• Beat detection, weird detection

  I made this soundanalyzer class to detect beats in songs : // put it on pastebin for the big size, will put it here if people rather want that. pastebin.com/8PdgZPP3 but for some reason its only detecting beats from 637 sec to around 641(sec) and I have no idea why. I know the beats are being inserted from multiple bands since I am finding duplicates and it seems as its assigning a beat to each instant energy value in between those values. Its modeled after this : http://www.flipcode.com/misc/BeatDetectionAlgorithms.pdf So why won't the beats properly register ?

• 'schema' design for a social network

  I'm working on a proof of concept app for a twitter style social network with about 500k users. I'm unsure of how best to design the 'schema' should I embed a user's subscriptions or have a separate 'subscriptions' collection and use db references? If I embed, I still have to perform a query to get all of a user's followers. e.g. Given the following user: { "username" : "alan", "photo": "123.jpg", "subscriptions" : [ {"username" : "john", "status" : "accepted"}, {"username" : "paul", "status" : "pending"} ] } to find all of alan's subscribers, I'd have to run something like this: db.users.find({'subscriptions.username' : 'alan'}); from a performance point of view, is that any worse or better than having a separate subscriptions collection? also, when displaying a list of subscriptions/subscribers, I am currently having problems with n+1 because the subscription document tells me the username of the target user but not other attributes I may need such as the profile photo. Are there any recommended practices for such situations? thanks Alan

Each Proxy has different Login style, as below : Server-1 : nt-domain\alan Server-2 : [email protected] Logon in IE, Firefox and my Phonecell via Wifi all are fine. But, a problem appears when we run a java application J2SE Ver 4, 5 and 6, where it needs internet authentication. Logon to Server-2 is OK, but FAIL for Server-2 (style : [email protected]).   Hi there, I'm stuck with this for several hours now and cycled through a wealth of different tools to get the job done. Without success. It would be fantastic, if someone could help me out with this. Here is the problem: I have a very large CSV file (400mb+) that is not formatted correctly. Right now it looks something like this: Alan Smithee ist ein Anagramm von „The [...] „Alan Smythee“, und „Adam Smithee“." ,Alan Smithee Die Aussagenlogik ist der Bereich der Logik, der sich mit [...] ihrer Teilaussagen bestimmen. ,Aussagenlogik As you can probably see the words ",Alan Smithee" and ",Aussagenlogik" should actually be on the same line as the foregoing sentence. Then it would look something like this: Alan Smithee ist ein Anagramm von „The Smitheeeee [...] „Alan Smythee“, und „Adam Smithee“.,Alan Smithee Die Aussagenlogik ist der Bereich der Logik, der sich mit [...] ihrer Teilaussagen bestimmen.,Aussagenlogik Please note that the end of the sentence can contain quotes or not. In the end they should be replaced too. Here is what I came up with so far: sed -n '1h;1!H;${;g;s/\."?.*,//g;p;}' out.csv > out1.csv This should actually get the job done of matching the expression over multiple lines. Unfortunately it doesn't :) The expression is looking for the dot at the end of the sentence and the optional quotes plus a newline character that I'm trying to match with .*. Help much appreciated. And it doesn't really matter what tool gets the job done (awk, perl, sed, tr, etc.). Thanks, Chris

• How to Program AWS Spot Instances to Strategically Bid So the Auction is Never Lost Until a Competitor Beats the Maximum I'm Willing to Pay?

  I believe I'm in the right section of stack exchange to ask this. If not, let me know. I only use Amazon Web Services for temporary type hosting services, so the spot instances are quite valuable to me. I would also just make an instance and start and stop it - but - that doesn't necessarily fit my bootstrapped budget sadly. Anyways, it really kills me when someone outbids me on a spot instance I have (I tend to go for the larger ones which there are fewer of available) and I get randomly kicked off. I know or at least I believe there is a way to program in something somehow to dynamically change your bidding price to beat a potential competitor's if their's is higher than yours. Now, I previously believed Amazon would just charge me for the highest price right above the next lowest competitor automatically (eliminating the need for this) - so if I bid too high, then I only pay what I would of needed to in order to win and keep the auction. Essentially, I thought my bid price was my max bid price. Apparently, according to my bills and several experiments I've done - this is not the case. They charge me for whatever I bid even when I know there is no one else around to counter bid me. I needed to clarify that, but let me get back to the main point: Let's say I'm bidding $0.50, competitor comes in and bids 0.55 cents. I get kicked off. I want to have it to where I'd set a maximum I'm willing to pay (let's say $1.00 here), and then when competitor comes in and tries to bid $.55, my bid is dynamically adjusted to beat his at $0.56 up until he breaks my $1.00 threshold. I've been reading the guides and although they are more or less straightforward, I feel like they leave a few holes in them that end up confusing me. Like, for instance, where do I input said command or when do I do it? Maybe I'm just tech illiterate and need help deciphering these guides. • How can I rank teams based off of head to head wins/losses

  I'm trying to write an algorithm (specifically in Ruby) that will rank teams based on their record against each other. If a team A and team B have won the same amount of games against each other, then it goes down to point differentials. Here's an example: A beat B two times B beats C one time A beats D three times C bests D two times D beats C one time B beats A one time Which sort of reduces to A[B] = 2 B[C] = 1 A[D] = 3 C[D] = 2 D[C] = 1 B[A] = 1 Which sort of reduces to A[B] = 1 B[C] = 1 A[D] = 3 C[D] = 1 D[C] = -1 B[A] = -1 Which is about how far I've got I think the results of this specific algorithm would be: A, B, C, D But I'm stuck on how to transition from my nested hash-like structure to the results. My psuedo-code is as follows (I can post my ruby code too if someone wants): For each game(g): hash[g.winner][g.loser] += 1 That leaves hash as the first reduction above hash2 = clone of hash For each key(winner), value(losers hash) in hash: For each key(loser), value(losses against winner): hash2[loser][winner] -= losses Which leaves hash2 as the second reduction Feel free to as me question or edit this to be more clear, I'm not sure of how to put it in a very eloquent way. • Handling deleted users - separate or same table?

