <ZForms xmlns="http://myNamespace.com/ExportSchema.xsd"> <ZForm Version="1" Title="FormTitle"> <Part Title="PartTitle" > <Label Title="LabelTitle" /> </Part> </ZForm> </ZForms> Visual studio complains it doesn't know what 'Part' is. I was hoping I do not need to use xml namespace prefixes (..) to make this xml validate, since ExportSchema.xsd has a reference to the DefaultSChema.xsd. Is there any way to make that xml structure valid without explicitly specifying the DefaultSchema.xsd? Or is this a no go?

  • model binding of non-sequential arrays

    - by user281180
    I am having a table in which i`m dynamically creating and deleting rows. How can I change the code such that the rows be added and deleted and the model info property filled accordingly. Bearing in mind that the rows can be dynamically created and deleted, I may have Info[0], Inf0[3], info[4]... My objective is to be able to bind the array even if it`s not in sequence. • Passing multiple simple POST Values to ASP.NET Web API

    - by Rick Strahl
    A few weeks backs I posted a blog post  about what does and doesn't work with ASP.NET Web API when it comes to POSTing data to a Web API controller. One of the features that doesn't work out of the box - somewhat unexpectedly -  is the ability to map POST form variables to simple parameters of a Web API method. For example imagine you have this form and you want to post this data to a Web API end point like this via AJAX: <form> Name: <input type="name" name="name" value="Rick" /> Value: <input type="value" name="value" value="12" /> Entered: <input type="entered" name="entered" value="12/01/2011" /> <input type="button" id="btnSend" value="Send" /> </form> <script type="text/javascript"> $("#btnSend").click( function() { $.post("samples/PostMultipleSimpleValues?action=kazam", $("form").serialize(), function (result) { alert(result); }); }); </script> or you might do this more explicitly by creating a simple client map and specifying the POST values directly by hand:$.post("samples/PostMultipleSimpleValues?action=kazam", { name: "Rick", value: 1, entered: "12/01/2012" }, $("form").serialize(), function (result) { alert(result); }); On the wire this generates a simple POST request with Url Encoded values in the content:POST /AspNetWebApi/samples/PostMultipleSimpleValues?action=kazam HTTP/1.1 Host: localhost User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.2; WOW64; rv:15.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/15.0.1 Accept: application/json Connection: keep-alive Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded; charset=UTF-8 X-Requested-With: XMLHttpRequest Referer: http://localhost/AspNetWebApi/FormPostTest.html Content-Length: 41 Pragma: no-cache Cache-Control: no-cachename=Rick&value=12&entered=12%2F10%2F2011 Seems simple enough, right? We are basically posting 3 form variables and 1 query string value to the server. Unfortunately Web API can't handle request out of the box. If I create a method like this:[HttpPost] public string PostMultipleSimpleValues(string name, int value, DateTime entered, string action = null) { return string.Format("Name: {0}, Value: {1}, Date: {2}, Action: {3}", name, value, entered, action); }You'll find that you get an HTTP 404 error and { "Message": "No HTTP resource was found that matches the request URI…"} Yes, it's possible to pass multiple POST parameters of course, but Web API expects you to use Model Binding for this - mapping the post parameters to a strongly typed .NET object, not to single parameters. Alternately you can also accept a FormDataCollection parameter on your API method to get a name value collection of all POSTed values. If you're using JSON only, using the dynamic JObject/JValue objects might also work. ModelBinding is fine in many use cases, but can quickly become overkill if you only need to pass a couple of simple parameters to many methods. Especially in applications with many, many AJAX callbacks the 'parameter mapping type' per method signature can lead to serious class pollution in a project very quickly. Simple POST variables are also commonly used in AJAX applications to pass data to the server, even in many complex public APIs. So this is not an uncommon use case, and - maybe more so a behavior that I would have expected Web API to support natively. The question "Why aren't my POST parameters mapping to Web API method parameters" is already a frequent one… So this is something that I think is fairly important, but unfortunately missing in the base Web API installation. Creating a Custom Parameter Binder Luckily Web API is greatly extensible and there's a way to create a custom Parameter Binding to provide this functionality! Although this solution took me a long while to find and then only with the help of some folks Microsoft (thanks Hong Mei!!!), it's not difficult to hook up in your own projects. It requires one small class and a GlobalConfiguration hookup. Web API parameter bindings allow you to intercept processing of individual parameters - they deal with mapping parameters to the signature as well as converting the parameters to the actual values that are returned. Here's the implementation of the SimplePostVariableParameterBinding class:public class SimplePostVariableParameterBinding : HttpParameterBinding { private const string MultipleBodyParameters = "MultipleBodyParameters"; public SimplePostVariableParameterBinding(HttpParameterDescriptor descriptor) : base(descriptor) { } /// <summary> /// Check for simple binding parameters in POST data. Bind POST /// data as well as query string data /// </summary> public override Task ExecuteBindingAsync(ModelMetadataProvider metadataProvider, HttpActionContext actionContext, CancellationToken cancellationToken) { // Body can only be read once, so read and cache it NameValueCollection col = TryReadBody(actionContext.Request); string stringValue = null; if (col != null) stringValue = col[Descriptor.ParameterName]; // try reading query string if we have no POST/PUT match if (stringValue == null) { var query = actionContext.Request.GetQueryNameValuePairs(); if (query != null) { var matches = query.Where(kv => kv.Key.ToLower() == Descriptor.ParameterName.ToLower()); if (matches.Count() > 0) stringValue = matches.First().Value; } } object value = StringToType(stringValue); // Set the binding result here SetValue(actionContext, value); // now, we can return a completed task with no result TaskCompletionSource<AsyncVoid> tcs = new TaskCompletionSource<AsyncVoid>(); tcs.SetResult(default(AsyncVoid)); return tcs.Task; } private object StringToType(string stringValue) { object value = null; if (stringValue == null) value = null; else if (Descriptor.ParameterType == typeof(string)) value = stringValue; else if (Descriptor.ParameterType == typeof(int)) value = int.Parse(stringValue, CultureInfo.CurrentCulture); else if (Descriptor.ParameterType == typeof(Int32)) value = Int32.Parse(stringValue, CultureInfo.CurrentCulture); else if (Descriptor.ParameterType == typeof(Int64)) value = Int64.Parse(stringValue, CultureInfo.CurrentCulture); else if (Descriptor.ParameterType == typeof(decimal)) value = decimal.Parse(stringValue, CultureInfo.CurrentCulture); else if (Descriptor.ParameterType == typeof(double)) value = double.Parse(stringValue, CultureInfo.CurrentCulture); else if (Descriptor.ParameterType == typeof(DateTime)) value = DateTime.Parse(stringValue, CultureInfo.CurrentCulture); else if (Descriptor.ParameterType == typeof(bool)) { value = false; if (stringValue == "true" || stringValue == "on" || stringValue == "1") value = true; } else