• Ubuntu 12.04 menu bar, nautilus, terminal, and gtk themes not working after installation of Gimp 2.8

  I installed gimp2.8 from this ppa: ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp after that, my system began having problems. This is my thought process in trying to fix what's happened and the order in which it happened: I noticed the menu bar at the top changed from an opaque black to perfectly clear and the titles of applications and the hidden buttons reacted slowly. No big deal, restarted to see if it fixed it. It didn't, in fact, when the logon screen came up, the password field was grey and boxy like a default windows 98 theme (that's the best I can describe it) as were all the option buttons for gtk programs. I open terminal to try and reinstall gtk, but the terminal is just a black screen with no ability to input commands. I go to a tty and I reinstalled gtk3 and gtk2 (I have both on my system. I don't think they're in conflict, they hadn't been before hand). I restarted. Nothing doing. Log in, nautilus isn't placing icons on my desktop. I click the launcher. It flashes, but no window opens. Try to open by Alt+f2, nothing. I purge ubuntu-desktop, restart, reinstall ubuntu-desktop. Nothing. I have no clue what to do at this point so I'm asking for any help diagnosing the problem and fixing it.

• How to deal with elimination of duplicate logic vs. cost of complexity increase?

  I just wrote some code that is very representative of a recurring theme (in my coding world lately): repeated logic leads to an instinct to eliminate duplication which results in something that is more complex the tradeoff seems wrong to me (the examples of the negative side aren't worth posting - but this is probably the 20th console utility I've written in the past 12 months). I'm curious if I'm missing some techniques or if this is really just on of those "experience tells you when to do what" type of issues. Here's the code... • English major new to programming. What language should I learn first? [closed]

  After working extensively an internet startup in a marketing positions, I've decided to wade into the entrepreneurship pool with a startup of my own. The only problem: I don't have any particular technical skills to speak of. Although I can find a technical co-founder, I'd rather not be the stereotypical 'business guy' drumming his fingers on the desk and asking 'how much longer?' as my technical co-founder codes away. I would like to understand code and what's happening in the backend, even if I don't end up being anything more than a 'passable' programmer. With this in mind, which language should I try to learn first? For the record, I'm quite proficient with HTML, CSS, and a bit of JavaScript. I have some familiarity with PHP because I've toyed around with WordPress a lot, but my knowledge is limited at best. My math skills are quite strong. I took some advanced calculus courses in college since I've always enjoyed the subject. While my goals are to learn web development, I wouldn't mind learning some hardcore object oriented programming skills in C or Java as well.

• Login Screen hangs after entering password

  When I enter my password in the login box nothing happens. It gets stuck. It was running fine earlier. I have installed gnome-panel and cairo-dock, after which, I logged out, logged back in, and choose gnome classic session. I also added a ppa from the webupd8.org to install the themes (link). I opened Ubuntu Tweak tool, and changed the theme to Evolve the whole laptop stopped responding. The keyboard and mouse were unresponsive. So I was forced to do a shut down. Now whenever it starts, I cannot login into Ubuntu. I hear the fan noise, as its spinning very fast, when the laptop freezes.(Probably the CPU is running at 100%). Please help me. How can I login back to Ubuntu? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and have installed all the latest updates.. EDIT: I want to know how can I delete a folder from the file system using the live CD?

  i have installed ubuntu 11.04 inside the windows xp. i have MTS Mblaze USB Modem. • X crashes and GNOME loses all its configuration

  About every 3 days on my desktop (always on), X crashes, gdm restarts and it dumps me at a login screen. When I log in Gnome appears to have lost a lot of its settings: it plays sounds in weird places, UI elements look like they're from the 90s (GTK+ defaults) and it's generally pretty hideous. Note everything works fine. It's not like my profile doesn't exist because I can browse the internet fine (Firefox knows my bookmarks, history, passwords, etc) and my desktop is unscathed (apart from the icon theme). Manually restarting gdm doesn't fix this. I have to do a full reboot. Now I'm almost certain that this is a nvidia issue causing X to baulk (I've seen similarish threads on nvnews) and I'm happy with that (my fault for running their latest drivers all the time). What I'm concerned about is why Gnome looks so fugly. Is there anything I can do to force it to reload its settings without restarting the whole computer. Restarting is an issue for me as I run several daemons that other computers on the network depend upon. This is what I mean by ugly/fugly... Look at that scroll bar!

