• Jersey 2.0 Milestone 2 Now Available

  Jersey 2.0 milestone 2 is now available. It builds upon the first milestone and adds several new features such as server-side asynchronous processing, server-side content negotiation, improved JAX-RS parameter injection, and several others. The REST endpoints can be published on Java SE HTTP Server, Grizzly 2 HTTP container, and some basic Servlet-based deployments. It also provides HTTPURLConnection-based client API implementation. Read about these and more about what's new in Marek's detailed post. Of course this is also the future reference implementation for JAX-RS 2.0. Feel like trying it out? Simply go to Maven Central (of course none of this is production quality at this point). The latest JAX-RS Javadocs and Jersey 2.0 API docs are good starting points to explore. • Is there benefit to maintain a large project with bad code?

  I'm currently maintain a large project with more than 100000 LOC. The code use the MFC as its framework, in genral, it only has interface part which heavily use the mfc api and a business logic part which full of bad code, confusing logic. The company has some small features delivered to the customer each year(most features are adding code to exisiting project, finding some reference of some api or variable and it' s no different with fixing 3-4 bugs ), most of the tasks are to resove issue and optimize performance . Like other company with maintaining position, it value people who knows much logic about its product. There are people who can quickly finish the job on such project, is it worth to train myself like such a programmer? Is there benifits to work on such project for a long time?

In discussing functionality with a client today, the topic of Site Directory came up and the comment of “well, we use it but it is too bad it is not available in 2010” was made … and huge sense of huh?!? came to me. Well, the item that escaped me came to light (and I know there are others).  So researching about it was not only an option it was/is my duty. • (Joomla 1.6) Template position descriptions don't refresh

  I want to change a description of a template position, so when I go to Admin-Extensions-Module Manager I see a different description of a module position in the position list when I edit a module. However, when I change (for instance) the template 'beez_20' and want to rename the name of the position 'debug', I change the description (TPL_BEEZ_20_POSITION_DEBUG) in the language file 'languages\en-GB\en-GB.tpl_beez_20.sys.ini' to something different, say 'Abracadabra'. However, the changes don't appear in the position list and I can find no reference whatsoever of how or when the ini files are read or maybe cached. Does anyone has a clue?

  Silverlight has a method called HtmlPage.PopupWindow() that opens new web browser window with a specific page. You can find this method in the namespace System.Windows.Browser. If you haven’t in your project, add a reference to System.Windows.Browser. • Where is EasUS coming from?

  I have downloaded the Universal USB Installer and Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop as described on your site. I installed it to a 16Gb USB stick including the format option. Now when I try to boot from the stick into Ubuntu I get a couple of lines of script then a screen with EasUS Todo Backup with Backup. Recovery, Clone and Tools options, but no sign of Ubuntu starting. Where is the start Ubuntu option please? I can find no reference to EaseUS on your help pages.

• Ubuntu 13.10 change first weekday to Monday in calendar applet

  Before the update (I was using 13.04), editing: sudo gedit /etc/default/locale so that LC_TIME="en_GB.UTF-8" does the job. However in 13.10, this does not work anymore. I've tried editing: sudo gedit /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_AU sudo gedit /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_GB sudo gedit /usr/share/i18n/locales/en_US so that first_weekday 2 in each of the files, but this also does not work. • How should UI layer pass user input to BL layer?

  I'm building an n-tier application, I have UI, BL, DAL & Entities (built from POCO) projects. (All projects have a reference to the Entities). My question is - how should I pass user input from the UI to the BL, as a bunch of strings passed to the BL method and the BL will build the object from the parameters, or should I build the objects inside the UI submit_function and send objects as parameters? EDIT: I wrote n-tier application, but what I actually meant was just layers.

  I am developing a tool for simulating systems like the Gray-Scott model (That is systems where spatial distribution depends on time). The actual model is loaded from a DLL or shared object and the simulation is performed by a Simulation object. There are at least two situations when the simulation needs to be destroyed: The user loads a new model The user changes the size of the domain To make sure nothing goes wrong, the current Model, Simulation, and rendering Thread are all managed by an ApplicationState object. But the two cases above are initiated from two different UI objects. Is it then ok to distribute a reference to the ApplicationState object to all panels that need to access at least one method on the ApplicationState object? Another solution would be to use aggregation so that the panel from which the user chooses model knows the simulation parameter panel. Also, the ApplicationState class seems somewhat clumsy, so I would like to have something else

  Pash is an open source reimplementation of Windows PowerShell. It was released in 2008, and has been idle since then. I would like to take up the mantle. It's not clear what the license is. There is no LICENSE file or license details in the code. The only reference to a license I can find is on this page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pash/ where it says: "License: BSD License, GNU General Public License (GPL)" But I'm not sure if I can take that as authoritative. I have tried to contact the author but he has not responded. I would hate to proceed with this project and later discover that I am violating a license, and have the project crippled as a result.