value = stringValue; return value; } /// <summary> /// Read and cache the request body /// </summary> /// <param name="request"></param> /// <returns></returns> private NameValueCollection TryReadBody(HttpRequestMessage request) { object result = null; // try to read out of cache first if (!request.Properties.TryGetValue(MultipleBodyParameters, out result)) { // parsing the string like firstname=Hongmei&lastname=Ge result = request.Content.ReadAsFormDataAsync().Result; request.Properties.Add(MultipleBodyParameters, result); } return result as NameValueCollection; } private struct AsyncVoid { } }   The ExecuteBindingAsync method is fired for each parameter that is mapped and sent for conversion. This custom binding is fired only if the incoming parameter is a simple type (that gets defined later when I hook up the binding), so this binding never fires on complex types or if the first type is not a simple type. For the first parameter of a request the Binding first reads the request body into a NameValueCollection and caches that in the request.Properties collection. The request body can only be read once, so the first parameter request reads it and then caches it. Subsequent parameters then use the cached POST value collection. Once the form collection is available the value of the parameter is read, and the value is translated into the target type requested by the Descriptor. SetValue writes out the value to be mapped. Once you have the ParameterBinding in place, the binding has to be assigned. This is done along with all other Web API configuration tasks at application startup in global.asax's Application_Start:GlobalConfiguration.Configuration.ParameterBindingRules .Insert(0, (HttpParameterDescriptor descriptor) => { var supportedMethods = descriptor.ActionDescriptor.SupportedHttpMethods; // Only apply this binder on POST and PUT operations if (supportedMethods.Contains(HttpMethod.Post) || supportedMethods.Contains(HttpMethod.Put)) { var supportedTypes = new Type[] { typeof(string), typeof(int), typeof(decimal), typeof(double), typeof(bool), typeof(DateTime) }; if (supportedTypes.Where(typ => typ == descriptor.ParameterType).Count() > 0) return new SimplePostVariableParameterBinding(descriptor); } // let the default bindings do their work return null; });   The ParameterBindingRules.Insert method takes a delegate that checks which type of requests it should handle. The logic here checks whether the request is POST or PUT and whether the parameter type is a simple type that is supported. Web API calls this delegate once for each method signature it tries to map and the delegate returns null to indicate it's not handling this parameter, or it returns a new parameter binding instance - in this case the SimplePostVariableParameterBinding. Once the parameter binding and this hook up code is in place, you can now pass simple POST values to methods with simple parameters. The examples I showed above should now work in addition to the standard bindings. Summary Clearly this is not easy to discover. I spent quite a bit of time digging through the Web API source trying to figure this out on my own without much luck. It took Hong Mei at Micrsoft to provide a base example as I asked around so I can't take credit for this solution :-). But once you know where to look, Web API is brilliantly extensible to make it relatively easy to customize the parameter behavior. I'm very stoked that this got resolved  - in the last two months I've had two customers with projects that decided not to use Web API in AJAX heavy SPA applications because this POST variable mapping wasn't available. This might actually change their mind to still switch back and take advantage of the many great features in Web API. I too frequently use plain POST variables for communicating with server AJAX handlers and while I could have worked around this (with untyped JObject or the Form collection mostly), having proper POST to parameter mapping makes things much easier. I said this in my last post on POST data and say it again here: I think POST to method parameter mapping should have been shipped in the box with Web API, because without knowing about this limitation the expectation is that simple POST variables map to parameters just like query string values do. I hope Microsoft considers including this type of functionality natively in the next version of Web API natively or at least as a built-in HttpParameterBinding that can be just added. This is especially true, since this binding doesn't affect existing bindings. • Creating a JSONP Formatter for ASP.NET Web API

    - by Rick Strahl
    Out of the box ASP.NET WebAPI does not include a JSONP formatter, but it's actually very easy to create a custom formatter that implements this functionality. JSONP is one way to allow Browser based JavaScript client applications to bypass cross-site scripting limitations and serve data from the non-current Web server. AJAX in Web Applications uses the XmlHttp object which by default doesn't allow access to remote domains. There are number of ways around this limitation <script> tag loading and JSONP is one of the easiest and semi-official ways that you can do this. JSONP works by combining JSON data and wrapping it into a function call that is executed when the JSONP data is returned. If you use a tool like jQUery it's extremely easy to access JSONP content. Imagine that you have a URL like this: http://RemoteDomain/aspnetWebApi/albums which on an HTTP GET serves some data - in this case an array of record albums. This URL is always directly accessible from an AJAX request if the URL is on the same domain as the parent request. However, if that URL lives on a separate server it won't be easily accessible to an AJAX request. Now, if  the server can serve up JSONP this data can be accessed cross domain from a browser client. Using jQuery it's really easy to retrieve the same data with JSONP:function getAlbums() { $.getJSON("http://remotedomain/aspnetWebApi/albums?callback=?",null, function (albums) { alert(albums.length); }); } The resulting callback the same as if the call was to a local server when the data is returned. jQuery deserializes the data and feeds it into the method. Here the array is received and I simply echo back the number of items returned. From here your app is ready to use the data as needed. This all works fine - as long as the server can serve the data with JSONP. What does JSONP look like? JSONP is a pretty simple 'protocol'. All it does is wrap a JSON response with a JavaScript function call. The above result from the JSONP call looks like this:Query17103401925975181569_1333408916499( [{"Id":"34043957","AlbumName":"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap",…},{…}] ) The way JSONP works is that the client (jQuery in this case) sends of the request, receives the response and evals it. The eval basically executes the function and deserializes the JSON inside of the function. It's actually a little more complex for the framework that does this, but that's the gist of what happens. JSONP works by executing the code that gets returned from the JSONP call. JSONP and ASP.NET Web API As mentioned previously, JSONP support is not natively in the box with ASP.NET Web API. But it's pretty easy to create and plug-in a custom formatter that provides this functionality. The following code is based on Christian Weyers example but has been updated to the latest Web API CodePlex bits, which changes the implementation a bit due to the way dependent objects are exposed differently in the latest builds. Here's the code:  using