• How do I convert an arbitrary list of strings to a SQL rowset?

  I have a simple list of strings, which may be of arbitrary length. I'd like to be able to use this list of strings as I would use a rowset. The app in question is running against SQL Server. To be clearer, if I do SELECT 'foo', 'bar', 'baz' I get 'foo', 'bar', and 'baz' as fields in a single row. I'd like to see each one of them as a separate row. Is there a SQL (or SQLServer-specific) function or technique that I'm missing, or am I going to have to resort to writing a function in an external scripting language?

• Why self.view is not available

  I have this code in the main view controller and it is working just fine and as I wanted. loadingActionSheet = [[UIActionSheet alloc] initWithTitle:@"Posting To Twitter..." delegate:nil cancelButtonTitle:@"Cancel" destructiveButtonTitle:nil otherButtonTitles:nil]; [loadingActionSheet showInView:self.view]; I wanted that code to be reusable from different part of the project so I moved it in a separate file (UIView based). The poblem that I am facing is that self.view is not available there and I don't know why because I am learning and I don't know enough to understand what I am missing. What do I have to do/add/change to have the actionsheet shown in my current view even if that code lives somewhere else?

• Best way to parse XMPP-like XML streams?

  I am working on a server application which receives data over a TCP socket in an XMPP-like XML format, i.e. every child of the <root> element essentially represents one separate request (stanza). The connection is closed as soon as </root> is received. I do know that I must use a stream parser like SAX, somehow. Though, for convenience, I'd prefer to have a tree-like interface to access each stanza's child elements. (The data sent with every request is not large so I think it makes sense to read each stanza as a whole.) What's the best way to realize that in Python (preferably v3)? This is the code I'd like to build it in.   I'm trying to figure out how to allow a user to enter in a string of tags (keywords separated by spaces) in a textbox to filter a grid of results. Here are the tables: PACKETS *PacketID Name PACKETTAGS *PacketTagID PacketID TagID Tags *TagID Name Here is the basic query without the WHERE parameters: SELECT Packets.Name, Tags.Name AS Tag, PacketTags.PacketTagID FROM Packets INNER JOIN PacketTags ON Packets.PacketID = PacketTags.PacketID INNER JOIN Tags ON PacketTags.TagID = Tags.TagID I need to filter out all the Packets that don't have tags that match any of the words BUT ALSO ONLY include the Packets that have the tags entered in the string of text (spaces separate the tags when entered into the textbox) I'm starting with the basics by figuring this out in t-SQL first but ultimately I need to be able to do this in Linq-to-SQL

• Is my way of doing threads in Android correct?

  Hi, I'm writing a live wallpaper, and I'm forking off two separate threads in my main wallpaper service. One updates, and the other draws. I was under the impression that once you call thread.start(), it took care of everything for you, but after some trial and error, it seems that if I want my update and draw threads to keep running, I have to manually keep calling their run() methods? In other words, instead of calling start() on both threads and forgetting, I have to manually set up a delayed handler event that calls thread.run() on both the update and draw threads every 16 milliseconds. Is this the correct way of having a long running thread? Also, to kill threads, I'm just setting them to be daemons, then nulling them out. Is this method ok? Most examples I see use some sort of join() / interrupt() in a while loop...I don't understand that one...

• Netbeans 7.2 not starting

  I recently installed Netbeans 7.2 beta and it worked fine. Then I installed Netbeans 7.2 final release on top of beta and during the installation, Netbeans 7.1 and Netbeans 7.12 were there. Now when I launch Netbeans, it does not go beyond "loading modules" stage. Simply the Netbeans screen disappear few seconds after the launch. Then I did the following. Uninstalled all the Netbeans versions and re-installed Netbeans 7.2 Deleted AppData/Netbeans folder Deleted User/.nbi folder Searched the registry and deleted Netbeans related entries. (But only one entry was found) Deleted Netbeans Folder in Program Files folder. Uninstalled and Re-installed in a separate drive. Uninstalled and Re-installed under another user account. None of the above worked, the only thing I did not try was to re-install the Windows XP operating system. It there any option to try before re-installing the operating system?

