• Getting COM object to run in Vista

  We expose an interface to our simulation software using a COM/ActiveX object. This worked just fine in XP, but in Vista, we get "Error 429: ActiveX can't create object" when a VB client executes CreateObject(). The COM object has been registered by hand so that the Vista Registry is identical to XP's Registry. I run the VB interface from a DOS window that I started using "Run As Administrator". The client is correctly accessing and reading the Registry as I walk through using the debugger in VB, so it's apparently not a security setting, as near as I can tell. I have also loaded the files into VS2005 (the object was originally created in VS6) and rebuilt them to get a later ATL version, but that hasn't helped - we still get the 429 error. Is this a symptom of UAC problems, or should I be looking for something deeper?

  Hi all! I learn Cocoa Touch several days, and today have stuck while looking for way to implement a custom event. Event that I can see in Connection Inspector for my UIView subclass. What I have: There are a UILabel and MyView:UIView on MainVindow. MyView contains a UISlider. Interfaces for Controller and MyView // Controller.h @interface Controller : NSObject { IBOutlet UILabel *label; IBOutlet MyView *myView; } // I suppose that there should be something like -(IBAction) changeLabelValue for myView event @end // MyView.h @interface MyView : UIView { IBOutlet UISlider *slider; float value; } - (IBAction) changeValue; //for slider "Changed Value" event What I want: Add something in MyView that allows it to rise a event after change value. Can anybody help me? My main area in programming is .NET and I begin think that its terminology is not appropriate for this case. Thanks.

• Mocking a non-settable child property with Rhino Mocks

  I currently have interfaces much like the following: interface IService { void Start(); IHandler ServiceHandler { get; } } interface IHandler { event EventHandler OnMessageReceived; } Using Rhino Mocks, it's easy enough to mock IService, but it doesn't assign any IHandler instance to the ServiceHandler property. Therefore when my method under test adds an event handler to _mockedService.ServiceHandler.OnMessageReceived, I get an 'Object reference not set' error. How can I ensure that ServiceHandler is assigned a value in the mocked IService instance? This is likely Rhino Mocks 101, but I'm just getting up to speed on it...

• Debugging segfault on swig/python/c++

  I am trying to figure out what the best way to debug a segault with swig/python/c++. A core file is being generated. I have a basic MessageFactory(defined in c++ that provides a simple interface to accept a few strings as input and return a string as output). This interface is then specified in a .i file. swig is used to generate Wrapper.cpp as well as a MessageFactory.py from the .i file. This along with supporting files is compiled into a dynamic lib. The point of failure , is when the MessageFactory is instantiated within python code. Any suggestions on how I can go about debugging this? I've tried running the script within pdb, what I know from that is import on the generated MessageFactory.py is whats causing the seg-fault.

• Make errors when compiling HPL-2.1 on MOSIX-clustered Debian server

• Zaypay alternatives for payments using call or sms

  We are currently trying to implement a payment provider in zaypay for paying for services using sms or by calling a number. We already have google checkout and paypal working for regular payments but zaypay is rather inflexible, poorly documented and a pain to setup when you have hundreds of products with varying prices. So my question is, do you know of any other european payment providers that take sms and call payments? As a response to Roberts answer/question Hi Robert, I must say that the Zaypay solution is the best and only I've seen thus far regarding phoned payments. However, since its now 2 months ago I finished the implementation of our custom Zaypay UI I can't remember much of the the details of the problems we were having. I'll try to give a brief of them anyways the best I can. First of all I would like to see a redirection type scenario for payalogues. From what I remember you guys are using the JS framework "Prototype" which doesn't play nice with jQuery which we are using so we weren't able to use the popup-type scenario supported by payalogues. Furthermore when implementing our custom interface I remember a lot of missing translations, like words that were codes instead of a word or a phrase. This meant we ended up writing/translating all the messages we needed ourselves. Also, another point of annoyance was the setup of prices and items. I wish we could just send in the order items/prices as a part of the interface like you can in Google Checkout or PayPal (not that they're flawless either), instead of having to define ALL the items you will ever sell through your admin interface beforehand. As far as I can remember it is virtually impossible to use Zaypay for a multi-item order in its current form. Finally there are, as far as I can tell, some security issues that you have to think about when you implement a custom solution... especially a ajax driven one. As I said in my original post you do mention this in the documentation but I believe the documentation wasn't that comprehensive regarding security issues. Again I wish I could give more details but the code & client is long since gone, so I can't look up the comments I wrote. Sorry! Oh yeah, the general API documentation weren't exactly comprehensive and 100% correct either. Again, I don't want to advice people against using Zaypay, I just want to advice that they should try it out first on a realistic prototype and think about their implementation before releasing to production. Maybe its just me who misunderstood a lot of things but I generally had a difficult time using your framework and I was left with a feeling that the API was very new and not thought through from the beginning.

