• What is the best / latest software to convert DVD recorder disc to YouTube?

  I recorded some Wii gameplay to a DVD-R using a DVD recorder, and tried using Handbrake to convert it to YouTube compatible format. Basically, it needs resizing to 16:9, and selecting 00:03 to 3:10 of the chapter (out of the 7 minutes). It seems Handbrake can't do it for 480p... and if using AutoGK and then VirtualDub to resize and do video time selection, it feels so old school (autogk not updated since 2005)... Windows Movie Maker seems like 15fps video quality... Is there a way to do it nicely? Details if using Handbrake: I can't find a way to convert a DVD recorded video which is 720 x 480 (Wii Gameplay in 16 : 9 ratio) into 852 x 480... It seems that the only possible resize is to shrink but not to expand? It is fine to make it 720 x 406... except YouTube won't be able to show it as 480p... If it can be made 852 x 480, then YouTube can at least show it as 480p (besides 360p and 240p)... is there any way to do it? thanks.

  I have a networked drive (Iomega Media Drive). To be safe in case the drives crashes, I've decided to buy an additional networked drive (WD MyBook World). Now, how do I backup one onto the other continuously? The WD drive came with a backup software (trial version, they didn't say that when i bought it), however it doesn't allow me to select a networked drive, only local drives.   I am searching for a way to type a keyword in the start menu Search programs and files field and that it will return the application that match the keyword. An example will better explain this: Suppose that I want to start the powershell. Currently what I can type in the search field is power and the first item that appear is the 64bits powershell shortcut. Now suppose that I'd like ps to return powershell as the first item of the search list. Currently, typing ps return all files with the .ps extension, alongs with a control panel options about recording steps but not the powershell executable itself. How can I do that?

• Is there any way to customize the Windows 7 taskbar auto-hide behavior? Delay activation? Timer?

  I'm becoming increasingly frustrated with the way Windows 7 handles showing a hidden taskbar. It's incredibly over-eager to pop out and obscure what I'm really trying to interact with, requiring me to move the mouse away, wait for it to auto-hide again, then resume what I was doing but more deliberately. After closely examining the behavior, it appears that a hidden taskbar "peeks out" from the edge by 2 or 3 pixels, and slowly moving your mouse into this area activates it; you don't even need to touch the edge of the screen. I would love it if there was a way to customize or change this behavior. Ideally, the taskbar would only pop out if you are actively "pushing" the edge of the screen it is hidden on. So activation only occurs once you've reached the screens edge and continue to move the mouse past a customizable threshold. Alternatively, a simple activation delay would suffice as well. So only if the mouse remains in that 2-3 pixel area (a.k.a. on the taskbar) for greater than a customizable amount of time does it pop out again. This would only be a fraction of a second. Often times the cursor simply "careens" off the edge of the screen while trying to focus on something nearby. Anyway, if there are any registry settings or utilities that can achieve either of these effects, that would be great! Thanks for your help.

The first time this happened, Linux's Magic SysRq worked and did a soft reboot, and after that everything was fine till it went to sleep again. It wakes up and gives me this. Here are the laptop stats: Toshiba Satellite L455D-S5976 AMD Sempron SI-42 Processor 2GB DDR2 RAM HD TruBrite Display ATI Radeon Graphics (integrated) Running Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit I'm not sure about the hard drive, but its a 250GB drive with one NTFS partition, two Hidden NTFS, one Linux Swap, and one Ext4. Can someone tell me whats wrong with my laptop? NOTE: This only happens when I close the screen. My computer doesn't go to sleep with the screen open.

  I installed the Driver v3.04A from Epson's Web site -- epson12180.exe that is supposedly for Windows 7. Now, the scanner works by itself, i.e. if I hit the scan button I get a dialog menu and can scan with one of the options there but not with Adobe Acrobat. What I need is to have it working from Adobe Acrobat when I go File - Create PDF - From Scanner - Custom Scan... The current state is that I see Scanner: "Please select a device" and no other available devices. I remember I used to see at least 2 other like "WIA Epson Perfection" and smth like "Epson Perfection". "WIA Epson Perfection" is the option that I am hoping to see to move on. • Different routing rules for a particular user using firewall mark and ip rule

  Running Ubuntu 12.10 on amd64. I'm trying to set up different routing rules for a particular user. I understand that the right way to do this is to create a firewall rule that marks the packets for that user, and add a routing rule for that mark. Just to get testing going, I've added a rule that discards all packets as unreachable: # ip rule 0: from all lookup local 32765: from all fwmark 0x1 unreachable 32766: from all lookup main 32767: from all lookup default With this rule in place and all firewall chains in all tables empty and policy ACCEPT, I can still ping remote hosts just fine as any user.   On one of my old computers I am having the problem of upgrading to windows 8.1 because my computer does not support PAE, NX, and SSE2. How was I able to install windows 8 in the first place? I heard the original requirements for windows 8.0 were PAE, NX, and SSE2. Anyone know a bypass for this on a machine already running windows 8? IMO 8.1 should have been released in the form of a service pack not an entirely new windows.