System; using System.IO; using System.Net; using System.Net.Http.Formatting; using System.Net.Http.Headers; using System.Threading.Tasks; using System.Web; using System.Net.Http; namespace Westwind.Web.WebApi { /// <summary> /// Handles JsonP requests when requests are fired with /// text/javascript or application/json and contain /// a callback= (configurable) query string parameter /// /// Based on Christian Weyers implementation /// https://github.com/thinktecture/Thinktecture.Web.Http/blob/master/Thinktecture.Web.Http/Formatters/JsonpFormatter.cs /// </summary> public class JsonpFormatter : JsonMediaTypeFormatter { public JsonpFormatter() { SupportedMediaTypes.Add(new MediaTypeHeaderValue("application/json")); SupportedMediaTypes.Add(new MediaTypeHeaderValue("text/javascript")); //MediaTypeMappings.Add(new UriPathExtensionMapping("jsonp", "application/json")); JsonpParameterName = "callback"; } /// <summary> /// Name of the query string parameter to look for /// the jsonp function name /// </summary> public string JsonpParameterName {get; set; } /// <summary> /// Captured name of the Jsonp function that the JSON call /// is wrapped in. Set in GetPerRequestFormatter Instance /// </summary> private string JsonpCallbackFunction; public override bool CanWriteType(Type type) { return true; } /// <summary> /// Override this method to capture the Request object /// and look for the query string parameter and /// create a new instance of this formatter. /// /// This is the only place in a formatter where the /// Request object is available. /// </summary> /// <param name="type"></param> /// <param name="request"></param> /// <param name="mediaType"></param> /// <returns></returns> public override MediaTypeFormatter GetPerRequestFormatterInstance(Type type, HttpRequestMessage request, MediaTypeHeaderValue mediaType) { var formatter = new JsonpFormatter() { JsonpCallbackFunction = GetJsonCallbackFunction(request) }; return formatter; } /// <summary> /// Override to wrap existing JSON result with the /// JSONP function call /// </summary> /// <param name="type"></param> /// <param name="value"></param> /// <param name="stream"></param> /// <param name="contentHeaders"></param> /// <param name="transportContext"></param> /// <returns></returns> public override Task WriteToStreamAsync(Type type, object value, Stream stream, HttpContentHeaders contentHeaders, TransportContext transportContext) { if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(JsonpCallbackFunction)) { return Task.Factory.StartNew(() => { var writer = new StreamWriter(stream); writer.Write( JsonpCallbackFunction + "("); writer.Flush(); base.WriteToStreamAsync(type, value, stream, contentHeaders, transportContext).Wait(); writer.Write(")"); writer.Flush(); }); } else { return base.WriteToStreamAsync(type, value, stream, contentHeaders, transportContext); } } /// <summary> /// Retrieves the Jsonp Callback function /// from the query string /// </summary> /// <returns></returns> private string GetJsonCallbackFunction(HttpRequestMessage request) { if (request.Method != HttpMethod.Get) return null; var query = HttpUtility.ParseQueryString(request.RequestUri.Query); var queryVal = query[this.JsonpParameterName]; if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(queryVal)) return null; return queryVal; } } } Note again that this code will not work with the Beta bits of Web API - it works only with post beta bits from CodePlex and hopefully this will continue to work until RTM :-) This code is a bit different from Christians original code as the API has changed. The biggest change is that the Read/Write functions no longer receive a global context object that gives access to the Request and Response objects as the older bits did. Instead you now have to override the GetPerRequestFormatterInstance() method, which receives the Request as a parameter. You can capture the Request there, or use the request to pick up the values you need and store them on the formatter. Note that I also have to create a new instance of the formatter since I'm storing request specific state on the instance (information whether the callback= querystring is present) so I return a new instance of this formatter. Other than that the code should be straight forward: The code basically writes out the function pre- and post-amble and the defers to the base stream to retrieve the JSON to wrap the function call into. The code uses the Async APIs to write this data out (this will take some getting used to seeing all over the place for me). Hooking up the JsonpFormatter Once you've created a formatter, it has to be added to the request processing sequence by adding it to the formatter collection. Web API is configured via the static GlobalConfiguration object.  protected void Application_Start(object sender, EventArgs e) { // Verb Routing RouteTable.Routes.MapHttpRoute( name: "AlbumsVerbs", routeTemplate: "albums/{title}", defaults: new { title = RouteParameter.Optional, controller = "AlbumApi" } ); GlobalConfiguration .Configuration .Formatters .Insert(0, new Westwind.Web.WebApi.JsonpFormatter()); }   That's all it takes. Note that I added the formatter at the top of the list of formatters, rather than adding it to the end which is required. The JSONP formatter needs to fire before any other JSON formatter since it relies on the JSON formatter to encode the actual JSON data. If you reverse the order the JSONP output never shows up. So, in general when adding new formatters also try to be aware of the order of the formatters as they are added. • SSIS – Delete all files except for the most recent one

    - by jorg
    Quite often one or more sources for a data warehouse consist of flat files. Most of the times these files are delivered as a zip file with a date in the file name, for example FinanceDataExport_20100528.zip Currently I work at a project that does a full load into the data warehouse every night. A zip file with some flat files in it is dropped in a directory on a daily basis. Sometimes there are multiple zip files in the directory, this can happen because the ETL failed or somebody puts a new zip file in the directory manually. Because the ETL isn’t incremental only the most recent file needs to be loaded. To implement this I used the simple code below; it checks which file is the most recent and deletes all other files. Note: In a previous blog post I wrote about unzipping zip files within SSIS, you might also find this useful: SSIS – Unpack a ZIP file with the Script Task Public Sub Main() 'Use this piece of code to loop through a set of files in a directory 'and delete all files except for the most recent one based on a date in the filename. 'File name example: 'DataExport_20100413.zip Dim rootDirectory As New DirectoryInfo(Dts.Variables("DirectoryFromSsisVariable").Value.ToString) Dim mostRecentFile As String = "" Dim currentFileDate As Integer Dim mostRecentFileDate As Integer = 0 'Check which file is the most recent For Each fi As FileInfo In rootDirectory.GetFiles("*.zip") currentFileDate = CInt(Left(Right(fi.Name, 12), 8)) 'Get date from current filename (based on a file that ends with: YYYYMMDD.zip) If currentFileDate > mostRecentFileDate Then mostRecentFileDate = currentFileDate mostRecentFile = fi.Name End If Next 'Delete all files except the most recent one For Each fi As FileInfo In rootDirectory.GetFiles("*.zip") If fi.Name <> mostRecentFile Then File.Delete(rootDirectory.ToString + "\" + fi.Name) End If Next Dts.TaskResult = ScriptResults.Success End Sub Share this post: email it! | bookmark it! | digg it! | reddit! | kick it! | live it!

