• Input Signal Out of Range 1920x1080

  I've recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. Now, every time I boot and when I shut down, my monitor goes blank and says "Input Signal Out of Range - Change Setting to 1920x1080 60Hz." Once the computer gets to the login screen, it's okay again. This problem also happens when I try to open any 3d app. My graphics card is NVIDIA GEforce 6150 SE. I tried updating the drivers, but it broke everything and I had to reinstall Ubuntu. Any help?

• Hostapd to connect laptop to Android

  i am trying to set up my laptop as an access point for my Android to use WiFi, so i knew that ubuntu sets the network as Ad-Hoc which is not discoverable by android, So i tried the method explained here -which i found on many other websites- but when i run hostapd.conf this error appears : nl80211: Failed to set interface wlan0 into AP mode nl80211 driver initialization failed. • Setting coding priorities

  Hi, In the dev shops I've worked in, nobody has ever mentioned "coding priorities". I read this in a book or site somewhere, and sets the expectation of what priority should be first in the code. In places where this is not specified, what should the first priority be? It may sound simple to say "do what the business need requires", but that could be at the expense of performance/maintainability. Many people say maintainability first, regardless, some say fulfill the need regardless. I am a young developer, so I am probably missing the point somewhere. Of course, programming is engineering and tough because you can never have the perfect solution. Thanks

• Setting up ubuntu as a wireless accesspoint

  I have an android phone which doesn't connect to ad-hoc networks. I use ad-hoc network to share internet among my pcs. I want to setup my ubuntu laptop as a wireless access point. But I don't want my ubuntu laptop to be a router as described here as I'll be using suid3 as a http proxy. It should be just a wireless accesspoint which broadcasts it's SSID like a home wireless router. The ubuntu laptop has athros wireless card which requires athk9 driver.

• System network service uncompatable after harddrive change and format

  After changing out the hard drive in my dell optiplex 750, and reinstalling ubuntu, my computer tells me the system network services are not compatable. Because my cd drive does not work, I installed this by placing the hard drive in another computer an dusign the mini.iso to install it. I need networking capabilities becuase I want to use this computer as a web server. The on-board ethernet card is a intel 82566 something. If you need more information, and can tell me how to get it, just ask. Please help.

• Force full-screen game to one monitor?

  I have two monitors, one 1920x1200 and the other 1920x1080, and in 10.10 they were "separate". As in when I opened the display preferences they were shown as separate screens. Since installing (from scratch) 11.04 I instead have one giant 3840x1200 screen spread over the two monitors. Not a problem per se, except when I want to play full-screen games! When playing games I want them to be on the primary (1920x1200) monitor, but since the game only detects one screen I cant do that, even if I lower the resolution in-game. I have a nVidia GTS 250 card, using nvidia-current driver (version 270.41.06), even though "Additional Drivers" reports the driver is "activated but not currently in use". Is there a way to force the game to use only one of the monitors? Or make the game detect both monitors?

• Ubuntu 12.04 resolution issue ATI radeon x1600

  I have a brand new Ubuntu 12.04 installation, but my resolution is set to 800*600 4:3 and my resolution using windows xp is 1440*900 but that option is unavailable for me. When I search for restricted drivers, there are none. So I searched the ati website and downloaded a .run file of about 80 mb. but that gave me an error when I tried to open it. I downloaded some fglrx thing from the repositories and now there are some widescreen options available but still no 1440*900 there is some ATI controlpanel installed, but when I try to open it, it fails telling me that there is now suitable driver. ps. my video card is a 512MB ATI Radeon Sapphire X1600 AGP

• What are good JS libraries for game dev?

  If I decide to write a simple game both text and graphical (2d) what libraries would I use? (Assume we are using a HTML5 compatible browser) The main things I can think of Rendering text on screen Animating sprites (using images/css) Input (capturing the arrow keys and getting relative mouse positions) Perhaps some preloading resource or dynamically loading resources and choosing order Sound (but I am unsure how important this will be to me at first). Perhaps with mixing and chaining sounds or looping forever until stop. Networking (low priority) to connect a user to another or to continuously GET data without multiple request (I know this exist but I don't know how easy it is to setup or use. But this isn't important to me. Its for the question).

  On a site that I'm working on, I'm trying to find ways of enforcing a one-person, one-account rule. In general, we'd like to do this by providing options to authenticate users with third-party services that provide this assurance. For example, it's possible to authenticate with Facebook and check whether the user is considered "verified" by Facebook (which means they must have provided either a phone number or credit card). This is roughly the level of identity verification we require--we're not doing banking or anything like that. But we want to give the user options. My question is, who else, besides Facebook, provides this? (uncertain of the proper SE forum, please comment if there's a better SE site to ask this)

• Game has noticeable frame drops but when through a profiler it always runs smooth

