  • Rails 3 query in multiple date ranges

    - by NeoRiddle
    Suppose we have some date ranges, for example: ranges = [ [(12.months.ago)..(8.months.ago)], [(7.months.ago)..(6.months.ago)], [(5.months.ago)..(4.months.ago)], [(3.months.ago)..(2.months.ago)], [(1.month.ago)..(15.days.ago)] ] and a Post model with :created_at attribute. I want to find posts where created_at value is in this range, so the goal is to create a query like: SELECT * FROM posts WHERE created_at BETWEEN '2011-04-06' AND '2011-08-06' OR BETWEEN '2011-09-06' AND '2011-10-06' OR BETWEEN '2011-11-06' AND '2011-12-06' OR BETWEEN '2012-01-06' AND '2012-02-06' OR BETWEEN '2012-02-06' AND '2012-03-23'; If you have only one range like this: range = (12.months.ago)..(8.months.ago) we can do this query: Post.where(:created_at => range) and query should be: SELECT * FROM posts WHERE created_at BETWEEN '2011-04-06' AND '2011-08-06'; Is there a way to make this query using a notation like this Post.where(:created_at => range)? And what is the correct way to build this query? Thank you

  • You are or will be a laid off programmer - what do you do a year ago, right now, tomorrow, and next week?

    - by Adam Davis
    Many programmers, software engineers, and other technology professionals are out of work, facing layoffs, or are unprepared for layoffs though they feel secure right now. What should every programmer do right now (even if secure in their current job) to prepare them for layoffs down the road? If your boss came to your cubicle while you read this and laid you off: What would you do immediately after? What would you do tomorrow? What would you do next week? It obvious that one should always have an up to date resume, always get recommendations from people when they see you at your best (not when you're looking for a new job), etc. What are the things, step by step, that every programmer should do (or should consider doing) long before they are laid off, when they're laid off, and shortly after being laid off? This is a question with many possible facets. While I want to encourage discussion to center around programming career based answers, please reconsider before downvoting someone because they're thinking in terms of how they're going to prevent going into debt. Bonus catch-22 type question: You can study a new language or technology while out of work, but most places want you to have more than 1-2 months experience in a working environment, not just from a learning exercise. Is it worthwhile to place a priority on new (ideally in demand) skills, or should you instead hone existing skills?

  • Can I replace a folder with the files it had in it a few hours ago with Time Machine?

    - by 1.21 gigawatts
    I messed up a folder (or the files in that folder) and I want to restore them from a few hours ago. I tried to use Time-Machine to "restore" and it prompts me with where to restore to. I want to restore all files in that directory to the state they were in before. How do I do this? Don't tell me I have to manually replace each file. Edit: It looks like I can restore a folder. The operation can’t be completed because the item “eclipse” is in use.

  • I just got a virus 6 mins ago, how? Situation.

    - by acidzombie24
    -Edit- for the people who say it isn't a virus. Norton does detect it as a virus, an icon was placed on my system tray and rkpg.exe is in my C: which was placed 6 min ago around the time my computer rebooted on its own causing me to lose data :@. Situation I on Windows XP, behind a Linksys router, I don't have DMZ on so nothing should be connecting to me. I had Firefox, MSN and Visual Studio opened. With C# I programmed a quick application to scan some pages with Internet Explorer. The site it was scanning was deviantART (which is pretty trustworthy), I doubt any banners there would hold a virus. I went to a suspicious site called freetxt.com but that was on Firefox and it didn't load the site. With an extra check I ping it and got this message "Ping request could not find host freetxt.com." The virus seems to be called braviax. Right now it brought up a message saying my computer may be infected? How on earth did it get in? I don't have uTorrent installed or any torrent or p2p applications. Nothing is installed on my computer that I haven't installed before and I know the exact time it installed because I see rkpg.exe on my C drive and my computer restarted on its own around the same time. For the previous 30 minutes actually the previous hour all I did was talk on MSN, not click any links (I went to freetxt on my own) and had that Internet Explorer thing running (which I programmed). How did it get in? I really doubt it came from a banner on deviantART and installed when I loaded the page with the webbrowser-control so something else may have happened? Is there any system defaults I should turn off? I have remote assistance off but even if it was on I shouldn't be infected due to the router not forwarding any ports?