  • Escaping Generics with T4 Templates

    - by Gavin Stevens
    I've been doing some work with T4 templates lately and ran into an issue which I couldn't find an answer to anywhere.  I finally figured it out, so I thought I'd share the solution. I was trying to generate a code class with a T4 template which used generics The end result a method like: public IEnumerator GetEnumerator()             {                 return new TableEnumerator<Table>(_page);             } the related section of the T4 template looks like this:  public IEnumerator GetEnumerator()             {                 return new TableEnumerator<#=renderClass.Name#>(_page);             } But this of course is missing the Generic Syntax for < > which T4 complains about because < > are reserved. using syntax like <#<#><#=renderClass.Name#><#=<#> won't work becasue the TextTransformation engine chokes on them.  resulting in : Error 2 The number of opening brackets ('<#') does not match the number of closing brackets ('#>')  even trying to escape the characters won't work: <#\<#><#=renderClass.Name#><#\<#> this results in: Error 4 A Statement cannot appear after the first class feature in the template. Only boilerplate, expressions and other class features are allowed after the first class feature block.  The final solution delcares a few strings to represent the literals like this: <#+    void RenderCollectionEnumerator(RenderCollection renderClass)  {     string open = "<";   string close =">"; #>    public partial class <#=renderClass.Name#> : IEnumerable         {             private readonly PageBase _page;             public <#=renderClass.Name#>(PageBase page)             {                 _page = page;             }             public IEnumerator GetEnumerator()             {                 return new TableEnumerator<#=open#><#=renderClass.Name#><#=close#>(_page);             }         } <#+  }  #> This works, and everyone is happy, resulting in an automatically generated class enumerator, complete with generics! Hopefully this will save someone some time :)

  • SQL Spatial: Getting “nearest” calculations working properly

    - by Rob Farley
    If you’ve ever done spatial work with SQL Server, I hope you’ve come across the ‘nearest’ problem. You have five thousand stores around the world, and you want to identify the one that’s closest to a particular place. Maybe you want the store closest to the LobsterPot office in Adelaide, at -34.925806, 138.605073. Or our new US office, at 42.524929, -87.858244. Or maybe both! You know how to do this. You don’t want to use an aggregate MIN or MAX, because you want the whole row, telling you which store it is. You want to use TOP, and if you want to find the closest store for multiple locations, you use APPLY. Let’s do this (but I’m going to use addresses in AdventureWorks2012, as I don’t have a list of stores). Oh, and before I do, let’s make sure we have a spatial index in place. I’m going to use the default options. CREATE SPATIAL INDEX spin_Address ON Person.Address(SpatialLocation); And my actual query: WITH MyLocations AS (SELECT * FROM (VALUES ('LobsterPot Adelaide', geography::Point(-34.925806, 138.605073, 4326)),                        ('LobsterPot USA', geography::Point(42.524929, -87.858244, 4326))                ) t (Name, Geo)) SELECT l.Name, a.AddressLine1, a.City, s.Name AS [State], c.Name AS Country FROM MyLocations AS l CROSS APPLY (     SELECT TOP (1) *     FROM Person.Address AS ad     ORDER BY l.Geo.STDistance(ad.SpatialLocation)     ) AS a JOIN Person.StateProvince AS s     ON s.StateProvinceID = a.StateProvinceID JOIN Person.CountryRegion AS c     ON c.CountryRegionCode = s.CountryRegionCode ; Great! This is definitely working. I know both those City locations, even if the AddressLine1s don’t quite ring a bell. I’m sure I’ll be able to find them next time I’m in the area. But of course what I’m concerned about from a querying perspective is what’s happened behind the scenes – the execution plan. This isn’t pretty. It’s not using my index. It’s sucking every row out of the Address table TWICE (which sucks), and then it’s sorting them by the distance to find the smallest one. It’s not pretty, and it takes a while. Mind you, I do like the fact that it saw an indexed view it could use for the State and Country details – that’s pretty neat. But yeah – users of my nifty website aren’t going to like how long that query takes. The frustrating thing is that I know that I can use the index to find locations that are within a particular distance of my locations quite easily, and Microsoft recommends this for solving the ‘nearest’ problem, as described at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-au/library/ff929109.aspx. Now, in the first example on this page, it says that the query there will use the spatial index. But when I run it on my machine, it does nothing of the sort. I’m not particularly impressed. But what we see here is that parallelism has kicked in. In my scenario, it’s split the data up into 4 threads, but it’s still slow, and not using my index. It’s disappointing. But I can persuade it with hints! If I tell it to FORCESEEK, or use my index, or even turn off the parallelism with MAXDOP 1, then I get the index being used, and it’s a thing of beauty! Part of the plan is here: It’s massive, and it’s ugly, and it uses a TVF… but it’s quick. The way it works is to hook into the GeodeticTessellation function, which is essentially finds where the point is, and works out through the spatial index cells that surround it. This then provides a framework to be able to see into the spatial index for the items we want. You can read more about it