  I currently have Windows 8 32-bit installed from MSDN (I didn't realise at the time that my processor supports 64-bit). I understand that you can't upgrade within Windows 32-bit to 64-bit directly from the ISO. I have burned the ISO to a DVD, and have attempted booting from this drive. The problem I am encountering: The operating system couldn't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors. File: CI.dll Error code: 0xc0000221 You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device), contact your system administrator or PC manufacturer. • PPTP server stuck at "GRE: Bad checksum from pppd"

  I am a network engineer having quite limited experience with Ubuntu. I have been following up these online instructions to set up a pptp server but without much luck to get it to work. My server is a vm running an Apple Xserve behind a Cisco firewall. I made sure tcp 1723 and GRE are opened for the box. • Ubuntu Natty: 32-bit userland, 64-bit kernel?

  I'm trying to manually install a 64-bit kernel for 32-bit Ubuntu. I have my reasons for doing so, but they're too complicated to explain here. Prior to Natty, this worked fine.   Title's pretty explanatory. I have an application(Second Life) that isn't compatible with 64-bit windows 7. It says that it is compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and 7 but only the 32-bit version of 7. I need to know if it's possible for me to download something to make the application compatible with my computer. I've run troubleshooters and ran it as windows compatible XP service pack 2 and tried again with service pack 3.

  I'm using wkhtmltopdf to convert HTML web pages to PDFs. This works perfectly on my 32-bit dev server [unfortunately, I can't ship my machine :-p ]. • Perfomance of 8 bit operations on 64 bit architechture

  I am usually a Python / Database programmer, and I am considering using C for a problem. I have a set of sequences, 8 characters long with 4 possible characters. My problem involves combining sets of these sequences and filtering which sets match a criteria. The combinations of 5 run into billions of rows and takes around an hour to run. So I can represent each sequence as 2 bytes. If I am working on a 64 bit architechture will I gain any advantage by keeping these data structures as 2 bytes when I generate the combinations, or will I be as well storing them as 8 bytes / double ? (64 bit = 8 x 8) If I am on a 64 bit architecture, all registers will be 64 bit, so in terms of operations that shouldn´t be any faster (please correct me if I am wrong). Will I gain anything from the smaller storage requirements - can I fit more combinations in memory, or will they all take up 64 bits anyway? And finally, am I likley to gain anything coding in C. I have a first version, which stores the sequence as a small int in a MySQL database. It then self joins the tabe to itself a number of times in order to generate all the possible combinations. The performance is acceptable, depending on how many combinations are generated. I assume the database must involve some overhead.

Information which is often required on download pages But what is that feature officially called. i.e What's the inverse of saying "I have a 64-bit processor"? I want to say: The ??? of my processor is 64 bit What is the correct term to use for ??? I have looked at a random product on the Intel site and I suspect the correct word for this is "Instruction Set", but I'm not sure.

  I'm about to make a new Linux install, which will be primarily used for programming. I've seen benchmarks showing speed improvement of 64-bit version, however, I have hard time of telling how much these benchmarks translate to improvement in every day usage. And of course there are other aspects to consider. Usage I have in mind: mainly programming Python, with occasional C, C++ and Java; IDEs, which are using Java platforms (Eclipse and IntelliJ); on very rare occasions having to compile for 32-bit platform; not planning to have more than 64GB of RAM anytime soon (and I don't mind using PAE kernels); machine in question has 4GB RAM and Athlon II X2; What are pros and cons of choosing either i386 or x86_64 distro?

• Installing old Loki games on 12.04 64-bit results in no audio

  All, Here's an interesting problem. I followed instructions provided online for installing Loki Games' Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (see http://www.swanson.ukfsn.org/loki/ and http://wtanaka.com/node/7641) and got it installed and patched to the latest version. However, every time I start it regardless whether the pulseaudio is running, I get the following error: LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib/Loki_Compat/ /usr/local/lib/Loki_Compat/ld-linux.so.2 /usr/local/games/Heroes3/heroes3.dynamic ALSA lib conf.c:3314:(snd_config_hooks_call) Cannot open shared library libasound_module_conf_pulse.so ALSA lib pcm.c:2217:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default Couldn't open audio: My first soundcard is HDMI output and my second one is the actual soundcard (HP DM1 running 12.04 64-bit with latest updates). I did set up /etc/asound.conf as follows: asound.conf pcm.!default { type hw card 1 } ctl.!default { type hw card 1 } So, the default soundcard should work ok. Between Shadowgrounds that also stopped working and this it appears a there may be some unfinished business/regressions in 32-bit support on 64-bit systems in 12.04. Any thoughts?

I would like to install python-psyco to improve the performance of one of my scripts, but only python-psyco-doc is available for 64 bit. • Running 32-bit Firefox with sun-jre in 64-bit Ubuntu

  I am trying to run juniper networks connect program to vpn into work and it only works on 32bit sun jre. All the things I have found with google failed so far. I can't use any scripts, like madscientists, as part of the authentication I need to provide some random characters from a grid. So to isolate this 32bit app install to a corner, I downloaded firefox and jre and unpack them to /opt. I run firefox with sudo as Juniper asks for root password. Here is Firefox plugins folder /ot/firefox32/plugins# ls -la total 8 drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Mar 11 00:57 . drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 4096 Mar 10 23:48 .. lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 49 Mar 11 00:57 libnpjp2.so -> /opt/java/32/jdk1.6.0_31/jre/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so Firefox lists sun jre but when check it with "http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp" it either can't detect java or Firefox freezes Any Ideas? • Moving a LAMP set up from 32 bit to 64 bit

  Hello everyone... I have setup an Ubuntu server 10.10 32bit on an old Dell D610 Laptop for testing. I have the latest PHP, MySQL and Apache with Wordpress installed. After the testing is over and once I finish adding material to my wordpress I will build a Ubuntu 10.10 64bit VM on Hyper-V. What I am wondering is , if it's best practice to build everything from scratch (which will take me more time and would like to avoid) or transfer the database and all other settings? If I choose to transfer how and what I need to do? Here's where I'd like some help as I am still an intermediate admin (If I can call it that!) I am looking forward for your help. Thanks!
