• install 64 bit as dual boot with 32 bit

  I downloaded Ubuntu 12.10 - bit .iso onto a bootable USB and want to put it on to my 32 bit 12.10 system as a dual boot, using a totally separate 1 Tb disk [which already has data on it]. However, when I go to restart and hit F8 fir BIOS set-up, I can change all the settings except the boot search order. Is there some other way to force the startup to read the USB first? Is the fact that I cannot change the search order to do with the fact that the 32 bit OS was 'Installed in legacy mode' not 'EFI? How can I rectify this? (This might be related -- might I need to update my BIOS for my Intel DX38BT motherboard? I think their last upgrade was 2009.)

• I cannot log in after theme change

  After changing the gtk-theme in the gnome tweak took I was taken out of the session to the login screen and now I cannot log in. I can only log in using the guest account. So in the grub menu I selected the recovery mode and in the resulting menu I selected root-drop to root shell prompt. Once there I did a couple of things I've found in several pages and in the forums. 1.gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme This is what I got: (process:642):WARNING: Command line 'dbus-launch –autolunch=4438d024dd45ef7fb2d3f4ab0000000f –binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n and nothing changes 2.gconftool-2 --type=string -s /desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme Radiance with this I was trying to change the gtk theme to the Radiance one. • Video playing is slow on 12.04

  I started using Ubuntu a very short time ago, and it was working perfectly! I upgraded to 12.04 yesterday, and today I realize that everything is running slow. For example, video streaming online, from sites such as Youtube is not working correctly, audio and video breaks constantly. I have a 64 bit system, with a Intel® Core™2 Duo, 2.10GHz × 2 . I don't know what more to add. I tried free -m on the terminal, it returned that I had only 524MB free from 3858MB. All that i have running at this point is Mozilla Firefox.

• Nvidia Powermizer Performance Levels

  Is there anyway to configure Nvidia Powerimizer performance levels? My current setup has 3 power levels with the lowest one being 50mhz. The problem with this it that it lags compiz when it goes to the lowest performance level 0. Minimizing, maximizing, dragging windows, etc. are all sluggish when it's at the lowest level. Once powermizer leaves level 0 everything is very smooth and runs great. Is there anyway for me to remove level 0 and just run Level the two higher levels 1/2? I don't want to complete disable powermizer, but I can't stand the lagging once powermizer goes into performance level 0. Setting the option "prefer maximum performance" fixes the problem as it disables powermizer, but the GPU is overkill at stock speeds for most desktop use @ 850mhz. intel i5 2500k asus gene-z z68 evga 560ti fpb (driver 295.40) ubuntu 12.04 LTS x64

• Windows 7 professional won't boot after installing ubuntu 11.10 alongside

  I can't boot into windows 7 professional after installing ubuntu 11.10 alongside windows as a dual boot. Windows starts to boot but then it stops during start up and "crashes". I do not have an installation or repair disc and windows is not registered as I built the computer in a class. Please help anybody who is familiar with ubuntu. Optimally I would like to just uninstall ubuntu altogether as GRUB scares me a little and Ubuntu isn't as good as windows 7 and "Bleeped" stuff up. I tried google and nothing that great came up and also I can't find a phone # to contact ubuntu/linux. :-( Specs: OS: Windows 7 professional x64, Ubuntu unity 11.10; CPU: Intel Celeron 2.6 GHz; 2 GB of RAM; Built in september or october 2011. Desktop Homebuilt PC.

• Wifi connection problems

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a HP Pavilion DV2750ea. The wifi card is an Intel 4965AGN. When I first started using Ubuntu on this laptop it connected wirelessly to the network. Then it suddenly stopped. The Wifi card power light is off and all information says the card is disabled. When the laptop is powered on the wifi power light turns on and stays on until Ubuntu finishes loading. I have replaced the wifi card and the wifi switch module with no change. Please can you help.