• How to build list of items available in World of Warcraft?

  There are a number of non-Blizzard sites that show a complete list of available items in World of Warcraft (such as wowhead, etc). I would like to know the best (easiest) way to compile a similar list. I believe some sites are based on user-entered input, which I would like to avoid. Looking at the lua API, it seems that there are functions to get a list of items, but it's not clear if I can just download everything (I remember a reference to throttling somewhere, can't find it now). Does anyone have code samples that would do this, or links to source? Also, Eve Online has made a database of items available (and I do mean SQL database file for download, not the Armory) - is there anything similar for Wow? I'm just looking for the names and stats, not the graphic icons.

• Should I create an Enum mapping to my database table

  I have a database table containing a list of systems relevant to the tool I am building, mostly in-house applications, or third-party systems we receive data from. This table is added to infrequently, approx every 2 months. One of these systems is Windows itself, which is where we store our users' LANs, and I now need to explicitly reference the ID relating to Windows to query for user name, team etc. I know it would be bad practice to embed the ID itself into the code, so my question is what would be the best way to avoid this? I'm assuming my options are: create a global constant representing this ID create a global enum containing all systems now create a global enum and add systems to it as & when they are required in the code retrieve the ID from the database based on system name I appreciate this may seem a trivial question, but I am going to have many situations like this during the course of this build, and although we are in complete control of the database I would like to conform to best practice as far as possible. • AdWords traffic not (properly) reflected in Analytics

  I have an AdWords account, which was set to use Auto-tagging of URLs. When looking at the Analytics account for that site, I couldn't find any reference to AdWords traffic either in the Advertising section or the Traffic Sources section. So I manually constructed the URL tags, and updated the Campaign Ad. Once the ad was approved and the clicks started coming through again, I could see the results in the Traffic Sources section of Analytics. In the Sources Campaigns section, my campaign was listed, and under Sources All Traffic, it was registering the same level of traffic from google/adwords. However, the Advertising AdWords section is still drawing a blank. Any ideas? Are there explicit steps needed to enable full tracking of AdWords campaigns? If it is relevant, the Adwords campaign was set up with one account, and the Analytics tracking with another, but both accounts have full access to both AdWords and Analytics.

• How can I reconnect to a ssh session after a broken pipe?

  So I was running apt-get upgrade on a server when the router decided it had been too long since it last made me angry: It dropped all connection. Moral of the story is to use screen a lot when you're on a bum router. Anyway, I logged back in and found in htop that the process was still hanging there, still waiting for my Y/n to upgrade (hadn't hit it yet, luckily). Is there any way I can reattach to a session that had been broken off? I ended up just killing it since it wasn't in the middle of package management but it would be great to know for future reference.

  Many times there is the need to load external resources into the program, may they be graphics, audio samples or text strings. Is there a patten for handling the loading and the handling of such resources? For example: should I have a class that loads all the data and then call it everytime I need the data? As in: GraphicsHandler.instance().loadAllData() ...//and then later: draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().getData(WATER_IMAGE)) //or maybe draw(x,y, GraphicsHandler.instance().WATER_IMAGE) Or should I assign each resource to the class where it belongs? • Why doesn't this ContentLoader project (VS2010 e) recognize Microsoft.Build.dll?

  I am working with an XNA content loader sample. In the references for the project (VS 2010 Express) there are: Microsoft.Build Microsoft.Build.Framework //as well as the standard XNA framework and graphics references To emulate this project, I am trying to first add a reference to Microsoft.Build.dll. But Visual Studio warns me that it cannot load the .dll. I looked at MSDN and the document referenced Microsoft.Build.Evaluation. This is suppose to be available in the Microsoft.Build.dll and then I'll have access to the Project class. Has anyone had any experience with this?

  I've spent more time than i should trying to get my ray picking program working. I'm pretty convinced my math is solid with respect to line plane intersection, but I believe the problem lies with the changing of the mouse screen touch into 3D world space.