at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb895265.aspx#tessellation – including a bunch of pretty diagrams. One of those times when we have a much more complex-looking plan, but just because of the good that’s going on. This tessellation stuff was introduced in SQL Server 2012. But my query isn’t using it. When I try to use the FORCESEEK hint on the Person.Address table, I get the friendly error: Msg 8622, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Query processor could not produce a query plan because of the hints defined in this query. Resubmit the query without specifying any hints and without using SET FORCEPLAN. And I’m almost tempted to just give up and move back to the old method of checking increasingly large circles around my location. After all, I can even leverage multiple OUTER APPLY clauses just like I did in my recent Lookup post. WITH MyLocations AS (SELECT * FROM (VALUES ('LobsterPot Adelaide', geography::Point(-34.925806, 138.605073, 4326)),                        ('LobsterPot USA', geography::Point(42.524929, -87.858244, 4326))                ) t (Name, Geo)) SELECT     l.Name,     COALESCE(a1.AddressLine1,a2.AddressLine1,a3.AddressLine1),     COALESCE(a1.City,a2.City,a3.City),     s.Name AS [State],     c.Name AS Country FROM MyLocations AS l OUTER APPLY (     SELECT TOP (1) *     FROM Person.Address AS ad     WHERE l.Geo.STDistance(ad.SpatialLocation) < 1000     ORDER BY l.Geo.STDistance(ad.SpatialLocation)     ) AS a1 OUTER APPLY (     SELECT TOP (1) *     FROM Person.Address AS ad     WHERE l.Geo.STDistance(ad.SpatialLocation) < 5000     AND a1.AddressID IS NULL     ORDER BY l.Geo.STDistance(ad.SpatialLocation)     ) AS a2 OUTER APPLY (     SELECT TOP (1) *     FROM Person.Address AS ad     WHERE l.Geo.STDistance(ad.SpatialLocation) < 20000     AND a2.AddressID IS NULL     ORDER BY l.Geo.STDistance(ad.SpatialLocation)     ) AS a3 JOIN Person.StateProvince AS s     ON s.StateProvinceID = COALESCE(a1.StateProvinceID,a2.StateProvinceID,a3.StateProvinceID) JOIN Person.CountryRegion AS c     ON c.CountryRegionCode = s.CountryRegionCode ; But this isn’t friendly-looking at all, and I’d use the method recommended by Isaac Kunen, who uses a table of numbers for the expanding circles. It feels old-school though, when I’m dealing with SQL 2012 (and later) versions. So why isn’t my query doing what it’s supposed to? Remember the query... WITH MyLocations AS (SELECT * FROM (VALUES ('LobsterPot Adelaide', geography::Point(-34.925806, 138.605073, 4326)),                        ('LobsterPot USA', geography::Point(42.524929, -87.858244, 4326))                ) t (Name, Geo)) SELECT l.Name, a.AddressLine1, a.City, s.Name AS [State], c.Name AS Country FROM MyLocations AS l CROSS APPLY (     SELECT TOP (1) *     FROM Person.Address AS ad     ORDER BY l.Geo.STDistance(ad.SpatialLocation)     ) AS a JOIN Person.StateProvince AS s     ON s.StateProvinceID = a.StateProvinceID JOIN Person.CountryRegion AS c     ON c.CountryRegionCode = s.CountryRegionCode ; Well, I just wasn’t reading http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff929109.aspx properly. The following requirements must be met for a Nearest Neighbor query to use a spatial index: A spatial index must be present on one of the spatial columns and the STDistance() method must use that column in the WHERE and ORDER BY clauses. The TOP clause cannot contain a PERCENT statement. The WHERE clause must contain a STDistance() method. If there are multiple predicates in the WHERE clause then the predicate containing STDistance() method must be connected by an AND conjunction to the other predicates. The STDistance() method cannot be in an optional part of the WHERE clause. The first expression in the ORDER BY clause must use the STDistance() method. Sort order for the first STDistance() expression in the ORDER BY clause must be ASC. All the rows for which STDistance returns NULL must be filtered out. Let’s start from the top. 1. Needs a spatial index on one of the columns that’s in the STDistance call. Yup, got the index. 2. No ‘PERCENT’. Yeah, I don’t have that. 3. The WHERE clause needs to use STDistance(). Ok, but I’m not filtering, so that should be fine. 4. Yeah, I don’t have multiple predicates. 5. The first expression in the ORDER BY is my distance, that’s fine. 6. Sort order is ASC, because otherwise we’d be starting with the ones that are furthest away, and that’s tricky. 7. All the rows for which STDistance returns NULL must be filtered out. But I don’t have any NULL values, so that shouldn’t affect me either. ...but something’s wrong. I do actually need to satisfy #3. And I do need to make sure #7 is being handled properly, because there are some situations (eg, differing SRIDs) where STDistance can return NULL. It says so at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb933808.aspx – “STDistance() always returns null if the spatial reference IDs (SRIDs) of the geography instances do not match.” So if I simply make sure that I’m filtering out the rows that return NULL… …then it’s blindingly fast, I get the right results, and I’ve got the complex-but-brilliant plan that I wanted. It just wasn’t overly intuitive, despite being documented. @rob_farley

  • SQL SERVER – Plan Cache and Data Cache in Memory

    - by pinaldave
    I get following question almost all the time when I go for consultations or training. I often end up providing the scripts to my clients and attendees. Instead of writing new blog post, today in this single blog post, I am going to cover both the script and going to link to original blog posts where I have mentioned about this blog post. • Is there a Generic USB TouchScreen Driver 12.04?

