• Contents farms, scrapers sites, aggregators real world examples? [closed]

  Contents farm, scrappers, aggregators real world examples? Could you plz clarify me: efreedom.com is a scraper site, not a content farm? Because it simply copies and pastes contents from stackoverflow. ehow.com and squidoo.com are contents farm? They don't copy and paste contents they just generate fresh new user generated content, but too much and too quickly. expert-exchange.com is NOT a content farm or a scraper site, right?! It's simply that many people (an me too) hates it (they also wrote to Matt Cutts) because it shows up hight in Google providing a useless question with no answer. There are also many sites that act as 'contents aggregators in the form of specialized directories' (let's call them CASD), I don't know how to else define them. Do they have a specific definition? Anyway are these type of CASD contents farms or scrapers sites or what else? Basically these CASD search for all sites of the same type i.e. “restaurants websites”, they copy and paste the contents found in “Restaurant A” and create in their aggregator site a new page called “Restaurant A”, then they do the same for all websites of the same type, thus creating a sort of directory of restaurants. Later on these CASD also sends an email to the owner of “Restaurant A” (usually the email is on the website) with a user and password to let him modify/update its own page on the CASD site. Later on these CASD might ask for money to the owner of “Restaurant A” because they bring him traffic, otherwise they remove its page on the aggregator. Someone could call these simply directories, but I think a directory is different because is something you need to add your site into by filling a form and not something that steals contents from your existing site without a specific acceptance from the site's owner. I also really wonder how Google will sort out all these mess sites packed of contents that show up more and more and everywhere in search results.

• Creating a Custom EventAggregator Class

  One thing I noticed about Microsoft's Composite Application Guidance is that the EventAggregator class is a little inflexible. I say that because getting a particular event from the EventAggregator involves identifying the event by its type like so: _eventAggregator.GetEvent<MyEventType>(); But what if you want different events of the same type? For example, if a developer wants to add a new event to his application of type CompositePresentationEvent<int>, he would have to create a new class that derives from CompositePresentationEvent<int> in a shared library somewhere just to keep it separate from any other events of the same type. In a large application, that's a lot of little two-line classes like the following: public class StuffHappenedEvent : CompositePresentationEvent<int> {} public class OtherStuffHappenedEvent : CompositePresentationEvent<int> {} I don't really like that approach. It almost feels dirty to me, partially because I don't want a million two-line event classes sitting around in my infrastructure dll. What if I designed my own simple event aggregator that identified events by an event ID rather than the event type? For example, I could have an enum such as the following: public enum EventId { StuffHappened, OtherStuffHappened, YetMoreStuffHappened } And my new event aggregator class could use the EventId enum (or a more general object) as a key to identify events in the following way: _eventAggregator.GetEvent<CompositePresentationEvent<int>>(EventId.StuffHappened); _eventAggregator.GetEvent<CompositePresentationEvent<int>>(EventId.OtherStuffHappened); Is this good design for the long run? One thing I noticed is that this reduces type safety. In a large application, is this really as important of a concern as I think it is? Do you think there could be a better alternative design?

• Getting Started with Prism (aka Composite Application Guidance for WPF and Silverlight)

