• Gwibber only launches sometimes

  I face this problem where Gwibber only launches sporadically. Sometimes when I click it to launch, it launches and then other times it doesn't. I can't seem to figure out what is preventing it from launching and what sort of information I need to collect, also where to collect it from to make a bug report. I have killed the gwibber-service processes in the System Monitor "it loads three processes called gwibber-service, is this normal" several times and tried to launch Gwibber again, but this doesn't seem to work. The process just called gwibber starts, then the three gwibber-service processes start, then the gwibbber process ends and the three gwibber-service processes remain but the application is still not launching. Generally, I want to know are other people facing the same problem. If someone can give me some guidance on how to triage this problem and get the information need to make a bug report I would be grateful. The upside to this though is at least when it is not launching it is preventing me from wasting endless hours reading my streams on Identi.ca and Twitter, so it is a bit Workrave for microblogging. In which case maybe I shouldn't fix this problem :-)

I am fairly proficient with Python, can write C++ and I am a final year student of computer science engineering I am looking to learn Haskell because I have heard a lot about it. My question is: apart from learning it because of all the good I have heard about it, is it any good for my career? Is it used in the industry? I am curious to learn it but unless it helps me somehow in my career, I am not willing to make that change at this stage. Looking for some personal experiences here. Thanks!

• Securing credentials passed to web service

  I'm attempting to design a single sign on system for use in a distributed architecture. Specifically, I must provide a way for a client website (that is, a website on a different domain/server/network) to allow users to register accounts on my central system. So, when the user takes an action on a client website, and that action is deemed to require an account, the client will produce a page (on their site/domain) where the user can register for a new account by providing an email and password. The client must then send this information to a web service, which will register the account and return some session token type value. The client will need to hash the password before sending it across the wire, and the webservice will require https, but this doesn't feel like it's safe enough and I need some advice on how I can implement this in the most secure way possible. A few other bits of relevant information: Ideally we'd prefer not to share any code with the client We've considered just redirecting the user to a secure page on the same server as the webservice, but this is likely to be rejected for non-technical reasons. We almost certainaly need to salt the password before hashing and passing it over, but that requires the client to either a) generate the salt and communicate it to us, or b) come and ask us for the salt - both feel dirty. Any help or advice is most appreciated.

I just can't figure out how calculus and linear algebra can be helpful on that. I know that calculus has several applications in science, but in this particular field of programming I just can't imagine how calculus can be so important. When I made this question I was trying to be more specific about the area of System's Programming. Algorithm complexity and optimization can be applied to any area of programming not just System's Programming. • Leveraging .Net 4.0 Framework Tools For Encrypting Web Configuration Sections

  I would like to share a few points with regards to encrypting web configuration sections in .Net 4.0. This information is also applicable to .Net 3.5 and 2.0. Two methods can work perfectly for encrypting connection strings in a Web project configuration file:   1-Do It All Yourself! In this approach, helper functions for encrypting/decrypting configuration file content are implemented. Program would explicitly retrieve appropriate content from configuration file then decrypt it appropriately.  Disadvantages of this implementation would be the added overhead for maintaining the encryption/decryption code as well the burden of always ensuring sections are appropriately decrypted before use and encrypted appropriately whenever edited.   2- Leverage the .Net 4.0 Framework (The Way to go!) Fortunately, all needed tools for protecting configuration files are built-in to the .Net 2.0/3.5/4.0 versions with very little setup needed. To encrypt connection strings, one can use the ASP.Net IIS Registration Tool (Aspnet_regiis.exe). Note that a 64-bit version of the tool also exists under the Framework64 folder for 64-bit systems. The command we need to encrypt our web.config file connection strings is simply the following:   Aspnet_regiis –pe “connectionstrings” –app “/sampleApplication” –prov “RsaProtectedConfigurationProvider”   To later decrypt this configuration section:   Aspnet_regiis –pd “connectionstrings” –app “/SampleApplication”   The following is a brief description of the command line options used in the example above. Aspnet_regiis supports many more options which you can read about in the links provided for reference below.   Option Description -pe  Section name to encrypt -pd  Section name to decrypt -app  Web application name -prov  Encryption/Decryption provider   ASP.Net automatically decrypts the content of the Web.Config file at runtime so no programming changes are needed.   Another tool, aspnet_setreg.exe is to be used if certain configuration file sections pertinent to the .Net runtime are to be encrypted.   This is a reminder that Oracle will retire Oracle Linux System Administration (1Z0-403) and Oracle Linux Fundamentals (1Z0-402) on October 31, 2013. We will also re-release exam 1Z0-402 as Oracle Linux Fundamentals (1Z0-409) on November 1, 2013. New Oracle Linux 5 and 6 OCA and OCP certifications are now available. Existing certification holders should note that these retirements suspend the delivery of any further exams, but do not affect your certification. If you currently hold a certification earned by one of these exams, your credential remains fully valid. Retiring Certification Path Oracle Linux Administrator Certified Associate Retiring Exam 1Z0-402 Oracle Linux Fundamentals (this will be re-released as Oracle Linux Fundamentals (1Z0-409) and lead to the  Oracle Linux Certified Implementation Specialist certification.) 1Z0-403 Oracle Linux System Administration These exams will continue to be offered through October 31, 2013. • Where can I find a list of the highest resolution monitors for sale?