    - by lbjoum
    Is there a Generic USB TouchScreen Driver 12.04? Device 03eb:201c I've been looking for 4 days solid (not very skilled) and can't find a solution. I have a generic tablet: C97- Atom N2600 9.7" 2GB 32GB Bluetooth WiFi WebCam Ext.3G Windows 7 Tablet PC Using 12.04 and cannot find a driver. I installed android and the touchscreen works but still lots of other bugs. Oh well, stuck with Windows 7 and not happy about it. Will keep trying, but too much time wasted already. • SQL SERVER – Import CSV into Database – Transferring File Content into a Database Table using CSVexpress

    - by pinaldave
    One of the most common data integration tasks I run into is a desire to move data from a file into a database table.  Generally the user is familiar with his data, the structure of the file, and the database table, but is unfamiliar with data integration tools and therefore views this task as something that is difficult.  What these users really need is a point and click approach that minimizes the learning curve for the data integration tool.  This is what CSVexpress (www.CSVexpress.com) is all about!  It is based on expressor Studio, a data integration tool I’ve been reviewing over the last several months. With CSVexpress, moving data between data sources can be as simple as providing the database connection details, describing the structure of the incoming and outgoing data and then connecting two pre-programmed operators.   There’s no need to learn the intricacies of the data integration tool or to write code.  Let’s look at an example. Suppose I have a comma separated value data file with data similar to the following, which is a listing of terminated employees that includes their hiring and termination date, department, job description, and final salary. EMP_ID,STRT_DATE,END_DATE,JOB_ID,DEPT_ID,SALARY 102,13-JAN-93,24-JUL-98 17:00,Programmer,60,"$85,000" 101,21-SEP-89,27-OCT-93 17:00,Account Representative,110,"$65,000" 103,28-OCT-93,15-MAR-97 17:00,Account Manager,110,"$75,000" 304,17-FEB-96,19-DEC-99 17:00,Marketing,20,"$45,000" 333,24-MAR-98,31-DEC-99 17:00,Data Entry Clerk,50,"$35,000" 100,17-SEP-87,17-JUN-93 17:00,Administrative Assistant,90,"$40,000" 334,24-MAR-98,31-DEC-98 17:00,Sales Representative,80,"$40,000" 400,01-JAN-99,31-DEC-99 17:00,Sales Manager,80,"$55,000" Notice the concise format used for the date values, the fact that the termination date includes both date and time information, and that the salary is clearly identified as money by the dollar sign and digit grouping.  In moving this data to a database table I want to express the dates using a format that includes the century since it’s obvious that this listing could include employees who left the company in both the 20th and 21st centuries, and I want the salary to be stored as a decimal value without the currency symbol and grouping character.  Most data integration tools would require coding within a transformation operation to effect these changes, but not expressor Studio.  Directives for these modifications are included in the description of the incoming data. Besides starting the expressor Studio tool and opening a project, the first step is to create connection artifacts, which describe to expressor where data is stored.  For this example, two connection artifacts are required: a file connection, which encapsulates the file system location of my file; and a database connection, which encapsulates the database connection information.  With expressor Studio, I use wizards to create these artifacts. First click New Connection > File Connection in the Home tab of expressor Studio’s ribbon bar, which starts the File Connection wizard.  In the first window, I enter the path to the directory that contains the input file.  Note that the file connection artifact only specifies the file system location, not the name of the file. Then I click Next and enter a meaningful name for this connection artifact; clicking Finish closes the wizard and saves the artifact. To create the Database Connection artifact, I must know the location of, or instance name, of the target database and have the credentials of an account with sufficient privileges to write to the target table.  To use expressor Studio’s features to the fullest, this account should also have the authority to create a table. I click the New Connection > Database Connection in the Home tab of expressor Studio’s ribbon bar, which starts the Database Connection wizard.  expressor Studio includes high-performance drivers for many relational database management systems, so I can simply make a selection from the “Supplied database drivers” drop down control.  If my desired RDBMS isn’t listed, I can optionally use an existing ODBC DSN by selecting the “Existing DSN” radio button. In the following window, I enter the connection details.  With Microsoft SQL Server, I may choose to use Windows Authentication rather than rather than account credentials.  After clicking Next, I enter a meaningful name for this connection artifact and clicking Finish closes the wizard and saves the artifact. Now I create a schema artifact, which describes the structure of the file data.  When expressor reads a file, all data fields are typed as strings.  In some use cases this may be exactly what is needed and there is no need to edit the schema artifact.  But in this example, editing the schema artifact will be used to specify how the data should be transformed; that is, reformat the dates to include century designations, change the employee and job ID’s to integers, and convert the salary to a decimal value. Again a wizard is used to create the schema artifact.  I click New Schema > Delimited Schema in the Home tab of expressor Studio’s ribbon bar, which starts the Database Connection wizard.  In the first window, I click Get Data from File, which then displays a listing of the file connections in the project.  When I click on the file connection I previously created, a browse window opens to this file system location; I then select the file and click Open, which imports 10 lines from the file into the wizard. I now view the file’s content and confirm that the appropriate delimiter characters are selected in the “Field Delimiter” and “Record Delimiter” drop down controls; then I click Next. Since the input file includes a header row, I can easily indicate that fields in the file should be identified through the corresponding header value by clicking “Set All Names from Selected Row. “ Alternatively, I could enter a different identifier into the Field Details > Name text box.  I click Next and enter a meaningful name for this schema artifact; clicking Finish closes the wizard and saves the artifact. Now I open the schema artifact in the schema editor.  When I first view the schema’s content, I note that the types of all attributes in the Semantic Type (the right-hand panel) are strings and that the attribute names are the same as the field names in the data file.  To change an attribute’s name and type, I highlight the attribute and click Edit in the Attributes grouping on the Schema > Edit tab of the editor’s ribbon bar.  This opens the Edit Attribute window; I can change the attribute name and select the desired type from the “Data type” drop down control.  In this example, I change the name of each attribute to the name of the corresponding database table column (EmployeeID, StartingDate, TerminationDate, JobDescription, DepartmentID, and FinalSalary).  Then for the EmployeeID and DepartmentID attributes, I select Integer as the data type, for the StartingDate and TerminationDate attributes, I select Datetime as the data type, and for the FinalSalary attribute, I select the Decimal type. But I can do much more in the schema editor.  