  The scenario is that I've got an expanding set of users, and as time goes by, users will cancel their accounts which we currently mark as 'deleted' (with a flag) in the same table. If users with the same email address (that's how users log in) wish to create a new account, they can signup again, but a NEW account is created. (We have unique ids for every account, so email addresses can be duplicated amongst live and deleted ones). What I've noticed is that all across our system, in the normal course of things we constantly query the users table checking the user is not deleted, whereas what I'm thinking is that we dont need to do that at all...! [Clarification1: by 'constantly querying', I meant that we have queries which are like: '... FROM users WHERE isdeleted="0" AND ...'. For example, we may need to fetch all users registered for all meetings on a particular date, so in THAT query, we also have FROM users WHERE isdeleted="0" - does this make my point clearer?] (1) continue keeping deleted users in the 'main' users table (2) keep deleted users in a separate table (mostly required for historical book-keeping) What are the pros and cons of either approach?

• How Easy is it to Code In-Built Videos?

  First time poster so please don't bite my head off. Basically, I'm having a site built for me and I don't really know anything about coding but I'm not too sure if I trust my web developer. • Rails: periodically use HEAD to check for page changes

  I have a Rails app implementing a game, so it's expected that a player will leave a browser open at the game page. When player Alan takes an action himself, I use AJAX requests to update the game page Alan is viewing to reflect the new state. However, when another player (Bob) takes an action, I don't have (or want) a mechanism to push the change to Alan's view. I would like Alan's page to periodically poll the Rails server to find if there have been any changes since last reload, and to reload the page (either via a whole-page GET or an AJAX call) if not. In order to play nicely with caches and proxies, I'd like to do this by issuing a periodic HTTP HEAD request, get Rails to work out the timestamp of the last change (trivially available from my DB) and respond with that in the Last-Modified header; then have the client-side act on that timestamp. How can I go about doing this?

• Matte or non-widescreen laptop? Do they exist?

  Does anyone know of any matte-screen laptops being sold now (15.6 or 17") in the UK? All I can find is the Dell Vostro 3500/3700 range, but there is a premium of around £200 over the price of their Inspiron range (for the 17" model), and I find it hard justifying the extra cost just to have a matte screen. I do not like glossy screens, but it seems the laptop industry has gone the way of "glossy is better - let's get rid of matte". I have read and heard from other developers that as long as there are no strong light sources to reflect off the screen, one can soon get used to a glossy screen, but I am yet to be convinced. I would also be interested if anyone knows of any non 16:9 screen laptops. I find this ratio too wide and not high-enough for the work I do. 16:10 or lower would be better. Any opinions would be appreciated. Alan

• Does laser printer use toner when switched on/off?

  I have recently purchased a HP LaserJet M175nw laser printer which goes into sleep-mode after 10 minutes of non-use. I know sleep-mode uses a very small amount of power, but the flashing light on the control panel is driving me nuts! I know I can turn-off the printer via. the on/off button, but when it is turned-on manually, there is some whirring sound which I guess might be the machine warming-up. My question is... Is any toner used during this warm-up (or cleaning) cycle? Am I better-off keeping the printer in sleep mode, or is it ok to turn off manually? TIA Alan

• Excluding certain file types in wget

  I have been using wget for a while now to mirror files from an ftp server to a local folder. My wget command is as follows: wget -mirror -w 1 -p -nH -P /var/www/ ftp://my-ftp-server However, I just noticed that it is copying over a .listing file for every folder that it visits. So, even if nothing has been changed on the ftp server, a .listing file will always be copied. My understanding is that the .listing file is created when wget opens the ftp session. Is there a way to avoid this? I've tried the -R option (e.g. -R .listing) but this didn't help. • How can I persist certificates in Java's cacerts?

  We need to have a certificate in Java's cacerts keystore for one of our servers that is authenticated by LDAP. We are using Ubuntu server. We have successfully done this by updating the cacerts file in /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/lib/security but occasionally a Java update is installed and the cacerts file seems to be getting replaced by a default one that doesn't contain our changes. This doesn't happen very often but it is becoming a bit of a pain when it does happen. Is there a better way of adding things to cacerts so that they don't get lost when a Java update happens?   Does anyone have a solution for syncing large directories/filesystems using just a USB flash drive (and specifically without using a network connection)? The objective is simply to sync a user directory between two computers. The contents of the user directory could amount to a large quantity of data—say, a quantity larger than could be stored on any single USB drive—but the aggregate size of changes that must be propagated by a single sync could easily fit on a USB drive. As an example, suppose a user directory is already synchronized between a desktop and a laptop computer. Here's a use case: Some changes are made in the user directory on the desktop. We mount a USB drive onto the desktop and copy whatever changes need to be applied to the laptop user directory in order to synchronize the desktop and laptop user directories. We now mount the USB drive onto the laptop and apply the changes. The desktop and laptop user directories are now synchronized. Any ideas? Alan

• Windows XP SP3 dissapearing mapped drives

  I am running Windows XP Pro SP3 and I've got a few shares on my NAS that are mapped to reconnect automatically. I can access the drives soon after starting windows but after a period of inactivity I get the error "The local device name is already in use". This cannot be remedied until I restart the computer - I've tried disconnecting and re-mapping without success. This was working fine until I recently reinstalled Windows and I'm not sure what is going on. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Alan