• Selectively parsing log files using Java

  I have to parse a big bunch of log files, which are in the following format. SOME SQL STATEMENT/QUERY DB20000I The SQL command completed successfully. SOME OTHER SQL STATEMENT/QUERY DB21034E The command was processed as an SQL statement because it was not a valid Command Line Processor command. EDIT 1: The first 3 lines (including a blank line) indicate an SQL statement executed successfully, while the next three show the statement and the exception it caused. darioo's reply below, suggesting the use of grep instead of Java, works beautifully for a single line SQL statement. EDIT 2: However, the SQL statement/query might not be a single line, necessarily. Sometimes it is a big CREATE PROCEDURE...END PROCEDURE block. Can this problem be overcome using only Unix commands too? Now I need to parse through the entire log file and pick all occurrences of the pair of (SQL statement + error) and write them in a separate file. Please show me how to do this!

  I'm looking to learn WPF, and I'd like to get a book to help in the process. Most of the popular questions on SO regarding actual books are from 2008, and I wanted to see if recommendations for books had changed at all. WPF Unleashed, which seems to be the most popular recommendation, was published in 2006, which is quite a while ago, with the lightening-quick pace that Microsoft has been following with .NET. Does this book still work? For some background, I'm a web developer (using MVC, so MVVM makes sense to me conceptually), looking to make the jump to desktop development. I did C# a while ago, but I'll be picking up a separate C# book to get up to speed on that. I am not interested in Silverlight. I am not necessarily interested in flashy UIs right now, as I'm working on business software but what I am interested in is good, clean, intuitive user interfaces.

How should be my mappings in this case ? Should I use References or HasOne ? Someone could give an example ? • Managing tabs and their effects.

  I have two separate areas in my form. Left side for radio buttons, combo boxes, etc. Right side for tabs and even tabs within tabs. For each tab selected, I'd like to display different controls on the left side for use in that tab. I guess that it makes no sense to store those on a separate table called advantages, because it will never be used to anything else despite display, and I fill it as too overkill. So I was thinking about creating a varchar255 field on this product table, and allow values to be inserted like: Very nice;Very good;Very cool On a free-form text input field. Then split those on a php array. My question is: Is it out there, a better approach ?

• How to bundle C code in C shell script?

  I have a C shell script that calls two C programs - one after the another with some file handling before, in-between and afterwards. Now, as such I have three different files - one C shell script and 2 .c files. I need to give this script to other users. The problem is that I have to distribute three files - which the users must keep in the same folder and then execute the script. Is there some better way to do this? [I know I can make one C code file out of those two... but I will still be left with a shell script and a C code. Actually, the two C codes do entirely different things... so I want them to be separate]

• Is there a best practice for maintaining history in a database?

  I don't do database work that often so this is totally unfamiliar territory for me. I have a table with a bunch of records that users can update. However, I now want to keep a history of their changes just in case they want to rollback. Rollback in this case is not the db rollback but more like revert changes two weeks later when they realized that they made a mistake. The distinction being that I can't have a transaction do the job. Is the current practice to use a separate table, or just a flag in the current table? It's a small database, 5 tables each with < 6 columns, < 1000 rows total.

  Hi, I have made a leaderboard table on my site, which returns the users in the MySQL database with the highest scores (score is a separate field). The fields in the leaderboard table are 'rank' 'username' and 'score'. I would like to link each username in the table to it's own profile page. The profile pages are in the format /profile.php?user=$username. How would I go about adding an <a href> within the table (which is echoed in php): echo '<tr><td>' .$a. '</td><td><a href="profile.php?user=' .$row['username']. '">' .$row['username']. '</a></td><td>'.$row['count'].'</td></tr>'; I've tried the above, but it doesn't seem to work. It shows the usernames, but they don't have any hyperlinks. Thanks

Here is the sample POJO class class Product{ int product_id; String name; String description; } and Class Item{ int item_id; String name; String description; int quantity; int product_id; //Note that there is no composed product object. } Now I want to perform a query like select * from Product p left outer join Item i on p.product_id = i.item_id I want a multidimensional array as an output of this query so that I can have separate instances of Product and Item, instead of one composed in another. Is there any way to do this in Hibernate?