  • Sort string array by analysing date details in those strings

    - by Jason Evans
    I have a requirement for the project I'm working on right now which is proving a bit tricky for me. Basically I have to sort an array of items based on the Text property of those items: Here are my items: var answers = [], answer1 = { Id: 1, Text: '3-4 weeks ago' }, answer2 = { Id: 2, Text: '1-2 weeks ago' }, answer3 = { Id: 3, Text: '7-8 weeks ago' }, answer4 = { Id: 4, Text: '5-6 weeks ago' }, answer5 = { Id: 5, Text: '1-2 days ago' }, answer6 = { Id: 6, Text: 'More than 1 month ago' }; answers.push(answer1); answers.push(answer2); answers.push(answer3); answers.push(answer4); answers.push(answer5); answers.push(answer6); I need to analyse the Text property of each item so that, after the sorting, the array looks like this: answers[0] = { Id: 6, Text: 'More than 1 month ago' } answers[1] = { Id: 3, Text: '7-8 weeks ago' } answers[2] = { Id: 4, Text: '5-6 weeks ago' } answers[3] = { Id: 1, Text: '3-4 weeks ago' } answers[4] = { Id: 2, Text: '1-2 weeks ago' } answers[5] = { Id: 5, Text: '1-2 days ago' } The logic is that, the furthest away the date, the more high priority it is, so it should appear first in the array. So "1-2 days" is less of a priority then "7-8 weeks". So the logic is that, I need to extract the number values, and then the units (e.g. days, weeks) and somehow sort the array based on those details. Quite honestly I'm finding it very difficult to come up with a solution, and I'd appreciate any help.

  • I just got a linode VPS a week ago and I've been flagged for SSH scanning...

    - by meder
    I got a 32-bit Debian VPS from http://linode.com and I really haven't done any sort of advanced configuration for securing it ( port 22; password enabled ). It seems somehow there is ssh scanning going on from my IP, I'm being flagged as this is against the TOS. I've been SSHing only from my home Comcast ISP which I run Linux on. Is this a common thing when getting a new vps? Are there any standard security configuration tips? I'm quite confused as to how my machine has been accused of this ssh scanning.

  • List/remove files, with filenames containing string that's "more than a month ago"?

    - by Martin Tóth
    I store some data in files which follow this naming convention: /interesting/data/filename-YYYY-MM-DD-HH-MM How do I look for the ones with date in file name < now - 1 month and delete them? Files may have changed since they were created, so searching according to last modification date is not good. What I'm doing now, is filter-ing them in python: prefix = '/interesting/data/filename-' import commands names = commands.getoutput('ls {0}*'.format(prefix)).splitlines() from datetime import datetime, timedelta all_files = map(lambda name: { 'name': name, 'date': datetime.strptime(name, '{0}%Y-%m-%d-%H-%M'.format(prefix)) }, names) month = datetime.now() - timedelta(days = 30) to_delete = filter(lambda item: item['date'] < month, all_files) import os map(os.remove, to_delete) Is there a (oneliner) bash solution for this?

  • Fuzzy Date algorithm in Objective-C

    - by Brock Woolf
    I would like to write a fuzzy date method for calculating dates in Objective-C for iPhone. There is a popular explanation here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11/how-do-i-calculate-relative-time However it contains missing arguments. How could this be used in Objective-C?. Thanks. const int SECOND = 1; const int MINUTE = 60 * SECOND; const int HOUR = 60 * MINUTE; const int DAY = 24 * HOUR; const int MONTH = 30 * DAY; if (delta < 1 * MINUTE) { return ts.Seconds == 1 ? "one second ago" : ts.Seconds + " seconds ago"; } if (delta < 2 * MINUTE) { return "a minute ago"; } if (delta < 45 * MINUTE) { return ts.Minutes + " minutes ago"; } if (delta < 90 * MINUTE) { return "an hour ago"; } if (delta < 24 * HOUR) { return ts.Hours + " hours ago"; } if (delta < 48 * HOUR) { return "yesterday"; } if (delta < 30 * DAY) { return ts.Days + " days ago"; } if (delta < 12 * MONTH) { int months = Convert.ToInt32(Math.Floor((double)ts.Days / 30)); return months <= 1 ? "one month ago" : months + " months ago"; } else { int years = Convert.ToInt32(Math.Floor((double)ts.Days / 365)); return years <= 1 ? "one year ago" : years + " years ago"; }