  I bought a brand new computer yesterday (Toshiba Satellite Pro L770-10T : Intel Core i5 2410M, 2,3 GHz, 4096 Mo RAM, nVidia GeForce GT 525M) that simply won't boot any livecd I tried. I am using debian/ubuntu for a long time but this is the first time I can't boot a livecd Here is what I tried without success: Ubuntu 11.04 i386 and x64 both desktop and alternate Debian stable livecd old working ubuntu livecds including 8.x 9.x 10.x On ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso I had a kernel panic On 11.04 packages were corrupted although md5 and sha1 were correct I must add that those were burned on different cds CD-R or CD-RW.   I am trying to use Nvidia Optimus on my laptop by using Bumblebee, I have an Intel Core i5 with an Nvidia Geforce GT 630M. I have followed the instructions on the wiki page at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bumblebee, but when trying to run optirun with Firefox (or any other program, like glxspheres), I get the following error: [ 1921.452820] [ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU - error: Could not load GPU driver [ 1921.452905] [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled.   I want to use Ubuntu. I have Win 7 Home Premium 32-bit right now... I used to have 64 on this laptop (Toshiba Satellite c650) but my disc got a ring of death. Intel Penium CPU B940 2.00GHz, 4GB RAM Also, I'm guessing I need an image mounter such as PowerISO to install Ubuntu, if I don't have a DVD lying around that I can mount to? I'm a noob. • ubuntu freezes daily

  I have been using ubuntu daily for about 2 weeks now. I really like it but I have noticed that it freezes daily when I have things like chromium and firefox open or when I start watching videos. I realize these might be memory intensive apps/actions but I doubt that with my comps specs they would cause it to freeze. When I installed ubuntu, I remember that it warned me about installing it in a ext2 partition and not in a ext4 one. Could that be the issue? and is there a way to fix it without reinstalling? edit: specs are, 1.9gb ram & Intel® Core™2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz × 2; ubuntu 12.04x64

  When I am writing up stored procedures in SSMS sometimes I need to know what column types are used in a table. For instance I will know the table name but I might not remember exactly the length of a varchar column or if a column stored the data as an integer or varchar. And I may not want to scroll through all the tables in Object Explorer to find the one I want. A lot of times it is easier if I can just write a quick query to pull up the information I need. The syntax to do something like this is pretty easy. SELECT COLUMN_NAME, DATA_TYPE, CHARACTER_MAXIMUM_LENGTH FROM yourdbname.information_schema.columns WHERE TABLE_NAME = ‘yourtablename’ After running that you will get a listing in the Results pane just like any other query with the column name, data type and length (if any). • Ubuntu won't boot on windows starter

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS yesterday from a usb, but it only boots into Windows unless the usb is in, then it boots into the Ubuntu loader where I can choose Ubuntu vs. Windows. What's the problem? I run windows starter on a netbook with 1 gb ram and intel atom processor. I tried to install boot-repair but it won't work either. I follow the instructions for the Terminal and it seems to go right until I try launching it - then it says that it does not know the command boot-repair. I really like Ubuntu, it lets this netbook run smoothly and better than ever before but I don't think I want to boot from a usb every time.

  Linux OS (Ubuntu 12.10) starts up (user login, my personal picture of a beautiful Norwegian fjord-landscape fills the background), but the main menu on the left side, and the pictograms (battery state etc.) at the upper right corner of the screen, do not show up. This occurred yesterday quite suddenly after six or seven weeks working with Ubuntu 12.10. Then I started in recovery mode and performed a file system check (fsck) but that takes hours and finally a message ¨Sorry Ubuntu has experienced an internal error etc¨ appeared. How can I determine what has gone wrong and eventually, how can I solve it? So that I can work again using Ubuntu 12.10 (on a dual-boot system, Intel i7, ASUS P8P67 motherboard).

• Shutdown after waking up

  This issue appeard after installing last week's updates from Update Manager. When waking up after suspend, the OS starts loading and it halts unexpectedly, before the load is complete. I don't get to see login screen. This worked well last week, before installing updates. Then I need to remove laptop's battery, wait a while, then plug it and start again (otherwise power button won't work). Is anybody else experiencing this behavior? I have an HP DV7 with an intel core i7.

