  • Exam 70-541 - TS: Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 - Application Development

    Today I passed Microsoft exam 70-541: Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 - Application Development. This exam gives you MCTS certificate. In this posting I will talk about the exam and also give some suggestions about books to read when preparing for exam. About exam This exam was good one I think. The questions were not hard and also not too easy. Just enough to make sure you really know what you do when working with SharePoint. Or at least to make sure you how things work. After couple of years active SharePoint coding this exam needs no additional preparation. The questions covered very different topics like alerts, features, web parts, site definitions, event receivers, workflows, web services and deployments. There are 59 questions in the exam (this information is available in internet) and you have time a little bit more than two hours. It took me about 40 minutes to get questions answered and reviewed. I strongly suggest you to study the parts of WSS 3.0 you don’t know yet and write some code to find out how to use these things through SharePoint API. Good reading For guys with less experience there are some good books to suggest. Take one or both of these books because there are no official study materials or training kits available for this exam. One of my colleagues who is less experienced than me suggested Inside Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 by Ted Pattison and Daniel Larson. He told me that he found this book most useful for him to pass this exam.   When I started with SharePoint Services 3.0 my first book was Developer’s Guide To The Windows SharePoint Services v3 Platform by Todd C. Bleeker. It helped me getting started and later it was my main handbook for some time. Of course, there are many other good books and I suggest you to take what you find. Of course, before buying something I suggest you to discuss with guys who have read the book before. And make sure you mention that you are preparing for exam.   Conclusion If you are experienced SharePoint developer then this exam needs no preparation. Okay, some preparation is always good but if you don’t have time you are still able to pass this exam. If you are not experienced SharePoint developer then study before taking this exam – it is not easy stuff for novices. But if you pass this exam you can proudly say – yes, I know something about SharePoint! :)

  • Impressions and traffic dropped by 70 %

    Can anyone advise why my impressions dropped and traffic as well? I used to have very generic keywords such as: anti aging, anti wrinkle, face cream, eye cream. I thought they were bad and made the keywords more specific: anti wrinkle eye cream, anti aging face cream, etc. Following that change, my impressions and traffic dropped dramatically! I used to get 45+ visitors a day, now I get 15- visitors a day. What is the way forward? I thought what I did to the keywords was good?

    I have a server that runs vsftpd to handle ftp connections. One of my users have a notebook with Total Commander and WinSCP installed. Both ftp clients fail right after the connection is established to the server and it tries to download the directory listing without any particular error message. The weird thing is: the notebook works perfectly ok with other ftp servers. My ftp server also works well with other clients. In fact, this user also has a pc running on the same LAN as the notebook and the pc works well with the ftp server. We use active ftp connection mode. Passive mode works well but is not an option at this point. I would post more technical details but I don't even know what this problem is related to. Anyway, below is the server side tcpdump for the failed connection attempt. There's no further communication between the client and the server after the last line of log.   • Formatting an external HDD stuck at 70%

    My external HDD which is a 250GB WD (powered by USB) seems to have problem! Whenever i try to copy some files, it stuck while copying. I decided to format it. So I used windows tool and performed the format (not quickly) however at nearly 70% it stuck. Then I decided to perform a low level format with lowlevel. Again it stuck at 70%. I endup that the HDD has bad sector. So is there any tool that mark the bad sectors and bypass them? It is not very reasonable to through 250GB because of some bad sectors! P.S: I saw a similar topic but there were no conclusion there either.   • A lots of Apache processes are using my CPU uses always more than 70%

    I am running a plesk panel in 1and1. I have 120 sites running and all are using pligg cms, each site has 600 visitors per day. Please see the details of my server below: HDD-1000GB RAM-16GB Processor-6 Core I always see a lot of apache processes running in my # top view, so the server seems overloaded. If I can reduce the amount apache processes I think the server will be ok. But I don't know why too many apache processes are running. I have also added maxclients and serverlimit 416 in the config /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf But no solution yet. I am researching around more than 7 days but don't get any solution. Please help me to solve the problem. In peak hours my sites are taking too much time to load, but off-peak hour it is ok. Please help me to find out the actual problem.

    Hi we bought a nice computer to use to solve optimization problems. Intel i7-980X@3,33 GHz with 12 GB of Team Group 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM. When we use Gurobi the computer uses all 12 cores at maximum in the beginning of the solve. However after a while (about 8 hrs) it all cores jump between 65 and 85% When I solve the same models on an i7 930 all cores are at a near 100% level even after longer solution times. We first thought that the Hard disk was the bottleneck since Gurobi writes out nodefiles after the memorylimit is used. However since the new computer have 12 GB of RAM we put the memorylimit to 7 GB so the solver only used the RAM and still with the same performance in the processor. Any ideas about the bottleneck? As I said earlier it works at 100% for the first hours or so . Thanks very much for any answers! Our plan was to overclock it but we can't even get it to work at normal speed yet!

    Anybody got any any tutorials that cover these subjects ... the official MS 70-536 book covers this but I don't want to take any chances as I want additional reading materials problem is, its proving difficult to find anything on it. It's a fairly big subject so am hoping somone on here as here as got some good reading materials on that cover these subjects. At this very moment in time, im reading this; Tutorial01 Its not much, but its a good starting point. I'm not a big fan MSDN and the way its structured and layout, I mainly use it for framework related questions like classes and interfaces and etc. WHen it comes to tutorials, i prefer thrid party websites. Lastly, this extra reading which I am asking for is really revision for the 70-536 exam. TIA. Ibrar

  • What's the difference between the 'DES' class and The 'DESCryptoServiceProvider' class?

    All I can make out is that one of them is the BC for all 'DES' algorithms to be derived from and the later is a wrapper for the Cryptographic service provider implementation of the DES algorithm. The reason why I ask is that I am going over .Net Security and the MS official training book simply refers to the DES class but the another official MS book refers to the DESCrypto' class. What's the difference between these two? When would you use either of them? What do I need to know as far as the 70-536 exam is concerned.