• Connecting desktop computer to the internet through laptop wifi

  Due to some home network complications I have had to move my router to a seperate part of the house, therefore the wired network I had set up can no longer work. Before I find the time to go out and buy a Wifi adapter for my desktop PC, I have a laptop that uses a built in Wifi card to connect to my router and this can connect to the internet, and I was wondering if I could somehow access the internet on my desktop PC via my laptop. I'm hoping for a not-so-complex solution as this will only be set up for a few days, but it is quite vital that my desktop computer gets internet access. Does anyone have experience in this sort of thing and can help me out? Thanks.

• OCZ Vertex 3 SSD boot failure

  Ok, so I just purchased and received a 120GB OCZ Vertex 3. I had Windows 7 on an .ISO file on my computer. I formatted a USB stick and configured it to be read as a CD so that I could install windows onto my SSD from it. I started my comp, had the boot priority set to my USB, starting installing windows 7 to my SSD. And out of no where (I wasn't watching) my computer restarted and it brought me back to the beginning of the Windows 7 set-up. So I turned my computer off and booted it up from the SSD to see if it had installed onto the SSD. The first 2 attempts I had a disk boot failure. So I plugged my hard drive back in, started my computer, turned it off, plugged the SSD back in (literally) and it booted up fine/ Finalized windows got internet set up, and Windows had updates that required a restart. So I restarted and had another disk boot failure. Now I have a disk boot failure every time I try to start my computer up through my SSD. Extra Info: My SSD has never been able to be detected in my BIOS unless my Hard Drive was unplugged (eve then my BIOS didn't always detect it). MY SSD wasn't detected in my BIOS the first and only time it successfully booted up. My SSD literally boots up successfully randomly (only once unfortunately) and is detected in my BIOS randomly. I've tried switching cords etc and nothing has worked. I just want to get this damn thing running so I can see whats its like. I finally found a way to get the OS on this sucker and now it won't even boot up. Any help appreciated

  I have a few folders in my Windows folder (I'm running Windows 7) like this: C:\Windows\1C4551A64743409391E41477CD655043.TMP\WiseCustomCalla.dll All they contain is WiseCustomCalla.dll. I've read that it is part of McAfee antivirus or whatever. The problem is: I have never ever installed any antivirus software on my machine. What is this file and what is it doing on my machine? I am also using Steam and PunkBuster if that helps.

• Restore monitor detection to one only or restore start menu to bottom [Windows 7]

  I have a co-worker that is no longer able to see his start menu. He used to have it pinned to the left edge of his screen. I tried to troubleshoot it a bit and discovered if we do Windows + R then "cmd" [enter] the command prompt opens (but we don't see the start menu or run box), meaning the start menu is somewhere, just off screen. Restarting doesn't help. Is there some way to force Windows to think it only has a single monitor? It seems to "think" it has two but there's only one and we can get the Start menu back. Or, is there a way to restore the start menu to the bottom? Additional info We are able to right-click the desktop for display settings, etc. We can also get into Windows Explorer (via Ctrl + E) so if we need any of that to restore settings we can do it.

• GeForce 9600GT support for dual monitor setup

  I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT (point of view, link) on an Asus M2V-MX motherboard. The card has one DVI, HDMI and S-Video output. The graphics card does not seem to support dual monitors: the driver control panel for the graphics card does not detect a second monitor that is attached via S-Video (which leads me to believe that it doesn't support dual monitors with DVI and the other connections). Would it be possible to use a VGA/DVI splitter to attach two monitors to the single DVI output on the graphics card? Would this allow for a dual monitor setup, or only mirroring? How do I know if the graphic card supports this? With this particular motherboard, would it be possible to use the onboard video for another monitor?

Periodically change of operating system (Windows or Linux). my question is which is better, copy each folder (project) directly to my external disk or create a repository (git - bare init) for each project I need or should do?