  Overview Prism is a framework from the Microsoft Patterns and Practice team that allow you to create WPF and Silverlight in a modular way. It is especially valuable for larger projects in which a large number of developers can develop in parallel. Prism achieves its goal by supplying several services: · Dependency Injection (DI) and Inversion of control (IoC): By using DI, Prism takes away the responsibility of instantiating and managing the life time of dependency objects from individual components to a container. Prism relies on containers to discover, manage and compose large number of objects. By varying the configuration, the container can also inject mock objects for unit testing. Out of the box, Prism supports Unity and MEF as container although it is possible to use other containers by subclassing the Bootstrapper class. · Modularity and Region: Prism supplies the framework to split application into modules from the application shell. Each module is a library project that contains both UI and code and is responsible to initialize itself when loaded by the shell. Each window can be further divided into regions. A region is a user control with associated model. · Model, view and view-model (MVVM) pattern: Prism promotes the user MVVM. The use of DI container makes it much easier to inject model into view. WPF already has excellent data binding and commanding mechanism. To be productive with Prism, it is important to understand WPF data binding and commanding well. · Event-aggregation: Prism promotes loosely coupled components. Prism discourages for components from different modules to communicate each other, thus leading to dependency. Instead, Prism supplies an event-aggregation mechanism that allows components to publish and subscribe events without knowing each other. Architecture In the following, I will go into a little more detail on the services provided by Prism. Bootstrapper In a typical WPF application, application start-up is controls by App.xaml and its code behind. The main window of the application is typically specified in the App.xaml file. In a Prism application, we start a bootstrapper in the App class and delegate the duty of main window to the bootstrapper. The bootstrapper will start a dependency-injection container so all future object instantiations are managed by the container. Out of box, Prism provides the UnityBootstrapper and MefUnityBootstrapper abstract classes. All application needs to either provide a concrete implementation of one of these bootstrappers, or alternatively, subclass the Bootstrapper class with another DI container. A concrete bootstrapper class must implement the CreateShell method. Its responsibility is to resolve and create the Shell object through the DI container to serve as the main window for the application. The other important method to override is ConfigureModuleCatalog. The bootstrapper can register modules for the application. In a more advance scenario, an application does not have to know all its modules at compile time. Modules can be discovered at run time. Readers to refer to one of the Open Modularity Quick Starts for more information. Modules Once modules are registered with or discovered by Prism, they are instantiated by the DI container and their Initialize method is called. The DI container can inject into a module a region registry that implements IRegionViewRegistry interface. The module, in its Initialize method, can then call RegisterViewWithRegion method of the registry to register its regions. Regions Regions, once registered, are managed by the RegionManager. The shell can then load regions either through the RegionManager.RegionName attached property or dynamically through code. When a view is created by the region manager, the DI container can inject view model and other services into the view. The view then has a reference to the view model through which it can interact with backend services. Service locator Although it is possible to inject services into dependent classes through a DI container, an alternative way is to use the ServiceLocator to retrieve a service on demard. Prism supplies a service locator implementation and it is possible to get an instance of the service by calling: ServiceLocator.Current.GetInstance<IServiceType>() Event aggregator Prism supplies an IEventAggregator interface and implementation that can be injected into any class that needs to communicate with each other in a loosely-coupled fashion. The event aggregator uses a publisher/subscriber model. A class can publishes an event by calling eventAggregator.GetEvent<EventType>().Publish(parameter) to raise an event. Other classes can subscribe the event by calling eventAggregator.GetEvent<EventType>().Subscribe(EventHandler, other options). Getting started The easiest way to get started with Prism is to go through the Prism Hands-On labs and look at the Hello World QuickStart. The Hello World QuickStart shows how bootstrapper, modules and region works. Next, I would recommend you to look at the Stock Trader Reference Implementation. It is a more in depth example that resemble we want to set up an application. Several other QuickStarts cover individual Prism services. Some scenarios, such as dynamic module discovery, are more advanced. Apart from the official prism document, you can get an overview by reading Glen Block’s MSDN Magazine article. I have found the best free training material is from the Boise Code Camp. To be effective with Prism, it is important to understands key concepts of WPF well first, such as the DependencyProperty system, data binding, resource, theme and ICommand. It is also important to know your DI container of choice well. I will try to explorer these subjects in depth in the future. Testimony Recently, I worked on a desktop WPF application using Prism. I had a wonderful experience with Prism. The Prism is flexible enough even in the presence of third party controls such as Telerik WPF controls. We have never encountered any significant obstacle.