• Mysql search design

  I'm designing a mysql database, and i'd like some input on an efficient way to store blog/article data for searching. Right now, I've made a separate column that stores the content to be searched - no duplicate words, no words shorter than four letters, and no words that are too common. So, essentially, it's a list of keywords from the original article. Also searched would be a list of tags, and the title field. I'm not quite sure how mysql indexes fulltext columns, so would storing the data like that be ineffective, or redundant somehow? A lot of the articles are on the same topic, so would the score be hurt by so many of the rows having similar keywords? Also, for this project, solutions like sphinx, lucene or google custom seach can't be used -- only php & mysql. Thanks!

• Why so many individual System.Web.* DLLs?

  I've been thinking about ways to refactor a fairly expansive class/utility library I have, and one thing I think I want to do is split off any higher-level helper utilities that introduce new dependencies. I read some previous questions here, and one that I particularly noticed was a comment about how Microsoft freely uses namespaces across DLLs. The example given was System.Web - it's in the base framework, but there's also a System.Web.dll that adds more functionality to the namespace if you want it. I also noticed several other System.Web.* DLLs available, and I was wondering if there's a reason why they wouldn't be combined into a single DLL. Could it be that they have their own individual dependencies and Microsoft (like me) wanted to separate assemblies along those lines? Or is it for easier maintenance? Something else entirely?

I am using struct like struct header { unsigned port : 16; unsigned destport : 16; unsigned not_used : 7; unsigned packet_length : 9; }; struct header HR; here this value of header i need to put in separate char array. i did memcpy(&REQUEST[0], &HR, sizeof(HR)); but value of packet_length is not appearing properly. like if i am assigning HR.packet_length = 31; i am getting -128(at fifth byte) and 15(at sixth byte). if you can help me with this or if their is more elegant way to do this. thanks

  Hello all, I have a few onclick and on mouseover events in my html generated by PHP, something like this: <div onmouseover="fave('heart_<?php echo $row['id']; ?>';" class="heart"><a href=""></a></div> I wish to make use of unbind on the mouseover but it hasn't worked when I tried this: $('#'+ id).unbind('mouseover'); So I am guessing unbind will only work with events created by JQuery?   Is there a way to open multiple AI files (say 3 individual files) and somehow save in a way that I can open the same 3 files simultaneously in the future? I always want the multiple files to open together. Situation: We design products with AI. A single product may have multiple versions. The designer typically creates 1 AI file, then puts all versions of the product in the single file. I need them to put each version in a separate file for an integration project, but this creates more work for them. The solution I'm looking for would allow them to open all the relevant AI file and somehow same them all as a group. Next time, they open the group and all AI files open together. Thank you

• Where does the data model go in a Prism app?

  I'm having trouble where to put our data model in our Prism app. Most, if not all or our data will be coming from web services and the web services are unique for each module. Unfortunately, there will be objects that need to be shared (such as a person/user object). I'm really torn about whether to add these services directly to the module, so that each is truly independent, or create a separate project to house the web service proxies and business entities. The modules are being built by different teams, but will all live in the same solution (and source control, of course).

• How does the default Camera iPhone app manages to save a photo so fast?

  Hello everyone. So far I've managed to create an app for iPhone that takes multiple images with about a 3 second interval between each. I`m processing each image in a separate thread asynchronously and everything is great till it gets to the moment for saving the image on the iPhone disk. Then it takes about 12 seconds to save the image to the disk using JPEG representation. How does Apple do it, how do they manage to save a single image so fast to the disk is there a trick they are using? I saw that the animations distract the user for a while, but still the time needed is below 12 seconds! Thanks in advance.

• Error Handling in Model (MVC)

  I was wondering what the excepted standard is for handling errors in the Model. Currently I have 'setError' and 'getError' methods that's in use by all my Models. This means I'm only concerned with whether a call to a method in my Model is true or false. If it's false then I would use $this-model-getError() in my Controller. Additionally I'm contemplating setting up a separate file that contains all my errors. One file per model, also wanted to have thoughts on this.
