I've filed an ITP bug on bugs.debian.org - now how do I get the package into Ubuntu?

I've written a development library that I would like to include in the Ubuntu archives. From what I understand, the best way to do this is to first get the package into Debian and then request a package sync. Here is the ITP bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=691467 Now my question is simply... what do I do now? Looking at this page, I see horrifying things like "419 days in preparation" and "last activity 404 days ago". I get the impression that getting a package into Debian is a slow process. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? I've tried to do as much work as I can to smooth out the process - I've got a branch with Debian packaging (which gets by Lintian without any errors).

Shader effect similar to Metro 2033 gasmask

I was thinking about effects in games the other day and I was reminded of the Gasmask effect from Metro 2033. Once you put the gasmask on it blurred a bit in the corners and could ice up and even get cracked. I assume that something like that is done using a shader. I have been experimenting a bit with game development, so far mostly playing with existing rendering engines and adding physics support etc. I would like to learn more about this sort of effect. Can someone give me a simple example of a shader that would alter the entire scene like this. Or if not a shader then an idea on how it would be done. Thanks. Sharing code in LGPL and proprietary software

Hi I'm working on a piece of software that'll be released as a dll under LGPL. The software interfaces with hardware from a small company that has provided me with the needed libraries and some code to use them correctly (not only headers but its all in a separate file). As far as i know, the same code is used in their proprietary software that they don't intend to open source but they'd be fine releasing the piece of code they've given me. Now here's the question: What license could be used on the code I got from the company? I guess using GPL or LGPL would make them violate GPL when using the same code in their other software. Is MIT a good idea? Is it ok to just include a file with MIT license on it in my otherwise LGPL:ed project? Since I'm not the copyright holder, I'd have to ask the company to apply the license obviously but that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks /Martin

Visual Studio 2012 - Express vs Professional

I'm having trouble finding a feature comparison between Visual Studio 2012 express edition and the professional edition. I'm using the trial Profession version at the moment, but it'll run out soon, so I need to make a decision whether to purchase the full version. Obviously I can just try both initially and see if the express edition is suitable, but the problem is that there are that many features in Visual Studio, there might be a really useful feature that was missing in the standard edition that I didn't even know existed! Or I didn't spot was missing until later down the line. I could really do with a feature comparison list like the one for all non-express editions here. It's a shame that page doesn't include the express edition. (as a side note, there doesn't seem to be a visual-studio-2012 tag, so I had to just use visual-studio. Could someone with enough rep to create tags add a visual-studio-2012 tag?)

Adding UCM as a search source in Windows Explorer

A customer recently pointed out to me that Windows 7 supports federated search within Windows Explorer. This means you can perform searches to external sources such as Google, Flickr, YouTube, etc right from within Explorer. While we do have the Desktop Integration Suite which offers searching within Explorer, I thought it would be interesting to look into this method which would not require any client software to implement. Basically, federated searching hooks up in Windows Explorer through the OpenSearch protocol. A Search Connector Descriptor file is run and it installs the search provider. The file is a .osdx file which is an OpenSearch Description document. It describes the search provider you are hooking up to along with the URL for the query. If those results can come back as an RSS or ATOM feed, then you're all set. So the first step is to install the RSS Feeds component from the UCM Samples page on OTN. If you're on 11g, I've found the RSS Feeds works just fine on that version too. Next, you want to perform a Quick Search with a particular search term and then copy the RSS link address for that search result. Here is what an example URL might looks like: http://server:16200/cs/idcplg?IdcService=GET_SCS_FEED&feedName=search_results&QueryText=%28+%3cqsch%3eoracle%3c%2fqsch %3e+%29&SortField=dInDate&SortOrder=Desc&ResultCount=20&SearchQueryFormat= Universal&SearchProviders=server& Now you want to create a new text file and start out with this information: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><OpenSearchDescription xmlns:ms-ose="http://schemas.microsoft.com/opensearchext/2009/"> <ShortName></ShortName> <Description></Description> <Url type="application/rss+xml" template=""/> <Url type="text/html" template=""/> </OpenSearchDescription> Enter a ShortName and Description. The ShortName will be the value used when displaying the search provider in Explorer. In the template attribute for the first Url element, enter the URL copied previously. You will then need to convert the ampersand symbols to '&' to make them XML compliant. Finally, you'll want to switch out the search term with '{searchTerms}'. For the second Url element, you can do the same thing except you want to copy the UCM search results URL from the page of results. That URL will look something like: http://server:16200/cs/idcplg?IdcService=GET_SEARCH_RESULTS&SortField=dInDate&SortOrder=Desc&ResultCount=20&QueryText=%3Cqsch%3Eoracle%3C%2Fqsch%3E&listTemplateId= &ftx=1&SearchQueryFormat=Universal&TargetedQuickSearchSelection= &MiniSearchText=oracle Again, convert the ampersand symbols and replace the search term with '{searchTerms}'. When complete, save the file with the .osdx extension. Now just click on the search icon and in the upper right search box, enter your term. As you are typing, it begins executing searches and the results will come back in Explorer. Now when you double-click on an item, it will try and download the web viewable for viewing. You also have the ability to save the search, just as you would in UCM. And there is a link to Search On Website which will launch your browser and go directly to the search results page there. And with some tweaks to the RSS component, you can make the results a bit more interesting. It supports the Media RSS standard, so you can pass along the thumbnail of the documents in the results. To enable this, edit the rss_resources.htm file in the RSS Feeds component. How to Change and Manually Start and Stop Automatic Maintenance in Windows 8