• Custom Classes Passed from Service to a UI threads via AIDL

  I have a service that regularly queries a web server for new messages. The service stores the new messages in an arrayList. These messages are implemented using a custom class, storing all kinds of metadata (strings and longs). An activity then connects to this service to retrieve those messages and display them to the user. I have an .aidl file that describes the interface that the service exposes. package com.example.package; interface MyInterface { List<Message> getMessages(); } The Message class extends the Parcelable class which should allow for the IPC transfer. The problem is this: Eclipse gives me an error saying that the type of List<Message> is unknown. Any imports are marked as invalid. Ideas? Thanks

  Hi all im building a web user interface. In this interface i use popup divs to capture user input and other tasks. On on of my popups i need to post a form so that i can handle uploaded files. Id like to do this in an iframe so that it dosent effect the main page form. Id like to know if there are any drawbacks to this method and if i should load the iframe into the page at startup or output the iframe via an ajax routine.

• Is there a recommended way to use the Observer pattern in MVP using GWT?

  I am thinking about implementing a user interface according to the MVP pattern using GWT, but have doubts about how to proceed. These are (some of) my goals: - the presenter knows nothing about the UI technology (i.e. uses nothing from com.google.*) - the view knows nothing about the model or the presenter - the model knows nothing of the view or the presenter (...obviously) I would place an interface between the view and the presenter and use the Observer pattern to decouple the two: the view generates events and the presenter gets notified. What confuses me is that java.util.Observer and java.util.Observable are not supported in GWT. This suggests that what I'm doing is not the recommended way to do it, as far as GWT is concerned, which leads me to my questions: what is the recommended way to implement MVP using GWT, specifically with the above goals in mind? How would you do it?

• Building highly scalable web services

  My team and I are in the middle of developing an application which needs to be able to handle pretty heavy traffic. Not facebook level but in the future I would like to be able to scale to that without massive code re-writes. My thought was to modularise out everything into seperate services with their own interfaces. So for example messaging would have a messaging interface that might have send and getMessages() as methods and then the PHP web app would simply query this interface through soap or curl or something like that. The messaging application could then be any kind of application so a Java application or Python or whatever was suitable for that particular functionality with its own seperate database shard. Is this a good approach?

  I'm getting into writing unit testing and have implemented a nice repository pattern/moq to allow me to test my functions without using "real" data. So far so good.. However.. In my repository interface for "Posts" IPostRepository I have a function: Post getPostByID(int id); I want to be able to test this from my Test class but cannot work out how. So far I am using this pattern for my tests: [SetUp] public void Setup() { mock = new Mock<IPostRepository>(); } [Test] public void someTest() { populate(10); //This populates the mock with 10 fake entries //do test here } In my function "someTest" I want to be able to call/test the function GetPostById. I can find the function with mock.object.getpostbyid but the "object" is null. • viewDidLoad never called in Sub-classed UIViewController

  I've run into some trouble with loading a sub-classed UIViewController from a nib. My viewDidLoad function is never called. The super-class has no nib, but the sub-classes each have their own. i.e. @interface SuperClass : UIViewController { } @end @interface SubClass : SuperClass{ } @end @implementation SubClass - (id)initWithNibName:(NSString *)nibNameOrNil bundle:(NSBundle *)nibBundleOrNil { self = [super initWithNibName:nibNameOrNil bundle:nibBundleOrNil]; if (self) { } return self; } - (void)viewDidLoad{ // Never called } The view is loaded from a nib as follows: SubClass *scvc = [[SubClass alloc] initWithNibName:@"SubClass" bundle:nil]; [self.navigationController pushViewController:scvc animated:YES]; [scvc release]; There is a nib file with this name and it has it's file owner's class set properly. viewDidLoad is not called in the child or super. Any ideas?

• Objective-C categories: Can I add a property for a method not in my category?

  I want to use a category to make a method on the original class available as a property as well. Class A: @interface ClassA - (NSString*)foo; @end Class A category @interface ClassA (Properties) - (void)someCategoryMethod; @property (nonatomic, readonly) NSString *foo; @end Now when I do this, it seems to work, but it gives me warnings because I am not synthesizing the property in my category implementation. How do I tell the compiler everything is actually just fine since the original class synthesizes the property for me?