  I'm trying to optimize my PC game but I can find the bottleneck since every time I run it through a profiler (gDEBugger) it runs smooths. When running outside gDEBugger I get these annoying hiccups. It's not just the graphics, the sound also gets choppy. The drops are inconsistent across runs, i.e, sometimes I run the same scenario and get no drops at all, sometimes I get a few drops, and others the game is consistently slow. The only constant is: when running through gDEBugger I ALWAYS get a smooth run. I'm suspecting something outside my game is interfering and causing these drops, but what in the hell does gDEBugger do that nullifies these drops? A higher process priority? Any ideas?   I'm development a network card game, and for now i've two players connected but there is a problem with one of them, this one can't do anything on the game. Looks that screen was blocked. I'm think that is because a code i used before. That code is: if (InvokeRequired) { this.Invoke(new MethodInvoker(delegate { ... })); return; } The code above is surrounding code to changing Button values, make connection with server and create game window. Without this code a warning is shown. InvalidOperationException was unhandled Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'startGameButton' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.

• Developing a DVR software using a hardware KIT

  I'm currently thinking about a project for my masters degree graduation. I start researching for options to make my own video streaming software based on a premade hardware kit having not much knowledge about what I'll exactly need that will match my needs. My search led me to the DVR (Digital Video Recorder) cards which seems to be the closest to what I need, but still I can't find out a few basic things so I decide to ask for them here. Currently I haven't find a lot of manufacturers that offers such kits so where I can look and have some options to choose from? There are a lot of DVR products on the market but they already have a software written for them and even if I buy one they just don't give any documentation or sdk's so buying such is not an option I need a DVR card made exactly for software programers and not end users. Are there a preferred manufacturers that provide such kind of devices with good and developer-friendly documentation? Also - I prefer to do all this with Java, is this an option (I think I will make it with .NET too but really prefer Java as a language of choice)

• Wifi won't work without ethernet (Ubuntu 12.04)

  I have a strange problem. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Studio 1558 laptop. I'm usually unable to access Wifi (I have a BCM43224 wireless card with the STA proprietary driver installed.) So I have to unplug the ethernet cable from my Wifi router and stick it into my laptop's ethernet port to access the Internet. But when I stick the cable back into the Wifi router and try connecting to Wifi, Wifi inexplicably starts working. How can I get Wifi to work all the time without having to 'jumpstart' it with an ethernet connection?

• No internet access since 12.04

  I have updated yesterday to Ubuntu 12.04 but can not access the Internet. It is an old PC without wireless. But the older Ubuntu I had installed up until now (11.??) worked perfectly. I'm not that familiar with Ubuntu, and I have been trying Google for some time know, but I cannot find the answer. • Dual monitor, with a low resolution projector

  I need to show a presentaion to a conference tomorrow. Today I tryed my Ubuntu 10.04 with the projector. My notebook has a resolution of 1440x960, the projector seems to have a really lower resolution. However, thanks to nvidia-settings I configured my video card (a nvidia 9800), it works with other display, but not with the projector. I found the projector, configured as Twin-view, resolution Auto and pressed on Apply, then "Save to x Configuration". On projector is visualized just a quarter of my notebook display. I tryed also to reduce my resolution and to change the resolution of projector, but I obtained no better results. How can I Solve it? On windows all goes well, but I need Ubuntu for personal reasons.   Is there a service or site out there that will store cardholder data for me? I don't need any kind of transaction processing or recurring billing... I just need somewhere that I can store data on until someone in my company is able to look at it. The specific need is allowing customers to input data that will be used for credit checks. Name, Address, Credit Card(s), and the such. Google Checkout, PayPal, NetSuite, and Authorize.net seem to be what everyone suggests to me, but they don't offer what I need -- they're just payment gateways.

• Is type safety worth the trade-offs?

  I began coding in in Python primarily where there is no type safety, then moved to C# and Java where there is. I found that I could work a bit more quickly and with less headaches in Python, but then again, my C# and Java apps are at much higher level of complexity so I have never given Python a true stress test I suppose. The Java and C# camps make it sound like without the type safety in place, most people would be running into all sorts of horrible bugs left an right and it would be more trouble than its worth. This is not a language comparison, so please do not address issues like compiled vs interpreted. Is type safety worth the hit to speed of development and flexibilty? WHY? to the people who wanted an example of the opinion that dynamic typing is faster: "Use a dynamically typed language during development. • How do I get my Broadcom BCM4313 working correctly?

  I've installed ubuntu on a Asus 1015 netbook. Everything worked out of the box except for the Wireless adapter, which i had to install with the Additional Drivers application. It apparently installed fine and connects to our wireless network, but it only works at a "funny" speed range that goes from 367Bytes to a peak of 3Kb in its best moments. I know for sure the problem is neither the network nor the hardware. Network speeds are normal under windows on this laptop and in other computers with ubuntu aswell. lspci says the card is a BCM4313 model, but the Addittional Drivers Manager says these packecege contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driverfor use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4321-, and BCM4322 based hardware seems like it installed the wrong driver... Is there anything I can do? I'm not concerned about compiling the driver or stuff like that, but I'm not sure on where to start... any help or guidance will be very, very appreciated.