• Community TFS Build Manager available for Visual Studio 2012 RC

  I finally got around to push out a version of the Community TFS Build Manager that is compatible with Visual Studio 2012 RC. Unfortunately I had to do this as a separate extension, it references different versions of the TFS assemblies and also some properties and methods that the 2010 version uses are now obsolete in the TFS 2012 API. To download it, just open the Extension Manager, select Online and search for TFS Build:   You can also download it from this link: http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/cfdb84b4-285e-4eeb-9fa9-dad9bfe2cd10 The functionality is identical to the 2010 version, the only difference is that you can’t start it from the Team Explorer Builds node (since the TE has been completely rewritten and the extension API’s are not yet published). So, to start it you must use the Tools menu: We will continue shipping updates to both versions in the future, as long as it functionality that is compatible with both TFS 2010 and TFS 2012. • Touchpad issues on HP Pavilion dm4 (can't right click)

  Can anyone help me with my touchpad issues? I have a HP Pavilion dm4 and it has two areas on the bottom of the touchpad to designate right and left clicks. This mostly doesn't work on Ubuntu in the fact that it recognizes any taps on either tap zone as a left click. Instead, I have it set so if I tap anywhere on the pad it makes a left click. There should be, and there are, many ways in the mouse configuration window to simulate a right click using only a touchpad. None of these work. Changing mouse orientation doesn't do anything, "dwell click" also does nothing, and, the oddest part of this problem, whenever I try to turn "Simulated Secondary Click" off (it doesn't work anyways, but just to try to toggle it), the entire theme of my desktop changes to a gray Windows '95ey look. The only way to get rid of this is to close and reopen the mouse preferences window. My computer is fairly new and the Ubuntu installation is less than a day old. I didn't do anything that I think could cause this. The problem is that I can't right click. Help, please?s that I can't right click. Help, please? Afterword: I installed two scripts from http://sansmicrosoft.blogspot.com/2010/10/pavilion-dm4-1160-erratic-touchpad.html . They didn't do anything I couldn't already do, and they did not make it possible for me to right click. :(

• Massive 404 attack with non existent URLs. How to prevent this?

  The problem is a whole load of 404 errors, as reported by Google Webmaster Tools, with pages and queries that have never been there. One of them is viewtopic.php, and I've also noticed a scary number of attempts to check if the site is a WordPress site (wp_admin) and for the cPanel login. I block TRACE already, and the server is equipped with some defense against scanning/hacking. However, this doesn't seem to stop. The referrer is, according to Google Webmaster, totally.me. I have looked for a solution to stop this, because it isn't certainly good for the poor real actual users, let alone the SEO concerns. I am using the Perishable Press mini black list (found here), a standard referrer blocker (for porn, herbal, casino sites), and even some software to protect the site (XSS blocking, SQL injection, etc). The server is using other measures as well, so one would assume that the site is safe (hopefully), but it isn't ending. Does anybody else have the same problem, or am I the only one seeing this? Is it what I think, i.e., some sort of attack? Is there a way to fix it, or better, prevent this useless resource waste? EDIT I've never used the question to thank for the answers, and hope this can be done. Thank you all for your insightful replies, which helped me to find my way out of this. I have followed everyone's suggestions and implemented the following: a honeypot a script that listens to suspect urls in the 404 page and sends me an email with user agent/ip, while returning a standard 404 header a script that rewards legitimate users, in the same 404 custom page, in case they end up clicking on one of those urls. In less than 24 hours I have been able to isolate some suspect IPs, all listed in Spamhaus. All the IPs logged so far belong to spam VPS hosting companies. Thank you all again, I would have accepted all answers if I could.

• Tool to know what is making the desktop load longer than usual

  Is there such a tool? My desktop as of late is taking longer to load than usual. I'd say it takes more than 20 seconds from GDM login until I see the desktop. Aside from disabling all app-indicators and testing it manually one by one, what else should be done? The only indicator I remember activating lately was bluetooth and I have already disabled it from Startup Applications. No improvement. I know of bootchart, but I don't really have a problem with boot. It is only after I login that the issue occurs. I'm on Natty Narwhal. *Updating this thread.... The issue seems to have fixed itself and I did not even do anything. It is really weird. I guess this is how Gnome works (and talk about not recognizing your theme and reverting to Windows 95-like look. How about that?). I have been a long time KDE user and I never encountered issues like this one. The KDE then may have booted into the desktop longer (from KDM) but at least I know it was consistent.

• How do I list all the relation variables and debug them interactively?

