  Suppose I'm trying to run a script of unknown origin, and one of the functions is from a package that is not loaded by the script (an oversight, maybe it was loaded in the .Rprofile of the person who wrote it). How can I find in which package this function resides? There's some information compiled on CRAN, that doesn't require the user to download/install all R packages locally; however as far as I could tell it only gives access to the DESCRIPTION files. RSiteSearch, and its web equivalent, seem to access an online database of all CRAN packages, where presumably a list of all functions would be available. Is there some way of accessing this information? Thanks. Edit: I know sos::findFn, utils::RSiteSearch and search.r-project; what I would like is to get the raw data that these tools use.

• Rails modeling for a user

  When building a rails app that allows a User to login and create data, is it best to setup a belongs_to :user association on every single model? For example, let's say a user can create Favorites, Colors and Tags. And let's say Favorites has_many :tags and Colors also has_many :tags. Is it still important for Tags to belong_to :user assuming the User is the only person who has authority to edit those tags? And a similar question along the same lines: When updating data in FavoritesController, I've come to the conclusion that you perform CRUD operations by always doing something like User.favorites.find(params[:id].update_attributes(param[:favorite]) so that they can definitely only update models that belong to them. Right?

• Saving substrings using Regular Expressions

  I'm new to regular expressions in Java (or any language, for that matter) and I'm wanting to do a find using them. The tricky part that I don't understand how to do is replace something inside the string that matches. For example, if the line I'm looking for is Person item6 [can {item thing [wrap]}] I'm able to write a regex that finds that line, but finding what the word "thing" is (as it may differ among different lines) is my problem. I may want to either replace that word with something else or save it in a variable for later. Is there any easy way to do this using Java's regex engine?

  Hi all, I'm just starting to dabble in consuming a JSON webservice, and I am having a little trouble working out the best way to get to the actual data elements. I am receiving a response which has been converted into a ruby hash using the JSON.parse method. • Is this plain stupid: GIT Sharing Via DropBox?

  I realize that there are similar questions, but my question is slightly different. I'm wondering whether sharing a bare repository via a synchronized DropBox folder on multiple computers would work for sharing code via GIT. Really what I want to know is: is sharing a GIT repo via DropBox (the repo gets updated on each person's local drive) the same as sharing it from one centralized location, e.g., via SSH, git or HTTP? Is this the same or different from sharing a GIT repo via a shared network drive? Note: This is not an empirical question: it seems to work fine. I'm asking whether the way a GIT repo is structured is compatible with this way of sharing. EDIT To clarify/repeat, I'm talking about keeping the GIT repository on DropBox as a bare repository. I'm not talking about keeping the actual files that are under source control in DropBox.

Actually, I would like the right-top corner of the first one to be located at the left-top of the second one.   I'm trying to do an animation where when a person clicks from point A to Point B on screen the object should slowly slide straight across (horizontally) from point A to Point B. • Turning user ID into name (seperate tables) in PHP

  I am currently trying to display the username of people who i am following, the problem is that during the following process, only the ID of me and the person i'm following is stored. I've got it to the point where the ID's are displayed but i'd like to show the names hyperlinked. $p_id is the profile ID. Here's what I've got: $following = mysql_query("SELECT `follower`, `followed` FROM user_follow WHERE follower=$p_id"); I am following: <?php while($apple = mysql_fetch_array($following)){ echo '<a href="'.$apple['followed'].'">+'.$apple['followed'].'</a> '; }?> The usernames are in a different table "users" under the field "username" - I need them to match up with the ID's that are currently displayed, and be displayed. • Deprecated functions not spotted if using "System::Threading::ThreadState" (and others!) C++ VS2005/

  Hi, I'm facing an issue with c++ on vs2005 and also vs2008... here's how you can reproduce the issue.... create a new (c++) project called 'test' (file|new|project) select "Windows Forms Application" and add the 'stdio.h' include and the code fragment below into the test.cpp source file..... -------------------start of snippet-------------------- #include <stdio.h> ... int main(array<System::String ^> ^args) { int i; System::Threading::ThreadState state; char str[20]; sprintf (str, "%s", "test string"); ... -------------------end of snippet-------------------- If you compile the code as above (you'll have to 'buildall' first), you'll get two warnings about 'i' and 'state' being unreferenced (nothing about sprintf being deprecated). If you comment out "System::Threading :Thread state;", you'll get one warning about 'i' being unreferenced and another warning (C4996) for the 'deprecated' sprintf statement.... This issue also occurs for "System::Windows::Forms::MessageBoxIcon", "System::Base64FormattingOptions" (and perhap all 'enum class' types!) Anyone know of the cause and workaround to the issue demonstrated here ( i have other files that demonstate this issue..). (I had started a thread on msdn, but then found this site! see link below) Visual Studio 2005 has stopped warning about deprecated functions