For the datetime attributes, I can set a constraint that ensures that the data adheres to some predetermined specifications; a starting date must be later than January 1, 1980 (the date on which the company began operations) and a termination date must be earlier than 11:59 PM on December 31, 1999.  I simply select the appropriate constraint and enter the value (1980-01-01 00:00 as the starting date and 1999-12-31 11:59 as the termination date). As a last step in setting up these datetime conversions, I edit the mapping, describing the format of each datetime type in the source file. I highlight the mapping line for the StartingDate attribute and click Edit Mapping in the Mappings grouping on the Schema > Edit tab of the editor’s ribbon bar.  This opens the Edit Mapping window in which I either enter, or select, a format that describes how the datetime values are represented in the file.  Note the use of Y01 as the syntax for the year.  This syntax is the indicator to expressor Studio to derive the century by setting any year later than 01 to the 20th century and any year before 01 to the 21st century.  As each datetime value is read from the file, the year values are transformed into century and year values. For the TerminationDate attribute, my format also indicates that the datetime value includes hours and minutes. And now to the Salary attribute. I open its mapping and in the Edit Mapping window select the Currency tab and the “Use currency” check box.  This indicates that the file data will include the dollar sign (or in Europe the Pound or Euro sign), which should be removed. And on the Grouping tab, I select the “Use grouping” checkbox and enter 3 into the “Group size” text box, a comma into the “Grouping character” text box, and a decimal point into the “Decimal separator” character text box. These entries allow the string to be properly converted into a decimal value. By making these entries into the schema that describes my input file, I’ve specified how I want the data transformed prior to writing to the database table and completely removed the requirement for coding within the data integration application itself. Assembling the data integration application is simple.  Onto the canvas I drag the Read File and Write Table operators, connecting the output of the Read File operator to the input of the Write Table operator. Next, I select the Read File operator and its Properties panel opens on the right-hand side of expressor Studio.  For each property, I can select an appropriate entry from the corresponding drop down control.  Clicking on the button to the right of the “File name” text box opens the file system location specified in the file connection artifact, allowing me to select the appropriate input file.  I indicate also that the first row in the file, the header row, should be skipped, and that any record that fails one of the datetime constraints should be skipped. I then select the Write Table operator and in its Properties panel specify the database connection, normal for the “Mode,” and the “Truncate” and “Create Missing Table” options.  If my target table does not yet exist, expressor will create the table using the information encapsulated in the schema artifact assigned to the operator. The last task needed to complete the application is to create the schema artifact used by the Write Table operator.  This is extremely easy as another wizard is capable of using the schema artifact assigned to the Read Table operator to create a schema artifact for the Write Table operator.  In the Write Table Properties panel, I click the drop down control to the right of the “Schema” property and select “New Table Schema from Upstream Output…” from the drop down menu. The wizard first displays the table description and in its second screen asks me to select the database connection artifact that specifies the RDBMS in which the target table will exist.  The wizard then connects to the RDBMS and retrieves a list of database schemas from which I make a selection.  The fourth screen gives me the opportunity to fine tune the table’s description.  In this example, I set the width of the JobDescription column to a maximum of 40 characters and select money as the type of the LastSalary column.  I also provide the name for the table. This completes development of the application.  The entire application was created through the use of wizards and the required data transformations specified through simple constraints and specifications rather than through coding.  To develop this application, I only needed a basic understanding of expressor Studio, a level of expertise that can be gained by working through a few introductory tutorials.  expressor Studio is as close to a point and click data integration tool as one could want and I urge you to try this product if you have a need to move data between files or from files to database tables. Check out CSVexpress in more detail.  It offers a few basic video tutorials and a preview of expressor Studio 3.5, which will support the reading and writing of data into Salesforce.com. • Building Simple Workflows in Oozie

    - by dan.mcclary
    Introduction More often than not, data doesn't come packaged exactly as we'd like it for analysis. Transformation, match-merge operations, and a host of data munging tasks are usually needed before we can extract insights from our Big Data sources. Few people find data munging exciting, but it has to be done. Once we've suffered that boredom, we should take steps to automate the process. We want codify our work into repeatable units and create workflows which we can leverage over and over again without having to write new code. In this article, we'll look at how to use Oozie to create a workflow for the parallel machine learning task I described on Cloudera's site. Hive Actions: Prepping for Pig In my parallel machine learning article, I use data from the National Climatic Data Center to build weather models on a state-by-state basis. NCDC makes the data freely available as gzipped files of day-over-day observations stretching from the 1930s to today. In reading that post, one might get the impression that the data came in a handy, ready-to-model files with convenient delimiters. The truth of it is that I need to perform some parsing and projection on the dataset before it can be modeled. If I get more observations, I'll want to retrain and test those models, which will require more parsing and projection. This is a good opportunity to start building up a workflow with Oozie. I store the data from the NCDC in HDFS and create an external Hive table partitioned by year. This gives me flexibility of Hive's query language when I want it, but let's me put the dataset in a directory of my choosing in case I want to treat the same data with Pig or MapReduce code. CREATE EXTERNAL TABLE IF NOT EXISTS historic_weather(column 1, column2) PARTITIONED BY (yr string) STORED AS ... LOCATION '/user/oracle/weather/historic'; As new weather data comes in from NCDC, I'll need to add partitions to my table. That's an action I should put in the workflow. Similarly, the weather data requires parsing in order to be useful as a set of columns. Because of their long history, the weather data is broken up into fields of specific byte lengths: x bytes for the station ID, y bytes for the dew point, and so on. The delimiting is consistent from year to year, so writing SerDe or a parser for transformation is simple. Once that's done, I want to select columns on which to train, classify certain features, and place the training data in an HDFS directory for my Pig script to access. ALTER TABLE