• Making always-on-top windows follow the same MRU order as other windows

  Note: I'm using Windows 7 with the classical alt-tab style, ie the registry key AltTabSettings set to 1. I want to use MRU (most recently used) ordering of windows in the alt-tab list. However, because the windows are ordered in the Z order of the windows rather than actual MRU, this sometimes gives a different order after switching from an always-on-top application. Example: I have applications A, B and C open. A is set to always-on-top while the others aren't. A is focused. I now press alt-tab and application B is focused. I now press alt-tab but instead of application A receiving focus, application C does. Since A has a higher Z order, it's now left of application B, despite being the most recently used, and application C is placed right of B and is the one first getting focus by the cursor. To switch to application A, I need to press shift+alt-tab or cycle through all the other open windows. This is annoying when flicking focus back and forth between an always-on-top application and one that isn't always-on-top. Is there a way to make the alt-tab ordering strictly MRU?

  Is anyone aware of a way to access the data in zlib database files for Palm? The file extension is .pdb, but that extension covers a whole range of formats, so a generic 'pdb viewer' won't necessarily be able to handle this. I'd like to be able to open pdb zlib database files. I'd be grateful for any access method: an app for Windows or Debian, or a library for Python or PHP that makes it possible to access the data in these files. If no such tool exists, does anyone know how to use zlib to decompress the data from such a Palm pdb database?

• Stream internal sound from mac to pc?

  I'm using a headphone connected to a PC, however, I also use a mac. I want to make it so that the internal sound, coming from the mac will also be heard over at the pc. So I want to convert the headphone to a somewhat central sound output where I hear both pc and mac's internal sounds. That includes error alerts, mp3s played on iTunes, etc. Is there an app that will let me do this? Just to clarify, the PC is running Windows XP.

• Finding out if a FLAC or WAVPACK audio file is NOT originally encoded from a lossy source

  Is there a way of checking that the so-called FLAC or WAVPACK audio file was originally encoded from a lossless source (WAV, CDA, APE, etc.) instead of a lossy source (MP3, AAC, ATRAC, etc.)? Say I have a lossy MP3 audio file (5.17Mb, 87% compressed from its original, source unknown). I then encode it to another lossless format, say FLAC or WAVPACK. The size increases (23.14Mb, 39% compressed from its original, source MP3)! ID tags, etc, remain the same and there's no way of checking the integrity of its origin. How do I go about doing that?

• I don't understand how GDM is starting...

  I'm on Karmic. I had no keyboard, so I enabled autologin and some other stuff over ssh to get x2x going. Now I can't find what I did. I'm trying to just start X and XBMC now. I don't need gnome. I disabled gdm: sudo update-rc.d -f gdm remove but it still somehow manages to start on boot. Where can I look around for what I did? If I stop gdm then startx again, it goes straight to XBMC like I want.

• Eclipse grinds to a halt when building workspace

  Hi all, This is a bit of a vague question because, frankly, I don't even know where to begin diagnosing the issue. My eclipse (Galileo) installation grinds to a complete halt when it's building the workspace -- to the point where I can't even type. I know the Android SDK I have installed is a major culprit because I can watch the memory usage go through the roof (through the built-in heap monitor) when the Android SDK content loader starts up. Every time I save a file though, the program just stops. The message at the bottom of the screen says Building workspace (74%) and sits there for about 30 or so seconds before completing and returning the performance to normal. I have a few other plugins installed (Maven, SVN, etc) but I'm assuming the main issue is Android. Has anybody had similar issues or any luck correcting this sort of problem? If there's anymore information you think would be helpful, just let me know...I didn't want to do a core dump on this question... I'm running it on Windows 7 64-bit for what it's worth. Thanks! • ASUS P8B WS - Endless Reboots

  I am running a Intel XEON 1245 with 4GBx2 Kingston Memory ECC Unbuffered DDR3 on an ASUS P8B WS motherboard. BIOS Version 0904 x64. This system is a little over a month old. It is running Ubuntu 11.10. This evening I found the machine turned off. When I tried to restart it, it would POST and stop at the GRUB screen. When I selected Ubuntu and hit enter within 2-3 seconds the would shutdown and restart. If I stayed at the GRUB screen and did nothing the system would not cut out. I tried booting off a USB stick and again 2-3 seconds after selecting 'Try Ubuntu without Installing' the machine will cut power and reboot. Things I have tried so far: Resetting the BIOS using the on board jumper Resetting the BIOS settings to default Disconnecting all external hardware - except keyboard & monitor Booting with 1 stick of RAM - I tried different single sticks Ensured that onboard EPU and GPU boost switches are in the off position. I am running a Memtest86 right now and it has been running for 38+ minutes. This is not an OS problem or an overheating issue (I have a CoolerMaster HAF Case with 3 fans besides the CPU fan) I am at a loss as to what to try next. I think the BIOS is mis-configured somehow but I don't know what to look for.