I was wondering if it is possible to write in a dropdownlist or listbox such that if somebody does not want to select from the dropdownlist or listbox, he/she can type the value and if the value exist in the dropdownlist/listbox, it autofills. The person may then select it. If this is not possible in ASP.NET, would anybody know of another control that can be used for the same purpose and how? what I really need is how to allow the writting on the DropDownList, please someone help me!.   I've been racking my brain about how to do this in one query without PHP code. In a nutshell, I have a table that records email activity. For the sake of this example, here is the data: recipient_id activity date 1 delivered 2011-08-30 1 open 2011-08-31 2 delivered 2011-08-30 3 delivered 2011-08-24 3 open 2011-08-30 3 open 2011-08-31 The goal: I want to display to users a single number that tells how many recipients open their email within 24 hours. E.G. "Users that open their email within 24 hours: 13 Readers" In the case of the sample data, above, the value would be "1". (Recipient one was delivered an email and opened it the next day. Recipient 2 never opened it and recipient 3 waited 5 days.) Can anyone think of a way to express the goal in a single query? Reminder: In order to count, the person must have a 'delivered' tag and at least one 'open' tag. Each 'open' tag only counts once per recipient.

  This is really starting to confuse the hell out of me. When do I use them, when don't I? For example I was reading a .cpp on linked lists whose class declaration was: struct CarPart { long PartNumber; char Partname[40]; double UnitPrice; CarPart *next; }; class ListOfParts { int size; public: CarPart *head; ListOfParts(); ~ListOfParts(); const int count() const; void insert( CarPart *item ); CarPart *retrieve( int pos ); }; With this code, why am I allowed to write ListOfParts *pPart = new ListOfParts(); CarPart *pCarPart = new CarPart; Declaring an instance of ListOfParts requires (), but not my CarPart? That's confusing me. When I asked a question before and people told me that such a declaration is a function that returns a ListOfParts object, but not the actual constructor. So I'm guessing this is still something different. What's happening here? PS: Am I correct to assume that the const to the right of count() means I cannot modify any values in count?

• How to correctly pass a float from C# to C++ (dll)

  I'm getting huge differences when I pass a float from C# to C++. I'm passing a dynamic float wich changes over time. With a debuger I get this: c++ lonVel -0.036019072 float c# lonVel -0.029392920 float I did set my MSVC++2010 floating point model to /fp:fast wich should be the standard in .NET if I'm not mistaken, but this didnt help. Now I cant give out the code but I can show a fraction of it.   There's an outlook plugin called Xobni that has a really cool feature, if a contact has an email address, it will fetch that contact's profile picture and display it. Their FAQ states the following: Xobni sends an encrypted email address to Facebook to retrieve the Facebook profile for the person who is currently being viewed in the Xobni sidebar. Your own Facebook profile is never altered by Xobni, and all Facebook privacy settings are strictly followed when viewing other profiles. I'd like to duplicate this functionality. However, I can't figure out which API call they're using. I'm assuming when they say "encrypted email address" that's laymen's terms for the email hash. Once a username is derived, the graph api looks ideal for actually fetching the image, but I'm having trouble going from email hash to profile ID.

• Is it possible to make an online registration process for a course in Google Docs with a cap on registrations?

  I am trying to build an online registration form for an institute I intern at that is running a training programme with multiple courses and hundreds of applicants. I've done registration forms with Google Docs Forms before, but the tricky spot this time round is that I'm trying to put a registration cap on each of the courses. Every person needs to register for one course in every timeslot, and there are seven or so timeslots. However, as seating space in every venue is limited, we would like to cap registrations per course (venue) to 200 per course, after which either a) the applicant will be informed that they need to register for another course in that timeslot if they apply to a full course, or b) ideal case scenario, the option will be greyed out. Is this possible using Google Docs Forms at all? If not, is there a free alternative that might do the job properly?

  Do Hibernate Projection aliases even work? I could swear it just doesn't. At least, it doesn't do what I would expect it to do. I would think setting the alias would mean that "sum(this_.number_of_points)" would be aliased as "number_of_points" and not "y0_". Is there some trick I am missing? Thanks.

• What is the best way for the application to refer to the user?

  Forgive my noobishness, first time poster on stackoverflow! I can have the application read: "view your messages" "view my messages" "edit your profile" "edit my profile" etc. and others like that. Is one of these more correct then the other? I suppose that I could use neither and just leave it without any pronoun, but I would rather not. The person grading is a real stickler for "grammar" in code. Any input would be appreciated!

I mean someone who hasn't grown up to realise that the modern software professional has a range of tools in his toolbox. Someone who has a well-equipped toolbox and then selects the best tool for the job at hand. The person who's knee jerk reaction is, for example, "We must do this is C++!" • download authentication?

  Hi I am sorry if this question has been asked before but I am looking for some sort of download authentication. In other words if I am going to give the user a link to a file, I want to make sure only that person will get it, and get it only once! Is there a simple solution without setting up the whole database. Even better if it's possible to have an ecrypted web link that will let you download a file from my FTP server just once, after that the link becomes invalid. Thanks.