• Silverlight Cream Monday WP7 App Review # 2

  Today's Review (alphabetic order): GooNews, Grocery Shopping List, Need for Speed, SurfCube, and United Nations News. I'm a day late if these are going to be 'Monday' posts, but there are lots of apps, lots of goodness, and lots of email, so I might try to do 2 a week, we'll see. So once again I've got a small review of 5 apps that are either on my phone or have been. Disclaimers at the end. In this Issue:   GooNews is a very cool app from Shawn Wildermuth (AgiliTrain). I don't know if he uses this as a demo during his instruction, but it definitely serves a purpose... wanna pick up the top news items from Google on a never-ending basis? ... this is it. You can add your own keyword searches, and send stories to InstaPaper or share via email. I like this because it brings me the news quickly and updated, and works great. GooNews is by AgiliTrain and is Free This was a request by the author, and actually surprised me. I'm a big one for lists, but I would have just done a OneNote list to SkyDrive and to my phone. This app is a lot more than that, but will take you some setup to make it be 'yours'. For obvious reasons, there are no unit prices on things, so you have to set that up to get some idea of the cost of what you're shopping for. But if you do that, you'll get a nice total. Lots of thought went into the various categories and you can add your own. There's a bit of animation on the category selection that's nice. He seems to have covered all the bases necessary to use this, even shopping 'plans' that can be saved, and emailing of lists. As I said, I'm more of a raw list person, but if you take the time to set this up, it should work very nicely for you. Grocery Shopping List is by Grocery Shopper and is $0.99 ($1.99 after Feb 1) with a free trial. This was my 2nd commercial game I bought, and the one I've played the most. I ran the trial, thought it worked great, and bought it. I've had a lot of fun with this... there's no gas pedal.. your foot is in the carbeurator from the GO!, and unless you wanna tap the screen and brake like a little girl, just hang onto the steering wheel (the phone), and guide your way through. Hours of fun and challenges here. I like this because it's got some challenge to it, and the cars seem to be very realistic in their reactions. Need for Speed Undercover is by Electronic Arts is $4.99 and has a free trial. SurfCube Browser is another app by the folks that did the GuitarTuner I reviewed on Monday. You have to see SurfCube to believe it. You've probably seen the YouTube video, if not check SilverlightCream number 1017. The app works very solid, and just as the video demonstrates. I downloaded and tried this, and it immediately did 2 things: bought it, and pinned it to my start page. I like this because it's fun to work with, and it works great as a browser. I'm about *this* close to replacing the IE tile on my front page with SurfCube. SurfCube Browser is by Kinabalu Innovation Limited and is $1.99 and has a free trial. Coming in with another News app is United Nations News by Justin Angel. This is definitely a news aggregator for 'grown ups'... news, photos, videos, and radio broadcsts from the international community all in one very slick app. This is an amazingly well thought-out and complete app. Even better yet, Justin has the code on CodePlex. A very well-done International news aggregator. United Nations News is by Justin Angel and is Free. A few disclaimers: Feel free to write me about your app and tell me about it. While it would be very cool to receive a whole bunch of xap files to review, at this point, for technical reasons, I'm unable to side-load my device. Since I plan on only doing this one day a week (twice if I find time), and only 5, I may never get caught up, so if you send me some info, be patient. Re: games ... remember I'm old... I'm from the era of Colossal Cave and Zork. Duke-Nukem 2D and Captain Comic were awesome. I don't own an XBOX or any other game system, so take game reviews from my perspective -- who knows, it may be refreshing :) I won't pay for an app or game just to try it. If you expect me to test-drive your app, it's going to have to have a Free Trial. I'm still playing with the format, comments are welcome. • Choosing a subject to create a site for

  For 6 years I'm working as web developer and I would like to finally create my own site. I thought I have everything needed: programming and administration skills, found a good designer, own servers and understanding how to operate site. But I've missed very important (or the most important) point: how do I find a subject for my site? My hobby and my work are the same: IT, but I don't want to create just another tech blog or news aggregator, I want something different. First I thought things like Google Trends or Google top 1000 could help, but I've got lost in thousands of options I can't see them all (I actually can, but it'll take at least a couple of month). So my question is: how did you start? Where did you get the idea?

• How to find out what Hackathons are coming up near me? [closed]

  I just went to my first hackathon (London GreenHackathon) and I want to go to lots more. Specifically, hackathons that have a theme of helping people or making the world a better place in some way. I know about Random Hacks of Kindness and a couple of others but is there some central aggregator that will help me find out about hackathons? Also, if anyone else can suggest specific hackathon initiatives I should check out that would be handy too. I'm in London but obviously for other people reading this question other locations will be of interest.