  • Update time descriptions every minute using jquery/javascript

    - by Amy Neville
    I have created the following code to update the text contents of all spans like this every minute. There are numerous of these spans on the page which all need to be updated every minute: <span unix="1372263005" class="time_ago">4 minutes ago</span> The code is as follows: window.setInterval(function(){ var unix = $(".time_ago").text(); var now = new Date().getTime(); var amount = 0; var difference = 0; difference = now - parseInt(unix); if (difference < 60) { $(".time_ago").text('<span unix="' + unix + '" class="time_ago">a few seconds ago</span>'); } else if (difference < 120) { $(".time_ago").text('<span unix="' + unix + '" class="time_ago">a minute ago</span>'); } else if (difference < 3600) { amount = floor(difference / 60); $(".time_ago").text('<span unix="' + unix + '" class="time_ago">' + amount + ' minutes ago</span>'); } else if (difference < 7200) { $(".time_ago").text('<span unix="' + unix + '" class="time_ago">an hour ago</span>'); } else if (difference < 86400) { amount = floor(difference / 3600); $(".time_ago").text('<span unix="' + unix + '" class="time_ago">' + amount + ' hours ago</span>'); } else if (difference < 172800) { $(".time_ago").text('<span unix="' + unix + '" class="time_ago">a day ago</span>'); } else if (difference < 2635200) { amount = floor(difference / 86400); $(".time_ago").text('<span unix="' + unix + '" class="time_ago">' + amount + ' days ago</span>'); } else if (difference < 5270400) { $(".time_ago").text('<span unix="' + unix + '" class="time_ago">a month ago</span>'); } else if (difference < 31622400) { amount = floor(difference / 2635200); $(".time_ago").text('<span unix="' + unix + '" class="time_ago">' + amount + ' months ago</span>'); } else if (difference < 63244800) { $(".time_ago").text('<span unix="' + unix + '" class="time_ago">a year ago</span>'); } else (difference >= 63244800) { amount = floor(difference / 31622400); $(".time_ago").text('<span unix="' + unix + '" class="time_ago">' + amount + ' years ago</span>'); } return false; }, 60); EDIT) Ok, now I have made some changes on your advice but it's changing the span texts to 43351 years. Any ideas why it is doing that?

  • Root directory permissions on Mac OS X 10.6?

    - by Agos
    Hi, I was wondering if it's normal that the root directory / should be owned by “root”. I get asked for my password every time I want to do something there (e.g. save a file, create a directory) and I don't remember this happening before (though this may just be my faulty memory). Here's the relevant terminal output: MacBook:~ ago$ ls -lah / total 37311 drwxr-xr-x@ 35 root staff 1,2K 22 Mar 12:34 . drwxr-xr-x@ 35 root staff 1,2K 22 Mar 12:34 .. -rw-rw-r--@ 1 root admin 21K 22 Mar 10:21 .DS_Store drwx------ 3 root admin 102B 28 Feb 2008 .Spotlight-V100 d-wx-wx-wt 2 root admin 68B 31 Ago 2009 .Trashes -rw-r--r--@ 1 ago 501 45K 23 Gen 2008 .VolumeIcon.icns srwxrwxrwx 1 root staff 0B 22 Mar 12:34 .dbfseventsd ---------- 1 root admin 0B 23 Giu 2009 .file drwx------ 27 root admin 918B 22 Mar 10:55 .fseventsd -rw-r--r--@ 1 ago admin 59B 30 Ott 2007 .hidden -rw------- 1 root wheel 320K 30 Nov 11:42 .hotfiles.btree drwxr-xr-x@ 2 root wheel 68B 18 Mag 2009 .vol drwxrwxr-x+ 276 root admin 9,2K 19 Mar 18:28 Applications drwxrwxr-x@ 21 root admin 714B 14 Nov 12:01 Developer drwxrwxr-t+ 74 root admin 2,5K 18 Dic 22:14 Library drwxr-xr-x@ 2 root wheel 68B 23 Giu 2009 Network drwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136B 13 Nov 17:49 System drwxr-xr-x 6 root admin 204B 31 Ago 2009 Users drwxrwxrwt@ 4 root admin 136B 22 Mar 12:35 Volumes drwxr-xr-x@ 39 root wheel 1,3K 13 Nov 17:44 bin drwxrwxr-t@ 2 root admin 68B 23 Giu 2009 cores dr-xr-xr-x 3 root wheel 5,1K 17 Mar 11:29 dev lrwxr-xr-x@ 1 root wheel 11B 31 Ago 2009 etc -> private/etc dr-xr-xr-x 2 root wheel 1B 17 Mar 11:30 home drwxrwxrwt@ 3 root wheel 102B 31 Ago 2009 lost+found -rw-r--r--@ 1 root wheel 18M 3 Nov 19:40 mach_kernel dr-xr-xr-x 2 root wheel 1B 17 Mar 11:30 net drwxr-xr-x@ 3 root admin 102B 24 Nov 2007 opt drwxr-xr-x@ 6 root wheel 204B 31 Ago 2009 private drwxr-xr-x@ 64 root wheel 2,1K 13 Nov 17:44 sbin lrwxr-xr-x@ 1 root wheel 11B 31 Ago 2009 tmp -> private/tmp drwxr-xr-x@ 17 root wheel 578B 12 Set 2009 usr lrwxr-xr-x@ 1 root wheel 11B 31 Ago 2009 var -> private/var Are these ownerships / permissions ok?   • How to turn off project mirroring from SourcForge to launchpad?