  I am always on the lookout for the latest and greatest monitors, but for some reason, I have never found a good resource for this information. And while we know months in advance what new processor will be released, it doesn't seem like we ever know what new monitors will be released until they are. I am tempted to buy a Dell 3008WFP, but since the 30" 2560x1600 monitors have been out for 6 years, I would expect something better is about to be released. Where can I find out what is available in the high resolution / widescreen market and what is soon to be released? • Apt-get saying "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages."

  TL;DR: sudo apt-get install ... saying "Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." The problem I was trying to get the WebApps feature for PP and QQ following this blog post. I ran the sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webapps/preview command to add the repository, but i got a connection error. Since I know my current ISP gives a shaky connection, I tried again and sure enough, it worked. Then I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview, but I realized we had to update apt-get first, so I hit Ctrl + C to stop it. Then I ran sudo apt-get update which worked w/o a fuss, but when I ran sudo apt-get install unity-webapps-preview again later, it showed an error message. Here's the dump: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. The following information may help to resolve the situation: The following packages have unmet dependencies: unity-webapps-preview : Depends: xul-ext-unity but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-websites-integration but it is not going to be installed Depends: xul-ext-webaccounts but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. I think this might be because of me interrupting the earlier command. It hadn't got a chance to output anything, though — I stopped it pretty fast. What I tried I have tried running a number of commands:- sudo apt-get install --fix-broken sudo apt-get autoclean sudo apt-get autoremove sudo apt-get -f install sudoapt-get install ppa-purgeandsudo ppa-purge ppa:webapps/preview` Even after running sudo apt-get upgrade after every try, none of them worked. Research I tried searching Google, looking at a couple of forums and searching on AU, but to no avail. Help would be appreciated.

• Updating large icon in iTunes Connect

  Just wanted to see if I understand properly how/when one can change the "Large icon" for their iOS app in iTunes Connect. Questions are in bold below. To start, first the facts (as I gather) from version 6.6 of the iTC guide (March 2, 2011): The Large Icon is a "locked" piece of version information "You will only be permitted to edit Locked version information when your app is in an Editable state" The "Editable" states are: Prepare For Upload Waiting For Upload Waiting For Review Waiting For Export Compliance Upload Received Rejected Developer Rejected Invalid Binary Missing Screenshot Am I missing anything up until this point? If not, then am I correct to say that the only time I can change an app's Large Icon is when I update the application? Here's a more specific use case: My app is currently on sale, version 2.0 I have version 2.1 ready, and I want the update to coincide with a sale, so I also put a "SALE" banner on top of my large icon (what most devs are doing) I have to upload this "SALE" Large Icon when I upload the binary. If I wait until it's been reviewed, it's too late, and I'll have developer-reject the binary so I can fix it. Is this correct? Say I want the sale to last a week. So at the end of that week, I'll want to switch my Large Icon back to the pre-"SALE" version. Will I necessarily have to upload a new binary at that time? (Also posted on the Developer Forums, but it's getting no love there...)

• What's the best way to generate an NPC's face using web technologies?

  I'm in the process of creating a web app. I have many randomly-generated non-player characters in a database. I can pull a lot of information about them - their height, weight, down to eye color, hair color, and hair style. For this, I am solely interested in generating a graphical representation of the face. Currently the information is displayed with text in the nicest way possible, but I believe it's worth generating these faces for a more... human experience. Problem is, I'm not artist. I wouldn't mind commissioning an artist for this system, but I wouldn't know where to start. Were it 2007, I'd naturally think to myself that using Flash would be the best choice. I'd love to see "breathing" simulated. However, since Flash is on its way out, I'm not sure of a solid solution. With a previous game, I simply used layered .pngs to represent various aspects of the player's body: their armor, the face, the skin color. However, these solutions weren't very dynamic and felt very amateur. I can't go deep into this project feeling like that's an inferior way to present these faces, and I'm certain there's a better way. Can anyone give some suggestion on how to pull this off well?

What's the best way to select these categories? The reason I don't just let users add keywords, and use these for categorization, is because users gain experience points in a certain subject when their tutorial is liked by someone, and in a similar way the Stack Exchange network does, create communities around these subjects.
