Is it wise to ask about design decisions made on a product during an interview?

I've been thinking about interview questions lately and I've been reflecting on bad interview experiences I've had in the past. One of particular note is where I had asked the interviewer why the team chose to use Spring over EJB3 in their product. The interviewer pretty much tore my face off, yelling "Because Spring is not the be all and end all of Java software development, do you want this job or not?". In response to this, I told him that this probably wasn't the job for me and I walked out the interview. He told me at the start of the interview that they had high stuff turnover, the product had gone from Modula 3 to Perl to Java then after asking him a technical question, he went in flames. It seemed obvious to me that he was toxic to the company with that kind of attitude. Question: Is it a good idea to probe on architectural choices taken in an interview? If not, why? From my own point of view, an interview is a two-way process. If the interviewers are testing me on my technical skills, I've got every right to ask them the same questions to 1) Figure out what their mindset and attitudes towards developing software solutions are and 2) To figure out if there are in line with how I would approach problems of that kind. It's very possible that the interviewer who got angry was a bad interviewer and forgot that an interview is a two-way process. If I was asked this, I would have simply said something along the lines of wanting to leverage the container more, but I certainly wouldn't have tried to put him in a state of meek capitulation. The interviewer in question was the lead developer in the team.

ICMP Data Field Modified - What does it Mean?

Normal ICMP Data fields are composed of a pretty standard 32 byte string of alphabet characters. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwabcdefghi I have captured a series of ICMP echo requests using WireShark with a modified Data field and I have no idea what it means. Need help configurating my Tomcat server without any WAR files

I just reinstalled my entire server, and now I can't seem to get my JSP-based website to work on Tomcat anymore. I use the same server.xml file, which worked perfectly before the reinstallation, but no longer. Why do I see router and not my real IIS?

I am trying to access IIS through web but unable to do so. Basically I have a router (which functions as router and modem) that is given by ISP and I have another router connected to the router given by ISP. My ISP's router can be visited through 192.168.0.1 and the router that I connected to ISP's router can be visited through 192.168.1.1 Please see my ISP's router: As you can see I have DMZ enabled for my router of 192.168.1.1 Now please see my router of 192.168.1.1: As you can see I added a virtual server for port 80 where 192.168.1.125 is my private IP. I rebooted both of my modems an tried to visit my IP from: http://www.whatsmyip.org/ and after doing so, when I type my live IP I still see my router of 192.168.0.1 instead of my IIS. What am I missing? Note: I have disabled Firewall on both of the routers. Any help would be appreciated.

Trying to understand why VLANs need to be created on intermediate switches

I'm currently studying for the Cisco switching exam and having trouble understanding exactly how 802.1q tagging works. Given three daisy chained switches (A,B, and C) with trunk ports between them and VLAN 101 defined on both end switches (A and C), I'm not sure why the VLAN also needs to be defined on the middle one (B)? Note that I am not disputing that it does need to be configured, I'm just trying to understand why exactly. As I understand it, traffic from VLAN 101 on switch A will be tagged as it goes through the trunk to switch B. According to the documentation I have read, trunks will pass all VLANs by default, and the .1q tag is only removed when the frame leaves through an access port on the relevant VLAN. From this I would expect switch B to simply forward the tagged frame unchanged through the trunk to switch C. Can anyone shed some light on how switch B processes this frame and why it does not get forwarded through the other trunk ?

Is a cluster the most cost effective redundancy method for windows server 2003?

We had a server with bad ram which caused a long outage while they figured it out and our client facing apps had to go down for a while. We are coming up with a solution for instant fail-over but are not sure what the most cost effective method would be. Is a windows server cluster the best method for this? Also note we are using Parallels Virtuozzo if that makes any difference here. We found Parallels has a documented method for setting this up but it said it required a Domain Controller as well as a Fiber connection to shared storage, is all that really needed? Thanks.

Ss 6:00PM 0:00.52 /sbin/launchd snies 1638 0.0 0.0 2435468 1064 s001 S 8:13AM 0:00.03 -bash Is this normal behaviour? And if so why? Please note that the user is not an Administrator account and is not able to sudo.

I have a dedicated windows 2008 server and with Allocated monthly traffic: 1500GB, the hosting company sent me "Please take note that the allocated traffic included with your Budget (calculated by GB of traffic) has been exceeded. You will be billed for the exceeding traffic at the end of the month according to the per GB exceeding traffic fee specified on your contract." I checked my Google analytics account and didn't find any big different for the websites traffic this month than previous months. I just want to understand what may cause this sudden increase in traffic this month? may be ftp access? remoting to webserver too much time? or what may cause this? Also, is there any tool in the server to know where the traffic went?

.htaccess redirect for www in parent folder and children react

We were having a problem with the Norton seal not showing up on our affiliate marketing landing pages (landers). Turns out, the Norton seal was super picky about the "www." prefix. I had folder paths like /lp/cmpx where x was a number 1-100 and indicated advertising campaign number. So, to remedy this, I stuck this in my .htaccess file right after the RewriteEngine On line: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/lp/cmp1/$1 [R=302,QSA,NC,L] Trouble is, I had to do that under every campaign folder, changing cmp1 to whatever the folder name was. Therefore, my question is... Is there a way I can do this with an .htaccess file under the parent folder (/lp in this case) and it will work for each of the children? EDIT: Note that I stuck an .htaccess file in /lp just now to test: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/lp/$1 [R=302,QSA,NC,L] This yielded no effect to the /lp/cmpx folders underneath, to my dismay.