  It's been years since I've been active in the community, but I'm back with a newly redesigned wwwCoder.com. The site was taken over by spammers, and was essientially a ghost town, but I reworked it to bring a technology topics aggregator. • Is there a way to make money from indie downloadable games? [closed]

  It appears that there are ways to make money with flash games through portal and aggregator sites and embedded ads. But I do my programming in C and C++. I've started a prototype which relies on a few existing C++ SDK's. The game would have to be downloadable. Is this just a labor of love, or are there any ways to make money from this type of game? Does anyone pay for shareware anymore? What other options are there?

• Why does Samba/CIFS suck so badly. [closed]

  Seriously, machines refusing to save data because files THEY HAVE OPEN are locked BY THEMSELVES. Getting 200+ connections simultaneously takes it out despite a plethora of available disk and network bandwidth. You can't turn off CUPS you have to COMPILE WITHOUT IT. DFS support is completely broken and pretty much useless in the current state (as in DFS for load balancing, not replication). We should just move to NFS and find a DFS like namespace aggregator.

• Standard Practice for Continuous Integration of Maven Multi-module projects

  I checked around, and couldn't find a good answer to this: We have a multi-module Maven project which we want to continuously integrate. We thought of two strategies for handling this: Have our continuous integration server (TeamCity, in this case, but I've used others before and they seem to have the same issue) point to the aggregator POM file, and just build everything Have our continuous integration server point at each individual module Is there a standard, preferred practice for this? I've checked Stack Overflow, Google, the Continuous Integration book, and did not find anything, but maybe I missed it.

• Turn Windows Event Logs EVT files into Syslog to send to LogLogic

  I have a a requirement to analyze 13gb of Windows logs by feeding it into a LogLogic Log aggregator. LogLogic is essentially Linux Syslog server, it can take a Syslog (Tcp/udp 514) feed or log on to a windows share and pull a flat file log. The only problem is that it cannot read the binary .EVT files from Windows Event logs. Normally, I would use Lasso to end the logs to a loglogic as syslog, but it has to read the logs from WMI and uses the DLLs on the log source host to format them and transmit them as syslog in the formatting that LogLogic expects. Does anyone know: A. Is there some kind of product out there to do this? or - B. Is there some way to import them into a Windows event veiwer in a way that lasso (or snare for that matter) will see them as actual real event logs on that host and forward them to the loglogic device as syslog.

• IIS FTP - Users Last Logon

  How would you determine the last FTP logon time/date for a bunch of local user accounts on a DMZ (standalone/workgroup) server running IIS FTP? I know I could use a log aggregator and sift through it that way, but this server has been operational for approximately 8 years and I don't fancy that vector. I have also tried the scripting route, but this is of no use because the users have never actually logged onto the machine, so there's no profile (rendering the WMI classes *WIN32_UserAccount* and *WIN32_UserProfile* useless). They're just used to access the FTP service. Thanks in advance

  Hi, I need a good podcast aggregator. I was using Juice 2.2, but that will not work on my new pc which is running Windows 7 (64 bit). Could anyone recommend one please ? I need the following functionality : 1- Subscribe to podcasts (mp3's from radio shows) using rss 2- Have OPML support so I can load up my old subscriptions easily 3- That runs quietly in the backgrond and looks after itself 4- That deletes old episodes automatically after a set time 5- Isn't just designed for an IPOD (I use a simple generic mp3 player to listen). • Opera 11 - prevent panels/tabs opening when examining RSS feeds

  I've reviewed the suggested questions, based on my title, so apologies if I'm going over old ground. Opera 11 recently came out. Whilst I use it as my RSS aggregator, I don't use it for any other messaging purposes. So I'm annoyed with, whenever I open Feeds-Read Feeds, I suddenly get the panels side menu, and the Mail panel opened automatically. This is new behaviour from the 10.x series, and I can't seem to find an option to turn it off. When I go to "Read Feeds", I just want the feeds window to open. That's it. Any ideas?