    - by C.W.Holeman II
    I have project Emle in Launchpad. I set it to import from emle.svn.sourceforge.net. My intention was to do a single import of the files from SourceForge. EmleBranches2.0 shows that what I actually did was set it to mirror the SourceForge project. Import details Import Status: Reviewed This branch is an import of the Subversion branch from https://emle.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/emle/trunk. The next import is scheduled to run in 35 minutes. Last successful import was 5 hours ago. • Why can't I connect to a Cisco wireless access point?

    - by spinlock
    I'm running a Lucid Netbook Remix on my Dell Inspiron 600m and I was not able to connect to the wireless network at the Hacker Dojo in Mountain View yesterday. There were plenty of other people on the network - MS, Mac, and Linux boxes - but my laptop would never get an ip address. I can connect to my home network, which is open, and I've never had a problem connecting at the coffee shop, which uses WPA. The Hacker Dojo is running WPA and we checked the password a number of times but got no love. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Hello, I had inserted two jQuery tabs on my site. One div container had the id - tabs and another had the id tabs-for-views. Both of them were working fine till sometime ago, until i made some changes. I don't remember what the exact changes were.. Right now, the first tab uses the jQuery UI theme I am using. As in, I can see the tab navigation and content panels - but on clicking the tabs nothing happens. But the second (tabs-for-views) is not even converted to proper tabs format. I am using the Drupal CMS for this site. the tabs can be found on this page: http://betterclassofleaders.co.cc/whackk/ this is the jquery ui css file i am using: (insert first link)sites/default/themes/whack_custom/jquery-ui-1.7.2.custom.css

  • Why has my computer started to make noises when I turn it on after I put it into sleep mode for the first time a week ago?

    - by Acid2
    I would usually have my pc on all day and fully shut it down at night time before I went to bed. I decided to put it into sleep mode instead the other day and everything was fine but when I woke it from sleep, I was presented with the blue screen of death and it started with some weird noise that sounded like some spinning part was off balance or possibly hitting something periodically. Sounds like it could be a fan or maybe the HDD. I'm not sure why sleep mode would mess up the hardware. Anyway, now sometimes, randomly, when I turn my computer on from a previous shut down, I still get to hear the noise but the start-up is normal. Sometimes I don't hear anything for the entire duration while I have it on and sometimes it goes away after a few minutes and sometimes it doesn't and I have to restart, like it isn't going away right now. I can hear the noise as I type this. Anyone got possible solutions? I don't want to open the system and mess up other stuff. I'm also not sure if I should take it somewhere to have it fixed - it might not make the noise then and work like normal and nothing would seem like needing to be fixed. Add: I'm running Windows 7, if that's of any relevance.