historic_weather ADD IF NOT EXISTS PARTITION (yr='2010') LOCATION '/user/oracle/weather/historic/yr=2011'; INSERT OVERWRITE DIRECTORY '/user/oracle/weather/cleaned_history' SELECT w.stn, w.wban, w.weather_year, w.weather_month, w.weather_day, w.temp, w.dewp, w.weather FROM ( FROM historic_weather SELECT TRANSFORM(...) USING '/path/to/hive/filters/ncdc_parser.py' as stn, wban, weather_year, weather_month, weather_day, temp, dewp, weather ) w; Since I'm going to prepare training directories with at least the same frequency that I add partitions, I should also add that to my workflow. Oozie is going to invoke these Hive actions using what's somewhat obviously referred to as a Hive action. Hive actions amount to Oozie running a script file containing our query language statements, so we can place them in a file called weather_train.hql. Starting Our Workflow Oozie offers two types of jobs: workflows and coordinator jobs. Workflows are straightforward: they define a set of actions to perform as a sequence or directed acyclic graph. Coordinator jobs can take all the same actions of Workflow jobs, but they can be automatically started either periodically or when new data arrives in a specified location. To keep things simple we'll make a workflow job; coordinator jobs simply require another XML file for scheduling. The bare minimum for workflow XML defines a name, a starting point, and an end point: <workflow-app name="WeatherMan" xmlns="uri:oozie:workflow:0.1"> <start to="ParseNCDCData"/> <end name="end"/> </workflow-app> To this we need to add an action, and within that we'll specify the hive parameters Also, keep in mind that actions require <ok> and <error> tags to direct the next action on success or failure. <action name="ParseNCDCData"> <hive xmlns="uri:oozie:hive-action:0.2"> <job-tracker>localhost:8021</job-tracker> <name-node>localhost:8020</name-node> <configuration> <property> <name>oozie.hive.defaults</name> <value>/user/oracle/weather_ooze/hive-default.xml</value> </property> </configuration> <script>ncdc_parse.hql</script> </hive> <ok to="WeatherMan"/> <error to="end"/> </action> There are a couple of things to note here: I have to give the FQDN (or IP) and port of my JobTracker and NameNode. I have to include a hive-default.xml file. I have to include a script file. The hive-default.xml and script file must be stored in HDFS That last point is particularly important. Oozie doesn't make assumptions about where a given workflow is being run. You might submit workflows against different clusters, or have different hive-defaults.xml on different clusters (e.g. MySQL or Postgres-backed metastores). A quick way to ensure that all the assets end up in the right place in HDFS is just to make a working directory locally, build your workflow.xml in it, and copy the assets you'll need to it as you add actions to workflow.xml. At this point, our local directory should contain: workflow.xml hive-defaults.xml (make sure this file contains your metastore connection data) ncdc_parse.hql Adding Pig to the Ooze Adding our Pig script as an action is slightly simpler from an XML standpoint. All we do is add an action to workflow.xml as follows: <action name="WeatherMan"> <pig> <job-tracker>localhost:8021</job-tracker> <name-node>localhost:8020</name-node> <script>weather_train.pig</script> </pig> <ok to="end"/> <error to="end"/> </action> Once we've done this, we'll copy weather_train.pig to our working directory. However, there's a bit of a "gotcha" here. My pig script registers the Weka Jar and a chunk of jython. If those aren't also in HDFS, our action will fail from the outset -- but where do we put them? The Jython script goes into the working directory at the same level as the pig script, because pig attempts to load Jython files in the directory from which the script executes. However, that's not where our Weka jar goes. While Oozie doesn't assume much, it does make an assumption about the Pig classpath. Anything under working_directory/lib gets automatically added to the Pig classpath and no longer requires a REGISTER statement in the script. Anything that uses a REGISTER statement cannot be in the working_directory/lib directory. Instead, it needs to be in a different HDFS directory and attached to the pig action with an <archive> tag. Yes, that's as confusing as you think it is. You can get the exact rules for adding Jars to the distributed cache from Oozie's Pig Cookbook. Making the Workflow Work We've got a workflow defined and have collected all the components we'll need to run. But we can't run anything yet, because we still have to define some properties about the job and submit it to Oozie. We need to start with the job properties, as this is essentially the "request" we'll submit to the Oozie server. In the same working directory, we'll make a file called job.properties as follows: nameNode=hdfs://localhost:8020 jobTracker=localhost:8021 queueName=default weatherRoot=weather_ooze mapreduce.jobtracker.kerberos.principal=foo dfs.namenode.kerberos.principal=foo oozie.libpath=${nameNode}/user/oozie/share/lib oozie.wf.application.path=${nameNode}/user/${user.name}/${weatherRoot} outputDir=weather-ooze While some of the pieces of the properties file are familiar (e.g., JobTracker address), others take a bit of explaining. The first is weatherRoot: this is essentially an environment variable for the script (as are jobTracker and queueName). We're simply using them to simplify the directives for the Oozie job. The oozie.libpath pieces is extremely important. This is a directory in HDFS which holds Oozie's shared libraries: a collection of Jars necessary for invoking Hive, Pig, and other actions. It's a good idea to make sure this has been installed and copied up to HDFS. The last two lines are straightforward: run the application defined by workflow.xml at the application path listed and write the output to the output directory. We're finally ready to submit our job! After all that work we only need to do a few more things: Validate our workflow.xml Copy our working directory to HDFS Submit our job to the Oozie server Run our workflow Let's do them in order. First validate the workflow: oozie validate workflow.xml Next, copy the working directory up to HDFS: hadoop fs -put working_dir /user/oracle/working_dir Now we submit the job to the Oozie server. We need to ensure that we've got the correct URL for the Oozie server, and we need to specify our job.properties file as an argument. oozie job -oozie http://url.to.oozie.server:port_number/ -config /path/to/working_dir/job.properties -submit We've submitted the job, but we don't see any activity on the JobTracker? All I got was this funny bit of output: 14-20120525161321-oozie-oracle This is because submitting a job to Oozie creates an entry for the job and places it in PREP status. What we got back, in essence, is a ticket for our workflow to ride the Oozie train. We're responsible for redeeming our ticket and running the job. oozie -oozie http://url.to.oozie.server:port_number/ -start 14-20120525161321-oozie-oracle Of course, if we really want to run the job from the outset, we can change the "-submit" argument above to "-run." This will prep and run the workflow immediately. Takeaway So, there you have it: the somewhat laborious process of building an Oozie workflow. It's a bit tedious the first time out, but it does present a pair of real benefits to those of us who spend a great deal of time data munging. First, when new data arrives that requires the same processing, we already have the workflow defined and ready to run. Second, as we build up a set of useful action definitions over time, creating new workflows becomes quicker and quicker.