• Detect rotated rectangle collision

  I'm trying to implement a script that detects whether two rotated rectangles collide for my game. I used the method explained in the following article for my implementation in Google Dart. 2D Rotated Rectangle Collision I tried to implement this code into my game. Basically from what I understood was that I have two rectangles, these two rectangles can produce four axis (two per rectangle) by subtracting adjacent corner coordinates. Then all the corners from both rectangles need to be projected onto each axis, then multiplying the coordinates of the projection by the axis coordinates (point.x*axis.x+point.y*axis.y) to make a scalar value and checking whether the range of both the rectangle's projections overlap. When all the axis have overlapping projections, there's a collision. First of all, I'm wondering whether my comprehension about this algorithm is correct. If so I'd like to get some pointers in where my implementation (written in Dart, which is very readable for people comfortable with C-syntax) goes wrong. Thanks!

  My question may look bit philosophical and nonsense! But I need to know kind of instructions those are not well suitable in high level languages even in c? Or rarely use in the development of software? Like read/write content of CPU registers may useful in debugging programs. And access to cache memory required when developing OS (maybe I am wrong at this point). Is this kind of instruction available languages like Java, Python, C? I also have a second question: And Why all high level languages not having same uniform syntax; at-least same standard library interface name? In python there is and. Or operator is almost same as && and ||. I think Python is developed after C but space indentation is compulsory in Python. Why Python does not use brackets {}. I already know this question going to be highly down-voted.

• My ubuntu 11.10 gets weird lately

  I have quite a lot problems lately(about 2 weeks) running Ubuntu 11.10. First, flash playback in chrome hangs and lags all the time. While in Firefox is better, but still lags. Playing video files in the preinstalled Movie Player lags too. Second, I've turned automatic on and in some occasions, after I switched the computer on and successfully loaded the desktop, however, in just a minute or so, the screen just got black out and directed me back to the login page. I thinks there are bugs, please tell me how to correct those. Sysinfo: CPU: i5-2400 MB: GA H61M D2P B3 (no video card) Drive: Intel 320 40GB Thanks. p.s. should I upgrade to 12.04??

• Drives will not show up on PCI RAID card in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  Computer specs Intel E8200 Dual Core MSI G45M MB Ultra U12-40739 PCI Expansion Card - 2 SATA Internal Ports, 1.5Gbps, RAID 0, 1, JBOD 6 GB DDR2 Q1. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Amahi, for using Grey Hole, last night. The two disc on the raid card do not show up under Ubuntu 12.04LTS but they do show up under grey hole so I know the drives and the raid card are working and there. I need to access them in Ubuntu to format them and place folders on them but I can not see them or figure out how to access them. Q2. Only 4 of the six drives connected to the MB are showing in Ubuntu, but they show as active in grey hole. I also need to access these drives in Ubuntu as this is my storage server. I am new to LINUX so any help you can provide with simple directions will be greatly appreciated . Thank you Mechh69

• Clock running too fast

  I'm currently (for some days now) having the problem, that my Ubuntu clock runs to fast. and by to fast I mean like: last time I adjusted it was at 4 PM, now (10:25 PM) it shows 10:57 PM ! Any ideas how to fix that? Could it have something to do with handbrake? (I'm currently ripping my DVD collection, so handbrake is always running). • No Mouse Pointer - ubuntu 13.10

  just installed 13.10 on my HP Envy M6 laptop and have no mouse pointer. My USB mouse does not work and neither does the track pad. When I booted from a USB key everything worked OK but once installed it seems to have broken the mouse. Unlike other posts, there is no flicker, it simply doesn't work at all. My laptop is an i5 with 6gb and dual Intel and AMD radeon graphics. Any help would be gratefully received as I really can't stand Windows 8 any longer. Thanks.