Windows 8 has a new feature that allows you to automatically run scheduled daily maintenance on your computer. These maintenance tasks run in the background and include security updating and scanning, Windows software updates, disk defragmentation, system diagnostics, among other tasks. We’ve previously shown you how to automate maintenance in Windows 7, Vista, and XP. Windows 8 maintenance is automatic by default and the performance and energy efficiency has been improved over Windows 7. The program for Windows 8 automatic maintenance is called MSchedExe.exe and it is located in the C:\Windows\System32 directory. We will show you how you can change the automatic maintenance settings in Windows 8 and how you can start and stop the maintenance manually. Screen brightness control not working on Lenovo T530

My brightness control doesn't work with a fresh install of 12.10 (brand new laptop). It is set to the brightest setting when I boot up and when I try to change it, I see the notification bar come up but the brightness doesn't actually change. I've tried all the solutions I could find around the Internet but none of them work. Things I have tried include: Editing /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness In /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-brightness-control.conf: Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1" In /etc/default/grub: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor" There is no xorg.conf file in 12.10 that I have found, so the solutions that suggest editing that file don't do me a whole lot of good. I am currently using the Nouveau driver, but switching to the Nvidia proprietary drivers made no difference. Any other ideas? When is this bug going to be fixed? With all the reports I've come across I would think it would get a lot of attention. Thanks.

Byobu Split Screens attaching to same session

On a brand new install of Precise, after installing byobu, I'm facing the following behaviour: ie. all internal splits on byobu (using Ctrl+F2) will just attach to the same screen session. What I type on the left is reflected on the right. The solutions on this question while on the same problem do not help me out. I've tried the following: byobu-disable both inside and outside the byobu session byobu new-session byobu shell just runs a new simple screen session as far as I can figure it out. This does not include terminal splits, so it does not help me. byobu -S screen-name lets me create two separate byobu sessions, but split screens lead to duplicates in both.

Howto install google-mock on Ubuntu 12.10

I am having hard time trying to install Google C++ Mocking Framework. I have successfully run sudo apt-get install google-mock. Then I tried to compile this sample file #include "gmock/gmock.h" int main(int argc, char** argv) { ::testing::InitGoogleMock(&argc, argv); return RUN_ALL_TESTS(); } with g++ -lgmock main.cpp and these errors have shown main.cpp:(.text+0x1e): undefined reference to `testing::InitGoogleMock(int*, char**)' main.cpp:(.text+0x23): undefined reference to `testing::UnitTest::GetInstance()' main.cpp:(.text+0x2b): undefined reference to `testing::UnitTest::Run()' collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status I guess the linker can not find the library files. Does anybody know how to fix this?

Find the occurrence of word/character in SQL column with wildcard character - PATINDEX

CharIndex and PatIndex both can be used to determine the presence of character or string within sql column data. Both returns the starting position of the first occurrence of the character/word within expression. However, one major difference between CharIndex and PatIndex is that later allows the use of wild card characters while searching for character or word within column data. Also, Patindex is useful for searching within Text datatype. Allowed wild card characters are % and _ . " % " - use it for any number of characters " _ " - use it for a single character. Syntax PATINDEX('%pattern%', string_expression) Note - it's mandatory to include pattern within %% characters. returns starting position of occurrence of pattern, if found. returns 0, if not found returns NULL , if either pattern or string_expression is null. What's the best way of marketing to programmers?

Disclaimer up front - I'm definitely not going to include any links in here - this question isn't part of my marketing! I've had a few projects recently where the end product is something that developers will use. In the past I've been on the receiving end of all sorts of marketing - as a developer I've gotten no end of junk - 1000s of pens, tee-shirts and mouse pads; enough CDs to keep my desk tea-free; some very useful USB keys with some logos I no longer recognise; a small forest's worth of leaflets; a bulging spam folder full of ignored emails, etc... So that's my question - What are good ways to market to developers? And as an aside - are developers the wrong people to target? - since we so often don't have a purchasing budget anyways!

Will JVisualVM degrade application performance?

I have doubts in JVisual VM profiler tool related to performance. I have requirement to implement a JVM Monitoring tool for my enterpise java application. I have gone through some profiling tools in market but all them are having some kind of agent file which we need include in server startup. I have a fear that these client agent will degrade my application performance will more. So I have decided to JVisual VM because this profiler tool comes with JDK itself but before implementing JVisualVM, does anybody faces any issues with JVisualVM profiler tool? As well as, is this safe if I implement in application?