An SQLite/STDIN Conundrum, Specific to AIX

Hi there! I'm been playing around with SQlite at work, specifically with trying to get the sqlite3 command line tool to accept stdin instead of a file. Sounds easy enough, on linux you can execute a command like: echo 'test' | sqlite3 test.db '.import /dev/stdin test' unfortunately - our machines at work run AIX (5 & 6) and as far as I can tell, there is no equivalent to the virtual file /dev/stdin. I managed to hack together an equivalent command that works on AIX using a temporary file. echo 'test' | cat - > /tmp/blah ; sqlite3 test.db '.import /dev/stdin test' ; rm /tmp/blah Now, does it need to use STDIN? isn't this temporary file thing enough? Probably, but I was hoping someone with better unix-fu had a more elegant solution. note: the data I would like to import is only provided via STDOUT, so that's what the echo 'test' command is all about

First i added google + link in certain web pages and in my google profile i added those pages which had google + anchor link with rel=author tag. I am having trouble installing this program. I do not know how to locate the browser plugins directory, or change the directory in the terminal. Installation instructions Installing using the plugin tar.gz: Unpack the plugin tar.gz and copy the files to the appropriate location. Save the plugin tar.gz locally and note the location the file was saved to. Launch terminal and change directories to the location the file was saved to. Unpack the tar.gz file. Once unpacked you will see the following: + libflashplayer.so + /usr Identify the location of the browser plugins directory, based on your Linux distribution and Firefox version Copy libflashplayer.so to the appropriate browser plugins directory. At the prompt type: cp libflashlayer.so <BrowserPluginsLocation> Copy the Flash Player Local Settings configurations files to the /usr directory. Is there a way to browse a media server (MediaTomb) with a media player (VLC)?

I currently have an EEE PC set up with LinuxMint as my media server using MediaTomb. I use VLC as my media player on another Windows computer to watch videos off the media server. It works fine, but the current process is: Open up browser and navigate to folder Find the file I want to play and copy URL Paste URL into VLC and watch. This is fine for me on the PC, but it is a little troublesome for my parents to grasp (or for me to use on the phone). Ideally I'd like to: Open up VLC Browse to the file (using VLC) Click/select to play If there is any solution which is similar to this, please let me know. I'm willing to change the software on both server and client to accommodate (although it somewhat depends on which formats are supported on the server) Side note: I've tried searching online for this but I find a lot of jargon such as "media server/centre", media streaming, DLNA, UPNP and feel that some people are either using them interchangeably or incorrectly.

Ubuntu not installed-Please Remove installation media and close tray and press enter

I have downloaded Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS 32 bit, burned it on DVD and tried to install it on my PC. My PC is running in Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit mounted on the C: drive. Now I want install Ubuntu along with my Windows 7. When I boot Ubuntu through the CD, It boots and the Ubuntu install windows opens It offers "Try Ubuntu" and "Install Ubuntu". I choose "Install Ubuntu" Then I go on to install Ubuntu with Windows(First Option)-install It shows some blank screen with some lines, and says "Please Remove installation media and close tray and press enter" Then the PC restarts and runs Windows 7 same as before normally. But Ubuntu is not installed. How to solve this problem and install Ubuntu on my PC properly? Note: I am an Android Developer. So I need to install Ubuntu for my Android Development purpose.

Overview The Workflow Analyzer is a standalone, easy to run tool created to read, validate and troubleshoot Workflow components configuration as well as runtime. It identifies areas where potential problems may arise and based on set of best practices suggests the Workflow System Administrator what to do when such potential problems are found. This tool represents a proactive way to verify Workflow configuration and runtime data to prevent issues ahead of time before they may become of more considerable impact on a production environment. Installation Since it is standalone there are no pre-requisites and runs on Oracle E-Business applications from 11.5.10 onwards. It is installed in the back-end server and can be run directly from SQL*Plus. How to increase virtual hard drive space

I have a Microsoft Virutal PC hard drive (.vhd format) that's maxed out it's 16 gig hard drive space. What would be the best way to increase this diskspace? Booting into the machine (windows xp professional) and using the disk management snap in, I can see that the virtual drive has approximately 40 more unused gigs of space. Trying to use diskpart, I find out that Windows XP can't extend the boot partition. So I'm at an empass, any suggestions on how to increase the partion or to increase the actual virtual hard drive would be great. Note: The virtual hard drive is running on Windows 7 using XP mode.

controlling an object through another object ?

Today I've seen the following pattern: you have an object A and an object B. Object B accepts a pointer to A at its constructor. Once B is created, there's a method B.doCalc() that performs a calculation (internally using A's information). The result is obtained with method B.getResult(). In order to perform another calculation, A is modified, and B.doCalc() is called again. What is your opinion on this choice ? I would have designed it differently, but I want to hear your voice. Edit : note that my main objection is to modify A to have a different result from B, without touching B. Although similar, I think that just this discipline expresses a much better feeling of what's going on. Instead of a = new A a.whatever = 5 b = new B(a) b.doCalc() res = b.getResult() a.whatever = 6 b.doCalc() res = b.getResult() You get the a pointer object from b itself. a = new A a.whatever = 5 b = new B(a) b.doCalc() res = b.getResult() a = b.getAPointer() a.whatever = 6 b.doCalc() res = b.getResult() because it makes more explicit the fact that a is taken from b and then modified. I still don't like it, though...