• Suspended Laptop Cannot Wake Up - Ubuntu

  I've got an ASUS G73JH, and whenever I suspend it or hibernate it, it will not wake up. The screen stays backlight but is black. The fan remains running, however the HDD does not, not disk activity is noticeable (audibly (It's not a SSD)). I can't: Awaken it with the keyboard Awaken it with the mouse Soft power-off by pressing the power button Change virtual screens by pressing Ctrl-Alt-# Restart X by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace I have to hold down the power button and shut it down that way, and this seems a little unreasonable. Is there a place I could look for more detail as to what's causing this? Is there a known quick-fix to this issue? Nothing is logged as happening when the system is in "suspend" mode. • When I really need to use [NSThread sleepForTimeInterval:1];

  Hi there, I have a program that needs to use sleep. Like really needs to. In lieu of spending ages explaining why, suffice to say that it needs it. Now I'm told to split off my code into a separate thread if it requires sleep so I don't lose interface responsiveness, so I've started learning how to use NSThread. I've created a brand new program that is conceptual so to solve the issue for this example will help me in my real program. Short story is I have a class, it has instance variables and I need a loop with a sleep to be depended on the value of that instance variable. • Correct way to make datasources/resources a deploy-time setting

  I have a web-app that requires two settings: A JDBC datasource A string token I desperately want to be able to deploy one .war to various different containers (jetty,tomcat,gf3 minimum) and configure these settings at application level within the container. My code does this: InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext(); Context envCtx = (javax.naming.Context) ctx.lookup("java:comp/env"); token = (String)envCtx.lookup("token"); ds = (DataSource)envCtx.lookup("jdbc/datasource") Let's assume I've used the glassfish management interface to create two jdbc resources: jdbc/test-datasource and jdbc/live-datasource which connect to different copies of the same schema, on different servers, different credentials etc. Say I want to deploy this to glassfish with and point it at the test datasource, I might have this in my sun-web.xml: ... <resource-ref> <res-ref-name>jdbc/datasource</res-ref-name> <jndi-name>jdbc/test-datasource</jndi-name> </resource-ref> ... but sun-web.xml goes inside my war, right? surely there must be a way to do this through the management interface Am I even trying to do the right thing? Do other containers make this any easier? I'd be particularly interested in how jetty 7 handles this since I use it for development.   I'm developing a web user interface to enter some information that is not very complex but needs to be loaded in real time. I think that the application could make use of speech recognition to facilitate the task. Te core of the interface is being built with Javascript and jQuery, but can easily include a flash or silverlight component. I believe that´s probably the way to go... I don't need to recognize everything that the user says, but only a few prerecorded commands. Also, I don't want the user to click on a button to specify the begining and the end of the spoken command. It should be detected live. Is there anything that does this? I would be grateful if anyone tells me about a complete solution, free or commercial, as well as any advice on capturing a sound stream from the mic and process it with flash or sliverlight.   I suppose this could go for many OO languages. I'm building my domain objects and am not sure where the best place is for the interfaces & abstract classes. If I have a pets package with various implementations of the APet abstract class: should it live side-by-side with them or in the parent package? How about interfaces? It seems like they almost have to live above the implementations in the parent package, since there could potentially be other subpackages which implement it, while there seems to be a stronger correlation between one abstract class and a subpackage. e.g. com.foo com.foo.IConsumer (interface) com.foo.APet (abstract) com.foo.pets.Dog extends APet implements IConsumer OR com.foo com.foo.IConsumer (interface) com.foo.pets.APet (abstract) com.foo.pets.Dog extends APet implements IConsumer or something else?

• What is the best way to interoperably serialize a message?

  I'm considering message serialization support for spring-integration. This would be useful for various wire level transports to implement guaranteed delivery, but also to allow interoperability with other messaging systems (e.g. through AMQP). The fundamental problem that arises is that a message containing Java object in it's payload and headers should be converted to a byte[] and/or written to a stream. Java's own serialization is clearly not going to cut it because that is not interoperable. My preference would be to create an interface that allows the user to implement the needed logic for all Objects that take part in serialization. Is this a sensible idea and what would the interface look like? Is there a standard interoperable way to serialize Objects that would make sense in this context?

  I've been working through the exercises in a book recommended here on stackoverflow, however I've run into a problem and after three days of banging my head on the wall, I think I need some help. I'm working through the "Speakline" exercise where we add a TableView to the interface and the table will display the "voices" that you can choose for the text to speech aspect of the program. I am having two problems that I can't seem to get to the bottom of: I get the following error: * Illegal NSTableView data source (). Must implement numberOfRowsInTableView: and tableView:objectValueForTableColumn:row: The tableView that is supposed to display the voices comes up blank I have a feeling that both of these problems are related.
