• Ars Technica .ars URL suffix -- Vanity or SEO Benefit?

  The Technology website Ars Technica has adjusted their URL rewrite rules to end with a .ars. Traditionally, sites have taken advantage of this URL rewriting capability to completely eliminate file suffixes like .html, .php, .aspx etc, under the theory that this made for better SEO (since the content of the URL was more relevant to the content) Ars Technicas, though, look like this: http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2011/03/flow-from-the-poles-drive-sunspot-levels.ars So, is Ars Technica adding the .ars file suffix purely a vanity play? Or is it an SEO trick to improve the site's SEO by cleverly inserting their site name into every URL slug? And, if this is indeed an effective SEO trick, should other sites follow suit?

  I am running on Windows 8 and installed Lubuntu 13.04 in VirtualBox. I cannot login to DD-WRT in Virtualbox. I can login to DD-WRT on Windows 8. I have used the same credentials and tried many times, but to no avail. How can I login successfully to DD-WRT in VirtualBox? I have even tried searching on the Internet but I could not find any relevant solutions. Additional Information: Using Chromium ( I have tried it on Firefox and it does not work ) Enabled secure shell: but it still does not work.   I'm a second-semester Junior working towards a Computer Science degree with a Scientific Computing concentration and a Mathematics degree with a concentration on Applied Discrete Mathematics. So, number crunching and such rather than a bunch of regular expressions, interface design, and networking. I've found that I'm not learning new relevant languages from my coursework and am interested in what the community would recommend me to learn. I know as far as programming methods go, I need to learn more about parallelizing programs, but if there's anything else you can recommend, I would appreciate it. Here's a list of the languages with which I am very experienced (web technologies omitted as they barely apply here). It has been a while since we last heard of this fancy little thing called Mission Control. It came all the way from JRockit and was renamed to Java Mission Control. This is one of the parts which literally survived the convergence strategy between HotSpot and JRockit. With today's Java SE 7 Update 40 you can actually use it again. Java Mission Control 5.2 The former JRockit Mission Control (JRMC) is now called Java Mission Control (JMC) and is a tools suite which includes tools to monitor, manage, profile, and eliminate memory leaks in your Java application without introducing the performance overhead normally associated with tools of this type. Up to today the 5.1 version was available within the Oracle HotSpot downloads which could only be received by paying customers from the Oracle Support Website. Todays release is the first release of Java Mission Control that is bundled with the Hotspot JDK! The convergence project between JRockit and Hotspot has reached critical mass.   Ringhals nuclear power plant, which is part of the Vattenfall Group, is located about 60 km south-west of the beautiful coastal city of Gothenburg in Sweden. A deep concern to reduce environmental impact coupled with an effort to increase plant safety and operational efficiency have led to a recent surge in investments and initiatives around plant modification and plant optimization at Ringhals. A multitude of challenges were faced by the users in various groups that were involved in these projects. First, it was very difficult for users to easily access complex and layered asset and engineering information, which was critical to increased productivity and completing projects on time. Moreover, the 20 or so different solutions that were being used to view various document formats, not only resulted in collaboration complexity but also escalated IT administration costs and woes. Finally, there was a considerable non-engineering community comprising non-CAD specialists that needed easy access to plant data in an effort to minimize engineering disruption.   I am a graduate Computer Science student (Data Mining and Machine Learning) and have good exposure to core Java (3 years). I have read up on a bunch of stuff on the following topics: Design patterns, Java EE Web services (SOAP and REST), Spring, and Hibernate Java Concurrency - advanced features like Task and Executors. I would now like to do a project combining this stuff -- over my free time of course -- to get a better understanding of these things and to kind of make an end to end software (to learn the best design principles etc + SVN, maven). Any good project ideas would be really appreciated. I just want to build this stuff to learn, so I don't really mind re-inventing the wheel. Also, anything related to data mining would be an added bonus as it fits with my research but is absolutely not necessary since this project is more to learn to do large scale software development.

• Windows XP waits for usb drive on almost every operation.

  Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Windows XP operating system, particularly with the USB device that is plugged in - 1TB WD My Book external drive. I haven't found any information about such behaviour when searching in Internet, so I have to ask You. The problem is: when I am using computer, especially during work (programming), when I try to access any information on a hard disk ("internal" one), Windows seems to "consult" it with the external drive. For example, when I open file selection dialog window, if I try to change directory, system activates external drive, reads something (I hear the disk's operational noise) and after some seconds of such pause it makes the operations I requested. There are many situations in which I can reproduce this behavior - opening My Computer, shutting down system, opening partition folder from My Computer - every operation involves the usage of external drive. Please understand me properly - this is not something that happens EVERY time, but at least "many" times a day. What causes such behavior and how can I "turn off" external drive when it's not needed? Thanks in advance for your answers.

• DVD ROM is not working

  (note: I don't know in which StackExchange site to put this question, I'll thank the moderator that will move it to a more appropriate place, if there is a S.E. available for my question). I have a DVD RW drive that is well listed in the bios, and if no CD is in, it is also present in the "My Computer" of my Fedora 16. But when I put a disc on it, the icon disapear from "My Computer", and I can not do anything with this ! (Like erasing a RW disc). I'd like to boot a Fedora 17 Live CD image. I burned it on an other computer but when I try to run it in bios, nothing is done and I'm redirected to Grub of my HD. • Problem upgrading kernel on debian 3.1

  Hi, I have a quite old box in a remote server farm. So I have no direct access. Only remote SSH (and via SSH to a serial console). I haven't updated this box in ages. Now, whenever I want to install a new package, a dependency to glibc appears. Unfortunately, the install of glibc depends on a 2.6 kernel and I am running a venerable 2.4 kernel (one more reason to upgrade). The problem is, that the install of a new kernel has an indirect (over locales) dependency to glibc. So, to install glibc, I need a new kernel. For a new kernel, I need to upgrade glibc. Essentially I am blocked. What's the best way to proceed considering I have no "hardware" access?