  I'm writing a charm that requires a mysql database, I found from looking at other charms that this (below) is how I get the info about the database: user=`relation-get user` password=`relation-get password` mysqlhost=`relation-get private-address` But I just found that from reading the wordpress charm example, is there a way to show all the relation variables that I can use? Also, while debugging my db-relation-changed script, I wanted to ssh into my host and interactively run those commands, for example relation-get user, but it didn't work. I resorted to having to restart everything and use juju log to print them out. This wasted a lot of time. Is there a way to print out these relations, either from my dev box or from the instance running my charm? • A record not resolving

  I have a hosted domain at siteground. On this domain & host I have a subdomain with a wordpress install. I wish to move this blog to another host (hostgator), while keeping the domain with siteground. To do this I created a hosting account at hostgator, got it's ip address and set the A record in siteground's cpanel accordingly: subdomain.example.com 14400 A (ip of hostgator account) Going by this online traceroute tool the records appear to have been updated (over 4 hours ago now) as it now resolves to a theplanet.com server location which hostgator use yet the subdomain is still not resolving from a web browser. The account at hostgator has been setup and is navigable via ip address/~accountname. What's going wrong here? I should add the relevant DNS record at hostgator side looks like this: subdomain.example.com 86400 IN SOA ns483.websitewelcome.com. subdomain.example.com 86400 IN NS ns1.siteground145.com. subdomain.example.com 86400 IN NS ns2.siteground145.com. subdomain.example.com 14400 IN A 74.54.176.3 I'm not sure if the hostgator record should be classed as the SOA record but I don't know enough about it to be sure. Is this the source of the problem?

• Purpose oriented user accounts on a single desktop?

  Starting point: I currently do development for Dynamics Ax, Android and an occasional dabble with Wordpress and Python. Soon, I'll start a project involving setting up WP on Google Apps Engine. Everything is, and should continue to, run from the same PC (running Linux Mint). Issue: I'm afraid of botching/bogging down my setup due to tinkering/installing multiple runtimes/IDE's/SDK's/Services, so I was thinking of using multiple users, each purposed to handle the task at hand (web, Android etc) and making each user as inert as possible to one another. What I need to know is the following: Is this a good/feasible practice? The second closest thing to this using remote desktops connections, either to computers or to VM's, which I'd rather avoid. What about switching users? Can it be made seamless? Anything else I should know? Update and clarification regarding VM's and whatnot: The reason I wish to avoid resorting to VM's is that I dislike the performance impact and sluggishness associated with it. I also suspect it might add a layer of complexity I wish to avoid. This answer by Wyatt is interesting but I think it's only partly suited for requirements (web development for example). Also, in reference to the point made about system wide installs, there is a level compromise I should accept as experessed by this for example. This option suggested by 9000 is also enticing (more than VM's actually) and by no means do I intend to "Juggle" JVMs and whatnot, partly due to the reason mentioned before. Regarding complexity, I agree and would consider what was said, only from my experience I tend to pollute my work environment with SDKs and runtimes I tried and discarded, which would occasionally leave leftovers which cause issues throught the session. What I really want is a set of well defined, non virtualized sessions from which I can choose at my leisure and be mostly (to a reasonable extent) safe from affecting each session from the other. And what I'm really asking is if and how can this be done using user accounts.

This mostly doesn't work on Ubuntu in the fact that it recognizes any taps on either tap zone as a left click. Instead, I have it set so if I tap anywhere on the pad it makes a left click. There should be, and there are, many ways in the mouse configuration window to simulate a right click using only a touchpad. None of these work. Changing mouse orientation doesn't do anything, "dwell click" also does nothing, and, the oddest part of this problem, whenever I try to turn "Simulated Secondary Click" off (it doesn't work anyways, but just to try to toggle it), the entire theme of my desktop changes to a gray Windows '95ey look. The only way to get rid of this is to close and reopen the mouse preferences window. My computer is fairly new and the Ubuntu installation is less than a day old. I didn't do anything that I think could cause this. The problem is that I can't right click. Help, please?s that I can't right click. Help, please? Afterword: I installed two scripts from http://sansmicrosoft.blogspot.com/2010/10/pavilion-dm4-1160-erratic-touchpad.html . They didn't do anything I couldn't already do, and they did not make it possible for me to right click. :(

• what will EcmaScript 6 bring to the table for us

  Our company ported moderate chunks of business logic to JavaScript. We compile the code with a minifier, which further improves performance. Since the language is dynamically typed, it lends itself well to obfuscation, which occurs as a byproduct of minification. We went to great efforts to ensure it positively screams, performance-wise. We can now do what we did before, faster, better, with less code, on more platforms. In summary, we are very satisfied with the current state of the language. I personally love the language especially for its cross-platform nature. So naturally, I read up a lot about the state of JavaScript compilers, performance and compatibility across as many browsers and platforms as I have time to research. The one theme which has been growing louder and louder these days, is the news about ECMAScript 6. So far, what I have been able to gather is that ES6 promises a better development experience; firstly by enabling new ways to do things, secondly by reporting errors early. This sounds great for those who are still waiting for the language to meet their needs before jumping on board. But we have already jumped on board in a big way. Sure, I expect that we will have to do ongoing maintenance and feature revisions on our code through the years, and that we would obviously make use of best practices at the time. But I don't see us refactoring major portions of it to take advantage of language features that are mostly intended to boost developer productivity. I keep wondering, what impact will the language advances ultimately have on our existing, well-written, well-performing code base? Is there something I am missing? Is there something we ought to look out for? Does anyone have tips or guidance on how we should approach the ecmascript.next finalization? Should we care?

• Change spacing of icons in Indicator Applet Complete, preferably by editing a config file?

  Changing icon spacing within Application Indicator Complete. If at all possible, I'd like to space them with about 1-3px between each one. https://launchpad.net/indicator-applet [Website] I'm using 12.04, and in GNOME Classic (No Effects). I'm working from a netbook (1024x600), and am trying to fit everything into one panel for the sake of screen conservation. Ironically, my netbook is often without reliable net access, and so a way to simply edit a config file or the like would be ideal, as opposed to downloading patches, modified packages, etc., but anything would be helpful. Even pointing me in the direction of how to start rebuilding the indicator to meet my needs (if need-be) would be welcome. Does anyone know of a method that would serve my purpose? EDIT: I've downloaded v0.4.93 from the site mentioned above, and took a look inside the archive. Couldn't find anything clearly alluding to object placement/size and such. Maybe just a pointer on where to find those params would do? EDIT 2: Some more info on my WM/DE: I'm pretty sure GNOME classic is gtk2 not gtk3, and equally sure my windows manager is metacity, as opposed to compiz. "equally sure" meaning i could be horribly wrong, but when I edit the metacity css file for my theme (which ive switched to "Adawaita"), it takes effect after logout/login. My inability to modify the spacing persists. Im gonna see if i can contact someone involved in its dev to get their input, will post results here if fruitful.

• Server Setups for Agencies [closed]

  We are considering consolidating our server administration by cutting down on the number of systems we currently use to manage all our websites(~65 websites). Currently we have a testing server and 3 production servers. (2 - cherokee(linode), 1 - apache (mt)) We don't have a dedicated server admin, so I am stuck with managing all these servers, and as a developer, I don't want to deal with all the server hassle. So my main goal is to cut down on the time spent messing with the servers. We have looked at Pagoda Box and AppFog as possibilities. I am not sure if Pagoda Box would be cost effective. With 65+ websites we may end up paying anywhere from 0 to $50+ per website per month. Right now we page about $250 per month for the 4 VPS servers mentioned above. We already use Capistrano for deployment. I have the opportunity to completely overhaul the entire setup and I would like some feedback on where you found your information for large scale server management or how you currently do it. Articles are welcome. In summary: What is new (past 2 years) in simple server management arena? If you work at an agency or have had agency experience, how do/did you manage your sites? a. What is the level of effort for SSL, new site setup, database management, and extension management. b. How did you handle datacenter outages. Anyone with Pagoda Box experience, do you like it and did you have problems with Wordpress, Cakephp, Drupal, Expression Engine or Magento? a. Is it expensive for you? b. How has server uptime been? • Website only displays correctly in IE using compatibility mode?

  As the resident "IT Whiz" at work (ie: I know how to use a computer) I've been asked to develop a website for our small business. I've altered a wordpress theme for the time being and the company is very happy with the results. The only problem I am having with it at the moment is that for some reason the website does not display correctly and Internet Explorer unless I run it in Compatibility Mode. The main problem that I have is that my menu "slider" (it rotates pictures with links to articles etc) does not display at all, neither does the top menu they are just blink text based links. Even with Compatibility Mode enabled the slider and menus come back but the page is not centered unlike on both Firefox and Chrome. My googling has suggested the most common cause of this is old code but I'm not sure where to be looking. Is it likely in the css file or the actual php? Also any ideas on how to trouble shoot the cause of this? As in is there some dev tools or debugger I can use that would highlight "broken" code for me?
